Background and Purpose Because robotic devices record the kinematics and kinetics of human movements with high resolution, we hypothesized that robotic measures collected longitudinally in patients after stroke would bear a significant relationship to standard clinical outcome measures and, therefore, might provide superior biomarkers. Methods In patients with moderate-to-severe acute ischemic stroke, we used clinical scales and robotic devices to measure arm movement 7, 14, 21, 30, and 90 days after the event at 2 clinical sites. The robots are interactive devices that measure speed, position, and force so that calculated kinematic and kinetic parameters could be compared with clinical …

BACKGROUND: Caregiver compliance with referrals for child health services is essential to child health outcomes. Many studies in sub-Saharan Africa have examined compliance patterns for children referred for acute, life-threatening conditions but few for children referred for non-acute conditions. The aims of this analysis were to determine the rate of referral compliance and investigate factors associated with referral compliance in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. METHODS: From September 2008-2010, a door-to-door household survey was conducted to identify children aged 4-6 years in outer-west eThekwini District, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Of 2,049 identified, informed consent was obtained for 1787 (89%) children who were …

Our previous dosimetry studies have demonstrated that for dopaminergic radiotracers, F-18-FDOPA and F-18-FPCIT, the urinary bladder is the critical organ. As these tracers accumulate in the basal ganglia (BG) with high affinity and long residence times, radiation dose to the BG may become significant, especially in normal control subjects. We have performed dynamic PET measurements using F-18-FPCIT in 16 normal adult subjects to determine if in fact the BG, although not a whole organ, but a well-defined substructure, receives the highest dose. Regions of interest were drawn over left and right BG structures. Resultant time-activity curves were generated and used …

Interaction And Protection Of Antimicrobial Compounds With Carbohydrate-Based Colloidal Systems For Improved Food Safety, Preetam Sarkar
Interaction And Protection Of Antimicrobial Compounds With Carbohydrate-Based Colloidal Systems For Improved Food Safety, Preetam Sarkar
Open Access Dissertations
The food processing industry has focused on using conventional methods for food preservation. However, the recurring incidence of food borne illnesses and outbreaks due to pathogenic or spoilage organisms have called for creation of novel intervention strategies. In recent years, antimicrobial compounds from natural sources are gaining significant importance in improving food safety and security. However, antimicrobials suffer from extensive degradation when applied to complex food systems due to several specific or non-specific interactions. There is an urgent need for the protection of such antimicrobials to prolong their activity in foods. One strategy of achieving the goal is by the …

Evaluating A Ninth Grade Transition Program : Link Crew, Luke Saechao
Evaluating A Ninth Grade Transition Program : Link Crew, Luke Saechao
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
For U.S. students, ninth grade is a critical year in the educational pipeline, often dictating a school-to-school transition period. The author evaluates the ramification on achievement following such a school-to-school transition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a ninth grade transition program called Link Crew, which was implemented by a large comprehensive urban high school. Do transition programs assist in maintaining achievement and readiness? Participants in the study were transitioning grade nine students from two high schools in central Virginia, in which only one received treatment via the Link Crew transition program. The quantitative study utilized school division …
Localized Concerns, Scientific Argumentation, Framing, And Federalism: The Case Of Devils Lake Water Diversion, Mike Gruszynski, Sarah Michaels
Localized Concerns, Scientific Argumentation, Framing, And Federalism: The Case Of Devils Lake Water Diversion, Mike Gruszynski, Sarah Michaels
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
A federal government system creates opportunities for proponents and opponents of environmental policy change to shift the institutional home where a policy decision is made and then invoke reasoning tailored for the new venue and to retry or reframe arguments. Content analysis of North Dakota state legislative and US Congressional committee hearings preceding authorization of an outlet connecting Devils Lake, North Dakota to the binational Hudson Bay drainage basin revealed: (1) State and federal legislators were equally likely to invoke constituents’ localized concerns in framing arguments, and (2) Scientific evidence did not hold sway in either state or federal hearings.

Uses of fossil fuels in transportation and power generation release greenhouse gases. Hydrogen has the potential to be an alternative clean energy carrier. Hydrogen fueled proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) can be used in transportation and stationary power generation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, high purity hydrogen is required for PEMFC. In the current work, dense Pd-Ag composite membranes with an oxide layer on microporous stainless steel substrate (MPSS) were fabricated by surfactant induced electroless plating (SIEP) process for hydrogen separation. Prior to palladium/silver metal deposition, the MPSS disc was oxidized in stagnant air at 500 ºC for …
Hvac Supply Air Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Tony Van Nguyen
Hvac Supply Air Optimization Using Evolutionary Algorithms, Tony Van Nguyen
Theses
Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning account for a vast majority of energy consumption in the residential and commercial sectors. Intelligent energy management control system (EMCS) in buildings offers an excellent means of reducing energy consumption in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems while maintaining or improving indoor environmental conditions. This can be achieved through the use of computational intelligence and optimization. This project proposes and evaluates a model-based optimization process for HVAC systems using an evolutionary algorithm. The process can be integrated into the EMCS to perform several intelligent functions and achieve optimal whole-system performance. The proposed process addresses the requirements …

Understanding Cell Viability And Mechanics Of Actin Filament Response Of Nih/3t3 Fibroblasts Under Biaxial Stretch, Hamed Ghazizadeh
Theses
Cells are constantly subjected to mechanical stress during various physical activities. Understanding the role of the resultant mechanical stresses on cellular mechanotransduction is critical for considerate various cellular activities in the body such as control of cell growth, migration, differentiation, apoptosis and wound repair. The long-term goal is to understand whether it is possible to control cell functions through mechanical forces. Specifically, in this work, we report on the cellular and mechanistic response of NIH/3T3 fibroblastic cells (cultured on silicone membrane), when subjected to cyclic biaxial stretch generated in a custom-built stretching system, as described in Karumbaiah et al (Karumbaiah …
Effects Of Charge And Substituent On The S∙∙∙N Chalcogen Bond, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner
Effects Of Charge And Substituent On The S∙∙∙N Chalcogen Bond, U. Adhikari, Steve Scheiner
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Neutral complexes containing a S···N chalcogen bond are compared with similar systems in which a positive charge has been added to the S-containing electron acceptor, using high-level ab initio calculations. The effects on both XS···N and XS+···N bonds are evaluated for a range of different substituents X = CH3, CF3, NH2, NO2, OH, Cl, and F, using NH3 as the common electron donor. The binding energy of XMeS···NH3 varies between 2.3 and 4.3 kcal/mol, with the strongest interaction occurring for X = F. The binding is strengthened by a factor of 2–10 in charged XH2S+···NH3 complexes, reaching a maximum of …

To better study the effects of Cystic Fibrosis on the human body, it is important to be able to effectively and efficiently recreate the disease in an appropriate mammalian model. New technology in transfection reagent, jetPRIME, hopes to allow us to efficiently transfer these Cystic Fibrosis sequences into sheep embryos to allow the traits to be expressed on a more reliable basis on the cloned sheep.
My research with this reagent was to test the reliability of jetPRIME to transfer our desired DNA sequences into cells at a more efficient rate then previously demonstrated by other reagents. Because of the …

Background: Same-sex pairing is common in many animal species. In many insects, same-sex pairing is often thought to be a result of poor sexual discrimination (i.e., a mistake), but few detailed studies of the mechanisms underlying the mistaken pairing have been conducted. Previous studies have found that in the field, a small proportion of Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica) mating pairs consist of two males instead of a male and a female. In the current study, we investigated the relationship between body size, the tendency to mount other males, and the duration of these mounts, in laboratory experiments on male Japanese …

A Flexible Broadband Antenna And Transmission Line Network For A Wearable Microwave Breast Cancer Detection System, Emily Porter, Gregory Walls, Yahe Zhou, Milica Popović, Joshua D. Schwartz
Engineering Faculty Research
First, we report on the design, simulation and measurement of a 2-4 GHz conformable antenna optimized for skin contact and implemented on a flexible printed circuit for integration into a wearable device. Second, we experimentally verify the suitability of appropriately long (~10 cm) microstrip traces for the wearable system signal distribution network, which features varying radii of curvature. Consequently, the contribution of the here reported work is two-fold. First, the experimental results obtained both with breast phantoms and on-body measurements, demonstrate a return loss below -10 dB in the desired frequency band. Phantom results also show a through-breast transmission coefficient …
Self-Repair Of Cooperation Network Under Nodes Failure, Yaofeng Zhang, Renbin Xiao
Self-Repair Of Cooperation Network Under Nodes Failure, Yaofeng Zhang, Renbin Xiao
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
To further study the influences of nodes failure on the total fitness degree and the cooperative ratio in cooperation network, we established the cooperation network model firstly, and then, the update rules of individual strategy and the rules of networks selfrepair are constructed. The process of self-repair in cooperation network under nodes failure is analyzed by the agent-based simulation experiments. The results show that the nodes failure not only reduces the total fitness degree, but also reduces the cooperative ratio in the cooperation network. However, by introducing the self-repair rules, the emergence of a few new cooperative nodes can soon …
