Formulating Effective And Accessible Population-Based Colorectal Cancer Screening Programs, Danielle Luffman
Formulating Effective And Accessible Population-Based Colorectal Cancer Screening Programs, Danielle Luffman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Colorectal cancer, a type of carcinoma originating in cells of the colon or rectum, continues to rank as the third most prevalent cancer worldwide with 1.36 million cases and the fourth most fatal with 693,881 deaths during 2012. In an attempt to alleviate the burden of colorectal cancer throughout society, governments and non-governmental organizations continue to implement population-based cancer screening programs. These programs, typically designed by a federal authority, offer free screening tests to a given population for a certain type of cancer on a routine basis. National systematic screening programs have effectively reduced the incidence of and mortality from …

The Potential Of Exogenous Fatty Acids In Breast Tissue Engineering, Richard Thomas Pace
All Dissertations
More than 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the United States, where the majority will undergo a lumpectomy procedure and then radiotherapy as preventative treatment. Both artificial and tissue transplants may obscure the detection of cancer recurrence or limit the effectiveness of radiation treatment. Previous research in our laboratory has been performed to develop injectable lumpectomy void fillers. This body of work seeks to continue and further develop the technology of the void fillers and further investigate the potential of fatty acids in breast tissue engineering.
Literature suggests that lipid peroxidation products from free fatty acids …
Hyperthermia, Radiation And Chemotherapy: The Role Of Heat In Multidisciplinary Cancer Care., Mark Hurwitz, Md, Paul R. Stauffer
Hyperthermia, Radiation And Chemotherapy: The Role Of Heat In Multidisciplinary Cancer Care., Mark Hurwitz, Md, Paul R. Stauffer
Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
The compelling biologic basis for combining hyperthermia with modern cancer therapies including radiation and chemotherapy was first appreciated nearly half a century ago. Hyperthermia complements radiation as conditions contributing to radio-resistance generally enhance sensitivity to heat and sensitizing effects occur through increased perfusion/tumor oxygenation and alteration of cellular death pathways. Chemosensitization with hyperthermia is dependent on the particular mechanism of effect for each agent with synergistic effects noted for several commonly used agents. Clinically, randomized trials have demonstrated benefit including survival with the addition of hyperthermia to radiation or chemotherapy in treatment of a wide range of malignancies. Improvements in …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In cotton production, nitrogen (N) is the most limiting nutrient and the demand is substantial. Foliar-N fertilization is regarded as an effective and environmentally sound method of supplying cotton with N during times of deficiency and high demand. In response to the potential benefits of the foliar-N fertilization of cotton, a myriad of foliar-N based fertilizers have been created; each with their own individual chemical technology and constitution. Experiments were performed with the objectives of examining the effects of the slow-release foliar-N fertilizer, Nitamin® (1) on the growth and development of field-grown cotton, (2) on uptake under various environmental conditions, …
Development And Characterization Of An Autologous Whole Cell Breast Cancer Vaccine, Samantha Leigh Kurtz
Development And Characterization Of An Autologous Whole Cell Breast Cancer Vaccine, Samantha Leigh Kurtz
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Approximately 40,000 women will die from breast cancer in the United States in 2014. About 90% of these deaths will be due to metastases, rather than the primary tumor and majority of metastases are due to the recurrence and progression of non-metastatic disease. Current adjuvant treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, have severe side effects and may result in overtreatment and drug resistance.
Since greater than 90% of patients are diagnosed between stages I-III and have minimal residual disease after treatment, there is an opportunity to treat patients with an autologous breast cancer vaccine. Autologous vaccines under development have a …

Working With Medical And Psychological Illness: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Nurses' Experiences In Treating Eating Disorders, Diana Levas-Luckman
Dissertations
Eating disorders (EDs) have become an epidemic within the United States, with medical and psychological consequences that can be lethal. Treatment for these diseases is complex and demanding, requiring an integrated treatment approach by a multidisciplinary team in which nurses play an integral role. Research has demonstrated a wide array of both positive and negative experiences among nurses in traditional medical and mental health settings. Though researchers have assessed nurses' subjective experiences in treating EDs, the literature neglects to focus upon the broader experiences of nurses, including perceived benefits and challenges, in treating both adult and adolescent ED patients. The …

Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer affecting women worldwide. The mortality associated with cervical cancer can, however, be significantly reduced if the disease is detected at the pre-malignant stage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of Raman microspectroscopy for elucidation of the biochemical changes associated with the pre-malignant stages of cervical cancer. Formalin fixed paraffin preserved tissue sections from cervical biopsies classified as negative for intraepithelial lesion and malignancy (NILM), low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) or high grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) were analysed by Raman spectral mapping. Raman mapping, with K-Means Cluster …
Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Uvas Creek, California, Downstream Of A Reservoir, Carole Ann Foster
Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Uvas Creek, California, Downstream Of A Reservoir, Carole Ann Foster
Master's Theses
I sampled macroinvertebrates in May, July, and October 2008 in Uvas Creek, a reservoir-regulated stream in south Santa Clara County, California, to assess what factors (including canopy closure, turbidity, and stream flow) downstream of the reservoir were related to food availability for rearing juvenile Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss). I found benthic and drifting macroinvertebrate biomass was considerably greater during most months in the more open-canopied two sites in the downstream reach as compared to the densely shaded, more turbid and silty two sites in the upstream reach. Abundance of important drifting aquatic invertebrates in May (chironomids, simuliids, and baetids) was proportional …
The Role Of Lithology In Glacial Valley Cross-Sectional Shape In Sierra Nevada, California, Kaai Jensen
The Role Of Lithology In Glacial Valley Cross-Sectional Shape In Sierra Nevada, California, Kaai Jensen
Master's Theses
It is commonly inferred that alpine glaciers transform fluvial valleys from V to U-shaped. It has been suggested that, under certain circumstances, glaciers are unable to modify V-shaped valleys and that lithology may play an important role in a glacier's ability to effectively erode bedrock. To test this hypothesis, six glaciated valleys with both U and V-shaped cross sections were chosen in the Sierra Nevada (CA) to examine how lithological properties might affect patterns of glacial erosion: Tenaya Canyon, Tuolumne River, Little Yosemite Valley, the San Joaquin River, the north fork of the King River, and Deadman Canyon. Valley profiles …
Sex-Specific Distributions Of Leopard Sharks (Triakis Semifasciata) In An Estuarine Environment, Andrea Lynn Launer
Sex-Specific Distributions Of Leopard Sharks (Triakis Semifasciata) In An Estuarine Environment, Andrea Lynn Launer
Master's Theses
Estuaries are used seasonally by many elasmobranchs for reproduction and as nurseries. The character, location, and availability of elasmobranch habitats in estuaries are often altered by anthropogenic activities and environmental changes. These habitat changes may have different effects on groups within a shark population because sex-specific segregations are common for many elasmobranchs. Leopard Sharks (Triakis semifasciata) are important estuarine predators in California and exhibit sexual segregations. Movements of 13 Leopard Sharks (male n=6, female n=7) tagged with coded acoustic transmitters were monitored from March 14, 2013 to March 9, 2014 using moored receivers in Elkhorn Slough, CA. Movement patterns were …
The Abc's Of Being A Fan: An Operant Analysis Of Sports Consumption Behavior, Sean Pradhan
The Abc's Of Being A Fan: An Operant Analysis Of Sports Consumption Behavior, Sean Pradhan
Master's Theses
In the last 30 years, behavioral psychologists have begun to systematically apply the principles of operant theory to the analysis of consumer behavior. Two behavioral approaches that have been successfully employed in consumer behavior analysis are the Behavioral Perspective Model (BPM; Foxall, 1990) and the Behavioral Ecology of Consumption (BEC; Rajala & Hantula, 2000). However, neither of these models has been used to analyze sports consumption behavior. One purpose of the present study was to integrate consumer behavior models with other theoretical approaches to the investigation of sports consumption behavior. A second purpose was to examine the effects of three …
Effects Of Depth, Site, And Season On Phenotypic Variation Of The Geniculate Coralline, Calliarthron Tuberculosum Around The Monterey Peninsula, California, Jasmine Elena Ruvalcaba
Effects Of Depth, Site, And Season On Phenotypic Variation Of The Geniculate Coralline, Calliarthron Tuberculosum Around The Monterey Peninsula, California, Jasmine Elena Ruvalcaba
Master's Theses
Coralline algae are ubiquitous in near-shore marine environments. In particular, geniculate corallines occur in intertidal and subtidal habitats with abundances typically higher at shallow depths. Due to the high abundance of Calliarthron tuberculosum in Monterey kelp beds, this species was chosen to study effects of depth, site, and season on morphology and physiology. To further understand this pattern, populations from 3 and 10 m depth were sampled at two sites to examine morphometric variables including total length, total width, and number of branch tips as well as, physiological variables including respiration, photosynthetic, and calcification rates. Growth rates were also quantified …

Lignin utilization during biomass conversion has been a major challenge for lignocellulosic biofuel. In particular, the conversion of lignin along with carbohydrate for fungible fuels and chemicals will both improve the overall carbon efficiency and reduce the need for chemical pretreatments. However, few biomass-converting microorganisms have the capacity to degrade all cell wall components including lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. We hereby evaluated a unique oleaginous fungus strain, Cunninghamella echinulata FR3, for its capacity to degrade lignin during biomass conversion to lipid, and the potential to carry out consolidated fermentation without chemical pretreatment, especially when combined with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) bmr …
The Effects Of Limestone Particle Size On Bone Health And Performance Of Pullets And Hens In Conventional Cage And Alternative Housing Systems, Pamela E. Eusebio Balcazar
The Effects Of Limestone Particle Size On Bone Health And Performance Of Pullets And Hens In Conventional Cage And Alternative Housing Systems, Pamela E. Eusebio Balcazar
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One of the major welfare issues in cage-free housing systems is bone fracture. The goal of this research was to improve bone health in layers by building better pullet skeletons and to investigate limestone particle size (LPS) effects on bone health in conventional cages and cage-free housing systems. Study 1 was a preliminary study that compared conventional cages with litter floor pens in terms of performance, bone health, and eggshell quality from 33 to 47 wk of age. Caged hens had higher egg production and eggshell strength, and improved feed efficiency, but lower tibia bone mineral content compared to floor …
Turning The Board Blue: America's Epiduralized System Of Birth. A Medical Ethnography, Maureen May
Turning The Board Blue: America's Epiduralized System Of Birth. A Medical Ethnography, Maureen May
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation is a medical ethnography of a nurse-midwifery hospital-based maternity service in an urban American hospital. The research study incorporates on-site observation, interviews, and data collection. The recent transformation of American hospital childbirth is described. Epiduralized birth has become the norm, representing a standardization of the cascade of interventions so often referred to by critics of the system of hospital birth in the United States. The routine use of the epidural has led to a Gleichschaltung of birth where the centrality of the epidural makes necessary a unitary, complex, totalistic set of interventions all of which make up an …
Evaluation Of Non-Covalent Interaction Models In Molecular Crystals Using Terahertz Spectroscopy, Thomas Juliano
Evaluation Of Non-Covalent Interaction Models In Molecular Crystals Using Terahertz Spectroscopy, Thomas Juliano
Dissertations - ALL
Density functional theory (DFT) is a powerful tool that can be used to evaluate the low-frequency vibrational spectra of solid-state crystalline materials. Since THz spectroscopy is sensitive to both the intermolecular and intramolecular forces that govern the formation of crystalline materials, it is an ideal tool to investigate the accuracy of calculated DFT crystal structures and their vibrational spectra. When using solid-state DFT, non-covalent dispersion interactions are not fully treated in typical approaches. In order to account for these interactions, the addition of dispersion force correction terms are necessary. A number of methods exist to correct for this deficiency of …
Coordination Polymers Of The Alkaline Earth Metals For Applications In Synthesis And Gas Storage, Peter Josue Rosado Flores
Coordination Polymers Of The Alkaline Earth Metals For Applications In Synthesis And Gas Storage, Peter Josue Rosado Flores
Dissertations - ALL
The work presented in this thesis outlines our efforts to synthesize alkaline earth metal
coordination complexes that could potentially serve as gas storage and synthetic precursor
materials. The properties of these complexes are heavily influenced by factors such as the
propensity to aggregate and the absence of energetically available d-orbitals which provide
directionality. These often pose a challenge in obtaining suitable, stable compounds.
Some challenges in the crystallization of alkaline earth coordination complexes involve
the precipitation of insoluble aggregates. Thus, a great part of the work focused on studying
suitable reaction conditions towards the formation of X-ray quality crystals for …

Treatment Updates Regarding Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma And Anaplastic Oligoastrocytoma, Khurshid Ahmed Khan, Ahmed Nadeem Abbasi, Nasir Ali
Department of Radiation Oncology
Anaplastic Oligodendroglioma / Anaplastic Oligoastrocytoma (AO/AOA) is a WHO Grade-III primary brain tumor. These tumors comprise about 5 - 10% of all gliomas, which make them the third most common primary brain tumors after glioblastoma multiforme and astrocytomas. For many years standard of treatment remained Maximum Safe Resection (MSR) followed by Radiotherapy (RT). These tumors have also been known to be sensitive to alkylator-based chemotherapy particularly the subset having 1p/19q co-deletion signature. There is robust data showing that these tumors are responsive to chemotherapy in recurrent or progressive setting. Recently, up front chemotherapy has been added to standard post-surgery RT. …
Genetic Health And Population Viability Of Reintroduced American Marten In Michigan, Tamara L. Hillman
Genetic Health And Population Viability Of Reintroduced American Marten In Michigan, Tamara L. Hillman
Masters Theses
American marten (Martes americana) were extirpated from Michigan’s Lower Peninsula (LP) in 1911, and subsequently from the Upper Peninsula (UP) in 1939 due to habitat loss and unregulated trapping. The species was later reintroduced in the UP in the mid-1950s, and to the LP in the mid-1980s. Previous research has determined the small founding sizes used in the LP reintroductions have resulted in losses of genetic diversity, while research in the UP has produced discordant results concerning the effects of the reintroduction methods on genetic health and population structure. Since past research of marten in the LP, no …
Predictive Modeling Of Floral Species Richness In Michigan Prairie Fen Communities, Nichole R. Mason
Predictive Modeling Of Floral Species Richness In Michigan Prairie Fen Communities, Nichole R. Mason
Masters Theses
Prairie fens contain high levels of floral biodiversity, including 19 state threatened or endangered plant species, and are classified as rare and vulnerable communities by the Michigan Natural Features Inventory. The objective of this thesis was to develop multiple-regression (MR) models that reliably predict total, native, and invasive floral species richness for use by conservation organizations. Floral biodiversity surveys were conducted in eight southern Michigan prairie fens during the 2012 growing season. Simple linear regressions between fen size and biodiversity were used to optimize sampling strategy and effort (i.e., number of transects and plots per transect) in surveys conducted in …
Assessing Irrigation Water Quality For Ph, Salts, & Alkalinity, Dara M. Park, Sarah A. White, Nick Menchyk
Assessing Irrigation Water Quality For Ph, Salts, & Alkalinity, Dara M. Park, Sarah A. White, Nick Menchyk
Journal of Extension
Proper irrigation management is increasingly critical as demand and competition for high quality, potable water grows. Coupled with identifying all potential stressors, accurate interpretation of water quality reports is essential to irrigation managers because management practices affect both soil and plant health. The complex nature of information given in water quality reports makes interpretation and selection and implementation of appropriate management options difficult for many stakeholders. Therefore, an easy-to-follow flow chart was developed for use by Extension agents to aid in consultations with stakeholders' about their water quality reports.
Application Of The Transtheoretical Model: Assessing Exercise Behavior In African Americans In A Church-Based Setting, Robin Marie White
Application Of The Transtheoretical Model: Assessing Exercise Behavior In African Americans In A Church-Based Setting, Robin Marie White
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Sedentary behavior rates are higher among African-American men and women than in other American races and ethnicities, placing them at greater risk for chronic illness. Routine physical activity reduces the risk of chronic health problems such as: (a) overweight and obesity, (b) type 2 diabetes, (c) hypertension, (d) coronary artery disease, (e) stroke, (f) congestive heart failure, and (g) cancers. Assessment of African-Americans' exercise attitudes in a church-based setting may provide information with which to develop effective interventions to improve physical activity. This descriptive, cross-sectional study used components of the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) to assess whether any associations exist between …
Possible Benefits Of Playing Music Video Games, Amanda Pasinski
Possible Benefits Of Playing Music Video Games, Amanda Pasinski
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Music video games, such as Rock Band, are an emerging and popular genre of video game that allows non-musicians a taste of what it is like to be a musician. For most people, developing musicianship (or the process of becoming competent with a particular musical instrument) to an expert level is a long and difficult process that can take up to 10 years or over 7,500 hours to complete. Yet musicians tend to outperform non-musicians on a variety of tasks--showing greater motor coordination, better synchronization skills, and better pitch and tempo discrimination--and possibly show differences in related cognitive processes. However, …
