Making Do In Making Drugs: Innovation Policy And Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, W. Nicholson Price Ii Jan 2014

Making Do In Making Drugs: Innovation Policy And Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, W. Nicholson Price Ii

Law Faculty Scholarship

Despite increasing recalls, contamination events, and shortages, drug companies continue to rely on outdated manufacturing plants and processes. Drug manufacturing’s inefficiency and lack of innovation stand in stark contrast to drug discovery, which is the focus of a calibrated innovation policy that combines patents and FDA regulation. Pharmaceutical manufacturing lags far behind the innovative techniques found in other industries due to high regulatory barriers and ineffective intellectual property incentives. Among other challenges, although manufacturers tend to rely on trade secrecy because of the difficulty in enforcing patents on manufacturing processes, trade secrecy provides limited incentives for innovation. To increase those …

Overcoming India’S Food Security Challenges: The Role Of Intellectual Property Management And Technology Transfer Capacity Building, Stanley Kowalski, Aarushi Gupta, Ifica Mehra Jan 2014

Overcoming India’S Food Security Challenges: The Role Of Intellectual Property Management And Technology Transfer Capacity Building, Stanley Kowalski, Aarushi Gupta, Ifica Mehra

Law Faculty Scholarship

The growth of the Indian economy after Independence has had little impact on the food security of the country. The paper analyses the development of advanced crop varieties through the use of agricultural technologies (hereinafter "agbiotech") within the technology transfer system, a framework which comprises of the interactions of intellectual property rights law and agricultural research and development in India. Through this, the author argues that agricultural innovation in India is failing due to the absence of connections within the technology transfer system and advocates for the creation of a national program aimed at advancing IP and tech-transfer capacity in …

Horses As Sources Of Proprietary Information: Commercialization, Conservation, And Compensation Pursuant To The Convention On Biological Diversity, Haley Mcclory, Stanley Kowalski Jan 2014

Horses As Sources Of Proprietary Information: Commercialization, Conservation, And Compensation Pursuant To The Convention On Biological Diversity, Haley Mcclory, Stanley Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

Horses indigenous to East and Southeast (E/SE) Asia, including native, landrace, feral, and wild populations, embody valuable genetic diversity. Conservation efforts for animals have largely been driven by humane altruism, with little consideration for the information value of genomes. Yet, if horses are viewed as archives of information as well as objects of affection, their conservation shifts to a market-based paradigm. Horse genetic resources (GR) likely contain significant value to the lucrative global horse industry, including veterinary applications such as diagnostics, therapeutics, genetic markers, gene therapies, and cloning technologies. As biotechnology becomes increasingly sophisticated, mining of horse GR will accelerate, …

The Electrochemical Detection Of Explosive Compounds Using Polymer And Chemically Modified Electrodes, Hollis Rachial D Jan 2014

The Electrochemical Detection Of Explosive Compounds Using Polymer And Chemically Modified Electrodes, Hollis Rachial D

Theses

The detection and quantification of explosive compounds is extremely important in global security, antiterrorist, and forensic activity. While there are sensitive and reliable methods for detection, the development of electrochemical techniques is used here because they are simple, affordable, and can be made for field use. In this investigation, chlorogenic acid (CGA) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was used to detect hydrazine in concentrations as low as 0.05mM; aspartic acid modified GCE was used to detect both nitrobenzene and 4-nitrotoluene in concentrations as low as 3.3μM and 1.3μM, respectively; and finally phenol red coated GCE was used to detect nitrobenzene …

Enhancing Asphalt Binder's Rheological Behavior And Aging Susceptibility Using Nano-Particles, Renaldo C. Walters Jan 2014

Enhancing Asphalt Binder's Rheological Behavior And Aging Susceptibility Using Nano-Particles, Renaldo C. Walters

Theses

The life expectancy of Asphalt Binder (AB) has been negatively impacted by the harsh bombardment of UV rays. UV rays cause asphalt to oxidize faster which results in deterioration of asphalt rheological characteristics that can lead to pavement distresses. This study investigates the impact that nano-particles and bio modification have on the aging susceptibility of asphalt binder. As such, the following hypothesis was investigated: Introduction of nano particles to asphalt binder will reduce asphalt oxidation aging by increasing the inter layer spacing of the nano particles. Two nano scale materials were used for this study, nano-clay and bio-char as well …

Wear Behavior Characterization For The Screening Of Magnesium-Based Alloys, Paul R. Mcghee Jan 2014

Wear Behavior Characterization For The Screening Of Magnesium-Based Alloys, Paul R. Mcghee

Theses

This research is focused on the development of a systematic approach to evaluate the selection of materials for Mg-based alloys under wear conditions for biomedical applications. A pilot study was carried out in order to establish an accurate and reliable wear testing technique for magnesium and its alloys. This pilot study was conducted on aluminum (Al) and pure Mg, and showed that aluminum has a lower wear rate compared to Mg. The technique displayed good repeatability and high precision. For the main study, an ERC Mg-based alloy was to be compared with pure Mg. The same technique, when applied to …

Soft Micro-Channels For Cell Culturing And Migration Studies, Sara Abbasirazgaleh Jan 2014

Soft Micro-Channels For Cell Culturing And Migration Studies, Sara Abbasirazgaleh

Theses

Various techniques and methods have been studied and developed to aid nerve regeneration and repairing nerve injuries. Among all, nerve grafting is the gold standard for bridging the gap between the injured nerve stumps. Despite the advantages of this technique, there are also various drawbacks that have encouraged the exploration of alternative, less invasive methods for promoting nerve regeneration. In this thesis, we have fabricated soft micro-channels for cell culturing and migration studies which could act as an interface capable of long-term, reliable, and high-resolution stimulation device for nerve regeneration. Micro-channels fabrication is performed using a ombination of photolithography technique …

Freezing Curve Measurements For Hydrocarbon Mixtures, Derrick Amoabeng Jan 2014

Freezing Curve Measurements For Hydrocarbon Mixtures, Derrick Amoabeng

Theses

Solid-liquid equilibrium measurements were carried out for a binary system of (decane + dodecane) at several different mole fractions under atmospheric pressure. The work involved the design of new experimental setup for the solid-liquid equilibrium data measurements. The newly designed setup was used to study the freezing curve and solid-liquid transition temperature for pure decane and dodecane as test runs. The main work was to investigate and confirm the binary mixtures which form solid solutions (solid state structure) or eutectic structures (each particular component forms crystals out of the solution separately), and further develop a binary solid-liquid phase diagram for …

Disciplinary Evolution And The Rise Of The Transdiscipline, Eli B. Cohen, Scott J. Lloyd Jan 2014

Disciplinary Evolution And The Rise Of The Transdiscipline, Eli B. Cohen, Scott J. Lloyd

College of Business Faculty Publications

This paper challenges readers to reflect on academic disciplines in a new way, through the lens of the theory of evolution. Indeed, how disciplines came into being has been largely left unexplored. This paper shows how the concepts of evolution can be productively applied to describe the development, creation, and diminishment of disciplines. These concepts include natural selection, speciation, parallel evolution, extinction, and heterosis, among others. The paper concludes that these forces lead to a prediction that a new form of organization, the transdiscipline, is evolving to become perhaps predominant.

Cyclodextrin-Promoted Energy Transfer For Broadly Applicable Small-Molecule Detection, Nicole Serio, Chitapom Chanthalyma, Lindsey Prignano, Mindy Levine Jan 2014

Cyclodextrin-Promoted Energy Transfer For Broadly Applicable Small-Molecule Detection, Nicole Serio, Chitapom Chanthalyma, Lindsey Prignano, Mindy Levine

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Reported herein is the development of non-covalent, proximity-induced energy transfer from small-molecule toxicants to organic fluorophores bound in the cavity of γ-cyclodextrin. This energy transfer occurs with exceptional efficiency for a broad range of toxicants in complex biological media, and is largely independent of the spectral overlap between the donor and acceptor. This generally applicable phenomenon has significant potential in the development of new turn-on detection schemes.

Parametric And Nonparametric Statistical Methods For Genomic Selection Of Traits With Additive And Epistatic Genetic Architectures, Reka Howard, Alicia L. Carriquiry, William D. Beavis Jan 2014

Parametric And Nonparametric Statistical Methods For Genomic Selection Of Traits With Additive And Epistatic Genetic Architectures, Reka Howard, Alicia L. Carriquiry, William D. Beavis

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Parametric and nonparametric methods have been developed for purposes of predicting phenotypes. These methods are based on retrospective analyses of empirical data consisting of genotypic and phenotypic scores. Recent reports have indicated that parametric methods are unable to predict phenotypes of traits with known epistatic genetic architectures. Herein, we review parametric methods including least squares regression, ridge regression, Bayesian ridge regression, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), Bayesian LASSO, best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), Bayes A, Bayes B, Bayes C, and Bayes Cπ. We also review nonparametric methods including Nadaraya-Watson estimator, reproducing kernel Hilbert space, support vector machine regression, …

The Influence Of Basin Morphometry On The Regional Coherence Of Patterns Of Diatom-Inferred Salinity In Lakes Of The Northern Great Plains (Usa), Courtney R. Wigdahl, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Jeffery R. Stone, Daniel R. Engstrom Jan 2014

The Influence Of Basin Morphometry On The Regional Coherence Of Patterns Of Diatom-Inferred Salinity In Lakes Of The Northern Great Plains (Usa), Courtney R. Wigdahl, Jasmine E. Saros, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Jeffery R. Stone, Daniel R. Engstrom

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Sedimentary diatom profiles from saline lakes are frequently used to reconstruct lakewater salinity as an indicator of drought. However, diatom-inferred salinity (DI-salinity) reconstructions from geographically proximal sites in the Great Plains (USA) have yielded disparate results. This study explores how physical changes in lake habitat resulting from drought may affect climate inferences from salinity reconstructions. Differences in relationships among drought, lake-level change, and diatom community structure over the last century were examined for three saline lakes in the northern Great Plains with dissimilar DI-salinity records. At each site, models were developed relating available planktic:benthic (P:B) habitat area to lake-level change, …

An Experimental Study On The Heat Enhancement And The Bio-Heat Transfer Using Gold Macro Road And Ultrasound: A Potential Alternative To Kill Cancer Cells, C. Austerlitz, Ioannis Gkigkitzis, Ioannis Haranas, Diana Campos Jan 2014

An Experimental Study On The Heat Enhancement And The Bio-Heat Transfer Using Gold Macro Road And Ultrasound: A Potential Alternative To Kill Cancer Cells, C. Austerlitz, Ioannis Gkigkitzis, Ioannis Haranas, Diana Campos

Physics and Computer Science Faculty Publications

We have previously proposed a method of treating solid tumors with a combination of gold macro-rods irradiated with ultrasound. Macro particle sized rods offer a greater circumferential treatment area over nanoparticle options. Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the heat enhancement and the bio-heat transfer to breast chicken using gold macro rod and ultrasound. An ultrasound, other than a focused ultrasound, may produce heat enough to cook a chicken breast up to about 1 cm diameter if a single gold rod is placed on the superficial tissue. Simulations and experimental results will provide the means to evaluate the treatment, to …

Stochastic Approach In Groundwater Modeling: A Case Study Of The Buffalo Creek Watershed, Jenberu Lemu Feyyisa Jan 2014

Stochastic Approach In Groundwater Modeling: A Case Study Of The Buffalo Creek Watershed, Jenberu Lemu Feyyisa

Theses

Simulation and prediction of groundwater flow and solute (contaminant) transport highly depends upon aquifer parameters and their spatial distribution. Since this variability in space is in fact random, solutions for groundwater flow and contaminants transport are better defined through a statistical approach. This study acknowledges and considers spatial variability of horizontal hydraulic conductivity values and compares calibrated steady-state condition groundwater flow both in deterministic and stochastic approach using MODFLOW model. Based upon the discretized model, for each model run 10, 495 different horizontal hydraulic conductivity values (set) were generated using Kriging statistical distribution method and results of groundwater depth was …

The Impact Of Diet On Goat Rumen Microbes And Innate Immune Gene Expression, Ahmed Abdalla Jan 2014

The Impact Of Diet On Goat Rumen Microbes And Innate Immune Gene Expression, Ahmed Abdalla

Theses

Gastrointestinal nematodes in goats have developed resistance to chemical anthelmintics, resulting in the need for alternative control strategies. One approach is incorporation of Sericea Lespedeza (SL) as high quality forage that suppresses these parasites in goats due to its high condensed tannin (CT) content. However, little is known about its effect on rumen microorganisms and innate immunity in goats. A diverse collection of microorganisms is found in the goat rumen and Bifidobacteria is one of the important organisms in the immunity, yet its presence in the goat rumen is not fully studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate …

Toxicity Of Potassium Permanganate And Potassium Peroxymonosulfate Controlled Released Biodegradable Polymer To The Non-Target Organism Daphnia Magna, Niya Sade’ King Jan 2014

Toxicity Of Potassium Permanganate And Potassium Peroxymonosulfate Controlled Released Biodegradable Polymer To The Non-Target Organism Daphnia Magna, Niya Sade’ King

Theses

Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and potassium peroxymonosulfate (Oxone®) are chemical oxidants widely used in natural surface waters and wastewaters for the control and removal of pathogens and the prevention of disease caused by bacteria. However, KMnO4 and Oxone® have the ability to be toxic to aquatic life. Moreover, there is limited information within literature about the toxicity of these oxidizing agents to non-target organisms such as the microcrustacean Daphnia magna (D. magna). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of KMnO4 and Oxone® to D. magna. The focus for this work is to determine the toxic effects …

Weaving Linguistics Into A Range Of Fabrics, Sharon Klein Jan 2014

Weaving Linguistics Into A Range Of Fabrics, Sharon Klein

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium

No linguist is ever at a loss to understand how attention to any aspect of language as an object of inquiry can contribute to the context where the piece might be found. But linguists rarely get consulted, because what is also true is that virtually no one beyond the landscape of linguistic study is likely even to know that such a perspective on language exists, much less that it might truly be useful. Waiting for this state of affairs to change is fruitless—surely frustrating—and many of us choose to ignore the views “out there” keeping our individual and collective focus …

Chemical Characterization Of Aviation Fuels By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Thomas Francois Gardler Jan 2014

Chemical Characterization Of Aviation Fuels By Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Thomas Francois Gardler

Theses

This research proposes that analysis of greater depth can be performed on fuels to help understand their composition better than what is currently performed. At present, there is a disconnect between the groups that use fuels and the groups that make fuels- neither side knows precisely what the other wants. By having a better understanding of a fuel's chemical makeup, correlations between different components and different properties may be found. Using this knowledge, fuels could be made exactly how an end-user would need them. This could reduce waste of undesirable fuel as well as drive us away from fossil fuel …

Determining The Presence, Genetic Variability, And Function Of Cytolethal Distending Toxin In Samoa Strains Of Haemophilus Ducreyi, Andrea Faye Anstead Jan 2014

Determining The Presence, Genetic Variability, And Function Of Cytolethal Distending Toxin In Samoa Strains Of Haemophilus Ducreyi, Andrea Faye Anstead

Theses

Haemophilus ducreyi is the causative agent of the genital ulcerative disease chancroid. Chancroid is an important facilitator for increased transmission of HIV amongst heterosexuals. Chancroid is endemic to Asia, Africa, and Latin America, but there have been several outbreaks within the United States. Chancroidal ulcers are categorized as soft, painful, bloody ulcers that may remain chronic if untreated. H. ducreyi produces and secretes a cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) that causes various cell types to undergo cell cycle arrest or apoptosis. The CDT holotoxin consists of three genes: cdtA, cdtB, and cdtC. In 2006, the first report of nonsexual transmission of …
