Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A posttest-only, quasi-experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of two problem-based learning environments on students’ self-regulation of learning and students’ level of cognitive load. The study involved 40 graduate nursing students from two intact nursing courses where problem-based learning was the principal method of instruction. Twenty students from an online course and 20 students from a face-to-face course received one ill-structured problem per week in their respective courses over the 4-week duration of this study. All participants completed the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire after their 4-week participation in the study to describe their learning motivation and their …

Dependence Of The Abdominal Wall-Mesh Interfacial Strength On The Fixation Method For Ventral Hernia Repair, Hummad Mohammad Tasneem Jan 2014

Dependence Of The Abdominal Wall-Mesh Interfacial Strength On The Fixation Method For Ventral Hernia Repair, Hummad Mohammad Tasneem

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hernia occurrence is on the rise. The most common approach to repair today is a hernioplasty repair using a surgical mesh for permanent reinforcement after repairing the hernia defect. Different fixation techniques using materials such as tacks, staples, sutures, or adhesives are utilized to provide initial fixation until tissue ingrowth occurs. Currently, regarding ventral hernia mesh repair operations there is inadequate amount of information available regarding the efficiency of a mesh repair using adhesives. Consequently, this study compares the interface strength between mesh and tissue when mesh is fixed with either of the two following techniques: a) adhesives or b) …

Influence Of Constant And Periodic Experimental Hypoxic Stress On Atlantic Croaker Otolith Chemistry, John Mohan, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas, Benjamin Walther Jan 2014

Influence Of Constant And Periodic Experimental Hypoxic Stress On Atlantic Croaker Otolith Chemistry, John Mohan, Md. Saydur Rahman, Peter Thomas, Benjamin Walther

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The chemical composition of fish otoliths may provide information on the environmental exposure histories of fishes if ‘vital effects’ on element incorporation are minimal. In order to use redox-sensitive geochemical proxies, such as manganese, in otoliths to quantify sublethal exposure to hypoxia, the relative influence of endogenous and exogenous controls on otolith composition must first be validated. Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted on Atlantic croaker Micropogonias undulatus to examine the response of otolith Sr:Ca, Ba:Ca, Mg:Ca, Mn:Ca, and Na:Ca ratios to either constant or periodic hypoxia treatments for 4 and 10 wk, respectively. Although fish somatic growth and condition were …

Intraspecific Variation In Carapace Morphology Among Fiddler Crabs (Genus Uca) From The Atlantic Coast Of Brazil, Kelsey R. Hampton, Melanie J. Hopkins, John C. Mcnamara, Carl L. Thurman Jan 2014

Intraspecific Variation In Carapace Morphology Among Fiddler Crabs (Genus Uca) From The Atlantic Coast Of Brazil, Kelsey R. Hampton, Melanie J. Hopkins, John C. Mcnamara, Carl L. Thurman

Faculty Work

Isolation due to geographical barriers should promote genetic and morphological divergence among populations. Marine currents flowing in opposing directions along landmasses can constitute barriers that isolate populations dependent upon aquatic dispersal. The distribution of fiddler crabs (genus Uca) is regulated primarily by the oceanic transport of their planktonic larvae and by available adult habitat. Along the Brazilian coast of eastern South America, the flow of 2 major oceanic currents separates northern from southern Uca populations, which may promote intraspecific divergence in ‘trans-Brazilian’ species. Populations of 10 Uca species were sampled at 64 locations north and south of the Ponta …

Normative Minor Childhood Stress And Risk Of Later Adult Psychopathology In Saudi Arabia, M Hyland Jan 2014

Normative Minor Childhood Stress And Risk Of Later Adult Psychopathology In Saudi Arabia, M Hyland

School of Psychology

Chronic minor childhood stress in the form of corporal punishment predicts adult psychopathology in the United States but has not been demonstrated in a country where corporal punishment is normative. We tested whether adult psychopathology was predicted by recalled frequency of childhood corporal punishment and recalled controllability of punishment in Saudi Arabia. Two hundred and fifty nine Saudi men with substance addictions (who for cultural reasons were at risk for depression) completed a survey measuring: demographic variables, frequency of beating and controllability of punishment as a child, depression and borderline personality disorder symptoms (BPD). Beating frequency and punishment control were …

Conversion of prion protein (PrPC) into a pathological isoform (PrPSc) during prion infection occurs in lipid rafts and is dependent on cholesterol. Here, we show that prion infection increases the abundance of cholesterol transporter, ATP-binding cassette transporter type A1 (ATP-binding cassette transporter type A1), but reduces cholesterol efflux from neuronal cells leading to the accumulation of cellular cholesterol. Increased abundance of ABCA1 in prion disease was confirmed in prion-infected mice. Mechanistically, conversion of PrPC to the pathological isoform led to PrPSc accumulation in rafts, displacement of ABCA1 from rafts and the cell surface, and …

Ecology, Information Literacy And Bernard Lonergan: A Librarian Immersed, Lisa Rose-Wiles

Library Publications

In spring 2013 a group of faculty and administrators completed a series of workshops exploring Bernard Lonergan's General Empirical Method (GEM) and ways to apply it to our teaching. GEM invites students to learn how to think for themselves and discover themselves as learners. There are three initial steps - experiencing, understanding, and judging - which can readily be applied to searching, discovering and evaluating information resources. I report on my collaboration with a Biology professor teaching "Ecology and Stewardship," where we jointly incorporated elements of GEM, information literacy and the research process and developed rubrics for assessing student work.

Zoogeography Of Mole Crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) In The West Indies, J. H. Frank, Earl D. Mccoy Jan 2014

Zoogeography Of Mole Crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) In The West Indies, J. H. Frank, Earl D. Mccoy

Insecta Mundi

Four species of mole crickets (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) are known from the West Indies: Neocurtilla hexadactyla (Perty), Scapteriscus abbreviatus Scudder, S. didactylus (Latreille), and S. imitatus Nickle and Castner. All are adventive (not native). We document their distributions in West Indian islands/countries by use of records from the literature and examination of specimens. Scapteriscus abbreviatus has been suggested to have arrived in, and been transported about the West Indies in ship ballast (immigration). Based on records of arrival in various parts of the West Indies and the species’ inability to fly, this suggestion seems reasonable. Scapteriscus imitatus apparently was released in …

Growth Inhibitory Response And Ultrastructural Modification Of Oral-Associated Candidal Reference Strains (Atcc) By Piper Betle L. Extract, M.A.F. Nordin, Wan Harun Himratul-Aznita, Fathilah Abdul Razak, M.Y. Musa

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Candida species have been associated with the emergence of strains resistant to selected antifungal agents. Plant products have been used traditionally as alternative medicine to ease mucosal fungal infections. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Piper betle extract on the growth profile and the ultrastructure of commonly isolated oral candidal cells. The major component of P. betle was identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (LC-MS/MS). Seven ATCC control strains of Candida species were cultured in yeast peptone dextrose broth under four different growth environments: (i) in the absence of P. betle extract; and in the presence of P. betle …

Species Coexistence And The Dynamics Of Phenotypic Evolution In Adaptive Radiation, Joseph A. Tobias, Charlie K. Cornwallis, Elizabeth P. Derryberry, Santiago Claramunt, Robb T. Brumfield, Nathalie Seddon Jan 2014

Species Coexistence And The Dynamics Of Phenotypic Evolution In Adaptive Radiation, Joseph A. Tobias, Charlie K. Cornwallis, Elizabeth P. Derryberry, Santiago Claramunt, Robb T. Brumfield, Nathalie Seddon

Faculty Publications

Interactions between species can promote evolutionary divergence of ecological traits and social signals, a process widely assumed to generate species differences in adaptive radiation. However, an alternative view is that lineages typically interact when relatively old, by which time selection for divergence is weak and potentially exceeded by convergent selection acting on traits mediating interspecific competition. Few studies have tested these contrasting predictions across large radiations, or by controlling for evolutionary time. Thus the role of species interactions in driving broad-scale patterns of trait divergence is unclear. Here we use phylogenetic estimates of divergence times to show that increased trait …

Combined Antiproliferative Effects Of The Aminoalkylindole Win55,212-2 And Radiation In Breast Cancer Cells, Sean Emery Jan 2014

Combined Antiproliferative Effects Of The Aminoalkylindole Win55,212-2 And Radiation In Breast Cancer Cells, Sean Emery

Theses and Dissertations

The potential antitumor activity of mixed CB1/CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonists, such as the aminoalkylindole WIN55,212-2 (WIN2), has been extensively studied, but little information is available as to their potential interaction with conventional cancer therapies, such as ionizing radiation (IR). In the present work, we investigated the effects of WIN2 on the antiproliferative effects of radiation in human (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and murine (4T1) breast cancer cells, as well as an immortalized human breast epithelial cell line (MCF-10A). WIN2 or radiation alone inhibited breast tumor growth, while the combination of WIN2 and radiation was more effective than either agent alone in …

Morphogenesis And Propagation Of Complex Cracks Induced By Thermal Shocks, Blaise Bourdin, Jean Jacques Marigo, Corrado Maurini, Paul Sicsic

Faculty Publications

We study the genesis and the selective propagation of complex crack networks induced by thermal shock or drying of brittle materials. We use a quasistatic gradient damage model to perform large-scale numerical simulations showing that the propagation of fully developed cracks follows Griffith criterion and depends only on the fracture toughness, while crack morphogenesis is driven by the material's internal length. Our numerical simulations feature networks of parallel cracks and selective arrest in two dimensions and hexagonal columnar joints in three dimensions, without any hypotheses on cracks geometry, and are in good agreement with available experimental results. © 2014 American …

Detection Of Homocysteine With Bridged Viologen Chemical Probes, Davin Rautiola Jan 2014

Detection Of Homocysteine With Bridged Viologen Chemical Probes, Davin Rautiola

Dissertations and Theses

Increased blood plasma concentrations of the aminothiol homocysteine (Hcy) are associated with a variety of disease states including those which cause impaired renal function, many forms of cardiovascular disease, and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Therefore, Hcy has the potential to be a significant diagnostic biomarker. Routine monitoring of Hcy plasma concentration is encumbered by the time and resources required to quantify Hcy using currently accepted instrumental analysis methods. As part of the continuing effort to develop a quick, reliable, inexpensive, and user-friendly test to quantify Hcy at the point of care, we have designed a series of novel colorimetric …

Bsa–Boronic Acid Conjugate As Lectin Mimetics, Satya Nandana Narla, Poornima Pinnamaneni, Huan Nie, Yu Li, Xue-Long Sun

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We report bovine serum albumin (BSA)–boronic acid (BA) conjugates as lectin mimetics and their glyco-capturing capacity. The BSA–BA conjugates were synthesized by amidation of carboxylic acid groups in BSA with aminophenyl boronic acid in the presence of EDC, and were characterized by Alizarin Red S (ARS) assay and SDS–PAGE gel. The BSA–BA conjugates were immobilized onto maleimide-functionalized silica beads and their sugar capturing capacity and specificity were confirmed by ARS displacement assay. Further, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis of the glyco-capturing activity of the BSA–BA conjugates was conducted by immobilizing BSA–BA onto SPR gold chip. Overall, we demonstrated a BSA–BA-based …

Simultaneous Removal Of Organic Matter And Nitrate From Aqueous Solutions Using A Bio-Electrochemical Reactor / Mook Wei Tze, Wei Tze Mook

Student Works (2010-2019)

In this research an up-flow undivided bio-electrochemical reactor is used for treating simultaneously organic matter and nitrates in aqueous solutions. Nitrate elimination takes place at the cathode while organic substance is oxidized at the anode. The cathode material is palm shell granular activated carbon coated with a film of autohydrogenotrophic bacteria. A nano-crystalline PbO2 coated carbon combination was compared against various anodic materials namely stainless steel, titanium, graphite and carbon felts. The results showed that PbO2 provided better performance in the elimination of both pollutants. As such PbO2 was used to study the effects of major operating parameters such as …

Background

Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR) of soybean, caused by Phytophthora sojae, is controlled byRps genes. However, little is known regarding the Rps-induced molecular responses to P. sojaeand how they actually overlap. We thus sequenced, analyzed, and compared the transcriptomes of 10 near isogenic lines (NILs), each with a unique Rps gene/allele, and the susceptible parent Williams, pre- and post-inoculation with the pathogen.

Results

A total of 4,330 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in Williams versus 2,014 to 5,499 DEGs in individual NILs upon inoculation with the pathogen. Comparisons of the DEGs between the …

Wind Erosion, Ted M. Zobeck, R. Scott Van Pelt Jan 2014

Wind Erosion, Ted M. Zobeck, R. Scott Van Pelt

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Wind erosion refers to the detachment, transport, and deposition of sediment by wind. It is a dynamic, physical process where loose, dry, bare soils are transported by strong winds. Geomorphologists and other earth scientists usually consider wind erosion as a specific subdiscipline of a more broad study of aeolian (also spelled eolian) processes. The term aeolian is derived from the Greek god Aeolus, the keeper of the winds, so aeolian processes refer to effects produced by the force of the wind interacting with surface features. Although aeolian research spans a wide range of topics, which may even include research on …

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience

Regulation of cellular proliferation and differentiation during brain development results from processes requiring several regulatory networks to function in synchrony. MicroRNAs are part of this regulatory system. Although many microRNAs are evolutionarily conserved, recent evolution of such regulatory molecules can enable the acquisition of new means of attaining specialized functions. Here we identify and report the novel expression and functions of a human and higher primate-specific microRNA, miR-1290, in neurons. Using human fetal-derived neural progenitors, SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cell line and H9-ESC-derived neural progenitors (H9-NPC), we found miR-1290 to be upregulated during neuronal differentiation, using microarray, northern blotting and qRT-PCR. We …
