Investigation Of The Mitochondrial B Haplotype Preponderance In The Lake Titicaca Basin Populations Of Peru, Michael Malan, Dr. Scott R. Woodward

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Advances in recombinant DNA technology have greatly assisted the study of human population history by helping to shed light on human origins and relationships. Study of the extra nuclear mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) has been a most significant tool used in these investigations. Numerous studies designed with the purpose of documenting world wide genetic diversity and distribution have used the mitochondrial genome as their primary focus. Most significant to this research are those which focus on the mtDNA of New World peoples. Past research has identified and confirmed the existence of 4 major mitochondrial haplotypes (A, B, C, D) present in …

Bax Over-Expression Coupled With Bcl-2 Suppression Under The Control Of The Cancer-Specific Thymidine Kinase Promoter, Brian H. Ladle, Dr. Kim L. O'Neill

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As researchers continue to discover the molecular origins of cancer, gene therapy targeting cellular processes gone awry shows great promise as the future in cancer treatment. Extensive research is being done to develop more effective techniques targeting different cellular events. One pathway receiving increased attention is apoptosis (the default mechanisms activated intracellularly by extensive damage, causing the cell to kill itself). Often cancer will develop when genetic mutations or other cellular events render the cells unable to die by apoptosis. My research investigates a novel gene therapy that will restore the cancer cell’s ability to die by apoptosis, while limiting …

Ultra High-Resolution Gene Centric Genomic Structural Analysis Of A Non-Syndromic Congenital Heart Defect, Tetralogy Of Fallot., Douglas C. Bittel, Xin-Gang Zhou, Nataliya Kibiryeva, Stephanie Fiedler, James E. O'Brien, Jennifer A. Marshall, Shihui Yu, Hong-Yu Liu

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is one of the most common severe congenital heart malformations. Great progress has been made in identifying key genes that regulate heart development, yet approximately 70% of TOF cases are sporadic and nonsyndromic with no known genetic cause. We created an ultra high-resolution gene centric comparative genomic hybridization (gcCGH) microarray based on 591 genes with a validated association with cardiovascular development or function. We used our gcCGH array to analyze the genomic structure of 34 infants with sporadic TOF without a deletion on chromosome 22q11.2 (n male = 20; n female = 14; age range of …

Differentiating Schizophrenic Patients From Healthy Control; Application Of Machine Learning To Resting State Fmri, Hossein Ebrahimi Nezhad

Theses

In recent years, one analysis approach that has grown in popularity is the use of machine learning algorithms to train classifiers to decode stimuli, mental states, behaviors and other variables of interest from fMRI data. Most of these studies focus on fMRI low frequency oscillations. This study focuses on the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF). A Voxel-wise analysis is performed on the whole brain for two groups of subjects. A machine learning algorithm is applied to two independent groups of subjects (a total of 160 healthy control and schizophrenic subjects) to classify Schizophrenia …

Mathematically Modeling The Mechanical Constants Of Thoracolumbar Fascia Under Compression, In Vivo, Vrajeshri Patel Jan 2014

Mathematically Modeling The Mechanical Constants Of Thoracolumbar Fascia Under Compression, In Vivo, Vrajeshri Patel

Theses

The thoracolumbar fascia (TLF) is a complex structure made of many interconnecting aponeurosis and muscle fascia. It plays a role in posture, stabilizing the lumbosacral spine, load transfer, and respiration. Its complex structure and connections have mostly been observed through cadaveric studies while its mechanical properties have been addressed in only a few studies. Recently, new advances in ultrasound imaging have made it possible to move towards measuring tissue strain. Since this is an in vivo method, mechanical data of tissues in their natural environment allows a more accurate representation of tissue strain. However, many different methods of analyzing ultrasound …

Comparison Of Different Differential Expression Analysis Tools For Rna-Seq Data, Junfei Zhu Jan 2014

Comparison Of Different Differential Expression Analysis Tools For Rna-Seq Data, Junfei Zhu

Theses

In molecular biology research, RNA-seq is a relatively new method for transcriptome profiling. It utilizes the next generation sequencing technology to provide huge amount information about the variety and abundance of RNA present in an organism of interest at a specific state and a given time. One of the most important tasks of RNA-seq analysis is finding genes that are expressed differently in different subject groups. A lot of differential expression analysis tools for RNA-seq have been developed, but there is no golden standard in this field. In this research, four commonly used tools (DESeq, edgeR, limma, and cuffdiff) are …

Using The Piezoelectric Backscatter Signal For Remote Sensing Of Neural Signals, Eren Alay Jan 2014

Using The Piezoelectric Backscatter Signal For Remote Sensing Of Neural Signals, Eren Alay

Theses

In recent studies, various methods to sense neural signals are used and new methods for remote sensing of neural signals are being developed. However, there are still major difficulties in building long-term implantable neural interface systems that can reliably record neural activity and serve as the basis of brain-machine interfaces (BMI). Therefore, this research is conducted to design a remote neural sensing system that is based on modulation of the backscatter signal from a piezoelectric element by the neural signals. The hypothesis is that if the neural signal is detected with a simple amplifier and the output of this amplifier …

The Wyeth vs. Levine case is presented which highlights the significance of a common direction between federal and state government. The presumption against federal preemption that guided the Court's decision is discussed. The possible consequences from denying federal preemption for prescription drugs are discussed.

Health, Health Care, And Rights: A New Natural Law Theory Perspective, Samuel Gregg Jan 2014

Health, Health Care, And Rights: A New Natural Law Theory Perspective, Samuel Gregg

Notre Dame Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy

The article explores the use of the new natural law theory (NNLT) in determining what rights are associated with health care, if any, and how to realize such rights. NNLT's vision of free choice leading to reasonable acts helps establish that health is a basic good which is a foundation of rights recognized by the state. It emphasizes that NNLT rules out collectivization of health care and any system that denies the state in providing a health care right.

Physiological Effects Of Habitat Disturbance In The Wandering Gartersnake (Thamnophis Elegans), Austin Spence Jan 2014

Physiological Effects Of Habitat Disturbance In The Wandering Gartersnake (Thamnophis Elegans), Austin Spence

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

This study investigated the physiological effects of localized habitat disturbance around well-studied hibernacula of the wandering gartersnake, Thamnophis elegans. After three years of monitoring snake populations, construction occurred at two hibernacula. Individuals from the two populations with construction events were compared to a control population with no construction. At the time of emergence from the hibernacula the year following construction, blood samples were collected upon capture and again following a uniform stressor. The plasma was analyzed using a radioimmunoassay to measure corticosterone levels and a bacterial killing assay to measure innate immunocompetence. There were differences in baseline and post-stress …

Analysis Of Mexican Spotted Owl Diet In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Natalie Schvaneveldt Jan 2014

Analysis Of Mexican Spotted Owl Diet In The Canyonlands Of Southern Utah, Natalie Schvaneveldt

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

While diets of Mexican Spotted Owls within forested habitat have been studied, little research has been published on the diet of owls that occupy canyon habitats (see Willey In Press). Since the Mexican Spotted Owl is federally listed as a threatened species, it is important to identify primary prey of Utah’s canyon dwelling owls to better understand their dietary needs (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 1993). We hope that the findings from this research can better inform state and federal managers on spotted owl prey use and aid in future management of small mammal populations in canyon habitats. We intend …

Family Financial Investment In Organized Youth Sport, Michael King, Kevin Rothlisberger Jan 2014

Family Financial Investment In Organized Youth Sport, Michael King, Kevin Rothlisberger

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Nearly 90% of American youth participate in organized youth sport during childhood and/or adolescence. Parents are important contributors, as they typically encourage/ initiate children’s sport involvement and provide instrumental and emotional support for children over their careers. Although parent involvement is instrumental in youth sport, media and anecdotal reports often characterize sport parents as a necessary evil. This has led to a cultural debate on the appropriateness of parent involvement in youth sport, and what impact that might have on child outcomes. However, despite the rising costs associated with youth sport participation, few researchers have examined the potential impact of …

Long-‐Term Evaluation Of Leafy Spurge Biological Control At Richmond, Utah, Jacob Anderson Jan 2014

Long-‐Term Evaluation Of Leafy Spurge Biological Control At Richmond, Utah, Jacob Anderson

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Leafy spurge (LS) is an aggressive Eurasian weed that has been reduced in many areas in North America through biological control releases of flea beetles. Three flea beetle species were released in the mid-1990s at a site dominated by LS in Richmond, Utah. This study assessed the long term effects of LS biocontrol on the plant community at this site by addressing four questions:

(1) Is LS abundance significantly lower in 2013 than it was in the 1990s?

(2) What plant species are replacing LS and are they native or non-native?

(3) Have the flea beetle populations persisted since their …

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost Jan 2014

The Effects Of Music On Subjects With Alzheimer And Dementia Disease In Cache Valley, Landon Frost

Research on the Hill (Salt Lake City)

Music has been shown to trigger old memories and induce various levels of stress relief and relaxation. My research focused on the effects of music on subjects with Alzheimer and Dementia disease. Eleven patients were selected through an informed consent process which included permission from responsible family members. During the course of three or more visits to patients in their care centers, the subjects listened to a variety of songs. These included songs that family members thought would be personally meaningful based on their knowledge of the patient’s past experiences with music. Other popular songs were selected to represent a …

Forgotten Battles Of The Civil War: Victories Over Disease In Nashville, Tennessee, And New Orleans, Louisiana, Michael Packer, Dr. Mary Stovall Richards

Journal of Undergraduate Research

During the Civil War disease was a major problem. Many different diseases combined to cause immense problems for civilians and army personnel alike. More soldiers died from disease than from battle. While medical knowledge was growing, physicians had neither the knowledge nor the understanding to combat most diseases. Doctors both North and South had little success against many illnesses.

Application Of Isothermal Calorimetry To Phosphorus Sorption Onto Soils In A Flow-Through System, Chad Penn, Derek M. Heeren, Garey A. Fox, Ajay Kumar Jan 2014

Application Of Isothermal Calorimetry To Phosphorus Sorption Onto Soils In A Flow-Through System, Chad Penn, Derek M. Heeren, Garey A. Fox, Ajay Kumar

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The degree, mechanisms, and kinetics of phosphorus (P) sorption onto soils can have a significant influence on leaching losses of P from soil. The objectives of this study were to measure the impact of retention time (RT) on P sorption in a flow-through system intended to simulate downward movement of a P solution through two different riparian soils, and determine if isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) can provide useful information reflective of flow-through results. Topsoil from two riparian/alluvial sites (Barren Fork and Clear Creek) was sampled and characterized for P concentrations and parameters related to P sorption. Flow-through P sorption experiments …

Acanthamoeba And Bacteria Produce Antimicrobials To Target Their Counterpart, Junaid Iqbal, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Naveed Ahmed Khan Jan 2014

Acanthamoeba And Bacteria Produce Antimicrobials To Target Their Counterpart, Junaid Iqbal, Ruqaiyyah Siddiqui, Naveed Ahmed Khan

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Background

In the microbial ecosystem, microbes compete for space and nutrients. Consequently, some have developed the ability to kill or inhibit the growth of other competing microbes by producing antimicrobial substances. As the ‘producer’ species are generally immune to these substances, their compounds act on the competing microbial species and give the producer more space and access to nutrients for growth. Many currently used antibiotics were developed by exploiting this potential of certain microbes.

Findings

Here, the free-living amoeba, Acanthamoeba castellanii, was investigated for its antibacterial activity against representative Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, while bacterial isolates were …
