Engaging large numbers of undergraduates in authentic scientific discovery is desirable but difficult to achieve. We have developed a general model in which faculty and teaching assistants from diverse academic institutions are trained to teach a research course for first-year undergraduate students focused on bacteriophage discovery and genomics. The course is situated within a broader scientific context aimed at understanding viral diversity, such that faculty and students are collaborators with established researchers in the field. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) course has been widely implemented and has been …

Here the inventors describe a tumor classifier based on protein expression. Also disclosed is the use of proteomics to construct a highly accurate artificial neural network (ANN)-based classifier for the detection of an individual tumor type, as well as distinguishing between six common tumor types in an unknown primary diagnosis setting. Discriminating sets of proteins are also identified and are used as biomarkers for six carcinomas. A leave-one-out cross validation (LOOCV) method was used to test the ability of the constructed network to predict the single held out sample from each iteration with a maximum predictive accuracy of 87% and …

The disclosed modulators of Rb:Raf-1 interactions are potent, selective disruptors of Rb:Raf-1 binding, with IC50 values ranging from 80 nM to 500 nM. Further, these compounds are surprisingly effective in inhibiting a wide variety of cancer cells, including osteosarcoma, epithelial lung carcinoma, non-small cell lung carcinoma, three different pancreatic cancer cell lines, two different glioblastoma cell lines, metastatic breast cancer, melanoma, and prostate cancer. Moreover, the disclosed compounds effectively disrupt angiogenesis and significantly inhibited tumors in nude mice derived from human epithelial lung carcinoma tumors. Accordingly, the disclosed compounds, pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compounds, methods of inhibiting cell proliferation, methods …

The emergence of agriculture in West-Central Africa approximately 5,000 years ago, profoundly modified the cultural landscape and mode of subsistence of most sub-Saharan populations. How this major innovation has had an impact on the genetic history of rainforest hunter-gatherers—historically referred to as ‘pygmies’—and agriculturalists, however, remains poorly understood. Here we report genome-wide SNP data from these populations located west-to-east of the equatorial rainforest. We find that hunter-gathering populations present up to 50% of farmer genomic ancestry, and that substantial admixture began only within the last 1,000 years. Furthermore, we show that the historical population sizes characterizing these communities already differed …

The Use Of Geographic Information Systems By Law Enforcement Agencies And Its Impact On Police Performance, Kun Ulvi
Theses and Dissertations
Do we know whether the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in law enforcement agencies increases police performance? This study examines the impact of GIS use to police performance outcomes in cities and counties of the U.S. between 2000 and 2007. Current research uses computerized mapping conceptualization to operationalize its measurement. Second, the police performance methodological context is used to measure the organizational impact of GIS. Finally, a new theoretical framework, information technology capacity that combines organizational, environmental and managerial factors to explain IT applications, is used to encompass most relevant dimensions of the subject matter. Findings indicate that the …

The avoidance of motorized vehicles is a common challenge for birds in the modern world. Birds appear to rely on antipredator behaviors to avoid vehicles, but modern vehicles (automobiles and aircraft) are faster than natural predators. Thus, birds may be relatively ill-equipped, in terms of sensory capabilities and behaviors, to avoid vehicles. We examined the idea that birds may be unable to accurately assess particularly high speeds of approaching vehicles, which could contribute to miscalculations in avoidance behaviors and ultimately cause collisions. We baited turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) to roads with animal carcasses and measured flight initiation distance and effective …

Recovering A Forgotten Pioneer Of Science Studies: C. E. Ayres’ Deweyan Critique Of Science And Technology, David I. Waddington
Recovering A Forgotten Pioneer Of Science Studies: C. E. Ayres’ Deweyan Critique Of Science And Technology, David I. Waddington
Education and Culture
This paper brings to light the ideas of a pioneering but largely forgotten social critic, C. E. Ayres. In his first book, Science: The False Messiah (1927), which was written in consultation with John Dewey, Ayres advanced a forceful and original critique of science and technology. He argued that technological change was occurring at a pace that had overwhelmed existing social institutions, and further claimed that efforts to solve the problem by educating citizens about science and technology would prove fruitless. The analysis presented in this paper outlines Ayres’ key arguments, examines the mutual influences between Dewey and Ayres, and …
Exploring The Ideal Of Teaching As Consummatory Experience, Sevket Benhur Oral
Exploring The Ideal Of Teaching As Consummatory Experience, Sevket Benhur Oral
Education and Culture
In this article, it is argued that fulfilling teaching and educative experiences go hand in hand. Not only is it possible to be fully alive as a teacher, it is also essential for educative experience to unfold in students. To substantiate the claim made here, an analysis of what I would like to call the ideal of teaching as consummatory experience is engaged based on John Dewey’s concept of experience as this was elucidated in his later works, especially Art as Experience. Given an intimate understanding of Deweyan consummatory experience, its implications for teaching and teacher education programs are considered.
The Paradox Of Freedom: John Dewey On Human Nature, Culture, And Education, Cherilyn Keall
The Paradox Of Freedom: John Dewey On Human Nature, Culture, And Education, Cherilyn Keall
Education and Culture
In this paper, I argue that John Dewey's view of human nature entails that culture is a necessary but not sufficient condition for freedom. A surprising corollary of this argument is that, if left to run its natural course, culture in fact tends not to enable but rather to preclude freedom. Hence, there are specific cultural practices—habits acquired through education—that are required if we are to realize our freedom and thereby also fulfill our nature as human beings.
