High-Resolution Mri For 3d Biomechanical Modeling: Signal Optimization Through Rf Coil Design And Mr Relaxometry, James A. Badal
Theses and Dissertations
Computed Tomography (CT) is often used for building 3D biomechanical models of human anatomy. This method exposes the subject to a significant x-ray dose and provides limited soft-tissue contrast. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a potential alternative to CT for this application, as MRI offers significantly better soft-tissue contrast and does not expose the subject to ionizing radiation. However, MRI requires long scan times to achieve 3D images at sufficient resolution, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). These long scan times can make subject motion a problem. This thesis describes my work to reduce scan time while achieving sufficient …

BACKGROUND: Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive phospholipid with a potentially causative role in neurotrauma. Blocking LPA signaling with the LPA-directed monoclonal antibody B3/Lpathomab is neuroprotective in the mouse spinal cord following injury.
FINDINGS: Here we investigated the use of this agent in treatment of secondary brain damage consequent to traumatic brain injury (TBI). LPA was elevated in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with TBI compared to controls. LPA levels were also elevated in a mouse controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI and B3 significantly reduced lesion volume by both histological and MRI assessments. Diminished tissue damage coincided with …
Cold Shock Domain Proteins In Normal And Leukemic Hematopoiesis, Cheng Li
Cold Shock Domain Proteins In Normal And Leukemic Hematopoiesis, Cheng Li
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Cold shock domain (CSD) proteins are the most evolutionarily conserved family of nucleic-acid binding proteins. There are four functional genes that contain CSDs in humans and mice: YBX1, MSY4, MSY2, and CSDE1. YBX1 is overexpressed in most cancers, and is frequently associated with poor outcomes and chemotherapy resistance. Both YBX1 and MSY4 are highly expressed in normal hematopoietic progenitors, and both are downregulated with terminal myeloid differentiation; both genes are highly expressed in virtually all cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). These two genes are functionally redundant as well: Msy4 has been shown to complement Ybx1 function in late-stage embryogenesis …

Tyrosine kinases (TKs) specifically catalyze the phosphorylation of tyrosine residues in proteins and play essential roles in many cellular processes. Although TKs mainly exist in animals, recent studies revealed that some organisms outside the Opisthokont clade also contain TKs. The fungi, as the sister group to animals, are thought to lack TKs. To better understand the origin and evolution of TKs, it is important to investigate if fungi have TK or TK-related genes. We therefore systematically identified possible TKs across the fungal kingdom by using the profile hidden Markov Models searches and phylogenetic analyses. Our results confirmed that fungi lack …

A Systematic Study Of The Optical And Electrical Properties Of Ge1-YSnY And Ge1-X-YSiXSnY Semiconductor Alloys, Thomas R. Harris
Theses and Dissertations
In order to fully utilize newly developed Ge1-ySny and Ge1-x-ySixSny materials for new novel optoelectronic devices, the optical and electrical properties of these alloys were investigated using photoluminescence (PL) and Hall-effect measurements. Direct bandgap PL emission was observed from almost all the samples, making them very promising candidates for Si-based light emitting devices. T-dependent PL studies also indicate that the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition of Ge1-ySny alloys might take place at a much lower Sn content than the theory predicts. T-dependent Hall-effect measurements showed both degenerate parallel conducting layers as …

The Federal Circuit’s expansion of patentable subject matter in the 1990s led to a threefold increase in software patents, many of which contain abstract ideas merely tethered to a general-purpose computer. There is little evidence, however, to suggest this expansion has produced an increase in software innovation. The software industry was highly innovative in the decade immediately prior to this expansion, when the viability of software patentability was unclear and software patents were few. When surveyed, most software developers oppose software patenting, and, in practice, software innovators tend to rely on other tools to capture market share such as first-mover …

Snp-Induced Dilation Following A Short-Term Intraluminal Pressure Increase In Aged Skeletal Muscle Feed Arteries, John W. Seawright, Meredith J. Luttrell, Christopher R. Woodman
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A decline in peripheral vascular function occurs with age and is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Moderate, aerobic exercise has been documented to improve or reverse the age-related decline in vascular function. The signal(s) associated with exercise responsible for the improvement in vascular function is not known; however, increased intraluminal pressure that occurs during a bout of exercise has been proposed to play an integral role. Previously, we reported that exposure to a short-term increase in intraluminal pressure improves endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses in aged arteries. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pressure treatment enhances …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle mass and strength play critical roles in quality of life, and significant muscle atrophy contributes to reduced function and can exacerbate some disease states. It is well-known that persistent reductions of mechanical loading in skeletal muscle result in degeneration. Generally, reductions of muscle protein synthesis are, at least in part, a major culprit with muscle loss under these conditions, and numerous countermeasures such as exercise and nutritional supplements, known to stimulate protein synthesis have been designed to maintain muscle mass under those conditions. Amino acid supplementation, particularly with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), has been suggested as a countermeasure …

Current global statistics estimate that 44.4 million people are afflicted with dementia, and that 50%-75% of these patients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (AD; Prince et al. 2013). AD, a progressive disorder categorized by neuronal and behavioral deterioration, is the 6th leading cause of death in America (Alz facts and figure 2012). One hallmark pathology of AD is the presence of amyloid-beta (Aβ) in the brain, which can limit cell-to-cell communication, leading to cognitive deficits, and neuronal cell death. Although the exact origins of this disease still remain unknown, one possible catalyst of AD pathology is inflammation. Our lab has …
