River Health In Puyo, Ecuador The Use Of Macroinvertebrates As Bioindicators Of Water Quality And Alternatives To Chlorine For Whitening Clothes In The Puyo River Watershed, Allison Rowe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Fresh water is an important resource in Puyo, Ecuador, a city named after the Kichwa word for ‘cloudy’ in reference to its overcast weather. However, the Puyo River watershed is the most contaminated in all of Pastaza Province. The objective of this investigation was first to evaluate the health of the Puyo River using macroinvertebrate analyses and measurements of chlorine concentrations, temperature, pH, turbidity, velocity, and flow rate. The second objective was to learn about practices used to whiten clothes in Puyo and perceptions of water quality in order to understand the magnitude of bleach pollution and the population’s awareness …

The Effects Of Temperature And Seasons On Subcutaneous White Adipose Tissue In Humans: Evidence For Thermogenic Gene Induction, Philip A. Kern, Brian S. Finlin, Beibei Zhu, Neda Rasouli, Robert E. Mcgehee Jr., Philip M. Westgate, Esther E. Dupont-Versteegden Dec 2014

The Effects Of Temperature And Seasons On Subcutaneous White Adipose Tissue In Humans: Evidence For Thermogenic Gene Induction, Philip A. Kern, Brian S. Finlin, Beibei Zhu, Neda Rasouli, Robert E. Mcgehee Jr., Philip M. Westgate, Esther E. Dupont-Versteegden

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Context: Although brown adipose tissue (BAT) activity is increased by a cold environment, little is known of the response of human white adipose tissue (WAT) to the cold.

Design: We examined both abdominal and thigh subcutaneous (SC) WAT from 71 subjects who were biopsied in the summer or winter, and adipose expression was assessed after an acute cold stimulus applied to the thigh of physically active young subjects.

Results: In winter, UCP1 and PGC1 α mRNA were increased 4 to 10-fold (p<0.05) and 1.5 to 2-fold, respectively, along with beige adipose markers, and UCP1 protein was 3-fold higher in the winter. The seasonal increase in abdominal SC WAT UCP1 mRNA was considerably diminished in subjects with a BMI > 30 kg/m2, suggesting that dysfunctional WAT in obesity inhibits adipose thermogenesis. After applying an acute …

Translating And Adapting The Postt For Formative Assessment Of Indonesian Preservice Science Teachers’ Pedagogical Orientations, Listiani Dec 2014

Translating And Adapting The Postt For Formative Assessment Of Indonesian Preservice Science Teachers’ Pedagogical Orientations, Listiani

Masters Theses

Indonesia has experienced problems in teacher quality, especially science teachers. Regarding this problem, a teacher-training program, in which preservice teachers are directed to use the most appropriate science teaching methods, is important to prepare qualified teachers. Having formative assessments for assessing Indonesian preservice science teachers’ teaching orientations is important. Therefore, the Pedagogy of Science Teaching Test (POSTT) was translated and adapted into Bahasa as a formative assessment for preservice science teachers. There were eight steps to translate and validate the POSTT into Bahasa (Indonesian language). The translation and validation processes involved eight experts in the target language and eight science …

The Paradoxes Of Poverty: Urban Space And Ideologies Of Intervention In The "Compassionate" City Of San Francisco, Andrea M. Lopez

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines a subset of urban poor women who live at the nexus of poverty and housing instability and who are exposed to multiple forms of violence and intense bodily suffering. I conducted two years of ethnographic research with a cohort of unstably housed women who have long histories of illicit drug use and who cycle between multiple single room occupancy hotels in two San Francisco neighborhoods. In this dissertation, I take as my analytic object the examination of the key institutional sites (what I call the local geography of hypermarginality) and the strategies for intervention deployed by the …

A New Parameterized Architectural Design For Sense Reconstruction, M.F. Siddiqui, A.W. Reza, J. Kanesan, H. Omer

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Reconfigurable hardware based architectures that could provide good quality image reconstruction for parallel Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) within very less computation time are in high demand. Hardware platforms for specific reconstruction algorithms dramatically increase the power efficiency and decrease the execution time. This research proposes a new parameterized architecture design for Sensitivity Encoding (SENSE) reconstruction. This architecture is also synthesized for Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). Complex multiplier, divider and complex matrix multiplier modules are designed to implement the algorithm. Furthermore, the variable data bus widths are used in the data path of the architecture, which leads to reduce the …

Online Pattern Recognition In Subsequence Time Series Clustering, S. Zolhavarieh, S. Aghabozorgi, T.Y. Wah

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

One of the open issues in the context of subsequence time series clustering is online pattern recognition. There are different fields in this clustering such as e-commerce, outlier detection, speech recognition, biological systems, DNA recognition, and text mining. Among these fields pattern recognition is one the essential concept. To implement the idea of online pattern recognition, we choose sequences of ECG data as a subsequence time series data. Additionally, using ECG data can help to interpret heart activity for finding heart diseases. This paper will offer a way to generate online pattern recognition in subsequence time series clustering in order …

Students Seeking Attention, Dan Lecheler

Counselor Education Capstones

There are numerous reason’s to help explain why children behave the way they do. Sometimes they may be trying to selfishly get something, please an adult or are seeking praise and approval. Sometimes they may be trying to replace something that is absent from their life. Children are not adept at discussing their thoughts and feelings. Often times they communicate through their behavior. For elementary-aged students, the classroom becomes an early setting where disruptive behaviors can have them standing out from their same-aged peers. This Capstone Project will examine the possible correlation between students who disrupt their classrooms by way …

A Study Of Surface Modification On Current Orthopaedic Bioceramics After In Vivo Exposure To The Physiological Environment, Alexander William Wusylko

All Theses

Over 300,000 total hip replacement (THR) surgeries are performed annually in the United States with generally good clinical outcomes. Surgical registries around the world report that approximately 90% of implanted THR devices survive for ten years or longer after implantation. However, the trend of increasing incidence of THR, particularly among younger, more active patients has generated considerable interest in THR design improvements to increase the longevity of these devices. As a result, many new articular bearing materials have been introduced for THR in recognition of prosthesis wear as a leading failure reason for contemporary designs. Ceramic-on-ceramic articulations were first introduced …

Inlay Vs. Onlay: A Comparison Of Two Glenoid Systems In Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, Sarah Helms Dec 2014

Inlay Vs. Onlay: A Comparison Of Two Glenoid Systems In Total Shoulder Arthroplasty, Sarah Helms

All Theses

Loosening of the glenoid component via a 'rocking horse' phenomenon, whereby the glenoid loosens as a result of edge loading of the implant during mild off-axis motion, is a common complication of total shoulder arthroplasties (TSAs). Recently, a partial glenoid resurfacing implant, known as a glenoid inlay, has become available and due to its geometry has the potential to exhibit less rocking-horse loosening during humeral articulation than the standard glenoid onlay systems currently used in TSA. The inlay design is implanted centrally on the glenoid to match the surrounding anatomy with a fit that leaves it flush with the surrounding …

Liminal, Nina Kawar

All Theses

Throughout life everyone experiences both physical and psychological pains and adversities. In time, the body, mind and spirit are capable of healing. It is within this liminal space between infliction and renewal that the self endures an elusive process that is part of the human condition. Within my installation I have constructed a metaphor for the physical and psychological stages of healing through form, materials, color and process. The spatial environment evokes the literal and metaphorical notion of restoration through a visual, olfactory and physical experience. As the viewer navigates the space, it is the fragmentation and suggestion of form …

Study The Interactions Between Duplex And Quadruplex Dna And Some Transition Metal Ions, Masada Ahmed Al Briki Dec 2014

Study The Interactions Between Duplex And Quadruplex Dna And Some Transition Metal Ions, Masada Ahmed Al Briki

Theses

Nucleic acids control the machinery of living cells through coding different biochemical functions. Metal ions play a critical role in inducing and stabilizing different DNA structural conformations through interacting with various sites on nucleic acids. Interactions are controlled by the relative affinity of metal ions towards the negatively charged phosphate backbone and donor nitrogen or oxygen on nucleotide bases. Several studies have investigated the interactions of metal ions with duplex and higher orders DNA conformations. These interactions vary greatly, from monovalent alkali ions that are primarily delocalized in a diffuse cloud around duplex DNA to transition metals that are directly …

Rnase L Contributes To Experimentally Induced Type 1 Diabetes Onset In Mice, Chun Zeng, Xin Yi, Danny Zipris, Hongli Liu, Lin Zhang, Qiaoyun Zheng, Krishnamurthy Malathi, Ge Jin, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The cause of type 1 diabetes continues to be a focus of investigation. Studies have revealed that interferon α (IFNα) in pancreatic islets after viral infection or treatment with double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), a mimic of viral infection, is associated with the onset of type 1 diabetes. However, how IFNα contributes to the onset of type 1 diabetes is obscure. In this study, we found that 2-5A-dependent RNase L (RNase L), an IFNα-inducible enzyme that functions in the antiviral and antiproliferative activities of IFN, played an important role in dsRNA-induced onset of type 1 diabetes. Using RNase L-deficient, rat insulin promoter-B7.1 …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Oligodendrocyte Development, Cindy Viviana Leiton Dec 2014

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Oligodendrocyte Development, Cindy Viviana Leiton

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are characterized by their capacity for proliferation, migration, and maturation into myelinating oligodendrocytes. Among the known molecular mechanisms that regulate OPC development are 1) the extracellular matrix (ECM) protein laminin that is known to regulate OPC development as it is required for timely oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination, and 2) an oligodendroglial laminin receptor, dystroglycan, which regulates oligodendrocyte morphology and maturation. ECM proteins and receptors can be remodeled by proteolytic enzymes known as the matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), but little is known regarding these events and their consequent functions in CNS development and regeneration. While the laminin-dystroglycan adhesion …

Alternate Pore Isoforms Of A Mechanosensory Ion Channel In Drosophila, Shao-Kuei Huang Dec 2014

Alternate Pore Isoforms Of A Mechanosensory Ion Channel In Drosophila, Shao-Kuei Huang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis examines the expression and function of alternately spliced isoforms of No Mechanoreceptor Potential C (NOMPC), a TRPN ion channel protein expressed in several types of mechanosensory neuron in Drosophila. nompC mutant flies are severely uncoordinated; electrophysiological recordings show that they lack receptor currents in mechanosensory bristles and have reduced sound-evoked potentials in the antennal nerve. Exons 14 and 15 of the nompC gene both encode a highly conserved part of the protein, including the channel pore. To find how these exons are used, I first identified six different cDNA isoforms. Among these were two major isoforms with mutually …

The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson Dec 2014

The Effect Of Patch Dynamics And Nutrient Availability On The Production Of Zostera Marina Seeds Within Shinnecock Bay, Ny, Lisa Jackson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Exposing Zostera marina to fertilized porewater has been shown to increase vegetative shoot density and leaf growth rates, as well as affect morphological shoot characteristics including increasing leaf length, leaf area and the number of leaves per shoot. However, aside from changes in shoot density, records of morphological changes in reproductive shoots subjected to increased nutrient availability are lacking. To address this, five replicate ambient and nutrient enriched patches, each between 0.5 and 2.0 m2, were selected within a developing Z. marina meadow in Shinnecock Bay, NY. Fertilizer stakes, with a N:P:K of 15:3:3, were used to amend enriched patches …

Sorption Behavior Of Antimony(V) On Hydroxyapatite, Boyoung Song Dec 2014

Sorption Behavior Of Antimony(V) On Hydroxyapatite, Boyoung Song

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Antimony (Sb) is regarded as an emerging environmental contaminant, reflecting its previously unrecognized presence in aquatic and soil systems. Oxidative dissolution releases Sb into surface environments primarily in the form of oxyanions. A primary control on the mobility of Sb species is sorption onto mineral surfaces. Although recent studies have reported Sb sorption onto various mineral surfaces, no studies have been performed on the sorption behavior of Sb with hydroxyapatite, which is an effective sorbent. The objective of this study is to understand the sorption behavior of Sb(V) on the surface of hydroxyapatite, Ca5(PO4)3OH. The oxidized form of antimony, Sb(V), …

On The Subject Of Analyzing Iron And Sulfur Bearing Minerals From Three Extreme Environments: Geological Sequestration, Acid Mine Drainage, And Mars, Elizabeth Christ Sklute

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The global iron and sulfur cycles are linked to some of the most ancient metabolisms on our planet, and, therefore, possibly other planetary bodies. They are also linked to some of our most pressing environmental problems on Earth. Understanding their interactions and monitoring their occurrence is, therefore, an important aspect of exploring planetary bodies and sustainable resource management. This dissertation reports investigations into the identification and analysis of iron and sulfur bearing phases in three extreme environments: Acid-gas/CO2 co-sequestration, acid mine drainage (AMD), and Mars. H2S and SO2 (acid gases) are often co-contaminants in CO2 …

Stabilization And Transformation Of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate: Structural And Kinetic Studies, Millicent Promise Schmidt Dec 2014

Stabilization And Transformation Of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate: Structural And Kinetic Studies, Millicent Promise Schmidt

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a common transient precursor in the formation of more stable crystalline calcium carbonate minerals, most notably calcite, vaterite, and aragonite. Formation of ACC from calcium carbonate rich aqueous solution rather than direct crystallization of crystalline polymorphs by organisms provides several advantages: control of morphology, grain size, orientation, hardness, and other bulk properties as well as reduction of energy costs during growth cycles. Despite decades of study, stabilization and transformation mechanisms of synthetic and biogenic ACC remain unclear. In particular, the roles of H2O and inorganic phosphate in ACC structure and transformation, and the variables affecting …

Population Dynamics Of Juvenile Atlantic Sturgeon, Acipenser Oxyrinchus Oxyrinchus, Within The Northwest Atlantic Ocean, Keith Joseph Dunton

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus, an anadromous long-lived fish has experienced substantial population declines leading to its recent listing under the Endangered Species Act. While this fish occupies and requires both riverine and marine habitats, a lack of knowledge regarding marine distribution/habitat use is hindering conservation measures directed at restoring depleted populations. Currently, concerns exist that Atlantic sturgeon populations are being hindered by incidental captures along their migrations routes within the near shore coastal fisheries. In order to best manage human activities in a way that populations may recover fully, it is necessary to understand the association between Atlantic sturgeon …

Alterations To The Unique Dna Binding Mode Mediated By Mterf1 Have Implications Of Pathogenesis In Mitochondrial Disease, James Byrnes

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Human mitochondria are found in all eukaryotic cells. They are dynamic double membrane organelles that can vary in shape, size and amount depending on cell types. In humans, mitochondria contain a 16.5 kb genome that encodes for 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs and 13 proteins that make up the mitochondrial contribution of the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS). This system produces the majority of energy used by the cell in the form of ATP and is critical for cell viability. In order for the OXPHOS system to produce ATP, it is dependent on the proper expression of the mitochondrial genome. Thus, errors …

Surface Modification Of Adenovirus Type 5 Vectors Via Two-Step Metabolic Labeling For Pet Imaging, Jai Inder Pal Dec 2014

Surface Modification Of Adenovirus Type 5 Vectors Via Two-Step Metabolic Labeling For Pet Imaging, Jai Inder Pal

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Surface modification of viruses is of great interest for therapeutic gene delivery. Numerous viruses have been, and continue to be engineered in an attempt to optimize them for targeted in vivo gene therapy. Adenovirus has been shown by a myriad of publications to be the most efficient delivery vehicle in different cell types. But while it is the preferred delivery agent in many gene therapy studies, drawbacks such as off-targeting, immune response and toxicity still hinder it from being used in clinical studies. In an attempt to modify the surface of Adenovirus efficiently, our lab developed a simple two-step labeling …
