Effects Of Heregulin On Muscle: A Biochemical And Histological Analysis, Nicole Justine Moss May 2014

Effects Of Heregulin On Muscle: A Biochemical And Histological Analysis, Nicole Justine Moss

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most common inherited X-linked genetic disease affecting 1 in 5000 boys, results from a dysfunctional dystrophin protein encoded by the DMD gene. Dystrophin interacts with protein complexes linking the extracellular matrix to the cytoskeleton of muscle fibers. Without dystrophin functioning properly, sarcolemmal membrane stabilization is compromised during the mechanical rigors involved with muscle contraction leading to progressive muscular dystrophy. Heregulin/neuregulin-1 (HRG), a member of the epidermal growth factor family has been shown to induce neuromuscular junction (NMJ) gene expression in vitro and improve skeletal muscle function in dystrophic mice. However, it is unclear if the HRG …

Microrna Expression Signature Of Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells Associated With The Phenotype Of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Mark Anthony Gutierrez May 2014

Microrna Expression Signature Of Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cells Associated With The Phenotype Of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Mark Anthony Gutierrez

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

Age-related macular degeneration is a debilitating condition that manifests as a loss of the central portion of an individual’s field of vision, affecting 1 in 3 people over the age of 80. With regards to the retina, the organ primarily responsible for an individual’s sense of vision, this condition is associated with the degeneration of the central point in the retina, known as the macula, which contains the highest concentration of light-sensitive photoreceptors. It is currently known that the human retina exhibits a gradual decrease in protective detoxifying factors such as glutathione-S-transferase-1 and catalase as well as increased lipid peroxidation, …

Evaluation Of Select Publicly Available In Silico Methods For Predicting Functional Effects Of Missense Mutations In The Galns Gene, Kathryn Davidson May 2014

Evaluation Of Select Publicly Available In Silico Methods For Predicting Functional Effects Of Missense Mutations In The Galns Gene, Kathryn Davidson

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The ability to sequence patient DNA has led to an explosion in the reports of mutations for a number of diseases. Frequently, published reports include in silico predictions of the probability that the mutations are disease-associated. The question asked here is how well these in silico methods predict the effects of new mutations, i.e., mutations not included in the dataset(s) used for training and testing the in silico method. To address this question, we examined mutations associated, or potentially associated, with Morquio A (MPS IVA), a rare, autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder (LSD) caused by a deficiency of lysosomal enzyme …

Man Games Lost In The Nhl: A Correlation Between Travel, Rest Periods And Injuries In The National Hockey League, Aaron T. Kneeland May 2014

Man Games Lost In The Nhl: A Correlation Between Travel, Rest Periods And Injuries In The National Hockey League, Aaron T. Kneeland

Sport Management Undergraduate

Each year in the National Hockey League, teams travel thousands of miles, coast to coast, to play hockey. Each year there are also hundreds of injuries, and thousands of man games lost in the league. While there has been substantial research on how travel can affect Circadian Rhythms, no research has connected this with injury in the NHL. This study used Circadian Rhythm Theory, the amount of travel miles, and back-to-back games played by teams to understand a possible correlation between travel, rest periods, and the amount of man games. After analysis, it was clear there was no consistent correlation …

Characterization Of A Putative Cephalotoxin From The Hemocytes Of Euprymna Scolopes, Jessie E. Scott May 2014

Characterization Of A Putative Cephalotoxin From The Hemocytes Of Euprymna Scolopes, Jessie E. Scott

University Scholar Projects

Many organisms have beneficial microbial symbionts, and complex interactions between the immune system and the bacteria must occur to allow these symbioses to persist. The host immune system must recognize and preferentially tolerate the beneficial microorganisms, while simultaneously eliminating harmful pathogens. The Hawaiian bobtail squid, Euprymna scolopes, is a model organism for host-microbe interactions because of the unique light organ symbiosis. Hemocytes, the squid’s primary immune cell, infiltrate and patrol the light organ and continuously interact with the symbiont Vibrio fischeri. Using this model, several innate immunity genes have been shown to be differentially expressed in the hemocytes …

Modeling The Adaptive Immune Response To Mutation-Generated Antigens, Rory J. Geyer May 2014

Modeling The Adaptive Immune Response To Mutation-Generated Antigens, Rory J. Geyer

University Scholar Projects

Somatic mutations may drive tumorigenesis or lead to new, immunogenic epitopes (neoantigens). The immune system is thought to represses neoplastic growths through the recognition of neoantigens presented only by tumor cells. To study mutations as well as the immune response to mutation-generated antigens, we have created a conditional knockin mouse line with a gene encoding, 5’ to 3’, yellow fluorescent protein (YFP), ovalbumin (which is processed to the immunologically recognizable peptide, SIINFEKL), and cyan fluorescent protein (CFP), or, YFP-ovalbumin-CFP. A frame shift mutation has been created at the 5’ end of the ovalbumin gene, hence YFP should always be expressed, …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Dyskeratosis congenita (DC) is an inherited bone marrow failure syndrome and telomere biology disorder characterized by dysplastic nails, reticular skin pigmentation and oral leucoplakia. Androgens are a standard therapeutic option for bone marrow failure in those patients with DC who are unable to undergo haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, but there are no systematic data on its use in those patients. We evaluated haematological response and side effects of androgen therapy in 16 patients with DC in our observational cohort study. Untreated DC patients served as controls. Seventy percent of treated DC patients had a haematological response with red blood cell …

Bridging The Gap: Understanding, Anticipating, And Responding To The Needs Of Student Veterans In A Bachelor Of Science In Nursing Program, Larry Michael Stowers

Doctoral Projects

The passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act (ADAAA) of 2008 and the Post-9/11 Veterans Assistance Act of 2008 have afforded veterans the opportunity to pursue post-secondary education. Since October 2001, over 2 million American men and women in uniform have deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). While thousands of returning combat veterans take advantage of recent legislation that helps pay for their education, they face new challenges in the classroom. This nation’s veterans represent a group of diverse individuals who bring different experiences, thus different perspectives than traditional college-aged students. …

Revolutionary Education: A Modern Synthesis Of John Dewey's Evolutionary Philosophy And Educational Theory, W. Jason Niedermeyer May 2014

Revolutionary Education: A Modern Synthesis Of John Dewey's Evolutionary Philosophy And Educational Theory, W. Jason Niedermeyer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

John Dewey was one of the first philosophers who intentionally used the principles of evolution to produce his perspective. He was also the foremost educational theorist of a generation. In both fields, he was a pragmatist, and he sought to lay waste to the dualisms that prevented progress. It is therefore ironic that he erected an artificial wall between the evolutionary thought that pervaded his writings on philosophy, psychology, and even art, and his works on education. I argue in this dissertation that the true power of Dewey would come through the synthesis of his evolutionary and educational thoughts. Using …

Ultrathin Ptfe Coating For Hypodermic Needles Enabled By Mussel-Inspired Pda Adhesive Layer, Spencer A. Foust May 2014

Ultrathin Ptfe Coating For Hypodermic Needles Enabled By Mussel-Inspired Pda Adhesive Layer, Spencer A. Foust

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene, commonly known by its brand name Teflon®, which has many desirable properties such as a low coefficient of friction, high temperature resistance, anti-microbial properties, hydrophobicity, biocompatibility, and chemical resistance. One of the major challenges caused by the non-stick property of PTFE is its poor adhesion to substrates: PTFE coatings can be easily detached from surfaces under frictional forces and shear. The molecule polydopamine (PDA) was discovered as the key protein for adhesion between polytetrafluoroethylene and substrates of many materials, including steel, and thus has been used as a unique approach for coatings. …

On The Relation Between Quantum Mechanical And Neo-Mechanistic Ontologies And Explanatory Strategies, Meinard Kuhlmann, Stuart Glennan May 2014

On The Relation Between Quantum Mechanical And Neo-Mechanistic Ontologies And Explanatory Strategies, Meinard Kuhlmann, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Advocates of the New Mechanicism in philosophy of science argue that scientific explanation often consists in describing mechanisms responsible for natural phenomena. Despite its successes, one might think that this approach does not square with the ontological strictures of quantum mechanics. New Mechanists suppose that mechanisms are composed of objects with definite properties, which are interconnected via local causal interactions. Quantum mechanics calls these suppositions into question. Since mechanisms are hierarchical it appears that even macroscopic mechanisms must supervene on a set of “objects” that behave non- classically. In this paper we argue, in part by appeal to the theory …

Identifying Desaparecidos: The Development Of Forensic Anthropology In Chile, Amanda M. Quinn May 2014

Identifying Desaparecidos: The Development Of Forensic Anthropology In Chile, Amanda M. Quinn

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Between 1973 and 1990, Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile implemented the systematic practice of forced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in order to eradicate the imagined “communist cancer” (Wyndham and Read 2010: 31). A total of 3,227 deaths have been tallied; 1,465 of these were cases of detenidos-desaparecidos, or enforced disappearances (Garrido and Intriago 2012: 34). Scholars suggest that Chile’s transition to democracy will remain incomplete without first locating and identifying the desaparecidos (Aguilar 2002). Through methods of comparing postmortem skeletal analysis with antemortem data, forensic anthropologists carry out the important work that makes identifications possible.

This thesis evaluates the development …

Molecular Mechanisms For Regulating The Assembly Of The Mixed Lineage Leukemia-1 (Mll1) Core Complex, Michael Hu May 2014

Molecular Mechanisms For Regulating The Assembly Of The Mixed Lineage Leukemia-1 (Mll1) Core Complex, Michael Hu

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Epigenetics is the study of heritable traits that are not caused by alterations to DNA. An example of such a mechanism is histone methylation, specifically histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4). Histones are proteins that wrap and package DNA into nucleosomes. Modifications to a histone’s chemistry can up or down regulate specific gene expression programs through changes in nucleosome positioning. Human mixed lineage leukemia protein-1 (MLL1) is a member of the SET1 family of H3K4 methyltransferases. Previous studies in the Cosgrove lab have shown that an interaction between two protein sub-complexes, MLL1 and WRAD (WDR5, RbBP5, Ash2L, DPY30), leads to dimethylation. …

The Purification And Characterization Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Trithorax Protein And Its Implications In The Studies Of The Set Domain Family Of Proteins, Kelsey Monteith May 2014

The Purification And Characterization Of The Drosophila Melanogaster Trithorax Protein And Its Implications In The Studies Of The Set Domain Family Of Proteins, Kelsey Monteith

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Methylation at histone H3 lysine 4 (H3K4) is a post-translational modification often associated with transcriptional regulation through altering the structural state of chromatin. The human mixed lineage leukemia protein-1 protein (MLL1) is a known histone methyltransferase that catalyzes the transfer of methyl groups to H3K4. MLL1 works in a core complex with other essential components, proteins WDR5, RbBP5, Ash2L, DPY-30 (WRAD), which is required for H3K4 dimethylation. Trithorax (TRX) protein is the Drosophila melanogaster ortholog to human MLL1, and although structurally similar is unable to perform dimethylation when in complex with the human components. The goal of this study is …

Mimicking Early Stages Of Diagenesis In Modern Metasequoia Leaves Implications For Plant Fossil Lagerstätten, Caitlyn Witkowski May 2014

Mimicking Early Stages Of Diagenesis In Modern Metasequoia Leaves Implications For Plant Fossil Lagerstätten, Caitlyn Witkowski

Master of Science in Global Environmental Studies

Remarkably well-preserved plants from rich fossil deposits (known as lagerstätten) provide insights into paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions. However, it is difficult to distinguish whether proxy signals from fossil lagerstätten represent original environmental information or modified data due to degradation. To better understand molecular and morphological changes of plant leaves over time, modern Metasequoia, a well-studied “living fossil,” was degraded to mimic early stages of diagenesis and then compared with its ancient counterpart. Two sample series were used: 1) a laboratory decay experiment with samples in a closed, controlled environment and 2) a natural decay experiment with samples collected …

Corrosion Assessment And Enhanced Biocompatibility Analysis Of Biodegradable Magnesium-Based Alloys, Luis Enrique Pompa May 2014

Corrosion Assessment And Enhanced Biocompatibility Analysis Of Biodegradable Magnesium-Based Alloys, Luis Enrique Pompa

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Magnesium alloys have raised immense interest to many researchers because of its evolution as a new third generation material. Due to their biocompatibility, density, and mechanical properties, magnesium alloys are frequently reported as prospective biodegradable implant materials. Moreover, magnesium based alloys experience a natural phenomena to biodegrade in aqueous solutions due to its corrosive activity, which is excellent for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. However, major concerns with such alloys are fast and non-uniform corrosion degradation. Controlling the degradation rate in the physiological environment determines the success of an implant. In this investigation, three grades of magnesium alloys: AZ31B, AZ91E and …

Restoring Aspen in Rocky Mountain National Park

Therese Johnson

In 2008, when Rocky Mountain National Park’s Elk and Vegetation Management Plan (EVMP) was approved, aspen stands on primary elk range had not recruited new tree-sized stems for at least 35 years as a result of heavy elk browsing. Research showed that the distribution and abundance of aspen in the park declined during the 20th century, and modeling indicated that a continuation of high elk densities could result in the complete loss of aspen clones in high elk use areas. Aspen are rare in the park, but are important because they …
