Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson May 2014

Evidence That Bdnf Regulates Heart Rate By A Mechanism Involving Increased Brainstem Parasympathetic Neuron Excitability, Ruqian Wan, Letitia A. Weigand, Ryan Bateman, Kathleen Griffioen, David Mendelowitz, Mark P. Mattson

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

Autonomic control of heart rate is mediated by cardioinhibitory parasympathetic cholinergic neurons located in the brainstem and stimulatory sympathetic noradrenergic neurons. During embryonic development the survival and cholinergic phenotype of brainstem autonomic neurons is promoted by brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). We now provide evidence that BDNF regulates heart rate by a mechanism involving increased brainstem cardioinhibitory parasympathetic activity. Mice with a BDNF haploinsufficiency exhibit elevated resting heart rate, and infusion of BDNF intracerebroventricularly reduces heart rate in both wild-type and BDNF+/− mice. The atropine-induced elevation of heart rate is diminished in BDNF+/− mice and is restored by BDNF infusion, whereas …

Paying For Prescribed Drugs In Medicaid: Current Policy And Upcoming Changes, Brian K. Bruen, Katherine Young May 2014

Paying For Prescribed Drugs In Medicaid: Current Policy And Upcoming Changes, Brian K. Bruen, Katherine Young

Health Policy and Management Issue Briefs

Since the early 2000s, state Medicaid programs have made concerted efforts to control the cost of prescription drug spending. One crucial aspect in doing so is using a pharmacy reimbursement methodology that best reflects actual drug costs. Currently, states set pharmacy reimbursement policy within broad federal guidelines, resulting in a complex mix of reimbursement rules. Many states use list prices to set reimbursement levels, and these list prices increasingly have been criticized as not accurately reflecting the cost of the drug. Specifically, there are concerns that some benchmarks lead to inflated reimbursement levels. As a result, the federal government has …

Manganese-Containing Prussian Blue Nanoparticles For Imaging Of Pediatric Brain Tumors, Matthieu F. Dumont, Sridevi Yadavilli, Raymond Sze, Javad Nazarian, Rohan Fernandes

Radiology Faculty Publications

Pediatric brain tumors (PBTs) are a leading cause of death in children. For an improved prognosis in patients with PBTs, there is a critical need to develop molecularly-specific imaging agents to monitor disease progression and response to treatment. In this paper, we describe manganese-containing Prussian blue nanoparticles as agents for molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and fluorescence-based imaging of PBTs. Our core-shell nanoparticles consist of a core lattice structure that incorporates and retains paramagnetic Mn2+ ions, and generates MRI contrast (both negative and positive). The biofunctionalized shell is comprised of fluorescent avidin, which serves the dual purpose of enabling …

Investigating The Dynamics Of Bystander Behavior In Child Sexual Abuse Incidents, Charles Leonard May 2014

Investigating The Dynamics Of Bystander Behavior In Child Sexual Abuse Incidents, Charles Leonard

Master’s Theses and Projects

It is well known that child sexual abuse is a long standing problem in society. Much has been researched concerning the pedophile and other child molesters who choose to sexually exploit minors. Too often the victims of these crimes have been abused over a protracted period—sometimes years. Even more disturbing is the discovery that the abuse was noticed, even witnessed by others who choose not to intervene. Many people have looked the other way, denied what has occurred, or simply refused to become involved in stopping child molesters. This exploratory research examines what bystanders choose to do once they recognize …

Validation Of Satellite Rainfall Products For Western Uganda., Jeremy E. Diem, Joel N. Hartter, Sadie J. Ryan, Michael W. Palace

Geography

Central equatorial Africa is deficient in long-term, ground-based measurements of rainfall; therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of three high-resolution, satellite-based rainfall products in western Uganda for the 2001–10 period. The three products are African Rainfall Climatology, version 2 (ARC2); African Rainfall Estimation Algorithm, version 2 (RFE2); and 3B42 from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, version 7 (i.e., 3B42v7). Daily rainfall totals from six gauges were used to assess the accuracy of satellite-based rainfall estimates of rainfall days, daily rainfall totals, 10-day rainfall totals, monthly rainfall totals, and seasonal rainfall totals. The northern stations had …

The Nsf/Nih Effect: Surveying The Effect Of Data Management Requirements On Faculty, Sponsored Programs, And Institutional Repositories, Anne Diekema, Andrew Wesolek, Cheryl D. Walters

Publications

The scholarly communication landscape is rapidly changing and nowhere is this more evident than in the field of data management. Mandates by major funding agencies, further expanded by executive order and pending legislation in 2013, require many research grant applicants to provide data management plans for preserving and making their research data openly available. However, do faculty researchers have the requisite skill sets and are their institutions providing the necessary infrastructure to comply with these mandates? To answer these questions, three groups were surveyed in 2012: research and teaching faculty, sponsored programs office staff, and institutional repository librarians. Survey results …

Likelihood Ratio Type Test For Linear Failure Rate Distribution Vs. Exponential Distribution, R R. L. Kantam, M C. Priya, M S. Ravikumar May 2014

Likelihood Ratio Type Test For Linear Failure Rate Distribution Vs. Exponential Distribution, R R. L. Kantam, M C. Priya, M S. Ravikumar

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Linear Failure Rate Distribution (LFRD) is considered. The graphs of its probability density function are examined for selected parameter combinations. Some of them are similar to the well-known exponential distribution. Incidentally exponential distribution is one of the two component models of the LFRD model. In view of the simpler form of exponential model as applicable in inference, looking at the frequency curves of LFRD, a test statistic is proposed based on ratio of likelihood functions containing the standard forms of the density functions of both LFRD and Exponential to discriminate between LFRD and exponential models. The critical values and …

Stability Analysis Of A Fractional-Order Differential Equation System Of A Gbm-Is Interaction Depending On The Density, Fatma Bozkurt May 2014

Stability Analysis Of A Fractional-Order Differential Equation System Of A Gbm-Is Interaction Depending On The Density, Fatma Bozkurt

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, fractional-order is introduced into the interaction model between GBM and IS. GBM (Glioblastoma Multiforme) is a brain tumor, that has a monoclonal origin and produces after reaching a specific density another tumor with different growth rate and treatment susceptibilities. The IS cells are also divided into two populations, namely, the macrophages and the activated macrophages. Hence, this model show two conversions, the conversion from sensitive tumor cell to resistant tumor cell and the conversion from macrophages to active macrophages, and an interaction between the tumor cell and the macrophages. In this work, it is shown that the …

Numerical Simulation For The Fractional Sirc Model And Influenza A, M. M. Khader, N. H. Sweilam, A. M. S. Mahdy, N. K. Abdel Moniem

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this paper, A Chebyshev spectral method is presented to study the deals with the fractional SIRC model associated with the evolution of influenza A disease in human population. The properties of the Chebyshev polynomials are used to derive an approximate formula of the Caputo fractional derivative. This formula reduces the SIRC model to the solution of a system of algebraic equations which is solved using Newton iteration method. The convergence analysis and an upper bound of the error of the derived formula are given. We compared our numerical solutions with those numerical solutions using fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The obtained …

Mathematical Modeling Towards The Dynamical Interaction Of Leptospirosis, Muhammad Altaf Khan, Saeed Islam, Sher Afzal Khan May 2014

Mathematical Modeling Towards The Dynamical Interaction Of Leptospirosis, Muhammad Altaf Khan, Saeed Islam, Sher Afzal Khan

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

In this work, we extend the mathematical model of leptospirosis disease by taking into account the exposed individuals, the related death rate and the transmission coefficients between susceptible human and infected vector. Initially, we present the local asymptotical stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibrium. We use the Lyapunov function theory with some sufficient conditions. This shows the global stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibrium. Further, we present the bifurcation of the model and exhibit that the local asymptotical stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibrium co-exists with the threshold quantity. Finally, we discuss the numerical results.

Incomplete Variable Multigranulation Rough Sets Decision, Ming Zhang, Weiyan Xu, Xibei Yang, Zhenmin Tang

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Recently, a multigranulation rough set (MGRS) has become a new direction in rough set theory, which is different from the Pawlake’s rough set since the former takes multiple granulations on the universe into account. In this paper, by analyzing the limitations of optimistic multigranulation rough set (OMGRS) and pessimistic multigranulation rough set (PMGRS) in incomplete information system, the incomplete variable multigranulation rough set (VMGRS) is proposed, and the relationships among VMGRS, OMGRS and PMGRS are deeply explored, From the properties, it can be found that OMGRS and PMGRS are the special cases compared to our VMGRS. Furthermore, several important measurements …

An Approach For Fuzzy Modeling Based On Self-Organizing Feature Maps Neural Network, Ching-Yi Chen, Jen-Shiun Chiang, Kuang-Yuan Chen, Ta-Kang Liu, Ching-Chang Wong

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Exploration of large and high-dimensional data sets is one of the main problems in data analysis. Self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) is a powerful technique for clustering analysis and data mining. Competitive learning in the SOFM training process focuses on finding a neuron that its weight vector is most similar to that of an input vector. SOFM can be used to map large data sets to a simpler, usually one or two-dimensional topological structure. In this paper, we present a new approach to acquisition of initial fuzzy rules using SOFM learning algorithm, not only for its vector feature, but also for …

The image of God has carried with it a special designation for humanity within the panoply of life on earth. This project attempts to reorient and expand theological anthropology to include the ecological dimension in Christian perspective to cultivate an understanding of the ecological self. This project will place traditional interpretations of what it means to be human into conversation with twentieth-century ecological philosophies and Native American spirituality in order to broaden the Christian imagination for understanding ourselves within creation. Vine Deloria’s analyses of Western temporal thinking and spatial thinking demonstrated by Native worldviews provides perspective for necessary theological shifts …

The "Constitution In Exile" As A Problem For Legal Theory, Stephen E. Sachs May 2014

The "Constitution In Exile" As A Problem For Legal Theory, Stephen E. Sachs

Notre Dame Law Review

How does one defend a constitutional theory that’s out of the mainstream? Critics of originalism, for example, have described it as a nefarious “Constitution in Exile,” a plot to impose abandoned rules on the unsuspecting public. This framing is largely mythical, but it raises a serious objection. If a theory asks us to change our legal practices, leaving important questions to academics or historians, how can it be a theory of our law? If law is a matter of social convention, how can there be conventions that hardly anybody knows about? How is a constitution in exile even possible?

This …

Physical Activity And Nutritional Behavior Of Overweight College Students Trying To Lose Weight 2014, Santino Vallejos M.S. May 2014

Physical Activity And Nutritional Behavior Of Overweight College Students Trying To Lose Weight 2014, Santino Vallejos M.S.

Master's Theses

Although there are numerous benefits to increased physical activity and proper dietary behaviors, the decreased participation in physical activity and poor dietary behaviors has emerged as a significant problem within the college student population. The focus of this research study was to identify the relationship between physical activity and dietary behavior to weight loss behaviors within an undergraduate student sample of a small, comprehensive northeastern university. College-aged students (age range: 17 to 27 years old) completed the American College Health Association’s (ACHA) National College Health Assessment II (NCHA) during the years 2009 and 2012. According to the results, there were …

"I'M More Than The Sum Of My Parts": Multiracial Identities And The Creation Of Racial Meaning, Hannah D. Johnson May 2014

"I'M More Than The Sum Of My Parts": Multiracial Identities And The Creation Of Racial Meaning, Hannah D. Johnson

Sociology Honors Projects

This paper examines the ways that multiracial individuals understand and give meaning to their identities. Specifically, how do we—as a culture and as individuals—conceptualize and construct multiracial identities? What is the relationship between the way people identify themselves and the way they are identified by others? What do people mean when they say they are mixed race? Through a series of in-depth interviews with 11 individuals who self-identify as multiracial or mixed race, I find that racial identities are fundamentally multifaceted; they can be asserted by an individual, ascribed by an outsider, deeply rooted in culture and heritage, employed as …

The Role Of Exchange Ideology In Coworker Social Support And Work Engagement, Sharon Sawyer Cureton May 2014

The Role Of Exchange Ideology In Coworker Social Support And Work Engagement, Sharon Sawyer Cureton

Dissertations

Despite spending over $720 million annually on engagement improvement efforts, companies continue to lose over $600 billion to a stressed and disengaged workforce (Coffman & Gonzalez-Molina, 2002; ComPsych, 2010; Hollon, 2012). Research confirms the role of coworker social support as a job resource capable of impacting engagement (May, Gilson, & Harter, 2004; Richardsen, Burke, & Martinussen, 2006; Schaufeli & Bakker, 2004). Previous engagement studies have emphasized the supervisory and employee relationship with limited consideration of relationships between peer employees and the subsequent effects of that relationship on engagement. While exchange ideology has been offered as a possible reason individuals choose …

Running The Boys' Club: An Examination Of The Experiences Of Female Law Enforcement Leaders, Jennifer Lynn Taylor May 2014

Running The Boys' Club: An Examination Of The Experiences Of Female Law Enforcement Leaders, Jennifer Lynn Taylor

Dissertations

After struggling for decades for an equal status, it appears that female law enforcement officers in general have overcome the obstacles that initially kept them away from the job. Now, it is not uncommon to see a woman working as a patrol officer or criminal investigator. It took a shift in attitude over time and government intervention for this evolution to occur. Male officers were resistant, because the presence of women was considered a threat to their boys’ club that they so cherished. But, eventually, they have come to accept the role of women in policing.

Unfortunately, another dilemma surfaced …
