Motivations For Targeted School Violence: Examining The Influence Of Social Rejection And Violent Video Games On Aggression, Maxwell R. Christensen
Motivations For Targeted School Violence: Examining The Influence Of Social Rejection And Violent Video Games On Aggression, Maxwell R. Christensen
Honors Scholar Theses
This Thesis Project investigates putative causes for mass-casualty violence in America’s schools. Both popular and scientific literatures suggest a variety of factors to explain these events, including violence in media such as movies and video games, gun culture, social constructions of masculinity, as well as social isolation, rejection, and disaffection among youth. Whereas such factors are not present in every incidence of mass violence and have yet to be demonstrated as explicitly causal variables, significant evidence points to social rejection in the form of bullying experiences and consumption of violent media such as first-person-shooter video games as representing key driving …
Can Childhood Animal Cruelty Be Learned?: Examining Age Of Onset And Recurrency, John A. Browne
Can Childhood Animal Cruelty Be Learned?: Examining Age Of Onset And Recurrency, John A. Browne
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Few studies have examined how animal cruelty can be a learned behavior. Using data collected from 257 male inmates at a Southern state medium-security prison, the current study seeks to replicate the Hensley, Tallichet and Dutkiewicz (2012) study. It examines the potential for the onset and recurrence of childhood animal cruelty to become a learned behavior, specifically in terms of how demographic characteristics and childhood experiences, such as witnessing animal cruelty and being mentally and/or physically abused, influence such behavior. In the current study, those who were physically abused as children reported engaging in recurrent animal cruelty. Those who reported …
Examining The Effects Of Demographic And Situational Factors On Childhood Animal Cruelty Methods, Mackenzie Grimes
Examining The Effects Of Demographic And Situational Factors On Childhood Animal Cruelty Methods, Mackenzie Grimes
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The current study seeks to replicate Hensley, Tallichet, and Dutkiewicz’s (2012) research on childhood animal cruelty methods by surveying 257 inmates in a medium-security Southern prison. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between participants’ demographic and situational factors and their individual methods of childhood animal cruelty. The study also investigated the predictive value of childhood animal cruelty methods on adult recurrent violent crimes. Logistic regression revealed that those who were younger when they first engaged in animal cruelty were more likely to drown, kick, burn, stab, and have sex with animals. Inmates who were not upset …
Environmental Determinism And The Existence Of Citizen Oversight Of The Police, Neal C. Baldwin
Environmental Determinism And The Existence Of Citizen Oversight Of The Police, Neal C. Baldwin
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Developments in citizen oversight of the police have not gone unnoticed by policing scholars. Though the concept has been controversial and heavily debated, noticeable increases in these mechanisms are evident on both national and international levels, especially in the most populated metropolitan areas in the United States. There is, however, a research gap in that available scholarly inquiries have not empirically examined the existence of citizen oversight within an explanatory framework, cognizant of plausible theoretical assumptions. This research examines the existence of citizen oversight of the police in the 100 largest cities/agencies. The analysis supports the contention that the presence …

Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Heavy Drinking Behaviors And Parental Influence Among Greek Affiliated College Students, Melodie Harris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heavy drinking behaviors have been observed in relation to fraternity and sorority membership. Some have argued that this relationship persists as a result of the drinking-conducive social environments of Greek organizations, but others have suggested that this relationship may be spurious. Using data from The Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study (n = 10,904) the link between Greek affiliation, alcohol consumption, and parental influence was examined through the lens of social learning theory. It was hypothesized that members of Greek organizations would report higher levels of drinking compared to others and that the inclusion of the variable of …
Immigration Control And The Punitive Turn, Eduardo Batista
Immigration Control And The Punitive Turn, Eduardo Batista
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The “punitive turn” describes the penalizing and disciplinary focus the United States has implemented in regulating problem populations since the late 1970s. This period has welcomed the era of mass incarceration in which the US penal population has exploded to levels not seen anywhere else in the world. The rise in the use of prisons and jails has been accompanied by the retrenchment of the welfare state, attacks on affirmative action policies, continued segregation in education and housing, and a growing gap between the rich and the poor. All of these have essentially erased the gains made by the Civil …
Democracy, Prison, And Public Safety Realignment: Renewing Our Imagination, Kimberly Turner
Democracy, Prison, And Public Safety Realignment: Renewing Our Imagination, Kimberly Turner
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
The American carceral condition has waged a 200-year-old struggle where the lives of the guilty, the innocent, and the victimized have taken center stage in a debate centered on rehabilitation, reformation, and revenge. The drama has undergone a number of revisions from great scholarly authors, multidisciplinary intellectuals, and literary muses. Despite a number of new renderings, the central themes of the American prison have remained constant, and just as there have been builders of prisons, there have been forces intent on their destruction. The current state of the American carceral condition has burgeoned since the neoliberal political and economic shift …
Long-Term Physical And Mental Health Effects Of Domestic Violence, Kavita Alejo
Long-Term Physical And Mental Health Effects Of Domestic Violence, Kavita Alejo
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
Domestic violence is an issue affecting people of all ages, races, genders, and sexual orientations. Violence against men and same-sex domestic violence are often considered less of a threat to society and to the people involved, but it is important to understand that male-on-female violence, female-on-male violence, and same-sex violence all involve serious consequences to the victim’s and batterer’s short- and long-term health. This paper determines whether men or women suffer from more long-term health problems caused by domestic violence by comparing the currently published statistics on the prevalence of domestic violence in heterosexual and homosexual relationships, and analyzing the …
The Lingering Killer: Agent Orange, Sharon Ungerfeld
The Lingering Killer: Agent Orange, Sharon Ungerfeld
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
This paper explores the utilization of the chemical herbicide, Agent Orange, as it was sprayed over Vietnam during the Vietnam War in 1961 to 1971. The United States government, military, and corporations acted irresponsibly by creating the chemical and spraying it as a war tactic. The outcome of the spraying includes detrimental socioeconomic impacts, environmental degradation, and health problems. The socioeconomic impact is explained with statistics and an explanation of loss of job and education capabilities. With data on the destroyed trees and vegetation, this paper demonstrates the degree to which the environment faced harm. The health effects of Agent …
Yakuza Past, Present And Future: The Changing Face Of Japan's Organized Crime Syndicates, Silke Higgins
Yakuza Past, Present And Future: The Changing Face Of Japan's Organized Crime Syndicates, Silke Higgins
Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science
While Japanese crime syndicates are deeply entrenched in the history and culture of Japan, much of what is known in the Western world about the Yakuza is primarily the result of stereotyping generated by media-driven sensationalism and lowbudget motion pictures. Judgment on the crime syndicates' continued existence, modes of operation, and relatively high visibility in Japan is oftentimes passed based on socio-cultural perceptions of deviance that differ from those in Japanese culture. Taking the form of a book review essay, this paper aims to re-introduce the reader to Japan's crime syndicates with the goal of replacing stereotypes and myths with …
Understanding The Role Of Trust In Cooperation With Natural Resources Institutions, Joseph A. Hamm
Understanding The Role Of Trust In Cooperation With Natural Resources Institutions, Joseph A. Hamm
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation investigates the role of trust in predicting cooperation with a natural resources management institution. It begins with an exploration of the legal landscape against which the relationship between land owners and natural resources management institutions is contextualized, presents a review of the often ostensibly disparate trust literature and a framework for its integration, and proposes and tests a model of trust and cooperation in the natural resources context. The results provide mixed support for the model as proposed but confirm the importance of trust in this context and suggest implications for policy, especially the potential importance of increasing …
School, Disability Status, And Delinquency: An Examination Of Delinquency Among Rural Adolescents, Miriam Yvonne Brooks
School, Disability Status, And Delinquency: An Examination Of Delinquency Among Rural Adolescents, Miriam Yvonne Brooks
Master's Theses
Extensive research has been devoted to identifying risk-factors that contribute to the onset of juvenile delinquency. Furthermore, evidence has suggested that a disproportionate number of adolescents with learning disabilities are confined in juvenile correctional facilities. Yet, there is a substantial gap in empirical research that explores the possible relationship between learning disabilities and delinquent behavior. The purpose of the current study is to assess how specific learning disabilities relate to various forms of delinquent behavior among adolescents from rural high schools in a southern state. Specifically, this study aims to assess how Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia relate to drug use, …
A Multi-Site Process Evaluation Of Three Federal Reentry Courts In A Southern District Of Federal Probation, Patricia Ann Southerland
A Multi-Site Process Evaluation Of Three Federal Reentry Courts In A Southern District Of Federal Probation, Patricia Ann Southerland
Master's Theses
Over the years, prison populations have varied extensively. For the first time in over 30 years, national prison populations began to decrease in 2010. While there are a number of factors influencing this trend, part of such decrease has been the result of changing parole practices. In attempts to respond to the growing parole population and reduce recidivism among parolees, the U.S. court system has begun implementing reentry courts. The current study sought to evaluate the implementation well as pro-active application of evidence-based practices among three reentry court program sites. Three federal reentry courts in a southern district of federal …

Federal Enforcement Of Police Reform, Stephen Rushin
Federal Enforcement Of Police Reform, Stephen Rushin
Fordham Law Review
Congress passed 42 U.S.C. § 14141 in an effort to combat police misconduct and incentivize proactive reform in local law enforcement agencies. The statute gives the U.S. Attorney General the power to initiate structural reform litigation against local police departments engaged in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional behavior. While academics initially praised the law’s passage, many have since worried that the Department of Justice (DOJ) has not effectively administered the measure. Little research has analyzed how the DOJ has used its authority to initiate structural police reform. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, I fill this gap …

Effects Of Teacher Training On Preservice Teachers' Knowledge, Personal Beliefs, And Attitudes, Sloan Smith Huckabee
All Dissertations
This study examines the effects of the NAMI Parents and Teachers as Allies training on the Mental Health Literacy, Personal Beliefs, and Stigmatizing Attitudes of preservice teachers. A researcher developed survey was administered three times to the training group prior to, immediately following, and two weeks after the training. A nonequivalent control group was administered two surveys—a preliminary measure and a follow up measure—to provide comparison data for investigating the effects of the intervention on the group of preservice teachers receiving the intervention. Results of the study indicate the Parents and Teachers as Allies training is an inexpensive, relatively short …

Conceptions Of Justice: A Sampling Of Student Perspectives, Matt Landon
Conceptions Of Justice: A Sampling Of Student Perspectives, Matt Landon
HIM 1990-2015
Although the literature in the field of criminal justice and philosophy is full of ideas of what constitutes "justice," little to nothing has been done to see where the average individual's opinion falls in relation to these ideas. This paper analyzes a cross-sectional convenience sample of students at UCF to determine their preference of six models of justice: utilitarianism, contractarianism, fairness, retributivism, moralism, and libertarianism. Correlating demographic factors are also discussed.
Zero Tolerance For Some: The Role Of Race In Zero Tolerance Exclusionary Discipline, Meghan Bejarano
Zero Tolerance For Some: The Role Of Race In Zero Tolerance Exclusionary Discipline, Meghan Bejarano
HIM 1990-2015
Within the last few decades, zero tolerance policies and exclusionary discipline have become the standard way in which schools manage student behavior. These policies, namely suspension and expulsion have been shown to have negative impacts on the lives of students who are punished with them. Educationally, the removal of students from the classroom hurts their chances of achieving academic success. Furthermore, these policies have been linked with an increase in the presence of law enforcement on school campuses, which results in the arrest of students, burdening them with expensive and serious legal battles. This research examines whether nonwhite students are …
When Women Kill, Giovanna C. Lima
When Women Kill, Giovanna C. Lima
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The media is one of the strongest influences on how society views the criminal justice system and all actors therein. This is especially true for offenders of violent crime. Notably, women who kill are rare. However, when women do murder someone, the media tends to over expose them and portray them in different ways. The current study is intended to examine how the media portrays women murderers. In particular, this research is focused on how fictional and true crime programs portray female killers. Do they portray them in a positive or negative light? Do they portray them realistically? Are true …
The Impact Of Serotonin And Dopamine On Human Aggression: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Caroline Isabelle Jalain
The Impact Of Serotonin And Dopamine On Human Aggression: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Caroline Isabelle Jalain
Master's Theses
Aggressive behaviors can have serious impacts on both the population at-large and the criminal justice system (Fish, DeBold, & Miczek, 2002); but despite these potential repercussions, no adequate treatment options have been identified to prevent (or reduce) such consequential actions. An increasing amount of research has, however, developed (over the years) in response to these treatment needs. Recently, the disciplines of neurobiology and neuropsychology have discovered specific anti-aggressive treatments. Studies on the prefrontal cortex specifically reveal that certain areas of the brain, along with an array of chemical imbalances, are related to aggressive behavior (Barrett, Edinger, & Siegel, 1990). Specifically, …
Self-Reported Psychopathology Correlates Of Homeless Youth In Utah, Kimberlee Taylor
Self-Reported Psychopathology Correlates Of Homeless Youth In Utah, Kimberlee Taylor
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Homelessness among unaccompanied youth is a unique, yet pervasive, social problem. Youth often become homeless through three central pathways: conflict with family, involvement in the foster system, and involvement in juvenile justice systems. As youth experience homelessness during important developmental period(s), vulnerability to mental illness may occur if not already present. The present study examined the type and prevalence of mental illness. Characteristics of homelessness, health and mental health service utilization, and pathways to homelessness were examined in relation to the occurrence of mental illness. Findings indicated that a variety of characteristics are associated with mental illness. Mental health service …

In the arenas of health, social scientists have learned over the past two decades that engagement in community service among adolescents often result in valuable outcomes. In other words, the persons being served are not the only ones benefiting from the experience, the providers of the service benefit as well. The purpose of this paper is to share with the legal community some of what we as social science researchers have learned from our research and also learned from the research of others in both health and education regarding benefits of community service among adolescents. We also will share with …

Experiences Of African American College Graduates, Aundria C. Green
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this study was to explore the reasons that African-American alumni from a historically Black university (HBCU) and a predominantly White university (PWI) chose to attend, remain in, and graduate from college. The central research question was how do African Americans describe their college experiences? The secondary research questions were (a) What led the participants to attend college? (b) What led the participants to persist in college? (c) What led the participants to graduate from college? and (d) How was race described by the participants? Thirty-seven African-American graduates from a historically Black university (HBCU) and a predominantly White …

Judas Kiss: How Never Ratting On Your Friends & Always Keeping Your Mouth Shut Does Not Apply To Street Snitches, Joseph John Pashea, Jr.
Theses
This thesis aims to understand the complex world of the snitch. The data for this thesis comes from interviews that were obtained by Richard Rosenfeld, Bruce A. Jacobs and Richard Wright. The data was obtained by conducting interviews with 20 active offenders, 15 males and 5 females. The interviews were conducted in an informal manner and lasted between a half-hour and an hour. The interviews were conducted on a one on one basis and offenders used nicknames instead of their real names. The findings revealed that while snitching is prevalent in African American communities many of the subjects did not …
