Exploring The Use Of The Check & Connect Program As A Behavioral Intervention For Students With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Beverly D. Waddell May 2014

Exploring The Use Of The Check & Connect Program As A Behavioral Intervention For Students With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Beverly D. Waddell

Specialist in Education Degree (Ed.S.) Theses

Student engagement is critical to the overall academic and behavioral well-being of a child in school. When working with students who have been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), it is important for students to understand that, even though it may be more difficult for them to complete certain tasks or follow certain rules, they can be engaged and successful. Check & Connect is a research-based intervention which involves developing a strong, positive relationship between a student and a trained mentor (University of Minnesota, 2013). A single subject design using a non-concurrent multiple baseline across students’ was employed to determine …

Transatlantic Cooperation On Cyber Security: Data Privacy And Cybercrime, Allison Feikes May 2014

Transatlantic Cooperation On Cyber Security: Data Privacy And Cybercrime, Allison Feikes

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The Internet is a vital part of the global economy considering an estimated 8 trillion United States dollars flow through global e-commerce each year. However, this new, innovative tool is not only used to benefit the people; the Internet has become a place for criminal activity as well. With over one million victims of crimes globally every day, the United States works closely with the EU to ally against this Lernaean Hydra. This thesis explores how Transatlantic cooperation can be improved through formalized regulation especially in regards to organized research in tracking child exploitation, Safe Harbor Privacy Principles, and reducing …

Leadership And Communication As Opportunities For Growth: Refining Discipline With Cross Cultural Relationships Beyond The Classroom, Sabrina D. Sanchez May 2014

Leadership And Communication As Opportunities For Growth: Refining Discipline With Cross Cultural Relationships Beyond The Classroom, Sabrina D. Sanchez

Master's Projects and Capstones

Overt disciplinary tactics disproportionately affect scholars of color. This field project aims to shed light on discipline policies across a variety of learning environments and provide scholars of color with the opportunity to self-advocate. I utilize a culturally relevant pedagogy in my framework component to stress the need for reciprocal relationships based on dignity and mutual respect. I provide effective alternative strategies, framed by culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) and Gregory and Mosely’s theory of culturally relevant discipline (CRD), for addressing misconduct that emphasize stronger communication and greater leadership opportunities. My project consists of three parts: a modified communications policy in …

Restorative Justice As An Alternative To Criminalization?, James Ptacek

NSF-NIJ IPV Prevention Workshop

This paper will review the evaluation research on restorative justice (RJ) in cases of intimate partner violence. What do we know about how well RJ ensures the safety and immediate needs of survivors? What do we know about how well survivors feel a sense of justice as a result of these practices? What do we know about the ability of these practices to hold offenders accountable, and to prevent further offending?

Fascinating Legal Questions Posed In Recent Criminal Law Cases, Marc D. Falkoff May 2014

Fascinating Legal Questions Posed In Recent Criminal Law Cases, Marc D. Falkoff

College of Law Faculty Publications

Each month, as I prepare to draft this column, I place new judicial opinions from the Illinois criminal courts into a file folder. I also add newspaper clips covering all sorts of crime-related topics, from flawed police procedures, to unusual charging decisions, to strange defense strategies, to unlikely convictions and exonerations. At the end of the month, the folder is an olio of criminal-law topics. But there’s always a common thread running through the pieces. On first reading, each item seems counterintuitive or misguided in some way. It leaves me scratching my head and wanting to figure out the unexamined …

Implicit Prejudice And Its Implications For How Communities Should Respond To Racial Injustices, Harry Kainen May 2014

Implicit Prejudice And Its Implications For How Communities Should Respond To Racial Injustices, Harry Kainen

Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted

In the spring of 2013, a racially controversial incident occurred on the Washington University Campus. The incident raised questions about the racial tolerance of the university community as well as exactly who should be held responsible for the injustice. Most importantly, the community’s response to the incident exemplified how a community with the potential for substantial collective action can fail to mobilize and improve when they are called upon to do so. This paper examines recent psychological research that studies the existence of subconscious racial prejudices in order to examine its implications in community responses to racial injustices. Results show …

Redemption Or Condemnation? A Long-Term Follow-Up Of The Desistance Patterns Of Sex Offenders, Kimberly Raye Kras May 2014

Redemption Or Condemnation? A Long-Term Follow-Up Of The Desistance Patterns Of Sex Offenders, Kimberly Raye Kras

Dissertations

Desistance is one of most important topics in criminology. Why some offenders stop offending and why others continue has been long been a question with far-reaching theoretical and empirical implications. Despite the extensive literature on desistance, most of the research examines offenders as a single group, an approach which might overlook differences between individuals by offense type. One offender group that has not been investigated in depth is sex offenders. Sex offenders are an important group to study because they present concerns to public safety and are the subject of much legislation and criminal justice policy. A substantial amount of …

Bad Laws Or Bad Attitudes? Assessing The Impact Of Societal Attitudes Upon The Conviction Rate For Rape In Ireland, Susan Leahy May 2014

Bad Laws Or Bad Attitudes? Assessing The Impact Of Societal Attitudes Upon The Conviction Rate For Rape In Ireland, Susan Leahy

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The low conviction rate for rape is often highlighted as a cause for concern. The typical response is to call for reform of Irish rape law. Although reform is necessary, this article argues that the low conviction rate for rape is caused not simply by ‘bad’ or inadequate laws but also by ‘bad’ or prejudicial attitudes about rape which persist in Irish society. These attitudes are at odds with the reality of rape and therefore create unrealistic expectations as to what, for example, constitutes a ‘real rape’ or a ‘real victim’. Jurors who are influenced by these attitudes are likely …

No Place For Children: A Case For The Abolition Of Child Imprisonment In England And Wales, Paul Gavin May 2014

No Place For Children: A Case For The Abolition Of Child Imprisonment In England And Wales, Paul Gavin

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper provides an argument for the abolition of child imprisonment in England and Wales. England and Wales is not Ireland, but the cultural and social similarities suggest that children face a great deal of the same pressures, difficulties, trials and tribulations regardless of which side of the Irish Sea they live on. Therefore, it may provide a useful analogy for Irish policy makers. The paper argues that the incarceration of children has a wide range of negative effects on children and is provided at an excessive cost to the exchequer. Restorative justice is put forward as a viable alternative …

Placing The Promotion Of Health And Well Being On The Irish Prison Agenda - The Complexity Of Health Promotion In Irish Prisons, Catherine Macnamara, Patricia Mannix-Mcnamara May 2014

Placing The Promotion Of Health And Well Being On The Irish Prison Agenda - The Complexity Of Health Promotion In Irish Prisons, Catherine Macnamara, Patricia Mannix-Mcnamara

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The prison population experiences significant health inequality and social exclusion (Department of Health 2002). Once incarcerated, prisoners are at increased risk of mental illness and have higher exposure to communicable diseases (WHO 2008). Prisoners generally have poorer health because imprisonment negatively impacts upon the health of the individual (WHO 2008). However, the prison setting offers a unique opportunity to implement targeted health promotion initiatives with a population that may have had very limited experience of accessing health services prior to incarceration. The World Health Organisation recognises the need for health promotion in prisons. This is evidenced in the Health in …

Suppressing My Inner Caravaggio, Nathan A. Childs May 2014

Suppressing My Inner Caravaggio, Nathan A. Childs

Graduate School of Art Theses

FULK ART is a body of work that stems out of the divisions and segments of the constructed narrative germane to the notions of "art world" and "art worlds". In his theses Nathan Childs argues that his contemporary studio practice is not rooted in the post production criticism of his objects. Rather his art is a "techne" that hybridizes his daily habits as rituals of making. These rituals are self reverent inspections of multi sided issues, set into a dynamic state. The "third side" of the coin device is a habit of life style that allows Childs to reach deeper …

The Effect Of Social Problem Solving Skills In The Relationship Between Traumatic Stress And Moral Disengagement Among Inner-City African American High School Students, Kendell L. Coker, Uduakobong N. Ikpe, Jeannie S. Brooks, Brian Page, Mark B. Sobell May 2014

The Effect Of Social Problem Solving Skills In The Relationship Between Traumatic Stress And Moral Disengagement Among Inner-City African American High School Students, Kendell L. Coker, Uduakobong N. Ikpe, Jeannie S. Brooks, Brian Page, Mark B. Sobell

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study examined the relationship between traumatic stress, social problem solving, and moral disengagement among African American inner-city high school students. Participants consisted of 45 (25 males and 20 females) African American students enrolled in grades 10 through 12. Mediation was assessed by testing for the indirect effect using the confidence interval derived from 10,000 bootstrapped resamples. The results revealed that social problem-solving skills have an indirect effect on the relationship between traumatic stress and moral disengagement. The findings suggest that African American youth that are negatively impacted by trauma evidence deficits in their social problem solving skills and are …

Generation Peace: Peace Education To Unify A Globalized Society, Jocelyn Coombs

Honors Program Theses and Projects

The purpose of this study is to discuss how Peace Education may build on the objectives of Global and Diversity Education, and how it may enhance these objectives in higher education. Through a qualitative study of survey data and analysis of curriculum and diversity programs at Bridgewater State University, I examine connections between the diversity-oriented campus environment and student attitudes towards diversity. I use responses from a fifty-question survey distributed to over 300 students at BSU to analyze student attitudes towards diversity, individualism, and political engagement. While students enjoy meeting people from diverse backgrounds, a significant percent of respondents do …

Chain Of Command: The Barriers Of Reporting Sexual Assault In The Military, Danielle Christenson May 2014

Chain Of Command: The Barriers Of Reporting Sexual Assault In The Military, Danielle Christenson

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Reported rates of sexual assault in the military have increased dramatically over the past 10 years (Groves, 2013). One reason for the pervasiveness of sexual assault is the reporting structure. Despite changes in the way sexual assault complaints are handled, there continue to be numerous sexual assault scandals (Childress, 2013). The purpose of this study is to examine how the military’s chain of command influences the reporting procedures, and how this may influence the military’s ability to prevent sexual assaults. This thesis examines three case studies specifically focusing on military sexual assault reporting.
