An Audience Interpretation Of Professional Athlete Self-Presentation On Twitter, Katie Lebel, Karen Danylchuk
An Audience Interpretation Of Professional Athlete Self-Presentation On Twitter, Katie Lebel, Karen Danylchuk
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This study explored how sport consumers interpret athlete self-presentation on Twitter and distinguished the perceived importance of digital self-presentation on athlete image. A self-administered online survey based on Goffman’s (1959) theoretical framework of self-presentation was created to measure audience interest in the digital presentation strategies used by athletes. A definition and specific example were provided for 10 self-presentation strategies, after which participants were asked to rate their level of interest ( N = 377). The most salient strategy reported was that of the sport insider. Participants reported greatest interest in the discussion of athlete performance, athlete fitness, and an athlete’s …

Journal of Applied Sport Management
The purpose of this study was an in-depth examination of the use of organizational values in the management practices of a nonprofit sport organization. Using a case study approach, interview (n = 13) and video (n = 5) data were examined to determine (1) the nature of employee involvement as it relates to the development of organizational values, (2) the process of enacting and communicating organizational values, and (3) the perceived link between the deliberate implementation of management by values and organizational performance within one national sport organization. Findings demonstrated the need for all employees and internal stakeholders to be …

Investigating Personal Fitness Trainers' Qualifications, Michael Akerson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A threefold approach was utilized to analyze the problem of defining personal fitness trainers’ qualifications. First, the problem was explored nationally, internationally and locally. Within the local context, the history of the exercise science program, stakeholders and culture at the University of Central Florida and in the central Florida marketplace was examined. Next, a systematic literature review examined possible causes within the knowledge context, learning/motivational context and organizational/cultural context. Then, an original research study investigated the qualifications for Central Florida, Personal Fitness Trainers (PFTs) by examining the relationship(s) and/or differences between variables such as education, certification, years of experience and …

Board Governance Of World-Class Annual Sport Championships: Learning From Kentucky To Create Tourism Opportunities In The Bahamas, Elvis V. Burrows
Board Governance Of World-Class Annual Sport Championships: Learning From Kentucky To Create Tourism Opportunities In The Bahamas, Elvis V. Burrows
Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management
The economy of The Bahamas relies heavily on leisure visitor tourism (cruise ships, resorts, holiday trips) which leaves the country vulnerable to changes in visitor travel habits. Because the country is so reliant on investments in resorts, casinos and cruise ships, it leaves a wide capacity of other touristic opportunities. One opportunity is sports tourism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategic board capability of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event’s (RK3DE) board governance using the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model as the theoretical construct and make recommendations regarding the application of these successful aspects to the …

Information, Prediction Markets, And Ncaa Basketball Attendance: The Big East Conference, Rodney J. Paul, Andrew P. Weinbach, Jonathan C. Plaut
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
In recent years, the introduction and investigation of prediction markets and their uses has become very popular in the economics and finance literature. One place where the use of sports prediction markets, more commonly thought of as betting markets, is quite helpful is in exploring the validity of the uncertainty of outcome hypothesis. The uncertainty of outcome hypothesis states that fans prefer to watch games where the expected outcome of the game is close. We test this hypothesis for Big East college basketball, using betting market prices, and find support for this hypothesis in this market. In addition, expected scoring, …

Prevalence And Incidence Rates Are Not The Same: Letter To The Editor, Yuri Feito
Faculty Articles
I recently became aware of an article by Weisenthal et al,2 “Injury Rate and Patterns Among CrossFit Athletes,” published in the April 2014 issue of your journal. Considering this is a topic of interest to me, I read the article with great expectations and detail. I commend the authors for their fantastic job, both in their methodology as well as in their interpretation of their findings. They truly did a great job explaining their definition of what constituted an injury, which has been lacking in several studies, as well as providing great recommendations for the “safe” participation in this …
An Analysis Of A University Reclassification Effect On Applications Following A Move To A New Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Dylan P. Williams
An Analysis Of A University Reclassification Effect On Applications Following A Move To A New Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Dylan P. Williams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Scholars have argued that athletics are utilized by universities to advertise their school to all individuals (Collins, 2012; Dwyer, Eddy, Havard, & Braa, 2010; Toma & Cross, 1998; Washington & Ventresca, 2004; Weaver, 2010). Expectedly, university officials are willing to contribute resources in order to develop an effective athletics program to establish an institution’s legitimacy among other universities (Collins, 2012; Toma & Cross, 1998; Washington & Ventresca, 2004). One tactic employed by schools focuses on the process of athletic association reclassification into the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) from other member associations (e.g., National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics). Officials consider …

Parental Involvement In The College-Going Process: A Q Methodology Study, Glori White Peters
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study explored parent perspectives about their participation in a federal TRIO pre-college program. Specifically, parents were asked to identify the program elements that encouraged and supported their participation in the college-going process of their child in a TRIO pre-college program. Forty parents of low-income, first generation TRIO students were purposefully selected for this study because they had participated in the parent component and because their child had enrolled in college within a year of high school graduation.
Q methodology was used for this study because it is designed to address the subjective first person viewpoint. In this Q study, …

Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were utilized to estimate the measurement model and the hypotheses. The SEM revealed that ticket services, venue services, and venue …

Framebuilder Entrepreneurship, Joshua Shuart
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
The handmade bicycle industry has grown exponentially over the past decade. Although existing for decades in much smaller numbers, the popularity and credibility of framebuilder entrepreneurship —custom, handmade bike frames—has increased significantly in the past 10 years. The companies that specialize in custom-producing bicycle frames vary in size, scope, reputation, profitability, and even building materials.
