Reinsurance As Governance: Governmental Risk Management Pools As A Case Study In The Governance Role Played By Reinsurance Institutions, Marcos Antonio Mendoza

Connecticut Insurance Law Journal

Scholars have eloquently detailed the “Insurance as Governance” concept, the potential capacity for reinsurer regulatory influence on insurers, and the many aspects under which these theories may arise. This Article takes the next step in analyzing the complex reinsurer-insurer relationship through empirical research into how carriers are actually influenced by reinsurers, and what effect this has on the parties. As a case study in the governance role played by reinsurance institutions, this Article organizes survey interview responses of senior officials in the governmental entity self-insured risk management pool sector into four distinct discussion areas: (i) how reinsurers influence pools in …

The Impact Of Education On Obesity Among Blacks And Whites Living In New York City, Chelsea Andrea Doub

Public Health Theses

This analysis examines the role of both race and ethnicity in obesity among residents of New York City. An increase in educational attainment is typically associated with lower Body Mass Index (BMI). The primary research question looks at whether the protective effect of education on obesity is equivalent among Blacks and Whites living in New York City. Predicted probabilities of the rate changes across educational gradients and race/ethnic groups were calculated using data from the 2012 Community Health Survey, a telephone survey conducted annually by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Logistic regression and predicted …

Between Saviors And Savages: The Effect Of Turkey's Revised Penal Code On The Transformation Of Honor Killings Into Honor Suicides And Why Community Discourse Is Necessary For Honor Crime Education, Bethany A. Corbin Jan 2014

Between Saviors And Savages: The Effect Of Turkey's Revised Penal Code On The Transformation Of Honor Killings Into Honor Suicides And Why Community Discourse Is Necessary For Honor Crime Education, Bethany A. Corbin

Emory International Law Review

Honor killings and honor suicides are culturally motivated causes of deaths of women in Turkey. These honor crimes occur after a family member violates a social or moral norm, such as premarital relationship, that brings shame and dishonor to the family. Both the Turkish media and general scholarship on honor killings argue that due to the revised Turkish Penal Code of 2004, which increased sentences for honor killing perpetrators and their family members, families have shifted from honor killings to honor suicides, encouraging the females to take their own lives as to minimize the penalization. This article seeks to rebut …

Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey Jan 2014

Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, Andrea M. Grey

Theses

Andrea M. Grey’s thesis, Blanche Dubois: Feminist Forerunner, explores Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire as a proto-feminist figure. Challenging traditional interpretations of Blanche as merely fragile or delusional, Grey argues that Blanche exhibits traits of modern feminism, advocating for female independence, financial self-sufficiency, and resistance to patriarchal oppression.

Blanche’s education, career as a teacher, and efforts to manage her family’s estate position her as an independent woman in a male-dominated world. However, societal constraints and gendered double standards undermine her agency. Her sexual autonomy is condemned while her male counterparts’ indiscretions are ignored. Blanche’s opposition …

Antipsychotic Prescriptions For Children Aged 5 Or Younger: Do We Need Policy Oversight Standards?, Ana Lopez-De Fede, Medha Vyavaharkar, Jessica D. Bellinger Jan 2014

Antipsychotic Prescriptions For Children Aged 5 Or Younger: Do We Need Policy Oversight Standards?, Ana Lopez-De Fede, Medha Vyavaharkar, Jessica D. Bellinger

Publications

The use of antipsychotics in very young children is of concern given the lack of empirical evidence in their efficacy and long-term impact on children’s health. This study examined the prescription of antipsychotics among children aged ≤5 years enrolled in a state Medicaid program. Secondary data analysis was conducted using the Medicaid administrative data of a southeastern state. Using SAS 9.3, descriptive statistics were performed to examine socio-demographic characteristics, psychiatric diagnoses, off-label use, receipt of medications from multiple psychotropic drug classes, and receipt of non-pharmacologic psychiatric services among children aged ≤5 years who received antipsychotic prescriptions in calendar year (CY) …

The Incidental Regulation Of Policing, Seth W. Stoughton Jan 2014

The Incidental Regulation Of Policing, Seth W. Stoughton

Faculty Publications

What do the laws governing municipal annexation, collective bargaining, and race-conscious employment decisions have in common? Each plays a significant and under-appreciated role in shaping local law enforcement practices even though each, on its face, has nothing to do with policing.

This Article explores the incidental regulation of policing, illustrating the concept with examples from different areas of state and federal law. Many legal decisions happen to include police as constituents of a broader regulatory ambit, and thus are not intended to have any particular effect on the unique functions of policing. Nevertheless, these laws have profound ramifications for police …

Innovation, Imitation, And The Continued Importance Of Vintage Video Games, Brendan Gaughen Jan 2014

Innovation, Imitation, And The Continued Importance Of Vintage Video Games, Brendan Gaughen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

“Innovation, Imitation, and the Continued Importance of Video Games” frames the development of the video game industry as one defined by a dialectic of innovation and imitation between arcades and home gaming. These complexities are simplified if not completely overlooked in the numerous game compilations, emulator collections, and plug and play devices, all of which have an effect on the nostalgia of players. The industry experimented with innovations in graphics and immersive gameplay throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, at which point compilations of classic video games (generally speaking, pre-1983) started being released for home consoles and in arcades. The …

Gender Composition Of Occupations And Earnings: Why Enter A Female Dominated Occupation?, Peter G. Toumanoff, Timothy J. Keaveny Jan 2014

Gender Composition Of Occupations And Earnings: Why Enter A Female Dominated Occupation?, Peter G. Toumanoff, Timothy J. Keaveny

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Given the inverse relationship between the proportion of females employed in an occupation and earnings, why enter a female-dominated occupation? It has been argued that an individual’s total compensation from work is a combination of wage compensation plus non-pecuniary compensation associated with job characteristics, and when choosing an occupation, one selects the utility-maximizing combination of wages and job characteristics. Our findings support the theory that employee and job characteristics are rewarded differently in non-female dominated (NFD) and female dominated (FD) occupations, and that people choose occupations that reward their attributes more or penalize them less. Comparison of the variables significantly …

What If Hewlett And Packard Had Started A Band Instead?... Denton Texas' Music Scene As Economic Cluster And Its Broader Implications For The City's Economy, Michael Seman Jan 2014

What If Hewlett And Packard Had Started A Band Instead?... Denton Texas' Music Scene As Economic Cluster And Its Broader Implications For The City's Economy, Michael Seman

Planning Dissertations - Archive

A growing body of research examines the production processes, economic activity, and symbolic value of the arts in the urban economy. This research often broadly considers all arts disciplines together, masking structural and operational differences amongst them. Research detailing popular music and its relationship with the urban economy is minimal. Prior research tangentially acknowledges that local music scenes function as economic clusters, but little detailing of their dynamics as such exists. The bulk of attention is paid to how these clusters operate in the framework of the broader music industry and not how they develop or impact their surrounding urban …

Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear Jan 2014

Atatürk's Balancing Act: The Role Of Secularism In Turkey, Patrick G. Rear

Global Tides

The intersection of religion and politics in the form of a civil religion has been present since time immemorial. This paper looks specifically to the relationship between Turkey’s development of a secular civil religion after gaining independence and the advancing of women’s rights and democratic values. In examining the intersections of state and religion in a secular Islamic society, it draws parallels to the French civil religion as it came to be following the French Revolution. Though Atatürk and other secularists were strong forces in developing the civil religion, the paper also examines liberal democratic and conservative Islamic groups in …

The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher Jan 2014

The Role Of News Media Use And Demographic Characteristics In The Prediction Of Information Overload, Qihao Ji, Louisa Ha, Ulla Sypher

School of Media and Communication Faculty Publications

Drawing on the information overload theory, this study investigates how news media use relates to the probability of information overload. Our broad goal is to explore how typical media use outside the working environment impacts information overload. Through a large mail survey conducted in northwest Ohio (N = 661), the study combined resident samples and college student samples and examined several variables regarding demographic characteristics, news media use, and information searching efficiency. Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the data. Results confirmed that age, gender, income, traditional news media use, and information searching efficiency can partially predict one’s probability …

Wearing Different Hats: Micro Role Transitions In Two Contexts, Opal Man-Ching Leung Jan 2014

Wearing Different Hats: Micro Role Transitions In Two Contexts, Opal Man-Ching Leung

2014

Individuals make transitions between roles everyday as they move from home to work to other settings. This dissertation extends the work of Goffman (1959), Hall & Richer (1988), and Ashforth et al. (2000, 2001) on the topic of micro role transitions, which are the "frequent and usually recurring transitions, such as the commute between home and work" (Ashforth et al., 2000: 472). While the context of most of the research on micro role transitions has typically been focused on the work-home boundary (e.g. Rothbard et al., 2005; Nippert-Eng, 2008; Greenhaus & Powell, 2006; Hall & Richter, 1988), the three studies …

Tiny Homes In The American City, Leila Bozorg, Abbilyn Miller Jan 2014

Tiny Homes In The American City, Leila Bozorg, Abbilyn Miller

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

This article explores the idea of tiny homes in urban settings, and questions the ways in which tiny homes are both a subversive gesture that challenges existing paradigms around urban development, the home, and the family, as well as a projection of the American Dream in the urban arena. We also consider the opportunity that tiny homes present in helping to address certain challenges faced by cities, but also argue that addressing some of these challenges will require local governments to be inclusive of populations that have previously been marginalized for their attempts to live in settings that do not …

Democracy Causes Terrorism: Methodological Flaws, A New Approach, And A New Answer, Bryan Brophy-Baermann Jan 2014

Democracy Causes Terrorism: Methodological Flaws, A New Approach, And A New Answer, Bryan Brophy-Baermann

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

A critical analysis of the dominant quantitative methodologies used to analyze international terrorism reveals serious flaws in the conceptualization of key terms, the measurement of key variables and the statistical estimation of key relationships, all of which lead to unsubstantiated results. I deconstruct these issues, and extend the literature on the relationship of regime type and acts of terrorism in the following ways: I add to the quantitative literature on the subject; I use an updated database on global terrorist events (START--Global Terrorism Database) which includes domestic and international events; and I analyze rates of terrorism by a variety of …

Leading Between The Lines: Exploring The Development Of Identity Among Literacy Specialists, Peter Joseph Lancia Jan 2014

Leading Between The Lines: Exploring The Development Of Identity Among Literacy Specialists, Peter Joseph Lancia

Educational Studies Dissertations

This dissertation study addresses the phenomenon of literacy leadership through a multiple case study of four practicing veteran literacy specialists in elementary schools in different New England cities. Using qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, namely extensive interviews and the Voice Centered Relational Method, respectively, narrative portraits were created that suggest themes related to their role, preparation, and ongoing development as well as models of leadership in their schools. In addition, the portraits suggested how the social context of their schools impacted the development of their identity, particularly in the relationships they built among colleagues and principals. With a …

The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras Jan 2014

The Influence Of Nature Relatedness On Decision Making Regarding Mate Selection In College-Educated Young Adults, Nicole Lynn Kras

Educational Studies Dissertations

Research to date has mainly focused on the influence of nature relatedness on a person’s subjective well-being (Nisbet, 2011) and as a predictor of happiness (Zelenski & Nisbet, 2014). There are few, if any, studies that look at the influence of nature relatedness on mate selection. The research question is Does nature relatedness influence mate selection in college-educated adults between the ages of 25 and 40? A secondary goal of this study is to begin to describe the role of the natural environment in the lives of college-educated young adults. Through a modified snowball sampling technique using electronic mail and …
