The Educational Approaches Of Turkish Pre-Service Elementary Mathematics Teachers In Their First Teaching Practices: Traditional Or Constructivist?, Bekir Kürşat Doruk
The Educational Approaches Of Turkish Pre-Service Elementary Mathematics Teachers In Their First Teaching Practices: Traditional Or Constructivist?, Bekir Kürşat Doruk
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Abstract: This research aimed to identify theeducational approaches that pre-service elementary mathematics teachers adopt for their first teaching practice (TP) and the reasons for their choices. It was carried out with thirteen pre-service teachers (PTs). These PTs were observed during their first TP in a real school setting, and interviews were conducted after the TP. Our observations led us to the conclusion that PTs generally tended to utilize traditional teaching approaches. The interviews revealed that PTs’ epistemological beliefs and beliefs about learning and teaching mathematics are largely in line with constructivist theory, and that their tendency for traditional approaches …
Listening To The Voices In Professional Development Schools: Steering Committee As Promoting Partnership, Aviva Klieger, Tili Wagner
Listening To The Voices In Professional Development Schools: Steering Committee As Promoting Partnership, Aviva Klieger, Tili Wagner
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The article discusses the role and importance of the steering committee in professional development schools in advancing the partnership between the teacher education college and schools. Content analysis of the minutes of steering committee meetings held over a period of 10 years was carried out. The findings reveal the potential of the steering committee as a framework for building a relationship of trust among the partners and promoting discourse about different needs. The findings indicate changes that took place in the content discussed - from focusing on procedures to focusing on the needs of the partners and from ad hoc …
Mentor Social Capital, Individual Agency And Working-Class Student Learning Outcomes: Revisiting The Structure/Agency Dialectic, Trevor William Lovett
Mentor Social Capital, Individual Agency And Working-Class Student Learning Outcomes: Revisiting The Structure/Agency Dialectic, Trevor William Lovett
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This investigation explores factors that contributed to the disparate learning identities of two white baby-boomer brothers from the same working-class family. The research, part of a broader phenomenological study into the influences of working-class masculinities and schooling offers an insight into the individual family members’ differential communities of practice that over time had the potential to affect each brother’s accumulation and utilization of specific forms of social capital. The research challenges conventional thinking regarding the role families play in reproducing educational inequality because it recognizes that an individual’s responses to multiple experiences both within and outside the family, rather than …
Supporting The Transference Of Knowledge About Language Within Teacher Education Programs, Lisl Fenwick, Michele Endicott, Marie Quinn, Sally Humphrey
Supporting The Transference Of Knowledge About Language Within Teacher Education Programs, Lisl Fenwick, Michele Endicott, Marie Quinn, Sally Humphrey
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Teacher education is effective when pre-service teachers are able to transfer knowledge from content areas to practice. This study investigates the extent to which curriculum and assessment designs, along with teaching practices, supported pre-service teachers to transfer knowledge gained about language from a first-year course into a second-year course on planning for effective learning in diverse contexts. Questionnaires and discourse analysis of assessment tasks provided insight into the extent to which the strategies designed to support transference succeeded. The findings indicate that transference of language knowledge occurs when this goal permeates curriculum and assessment design, as well as teaching practices.
Practicing Philanthropy In American Higher Education: Cultivating Engaged Citizens And Nonprofit Sector Professionals, David A. Campbell
Practicing Philanthropy In American Higher Education: Cultivating Engaged Citizens And Nonprofit Sector Professionals, David A. Campbell
Public Administration Faculty Scholarship
Recent scholarship has documented a growing interest in teaching philanthropy at the undergraduate and graduate level. This study is an overview of the nature and extent of one approach, experiential philanthropy, in which students learn philanthropy by making grants to nonprofit organizations. The study reviewed syllabi and support material for 88 experiential philanthropy courses. The analysis identified four course models offered in a variety of academic settings. These findings suggest a broader range of course options for advancing civic engagement goals that instructors might typically consider. Faculty who teach these courses pursue multiple goals, including preparing students for citizenship and …

Reflections On Deep Time: From The Big Bang To The End Of Planet Earth, Daniel E. Schafer
Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal
Historians are well-known students of time. As a professional historian, I study events that occurred roughly a century ago. While their interest in specific time periods may vary, all historians engage with the question of change over time. Historians traditionally limit themselves to the age of written records—the last several thousand years or so—though we are always happy to supplement our study of documents with statues, ruins, paintings, artifacts and other debris of the past. As we go back to earlier periods, we increasingly rely on our archeologist friends to supplement our study of written records. For the very earliest …

Generations Enough, And Time, John Niedzwiecki, Meg Streams
Belmont Humanities Symposium Journal
Since the Enlightenment, scientific inquiry has shown that the immensities of time and space humans have always sensed, worshipped, and feared are not immune to measurement. Despite the anxieties of a variety of “establishments” through the years, for many people, measurement and greater understanding has not stolen creation’s wonder, but rather increased it. Quantitative science gives us an ability to put numbers on extreme quantities, whether on the vast scale of interstellar or intergalactic distances, geological or cosmological time, or the micro-scale of tiny probabilities. Yet we have no natural intuition for such numbers. If we don’t make an effort …

Taking Linguistics Beyond Linguistics Programs and Departments Symposium
This is an upper division course that has been certified as a General Education Course in the area of “Lifelong Learning”. The course also is part of a “Social Justice” GE Path, which encourages students to select their GE courses around a particular theme. The course draws students from a variety of undergraduate majors, including Psychology, Business Law, Political Science, History and Sociology.
The course investigates the role that language and linguistics play in the legal written and oral discourse. In doing so, it hopes to serve two purposes: (1) to illustrate and explicate essential qualities of natural languages and …
Self-Imposed Length Limits In Recreational Fisheries, Christopher J. Chizinski, Dustin R. Martin, Keith L. Hurley, Kevin L. Pope
Self-Imposed Length Limits In Recreational Fisheries, Christopher J. Chizinski, Dustin R. Martin, Keith L. Hurley, Kevin L. Pope
Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications
A primary motivating factor on the decision to harvest a fish among consumptive-orientated anglers is the size of the fish. There is likely a cost-benefit trade-off for harvest of individual fish that is size and species dependent, which should produce a logistic-type response of fish fate (release or harvest)as a function of fish size and species. We define the self-imposed length limit as the length at which a captured fish had a 50% probability of being harvested, which was selected because it marks the length of the fish where the probability of harvest becomes greater than the probability of release. …

The Honors Thesis: A Handbook For Honors Directors, Deans, And Faculty Advisors, Mark Anderson, Karen Lyons, Norman Weiner
National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs
Writing the honors thesis is arguably the most rewarding undertaking of a student’s undergraduate educational experience, the capstone for honors work as well as undergraduate studies. A thesis or creative project in a discipline introduces students to the world of scholarship and professional activity in a way that no single course, either semester-long or even year-long, can. In-depth work—whether a laboratory experiment, as it might be in the sciences; hands-on research or experience, as it might be in the social sciences or pre-professional fields; intensive analysis unearthing ideas or following new lines of thought, as it might be in the …
El Ex-Hombre: Masculinidad Y Exilio En La Poesía De Juan José Domenchina, Iker González-Allende
El Ex-Hombre: Masculinidad Y Exilio En La Poesía De Juan José Domenchina, Iker González-Allende
Spanish Language and Literature Papers
This article analyzes the representation of masculinity in Juan José Domenchina’s poetry of exile. The article argues that, during his last 20 years of life in exile (1939–1959), Domenchina shows in his poetry a contradictory masculinity. On the one hand, he reaffirms normative masculinity by rejecting pompous demonstrations of suffering, describing himself as stoic, tough, strong-willed and independent, and praising nostalgically Castilian men’s hypermasculine behavior. On the other hand, Domenchina’s poetry also testifies to his feelings of emasculation, since he calls himself an “ex-man”, shows his masculine fragmentation with the figures of the doppelganger or shadow, identifies himself with a …

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences
This study investigated the links among interpersonal problem areas, depression, and alexithymia in adolescent girls at high risk for excessive weight gain and binge eating disorder. Participants were 56 girls (Mage = 14.30, SD = 1.56; 53% non-Hispanic White) with a body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) between the 75th and 97th percentiles (MBMI z = 1.57, SD = 0.32). By design, all participants reported loss of control eating patterns in the past month. Adolescents were individually interviewed prior to participating in a group interpersonal psychotherapy obesity and eating disorder prevention program, termed IPT for the prevention …

Cultural Diversity In Meta-Cognitive Beliefs About Learning: Within-European Similarities And Differences?, Marieke Christina Van Egmond, Ulrich Kühnen
Cultural Diversity In Meta-Cognitive Beliefs About Learning: Within-European Similarities And Differences?, Marieke Christina Van Egmond, Ulrich Kühnen
Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences
Previous work on cross-cultural differences in the domain of education, has primarily studied Western (European) and Asian cultures or comparisons thereof. Current internationalization trends in higher education however call for a greater understanding of possible within-European cultural differences in the domain of learning. The current paper therefore addresses the question how culture influences the beliefs of Western and Eastern European students. The studies are based on the theory that the beliefs of students and faculty in the Western cultural context can be characterized as primarily ‘mind oriented’, whereas previous research has indicated that the beliefs of East-Asian academics has a …

Boston’s Cycling Craze, 1880-1900: A Story of Race, Sport, and Society
My purpose in Boston’s Cycling Craze, 1880-1900, was to unearth a largely hidden social cycling history from the point of view of the ordinary, not the famous. While there were many Boston connections to racing champions like Major Taylor, Eddie McDuffee, and Nat Butler, and there are abundant sources of evidence about them, the research was not just about them, nor just about bicycle racing, nor just about unique or fast bikes. I wanted to write about what bicycling meant to ordinary citizens of Boston and its surrounding towns— and to write about the worsening social climate of the …
'As A Woman, As A Mother, As A Farmer': Understanding Women's Agricultural Practices, Perceptions And Adaption To Climate Change In The Upper Midwest, Erin Kline
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research shows that women’s farming identities are changing inline with their increased representation in agriculture in general, but specifically reflective of women’s increased autonomy in decision-making. This is especially evident among women who are primary operators, but increased equality is also apparent for women farming in partnerships. These key findings align with current identity research (see Brasier et al. 2014) and demonstrate the multiplicity of roles that women fulfill on the farm, and how these roles change in alignment with farming practices. This exploratory research draws from Feminist standpoint theory and situated knowledge to develop qualitative interview protocol to …
