The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen
The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen
Russian Language Journal
The Language Flagship program provides a model that strengthens and deepens cultural engagement within the humanities and creates bridges to collaboration across disciplines. Flagship addresses needs for national security and global competitiveness and integrates professional and life experience into the humanities and other fields for the students who engage in this course of study. The cross-disciplinary nature of the Flagship program and the level of personal, cultural and professional engagement required to complete the program are successfully changing the undergraduate study experience in ways that address significant issues in the ongoing discussion of a crisis in the humanities. The Language …
The “Outsider/Insider” Assignment: A Pedagogical Innovation For Teaching Cross-Cultural Understanding, Angela Garcia
The “Outsider/Insider” Assignment: A Pedagogical Innovation For Teaching Cross-Cultural Understanding, Angela Garcia
Natural & Applied Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, I describe an innovative assignment for teaching undergraduate students cross-cultural understanding. The Outsider/Insider assignment simultaneously teaches facts about cultural difference and skills for managing cross-cultural encounters. Briefly, the assignment is to write two short papers, one in which the student describes a situation in which he or she was the outsider, and the other a situation in which he or she observed a newcomer to a group where that person was an insider. The paper begins by reviewing previous research on cross-cultural interaction and its relevance for pedagogy, and describing the course, its goals, and the “Outsider/Insider” …
Contemporaneous And Lagged Effects Of Life Domains And Substance Use: A Test Of Agnew's General Theory Of Crime And Delinquency, Fawn T. Ngo, Raymond Paternoster
Contemporaneous And Lagged Effects Of Life Domains And Substance Use: A Test Of Agnew's General Theory Of Crime And Delinquency, Fawn T. Ngo, Raymond Paternoster
Criminology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications
This study presents a partial test of Agnew’s general theory of crime and delinquency. Relying on a sample of adolescents and employing measures of the self, family, school, and peers domains, this study examines the contemporaneous and lagged effects of these four life domains on the likelihood of consuming alcohol and using marijuana. This study also assesses the contemporaneous and lagged effects of the life domain variables on themselves and on one another. Overall, the results lend support for Agnew’s general theory. The results also reveal several notable puzzles and underscore the complexity of this potentially important contemporary theoretical perspective.
From Food Desert To Food Mirage: Race, Social Class, And Food Shopping In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Daniel Monroe Sullivan
From Food Desert To Food Mirage: Race, Social Class, And Food Shopping In A Gentrifying Neighborhood, Daniel Monroe Sullivan
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
New supermarkets in previous “food deserts” can benefit residents by improving their access to healthful, affordable food. But in gentrifying neighborhoods characterized by the inflow of middle-class, white residents and the outflow of working class, minorities, who benefits from a new supermarket that emphasizes organic food and environmental sustainability? This paper contributes to the food access literature by examining the food shopping behavior of diverse residents by using survey data and probability sampling in the Alberta neighborhood in Portland, Oregon (USA). Regression results show that college-educated (62%) and white residents (60%) are much more likely to shop there weekly, regardless …
Region-Urbanicity Differences In Locus Of Control: Social Disadvantage, Structure, Or Cultural Exceptionalism?, Dara Shifrer, April Sutton
Region-Urbanicity Differences In Locus Of Control: Social Disadvantage, Structure, Or Cultural Exceptionalism?, Dara Shifrer, April Sutton
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
People with internal rather than external locus of control experience better outcomes in multiple domains. Previous studies on spatial differences in control within America only focused on the South, relied on aggregate level data or historical evidence, or did not account for other confounding regional distinctions (such as variation in urbanicity). Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study, we find differences in adolescents' loci of control depending on their region and urbanicity are largely attributable to differences in their social background, and only minimally to structural differences (i.e., differences in the qualities of adolescents' schools). Differences that persist net …

Exploring Experiences Of Lower Primary School Teachers In Teaching Through Local Language As A Medium Of Instruction In Uganda, Nanseko Pharidah Bwanika
Master of Education
This study explores the experiences of lower primary teachers in teaching through a local language namely Luganda. The study conducted in Wakiso district in Uganda aimed to discover issues that emerge for teachers in the course of their teaching practice as they learn alongside teaching in local language without prior knowledge and experience of teaching and learning in a local language. Employing narrative inquiry, data was mainly collected through one-on-one interviews and supplemented by a focus group discussion, lesson observations, and analysis of relevant documents. Findings revealed that teachers were expected to learn to teach in Luganda, their second or …

Weather, Climate, And The Economy: Explaining Risk Perceptions Of Global Warming, 2001-10, Wanyun Shao, Barry D. Keim, James C. Garand, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Two series of national survey datasets (2001-10), supplemented with monthly temperature and precipitation data and unemployment data, are used to examine how weather and climate, economic performance, and individuals' sociodemographic backgrounds and political orientations affect public perceptions of global warming. Consistent with previous studies, political orientations play a key rolein determining public perceptions of global warming. Democrats and liberals are more likely than Republicans and conservatives to see global warming as an immediate and serious problem. Sociodemographic characteristics are also shown to be significant factors, with young people, women, and racial minorities likely to show higher concern about global warming …

Trayvon Martin, Race, and "American Justice": Writing Wrong is the first comprehensive text to analyze not only the killing of Trayvon Martin, but the implications of this event for the state of race in the United States. Bringing together contributions from a variety of disciplines and approaches, this text pushes readers to answer the question: "In the wake of the killing of Trayvon Martin, and the acquittal of his killer, how post-racial can we claim to be?" This collection of short and powerful chapters is at times angering and at times hopeful, but always thought provoking, critical, and poignant. This …

Dando Um Jeito: An Integrated Theological, Historical, Cultural And Strategic Study Of Missio Dei To, In And Through Brazil, Joao Mordomo
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Since it’s descobrimento on April 22nd, 1500, Brazil proved to be resistant to Protestant and Evangelical Christianity until the 20th century. However, by the end of the century, Brazil had, in many missiologists’ minds, transitioned from being a missionary field to a missionary force. There is one Brazilian trait in particular that serves well to describe both God as He has orchestrated the evangelization of Brazil, and Brazilians as they increasingly have fulfilled their role in God’s global mission to, in and through Brazil. This trait is summarized in the expression dar um jeito (pronounced “darh oon jhei’-to”). While a …
Protecting The Fairer Sex: Indiana's Failure To Improve The Lives Of Working Women, Abigail Neuman
Protecting The Fairer Sex: Indiana's Failure To Improve The Lives Of Working Women, Abigail Neuman
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
"Protecting the Fairer Sex" explores the refusal of Indiana lawmakers to place the well-being of their working women above "a can of corn," an accusation that was made by one state representative early in the legislative discussions.7 It investigates how the legislators knew nothing would come of protective legislation in the state, regardless of their fake expressions of concern. My work tells the story of how Indiana women were pushed to the periphery of a state that prided itself on its seemingly progressive nature.
Exploring Community Engagement In The Indianapolis Opera Scene, Nicole Vasconi
Exploring Community Engagement In The Indianapolis Opera Scene, Nicole Vasconi
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Despite its long history, the majority of today's society no longer holds this art form in such high regard. This is especially true for American culture, where opera companies are operating amidst a tumultuous time of foreclosures. The reasons for opera's continued decline in popularity among American audiences is a hotly debated topic for music historians and administrators, but the fact remains that the general public who once regarded opera as popular entertainment now rejects it as paltry and pointless. It is too Like many contemporary American opera companies, Indianapolis Opera and easy to cite the operas themselves as the …
The Folly Of Expecting Evil: Reconsidering The Bar's Character And Fitness Requirements, Leslie Levin
The Folly Of Expecting Evil: Reconsidering The Bar's Character And Fitness Requirements, Leslie Levin
Faculty Articles and Papers
The bar's character and fitness requirement is based on the largely untested premise that an applicant's past history helps predict whether that individual possesses the moral character needed to be a trustworthy lawyer. The primary purpose of the character inquiry is to protect the public and the judicial system from potentially problematic lawyers. The inquiry may also signal to the public that lawyers possess "good character" and deserve to be trusted with their important legal matters, thereby facilitating client representation and the administration of justice. An alternative-and more critical characterization of this purpose is that it is designed to protect the …
The Jury And Participatory Democracy, Alexandra Lahav
The Jury And Participatory Democracy, Alexandra Lahav
Faculty Articles and Papers
Citizens directly participate in the civil justice system in three ways. They can be sued, they can sue another, and they can serve on a jury. Beyond that involvement, the court system is peopled by professionals: judges, lawyers, clerks, and administrators. This Essay considers the reasons our society might want citizens to directly participate as adjudicators in the third branch.
Trolls Or Great Inventors: Case Studies Of Patent Assertion Entities, Ryan T. Holte
Trolls Or Great Inventors: Case Studies Of Patent Assertion Entities, Ryan T. Holte
Saint Louis University Law Journal
There has been much debate about the economic harms caused by patent infringement lawsuits filed by patent holders who do not make or sell products covered by their own patents—entities pejoratively referred to as “patent trolls.” This debate has thus far been largely theoretical or based on broad industry-wide data. The purpose of this Article is to present a focused empirical report that has previously been lacking—detailed information regarding the inventors themselves, the patent assertion entities (PAEs) that represent them, and the stories behind their patents. The research for this Article centers on two instructive case studies: (1) MercExchange, L.L.C., …

Making Bricks Without Straw: The Creation Of A Transnational Labour Regime, Harry Arthurs
Making Bricks Without Straw: The Creation Of A Transnational Labour Regime, Harry Arthurs
Articles & Book Chapters
This essay suggest that attempts to create a transnational regime of labour regulation have been frustrated by a series of related and mutually reinforcing developments: the incapacity or unwillingness of states to intervene in labour markets; changes in those markets associated with globalization and post-‐industrial capitalism; the decline of the “standard employment contract”; the demise of working class consciousness, solidarity and power; and the shift from “hard” to “soft” labour law. It concludes with a proposal for three-‐part strategy of reinventing labour law in the new dispensation: by enlarging its intellectual ambition; expanding its clientele; and extending its spatial reach.
A Crisis And Its Afterlife: Some Reflections On ‘Scholars In Self-Estrangement’, Ruth Buchanan
A Crisis And Its Afterlife: Some Reflections On ‘Scholars In Self-Estrangement’, Ruth Buchanan
Articles & Book Chapters
This essay is an extended reflection on the avenues of influence of a single article, one that is arguably the most cited contribution to scholarship on law and development of the last 40 years. In that article, published in the Wisconsin Law Review in 1974, David Trubek and Marc Galanter confidently identified and cogently parsed a ‘crisis’ in law and development studies in the United States. ‘Scholars in Self-Estrangement: Some Reflections on the Crisis in Law and Development Studies in the United States’ (hereinafter SISE), was undoubtedly a key intervention in the debate over US funding of law reform …
