Linking Institutional, Economic, Technological And Cultural Context To Entrepreneurship In Regions Of Europe, Aycan Kara Jan 2014

Linking Institutional, Economic, Technological And Cultural Context To Entrepreneurship In Regions Of Europe, Aycan Kara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Researchers and policy makers consider entrepreneurship to be a major source of economic development and competitiveness. Determinants of entrepreneurship have been studied at individual, regional and national levels. Even though research indicates that variation in the levels of entrepreneurship across regions within nations is greater than the national differences and that these differences persist over time (Bosma & Schutjen 2009, 2011; Fritsch & Mueller 2006; Sternberg 2004; Tamásy 2006), we still do not know the full range of regional level determinants of entrepreneurship. I drew from Wennekers’ (2006) framework and link two lines of research (international entrepreneurship and international management) …

Prison Privatization In The United States: A New Strategy For Racial Control, Gertrudis Mercadal-Sabbagh Jan 2014

Prison Privatization In The United States: A New Strategy For Racial Control, Gertrudis Mercadal-Sabbagh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There has been a stunning build-up of prisons and a growing trend in prison privatization in the last 30 years, including the rise of maximum security units. The goal of my dissertation is to understand the ideological, historic, political, and economic processes behind the changes in the criminal justice system of the United States. I analyze this problem from multiple angles—labor and policy history, discourse and public opinion, and race in America. The aim of this analysis is to uncover the reasons why crime legislation became progressively more punitive, reaction to African Americans gains in post-Civil Rights more hostile, and …

Average (Arithmetic Mean) Of Women’S Bodies, Linda Behar Jan 2014

Average (Arithmetic Mean) Of Women’S Bodies, Linda Behar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Between 1939 and 1940 the United States Government conducted a study of the measurements of women’s bodies to establish a standardized system of garment and pattern sizes. The central theme of my research is to analyze the female figure in the context of a technology-driven global contemporary society. My thesis exhibition includes a body of work that echoes the pressures that Western Society employs by standardizing women’s appearances. The focus of the work is to confront the viewer with a visual examination, which illustrates the preconceived notion that Western Society portrays the female body as a commodity and exports those …

Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson Jan 2014

Manjako Literacy And Issues In Language Of Instruction, Miles Avery Pearson

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Students in Caio, Guinea-Bissau cannot read. This is due largely to the mismatch between the language at home and the language of instruction in schools. Students in Caio speak Manjako, but classes are taught in Portuguese, the official language, which students do not understand. This makes it more difficult for students to develop literacy skills and succeed in school. Literature shows that literacy is achieved best when it is taught to students in their mother tongue. This project involved creating and testing Manjako literacy materials and concludes with recommendations for implementing a Manjako literacy program. The materials included flashcards, sample …

Sex Segregation In Advertising Creative Departments Across The Globe, Jean M. Grow, Tao Deng Jan 2014

Sex Segregation In Advertising Creative Departments Across The Globe, Jean M. Grow, Tao Deng

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study explores sex segregation in advertising creative departments globally. Using data from the 2013 Standard Directory of Advertising Agencies, the authors investigate the lack of gender diversity in creative departments in 50 countries across the world. The theoretical frames that anchor this work are the sociologically based multidimensional model of sex segregation and Csikszentmihalyi’s system’s theory of creativity. In the end, this study demonstrates powerful vertical and horizontal sex segregation. Further, for the first time, this study quantifies the underrepresentation of women in advertising creative departments, demonstrating a global average of only 20.3 percent female representation in advertising creative …

New York Police Department Stop, Question, And Frisk Program: Experiences Across Race And Gender, Thomas Mrozla Jan 2014

New York Police Department Stop, Question, And Frisk Program: Experiences Across Race And Gender, Thomas Mrozla

Theses and Dissertations

There is an ongoing discussion on how race influences the likelihood of police contact. The findings of the existing literature on how race influences the likelihood of contact with the police is fairly mixed. Although much literature exists on race alone, we know little about how different policing strategies are experienced by males and females. This research explores the effect that a suspect's gender and race will have on the likelihood that a stop will result in the suspect being frisked, arrested, or have force used against them in the five boroughs of New York City. The data for this …

Additional Support Or Extravagant Cost? : Student-Athletes' Perceptions On Athletic Academic Centers., Matthew R. Huml, Meg G. Hancock, Matthew J. Bergman Jan 2014

Additional Support Or Extravagant Cost? : Student-Athletes' Perceptions On Athletic Academic Centers., Matthew R. Huml, Meg G. Hancock, Matthew J. Bergman

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

The purpose of this study was to investigate student-athlete perceptions of the academic resources and support staff within stand-alone athletic academic centers. An online survey was completed by 196 NCAA Division-I student-athletes at two private institutions in the Northeast and one public institution in the Midwest. Results showed both public and private institution student-athletes preferred receiving advising related to their academics from either an academic or faculty advisor instead of their athletic advisor. Additional results show senior student-athletes questioning the career planning resources available to them, private student-athletes perceiving a lack of resources, and public student-athletes perceiving greater hindrances by …

Autonomy And Isomorphism: The Unfulfilled Promise Of Structural Autonomy In American State Constitutions, James A. Gardner Jan 2014

Autonomy And Isomorphism: The Unfulfilled Promise Of Structural Autonomy In American State Constitutions, James A. Gardner

Journal Articles

In the American system of federalism, states have almost complete freedom to adopt institutions and practices of internal self-governance that they find best-suited to the needs and preferences of their citizens. Nevertheless, states have not availed themselves of these opportunities: the structural provisions of state constitutions tend to converge strongly with one another and with the U.S. Constitution. This paper examines two important periods of such convergence: the period from 1776 through the first few decades of the nineteenth century, when states were inventing institutions of democratic governance and representation; and the period following the Supreme Court’s one person, one …

Talking On The Move: Place‐Based Interviewing With Undergraduate Students, Mark Holton, Mark Riley Jan 2014

Talking On The Move: Place‐Based Interviewing With Undergraduate Students, Mark Holton, Mark Riley

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Recent research has begun to pay attention to the importance of place to the research encounter. This paper makes a contribution to these discussions through an investigation into the lived experiences of higher education students. Although there is a burgeoning literature on what has been termed ‘student geographies’, there has been relatively little attention focused on the methods that we might employ in exploring these geographies. Here we consider ‘walking interviews’ as an approach to helping better comprehend students’ experiences and understandings of University towns and cities. Accompanying students ‘in the field’ allowed us to explore students’ narratives ‘in place’ …

Looking Forward Through The Past. Identification Of Fifty Priority Research Questions In Palaeoecology., A Seddon, A Mackay, A Baker, Et Al Jan 2014

Looking Forward Through The Past. Identification Of Fifty Priority Research Questions In Palaeoecology., A Seddon, A Mackay, A Baker, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Priority question exercises are becoming an increasingly common tool to frame future agendas in conservation and ecological science. They are an effective way to identify research foci that advance the field and that also have high policy and conservation relevance. To date, there has been no coherent synthesis of key questions and priority research areas for palaeoecology, which combines biological, geochemical and molecular techniques in order to reconstruct past ecological and environmental systems on time-scales from decades to millions of years. We adapted a well-established methodology to identify 50 priority research questions in palaeoecology. Using a set of criteria designed …

The Edict Of Milan Through The Prism Of Students At The Faculty Of Orthodox Theology In Macedonia, Ruzhica Cacanoska, Maja Angelovska

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This paper is an integral whole of three, seemingly different parts, each of which has the Edict of Milan as its main topic. The first part presents the historical data and key elements of the Edict of Milan which serves as an introduction into the research, which also serve as a part of the basic information that are pointed out to students. The second part of this paper points out how the anniversary of issuing the Edict of Milan--a date of utmost importance for Christianity--is being celebrated in the region. The third part contains an account of the sociological research …
