The Impact Of Islam As A Religion And Muslim Women On Gender Equality: A Phenomenological Research Study, Sonia D. Galloway

Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine and explore the meanings, structures and essence of the lived experience of Muslim women via an Islamic theoretical (Kalam) framework. The study's goal was to describe a detailed and comprehensive description of how Muslim women use Islam to promote gender equality and improve treatment within their daily lives. The critical importance of gleaning a better understanding of Islam and the perceived invisibility of Muslim women motivated the researcher to undertake this study.

Vicarious Villainy: A Critical Literary Analysis Of Sympathetic Villainy In American Musical Theatre, Mary Christopher Grogan Jan 2014

Vicarious Villainy: A Critical Literary Analysis Of Sympathetic Villainy In American Musical Theatre, Mary Christopher Grogan

Theses and Dissertations--Theatre and Dance

A disproportionate amount of research into musical theatre focuses on the positive and accessible nature of the books and librettos. Very little, if any, research into musical theatre explores its darker side, specifically the considerable amount of villainy (i.e., traditionally immoral and/or criminal behavior) practiced by some of its protagonists. Moreover, it is important to note that several of the most popular musicals contain villainous characters, and that many of these characters are highly popular and even sympathetic (i.e., understandable, pitiable, and deserving of compassion) to audiences. Therefore, this thesis explores sympathetic villainous personalities in popular American musicals, focusing on …

A Multivariate Analysis Of Consumers’ Beliefs, Attitudes, And Behaviors Associated With Locally Produced Food And Farmers’ Market Patronage, Sara Williamson

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

While farmers’ market vendors rely on loyal and frequent patrons to purchase their products, it is unclear how the intrinsic differences among farmers’ market shoppers serve as indicators of potential shopping frequency at farmers’ markets. The objectives of this thesis are to identify consumers’ intrinsic values associated with characteristics of local foods, examine how these values are reflected in consumption behaviors among farmers' market shoppers, and explore the relationship between consumption activities and shopping frequency at farmers' markets. Results suggest that the differences between frequent and infrequent farmers’ market shoppers could be explained by the individual’s levels of high and …

Dispelling Alimony Myths: The Continuing Need For Alimony And The Alimony Reform Act Of 2011, Rachel Biscardi

Western New England Law Review

This Article examines alimony in Massachusetts through the lens of the Alimony Reform Act of 2011. The first half of the Article focuses on why alimony recipients continue to need alimony despite the economic gains made by women in the past fifty years. This section identifies some, but not all, of the factors that make alimony an equitable remedy in a divorce, including: (a) the stay at home spouse’s professional sacrifices; (b) the wage gap; (c) the glass ceiling; and (d) marketable skills post-divorce. This section further dispels the arguments made by alimony opponents that the equitable division of assets …

Book Review: American Jericho: A Book Review Of The Hanging Judge By Michael A. Ponsor, Giovanna Shay Jan 2014

Book Review: American Jericho: A Book Review Of The Hanging Judge By Michael A. Ponsor, Giovanna Shay

Western New England Law Review

The Author reviews THE HANGING JUDGE, by Michael A. Ponsor, published by Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, 2013. Ponsor provides a notable, fictionalized account of the federal criminal system. He uses an imagined death penalty trial to explore themes including issues of race, prosecutorial ambition, and harsh drug sentences. THE HANGING JUDGE’s textured depiction of the legal system makes it particularly appropriate for classroom discussion in courses such as Professional Responsibility and Criminal Procedure.

Scholarship Funding Through Strategic Reporting: The Case Of Koro Island, Mignon Shardlow, Alistair Brown

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

This study used observational and textual analysis to ascertain how the Koro Island Scholarship Fund developed a reporting model to access funding for educational scholarships that facilitated access to high schooling for disadvantaged children in the Lomaiviti Group of Eastern Fiji. The reporting model also provided information to key stakeholders, such as donor groups and aid organizations, for the assessment of student and funding performance. It appears sound financial accountability of a scholarship fund is welcomed by donors. The scholarship fund appeared to work well if there was limited intrusion into the operations of a donee school, providing space for …

Emotional Labour In Harm-Reduction Practice In Ireland: An Exploratory Study, Joanna Fabianowska, Niall G. Hanlon Jan 2014

Emotional Labour In Harm-Reduction Practice In Ireland: An Exploratory Study, Joanna Fabianowska, Niall G. Hanlon

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

Arlie Russell Hochschild’s concept of emotional labour has been applied extensively in the analysis of the emotional, relational and identity processes in a wide variety of service occupations, and to a lesser extent to caring occupations where the central goal is nurturing. It has featured infrequently in social care in general and has not featured significantly in academic debates in Ireland. The paper is based on a small qualitative study of social care workers in harm reduction [HR] day services in the Dublin region. The aim of the research study was to explore how emotional labour impacts on workers employed …

Isprm Discussion Paper: Proposing A Conceptual Description Of Health-Related Rehabilitation Services., Thorsten Meyer, Christoph Gutenbrunner, Carlotte Kiekens, Dimitrios Skempes, John L Melvin, Kuno Schedler, Marta Imamura, Gerold Stucki

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Faculty Papers

There is a need for a comprehensive classification system of health-related rehabilitation services. For conceptual clarity our aim is to provide a health-related conceptual description of the term "rehabilitation service". First, we introduce a common understanding of the term "rehabilitation", based on the current definition in the World Health Organization's World Report on Disability, and a conceptual description of rehabilitation agreed upon by international Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine organizations. From a health perspective, rehabilitation can be regarded as a general health strategy with the aim of enabling persons with health conditions experiencing or likely to experience disability to achieve and …

Fostering Organizational Learning: Superintendent And Principal Relationships, Ryan P. Clark Jan 2014

Fostering Organizational Learning: Superintendent And Principal Relationships, Ryan P. Clark

Theses and Dissertations--Educational Leadership Studies

Schools have a responsibility to prepare students for the 21st century because the global economy demands a workforce that can adapt to a constantly changing and increasingly complex environment. High-stakes accountability for student learning is the United States’ strategy to ensure that schools adequately prepare students. This high-stakes environment requires school leaders to make curricular and instructional decisions intended to simply prepare students for tests. Yielding to the pressure to perform on tests often neglects students’ opportunities to think critically or engage in complex problem solving, which are both important skills for today’s workplace.

Some school and district leaders …

Boycotts To Bombs: History, Causes, And Comparison Of The Palestinian Intifadas, Leah Wilson Jan 2014

Boycotts To Bombs: History, Causes, And Comparison Of The Palestinian Intifadas, Leah Wilson

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

One of the foremost geopolitical issues of the twenty first century, the conflict between Israel and Palestine has a complicated, ominous history, and limited signs of hope for resolution in the near future. Darkened by particularly bloody and significant events such as the 1948 Arab-Israel dispute, the 1967 Six Day War, and the continuously violent actions taken near the turn of the century, the conflict continues to detrimentally impact the security of the region, the socioeconomic livelihood of Palestinians, and the dwindling influence of international actors to curb recognizably illegal settlements and flagrant human rights violations. Particularly significant to the …

Self-Evaluation With And Without External Feedback To Increase Room Cleaning Skills In Students With Mild Intellectual Disabilities Or Behavior Disorders, Allison Smith Varisco Jan 2014

Self-Evaluation With And Without External Feedback To Increase Room Cleaning Skills In Students With Mild Intellectual Disabilities Or Behavior Disorders, Allison Smith Varisco

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

As students with disabilities age out of school-age resources, the need for self-evaluative skills in work tasks becomes more important. This study compared self-evaluation with reinforcement and self-evaluation with reinforcement plus external evaluation when completing room cleaning skills. The younger students did not demonstrate the ability to self-evaluate without external evaluation. Both conditions were effective when evaluating the older group of students. The author proposes additional research in looking at self-evaluative skills for specific age groups and conditions.

Objective: We examined geographic trends in the association between neighborhood crime rates and premature mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD) using New Haven, CT USA as a model city.

Methods: Neighborhoods in New Haven were established by existing census tracts. CHD deaths were identified from the Connecticut Master Death Files and violent crime …

"The Struggle For The Supremacy Of The Coast": Baseball And Identity In Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Christopher G.F. Hoffman Ma

All Student Scholarship

During the summer months of the first decade of the twentieth century, the Boothbay Harbor region was invigorated with baseball fever. By 1900, Americans had come to understand baseball as its national game, and Boothbay Harbor discovered and nourished the game in the final decades of the nineteenth century. But as the twentieth century began, baseball became more than a game: it was a business, a spectacle, and an opportunity for inhabitants of the region to define themselves based upon the team they supported.

Probing The Etic Vs. Emic Nature Of Consumer Ethnocentrism, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski Jan 2014

Probing The Etic Vs. Emic Nature Of Consumer Ethnocentrism, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

The consumer ethnocentrism concept and its measure, the CETSCALE, remain very popular in cross-national research chiefly because they serve as a means to understand consumer attitudes toward imports. But the usage of consumer ethnocentrism and its measure are based on the premise that they have universal or etic properties. Conflicting studies, however, find that the scale's structure is far more complicated than initially believed, and that it may not be uni-dimensional as originally proposed. Is it possible that the consumer ethnocentrism concept and its measure are culture bound? The goal of this study is to resolve this ambiguity.

The Catholic Schoolgirl & The Wet Nurse: On The Ecology Of Oppression, Trauma And Crisis, Jade E. Davis

Publications and Research

This paper explores the idea of facing oppression by exploring how two photographs, one of a Catholic schoolgirl and one of a wet nurse, were received as they made their way through social media. In addition, the paper looks at a blog post that was made about photographs from a similar time period as the photos. By exploring how the photos were received through Fanon, visual studies, and psychoanalytic theory, the paper proposes a new way to view these photographs outside of the narratives of Oppression and Trauma. Instead, by understanding the re-inscription of the dominant narratives as an ongoing …

Successful Organizational Change: Aligning Change Type With Methods, Serina Al-Haddad Jan 2014

Successful Organizational Change: Aligning Change Type With Methods, Serina Al-Haddad

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The motivation behind this research is the prevalence of challenges and ambiguity associated with successful organizational change and the numerous available approaches in dealing with these challenges and ambiguity. Many definitions and methods have been suggested to manage change; however, organizations still report a high failure rate of their change initiatives. These high failure rates highlight the continuing need for research and investigation, and imply a lack of a valid framework for managing successful organizational change. This dissertation critically reviews the concept of having one change approach as the “silver-bullet”. In pursuit of this goal, this research contributes a roadmap …

Identifying Influential Agents In Social Systems, Mahsa Maghami Jan 2014

Identifying Influential Agents In Social Systems, Mahsa Maghami

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation addresses the problem of influence maximization in social networks. In- fluence maximization is applicable to many types of real-world problems, including modeling contagion, technology adoption, and viral marketing. Here we examine an advertisement domain in which the overarching goal is to find the influential nodes in a social network, based on the network structure and the interactions, as targets of advertisement. The assumption is that advertisement budget limits prevent us from sending the advertisement to everybody in the network. Therefore, a wise selection of the people can be beneficial in increasing the product adoption. To model these social …
