What We Should Have Known About The Black Vote: A Comprehensive Analysis Of Voter Turnout In Presidential Elections, Zulema T. Blair Phd

Ralph Bunche Journal of Public Affairs

A historic increase in African American voter turnout in the 2008 presidential elections has also contributed to the overall increase in voter turnout in presidential elections, which steadily declined from 1960 through 2000. Using a logistic regression analysis for presidential years 1980 through 2000, this article re-examines why voter turnout in presidential election years take place. The traditional and well-established explanations of socioeconomic status (SES), demographics, group consciousness, mobilization, psychological orientations, and economic displacement, were regressed onto voter turnout where race is deemed insignificant. However, in a closer analysis where income was used to separate the voting age population by …

An Investigation Into The Challenges Of Joint Basing, Charles H. Morton Jun 2014

An Investigation Into The Challenges Of Joint Basing, Charles H. Morton

Theses and Dissertations

The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) went farther than any other previous BRAC in attempting to discover budgetary efficiencies by redefining domestic military infrastructure. BRAC recommendation #146 set into motion the construct of joint basing in which installation support responsibilities were transferred to lead-Components resulting in 12 major mergers of 26 military installations. Much has been written on the cost savings progress of joint bases; however little has been written in academia as to the implementation challenges that have hindered true cost savings from being realized. This research leverages the Delphi Method in capturing and ranking the top issues …

Negotiating Muslim Womanhood: The Adaptation Strategies Of International Students At Two American Public Colleges, Amber Michelle Gregory Jun 2014

Negotiating Muslim Womanhood: The Adaptation Strategies Of International Students At Two American Public Colleges, Amber Michelle Gregory

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

From a Western perspective, North Americans and Western Europeans perceive Muslim women as being oppressed (Andrea 2009; Lutz 1997, 96; Ozyurt 2013). Led by this assumption, some view studying abroad as an international student as an experience that allows Muslim women the opportunity to "escape" this supposed oppression and to know "freedom" in the U.S. However, Muslim women's experiences are more dynamic and complex than this dualism suggests. In this thesis, I explore adaptation strategies of Muslim women international students, and how gender, race, and religion affect their experiences while abroad. Furthermore, I explore the women's use of emotion management …

Effects Of Internal And External Factors On Internet-Based Digital Technology Usage By Smes In A Developing Country, Md Shah Azam, Mohammed Quaddus

Communications of the IIMA

This paper analyses the ef ects of culture and environment on the adoption and use of Internet based digital technology (IBDT) by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from a developing country perspective. A structural equation modeling is finally employed within a mix method research setting with a cross-sectional dataset of 557 SMEs in Bangladesh. The study reveals a significant association of normative pressures, coercive pressures, power distance, in-group collectivism, Bengali values, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use with SMEs intention to use IBDT while intention significantly affects actual usage behavior. The study concludes with some implications of the …

Trusting The Trusted: An Empirical Analysis, Sanjog Ray, Ambuj Mahanti Jun 2014

Trusting The Trusted: An Empirical Analysis, Sanjog Ray, Ambuj Mahanti

Communications of the IIMA

One aspect of research in the area of bootstrapping of cold start users in trust-aware recommender systems is on guiding new users find trusted users in the trust network. In this paper we examine the question “Which type of users do cold start users actually trust?” We analyze the users trusted by cold start users in the Epinions dataset (Massa & Avesani, 2006a). We examine the set of trusted users on the basis of four critical parameters: number of outgoing links, number of incoming links, number of items rated and a hybrid parameter defined as preference score. We also experimentally …

Environmental Software Development With Uml, Peter A. Khaiter, Marina G. Erechtchoukova Jun 2014

Environmental Software Development With Uml, Peter A. Khaiter, Marina G. Erechtchoukova

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The issues of rational use of the environmental objects continue to attract public attention world-wide. There are even growing concerns on the part of various stakeholders and general public in relation to the on-going global climate change and a common demand for a harmonized type of relationships between the societal development and the environment crystalized in the concept of environmentally-friendly sustainable development. The interplay of a broad range of fields, such as economics, ecology, psychology, sociology, hydrology and agronomy, makes the area of sustainability inherently complex. Decision-making in the field requires a due support by the sophisticated environmental information systems …

A Bayesian Maximum Entropy Scheme For The Assimilation Of Mobile Recordings With Simulations Of Urban Micrometeorological Data, Uwe Schlink, Gabi Fischer Jun 2014

A Bayesian Maximum Entropy Scheme For The Assimilation Of Mobile Recordings With Simulations Of Urban Micrometeorological Data, Uwe Schlink, Gabi Fischer

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper proposes a framework for assimilating urban temperature measurements with simulations of an urban micrometeorological model. Data assimilation, a technique that incorporates observations into a computer model of a real system, is commonly applied in global and regional weather forecasting and an emerging issue in urban meteorological modelling. For that purpose, we suggest applying a novel approach, the Spatiotemporal Epistemic Knowledge Synthesis (SEKS). It combines simulations of a thermodynamic urban climate model, as general knowledge base, with a model output statistics (MOS) of observations, as site-specific knowledge base, by means of Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) inference resulting in posterior …

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif Jun 2014

Immigrant Diversity And Host Country Acculturation In Leader-Member Dyads, Monica M. Sharif

Open Access Dissertations

Leadership scholars have investigated the importance of leader-member dyads for several years. However, research has largely omitted the consideration of immigrant diversity with regards to leader-member relationships and outcomes in the organization. The US has experienced an influx of talented immigrants that are joining the workforce and, therefore, important to today’s economy. In a sample of two organizations, one based in South America, and another headquartered in Miami, Florida, I propose two models. One model examines the role of country of origin incongruence and LMX and the other examines the role of host country acculturation and LMX. Immigrants come from …

A Graph-Theoretic Approach To Improved Curriculum Structure And Assessment Placement, Jay M. Lightfoot Jun 2014

A Graph-Theoretic Approach To Improved Curriculum Structure And Assessment Placement, Jay M. Lightfoot

Communications of the IIMA

Assurance of student learning is an important issue in modern education. Accrediting bodies and government entities alike have begun requiring proof that students actually learn the material taught in the classroom. To comply with this mandate, education programs are actively engaged in incorporating assessment procedures into their curricula. Unfortunately, there are no generally agreed upon methods on how to do this. This paper addresses the issue and answers several key questions concerning where to locate topic coverage, assessment data collection, and corrective action within the curriculum. The approach described and developed in this paper cast the curriculum problem into an …

Voluntary And Involuntary Self-Disclosure In Decision-Making Virtual Teams, Shoshana Altschuller, Raquel Benbunan-Fich

Communications of the IIMA

This study investigates the roles of visual representation and verbal self-disclosure in decision making virtual teams via a content analysis of group discussions. Findings indicate that visual representation encourages increased self-disclosure in the form of personal and universal revelations of facts and thoughts during virtual group communication. Increased revelations are in turn found to impact the nature of group decisions. These results theoretical and practical implications for virtual decision making.
