Review: 'Harold Frederic’S Social Drama And The Crisis Of 1890s Evangelical Protestant Culture', William Vance Trollinger
Review: 'Harold Frederic’S Social Drama And The Crisis Of 1890s Evangelical Protestant Culture', William Vance Trollinger
History Faculty Publications
Harold Frederic’s The Damnation of Theron Ware (1896) is a terrific novel. The title character is a young, naïve, poorly educated Methodist minister who — when the narrative begins — has been appointed to take the pastorate of a small-town church in upstate New York. It is within only a matter of weeks after moving to Octavius with his wife, Alice, that Theron makes the acquaintance of exotic and compelling individuals who challenge his heretofore unexamined evangelical faith. Abandoning his Methodism with impunity, Ware is soon hurtling toward his “damnation.”
Damned but not dead: At the end of the novel, …
Domestic Violence Victims - An Examination Of Advocates' Experiences And Impact On Services, Tanya M. Grant
Domestic Violence Victims - An Examination Of Advocates' Experiences And Impact On Services, Tanya M. Grant
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This qualitative study examines advocates’ phenomenological experiences with victims of domestic violence, specifically whether advocates’ personal biases impede the delivery of services to victims. Agencies and shelters in the communities that serve victims of domestic violence are an invaluable resource; however, if advocates are not providing appropriate services, victims can often find themselves in a more traumatic state. Ten domestic violence advocates throughout the State of Connecticut were interviewed and asked a series of questions pertaining directly to their day-to-day roles. The study also examined their attitudes about domestic violence, their perceptions of the work they do, and whether or …

A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham
A Domino Effect From Fairness To Online Customer Loyalty, Tuyet Mai Nguyen, Phong Tuan Nham
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Distributive fairness, procedural fairness, and interactional fairness are often researched together in many previous studies. However, in order to explore the power of fairness, the second-order fairness needs to be created to find the way to customer loyalty. An online survey was developed and distributed in Vietnam. Seven hundred fifty-eight questionnaires were completed and analyzed using a two-step methodology (including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling). The results of the study showed that there is the domino effect to customer loyalty, which departs from fairness, with trust and customer satisfaction as two mediators.
Affluent Populations And Their Effect On Biological Diversity Through The Consumption Of Meat, Electronics, And Motor Vehicles, Melody Flores
Affluent Populations And Their Effect On Biological Diversity Through The Consumption Of Meat, Electronics, And Motor Vehicles, Melody Flores
Honors College Theses
The human has caused a far greater impact on the planet's biodiversity than any other species in existence, due to the impact of population, afflluence, and technology. This thesis will argue the importance of biological diversity and how affluent populations are reducing biodiversity through the consumption of meat, electronics, and motor vehicles. Aldo Leopold's "The Land Ethic" and Herman Daly's "The Impossibility Theorem", among others, create a rubric evaluating human activities and provide alternative views on economic impossibilities. Consumption is reviewed from an ecocentric perspective, a holistic outlook placing emphasis on the ecosystem. The reader will become cognizant of their …
Bottom-Up Workplace Law Enforcement, Charlotte S. Alexander, Arthi Prasad
Bottom-Up Workplace Law Enforcement, Charlotte S. Alexander, Arthi Prasad
Indiana Law Journal
This Article presents an original analysis of newly available data from a landmark survey of 4387 low-wage, front-line workers in the three largest U.S. cities. We analyze data on worker claims, retaliation, and legal knowledge to investigate what we call “bottom-up” workplace law enforcement, or the reliance of many labor and employment statutes on workers themselves to enforce their rights. We conclude that bottom-up workplace law enforcement may fail to protect the workers who are most vulnerable to workplace rights violations, as they often lack the legal knowledge and incentives to complain that are prerequisites for enforcement activity.

Evaluation Of The Association Between Exposure To Different Forms Of Electronic Media With Dietary Intake And Body Mass Index Percentile In Hispanic And American Indian Pre-Schoolers In Rural New Mexico, Kevin Patrick Vlahovich
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
BACKGROUND: Obesity is a problem for Hispanic and American Indian children. Sedentary behavior has been linked to increased body weight and poor dietary quality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the associations between different forms of sedentary behavior involving exposure to electronic media with dietary intake and body mass index (BMI) Percentile. METHODS: My cross-sectional study used baseline anthropomorphic measures and parent survey data collected as part of the Child Health Initiative for Lifelong Eating and Exercise (CHILE) study. I used multivariate linear regression to evaluate the relationship between different forms of sedentary behavior (time per week spent …
The Negotiation Within: The Impact Of Internal Conflict Over Identity And Role On Across-The-Table Negotiations, Robert C. Bordone, Tobias C. Berkman, Sara E. Del Nido
The Negotiation Within: The Impact Of Internal Conflict Over Identity And Role On Across-The-Table Negotiations, Robert C. Bordone, Tobias C. Berkman, Sara E. Del Nido
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This article argues that negotiators' experiences of internal conflict over their identity and role - what we term "the negotiation within" - has a significant impact on across-the-table negotiations in the legal profession and in business. This impact has been mostly overlooked by the literature on negotiation, which focuses on strategic, structural, and psychological barriers to negotiated agreements that are divorced from the real, internal experiences of most negotiators. The article analyzes the impact and suggests a typology for naming and understanding internal conflict. It concludes with a three-stage prescription on how to manage such conflicts described as Mirror work, …
Assessing Transit Fare Equity In Utah Using A Geographic Information System, Steven Farber, Keith Batholomew, Xiao Li, Antonio Paez, Khandker M. Nurul Habib
Assessing Transit Fare Equity In Utah Using A Geographic Information System, Steven Farber, Keith Batholomew, Xiao Li, Antonio Paez, Khandker M. Nurul Habib
TREC Final Reports
The goal of this study is to develop and apply a new method for assessing social equity impacts of distance-based public transit fares. Shifting to a distance-based fare structure can disproportionately favor or penalize different subgroups of a population based on variations in settlement patterns, travel needs, and most importantly, transit use. According to federal law, such disparities must be evaluated by the transit agency, but the area-based techniques identified by the Federal Transit Authority for assessing discrimination fail to account for disparities in distances travelled by transit users. This means that transit agencies currently lack guidelines for assessing the …

Her-Storicizing Baldness: Situating Women's Experiences With Baldness From Skin And Hair Disorders, Kasie Holmes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A general goal to my study was to promote an inclusive approach to baldness by sharing and centering women's experiences with baldness from skin and hair conditions, such as autoimmune alopecia areata conditions and monilethrix. Specifically, a main goal of my study was to her-storicize the lived experiences of women who are bald from skin and hair conditions by examining medical and cultural discourses surrounding these conditions, femininity, and female baldness. Additionally, my study considers strategies of accommodation and resistance that bald women perform in a given context, space, or time. For instance, I consider the ways participants manage their …

Parenting Behaviors, Adolescent Depressive Symptoms, And Problem Behavior: The Role Of Self-Esteem And School Adjustment Difficulties Among Chinese Adolescents, Cixin Wang, Yan Ruth Xia, Wenzhen Li, Stephan M. Wilson, Kevin Bush, Gary Peterson
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Cross-sectional data from 589 Chinese adolescents were used to investigate whether parenting behaviors are directly or indirectly (through self-esteem and school adjustment difficulties) associated with adolescent depressive symptoms and problem behavior. Structural equation modeling results showed that school adjustment difficulties fully mediated the relations between two parenting behaviors (parental punitiveness and paternal monitoring) and adolescent problem behavior and partially mediated the relation between maternal monitoring and adolescent problem behavior. Adolescent self-esteem partially mediated the relations between maternal punitiveness and adolescent depressive symptoms and fully mediated the relations between parental support and adolescent depressive symptoms. Parental love withdrawal was not significantly …
Commitment, Forgiveness, And Relationship Self-Regulation: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, Heather Michele Smith
Commitment, Forgiveness, And Relationship Self-Regulation: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Model, Heather Michele Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Relationship self-regulation (RSR) refers to the “work”, or effort and strategies, that partners exert over time to maintain the health of their romantic relationships. Most research focuses on self-reports of RSR, however, several studies suggest that partner perceptions are more influential in relationship appraisal. In addition, most RSR research has focused not on partners' attitudes and virtues like commitment, but instead on personality traits, emotional health, and communication skills. In this study, we examine the relationship between partners' levels of commitment and forgiveness within their relationships, and how they perceive their partner's use of RSR behaviors. Using paired data from …

Barriers To Native American Women Veterans’ Health Care Access On Tworeservations: Northern Cheyenne And Flathead, Luma Issa Al Masarweh
Theses and Dissertations
Little research has addressed the needs of Native American veterans. This study aims to provide a better understanding of Native American women veterans’ experiences using data from the Veteran Administration and Indian Health Services. Fifteen interviews were conducted with special attention to quality and quantity of health and mental health care services available to veterans, the barriers and local contextual factors in accessing and utilizing services, and potential solutions to service gaps for women veterans from two Montana reservations, the Northern Cheyenne and Flathead Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. American Indians and Alaska Natives serve at a higher rate in …
Becoming An Altruistic Learner, Aaron W. Snyder
Becoming An Altruistic Learner, Aaron W. Snyder
Theses and Dissertations
This master’s thesis is a qualitative research project that explored the transformation of multiple individuals who initially learned for self-interested purposes, but later had a shift in their desire to learn so as to benefit others. The author collected rich narratives that described this phenomenon and provided insight into the following question: what is the experience of a learner who transitions from learning out of self-interest to learning out of altruistic purposes? The author found the following five major themes across six participants as they transitioned to more altruistic learning: humility, self-efficacy, resources, success and agency. These themes give insight …
The Black Church In An Era Of Mcdonaldization, Deliah Brown
The Black Church In An Era Of Mcdonaldization, Deliah Brown
Theses (Pre-2016)
In this thesis, I explore Black storefront churches whose populations range from threehundred to fifteen-hundred, to observe whether they are following the rubric of megachurches to stay relevant and alive in this age of advanced technology, religious pluralism, mass consumption and Black upward mobility. The mode of operation of these churches in this current religious social climate deserves scholarly exploration. The McDonaldization process has been studied extensively by George Ritzer, an American social scientists, who argues that the distinct principles (1) calculability; (2) predictability (3) efficiency; and (3) control like the fast food industry are coming to dominant every sector …

Missing The Point: The Real Impact Of Native Mascots And Team Names On American Indian And Alaska Native Youth, Victoria Phillips, Erik Stegman
Research Reports & White Papers
The debate over the racist name and mascot of the professional football team based in the nation’s capital, the “Redskins,” has reached a fever pitch in recent months. Fifty U.S. senators signed a letter urging the National Football League, or NFL, to take action and change the name. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently canceled several of the team’s trademarks because they were disparaging to American Indian and Alaska Native, or AI/AN, people and communities. And several media outlets across the country have stopped printing and using the name, including the San Francisco Chronicle, Slate, and The Seattle Times. …
Self-Regulating Teamwork Behaviors In Low-Volume & High-Complexity Production, Aaron W. Powell
Self-Regulating Teamwork Behaviors In Low-Volume & High-Complexity Production, Aaron W. Powell
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
An environment of ever increasing competition drives manufacturing organizations to continually search for ways to improve the performance of their production operations. Lean manufacturing, born out of the Toyota Production System (TPS), has become the dominant improvement method sought to meet this need. Although well established in high-volume production settings, the application of lean production methods in low-volume and high-complexity (LVHC) manufacturing contexts has not been as successful. A commonly cited reason is a biased focus on the technical aspects of implementing lean methods with little regard for the social system involved in the change. In the LVHC manufacturing context, …
The Influence Of Childhood Maltreatment On Substance Abuse In Adulthood, James Michael Blinco
The Influence Of Childhood Maltreatment On Substance Abuse In Adulthood, James Michael Blinco
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This study examines the relationship between suffering physical or sexual abuse as a child and drug or alcohol use in adulthood. Data was used from the first three waves of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health survey. This study found that being a victim of childhood physical abuse can lead to abuse of alcohol later in life. In addition being male and African American are key factors in predicting alcohol abuse and other illegal drug use in adulthood. No significant relationship was found between being a victim of sexual abuse and abusing alcohol, using marijuana, or using any other …
Exploring Police Shootings And Officer Survivability: A Case Study, Amanda Leigh Farrell
Exploring Police Shootings And Officer Survivability: A Case Study, Amanda Leigh Farrell
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
Police shootings are incidents that have lasting effects on the officers involved, the department to which they belong and the community at large, yet these events are rarely discussed holistically with consideration given to the multiple parties impacted. Given the significant impacts, officer survivability and resilience in the aftermath of a shooting incident have become a topic with which most modern police agencies are concerned. While this number of lethal incidents may seem surprisingly low, there is often a narrow focus on the shooting incident itself, with little attention paid to pre-event factors or to the long and short term …
Prosociality And The Military, Alexander J. Field
Prosociality And The Military, Alexander J. Field
Economics
In this paper, I consider a body of observational evidence not commonly studied by social scientists, namely the behavior of men and women (mostly men) in the military. I focus here on two issues: first the behavioral foundations for creating an effective military unit and second, evidence that infantrymen have historically been reluctant to fire on the enemy and how this reluctance has been overcome in the last half century through changes in military training. The evidence in each of these areas reinforces the appeal of the idea of cognitive modularity, the view that thought and behavior are influenced by …

Across-Year Social Stability Shapes Network Structure In Wintering Migrant Sparrows, Daizaburo Shizuka, Alexis S. Chaine, Jennifer Anderson, Oscar Johnson, Inger Marie Laursen, Bruce E. Lyon
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Migratory birds often form flocks on their wintering grounds, but important details of social structure such as the patterns of association between individuals are virtually unknown. We analysed networks of co-membership in short-term flocks for wintering golden-crowned sparrows (Zonotrichia atricapilla) across three years and discovered social complexity unsuspected for migratory songbirds. The population was consistently clustered into distinct social communities within a relatively small area (~ 7 ha). Birds returned to the same community across years, with mortality and recruitment leading to some degree of turnover in membership. These spatiotemporal patterns were explained by the combination of space …

Hispanic Residential Ethnic Density And Depression In Post-Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Re-Thinking The Role Of Social Support, Ellen-Ge Denton, Jonathan A. Shaffer, Carmela Alcantra, Lynn Clemow, Elizabeth Denton
Publications and Research
Background: The ethnic density hypothesis suggests that ethnic density confers greater social support and consequently protects against depressive symptoms in ethnic minority individuals. However, the potential benefits of ethnic density have not been examined in individuals who are facing a specific and salient life stressor.
Aims: We examined the degree to which the effects of Hispanic ethnic density on depressive symptoms are explained by socioeconomic resources and social support.
Methods: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS, N = 472) completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and measures of demographics, ACS clinical factors and perceived social support. Neighborhood characteristics, including median …

Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas
Converlogical Management Theory: Towards The Development Of The Communicative Competence Of An Organization, Marife C. Posadas
DLSU Business & Economics Review
Management practice has been evolving from a very rigid and behavioristic practice into something more flexible and humanistic. Critical Management Studies (CMS) is, partly, inspiring such move. In the same vein, I attempted to combine and “mutually animate” Management by Objective (MBO) popularized by great management guru Peter Drucker and the Theory of Communicative Action (TCA) by Jurgen Habermas. The result of which is a novel management theory called “Converlogical” (Conversational/Dialogical) Management Theory. I used concept analysis and deductive approach on various materials to build the theory. The whole MBO process was animated by embedding the validity claims of Habermas’ …
