The Association Between The Social Context Of Mealtime, Children's Diet, Caregiver's Experiences With Discrimination And Household Food Insecurity, Michael Patrick Burke Jan 2014

The Association Between The Social Context Of Mealtime, Children's Diet, Caregiver's Experiences With Discrimination And Household Food Insecurity, Michael Patrick Burke

Theses and Dissertations

The social context of mealtime---defined as the social interactions and practices during mealtime---plays an important role in children's diet. Household food insecurity disrupts or causes worry about the household food supply, and therefore may negate the positive effect of the social context of meals; however, little research has examined household food security and the social context of mealtime. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between various aspects of the social context of mealtime---dietary modeling, parenting style, eating together, mealtime screen time, and priority and atmosphere of mealtime---and dietary quality among children within food-insecure households. The results …

Family Support Caseloads--Determinants Of Kentucky's Division Of Family Support Personnel Allocation, David Bachert Jan 2014

Family Support Caseloads--Determinants Of Kentucky's Division Of Family Support Personnel Allocation, David Bachert

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

This paper is an examination of the determinants of Family Support employee allocation. Specifically, related to Kentucky, the goal of this research is to determine if public assistance caseloads are equitable across nine geographic regions. A review of relevant literature provides a larger context to this topic. Literature primarily suggests three mechanisms by which Family Support resources might be allocated: legal regulations, postcode lottery, and Tiebout migration.

Supported by literature the larger context for this paper leads to the examination of five independent variables: (1) percent of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients \, (2) total population, (3) percent of the …

Analyzing Perceptions Of Barriers To Self-Sufficiency Of Local Social Service Officials And Their Priorities For Local Government Funding, Zheng Li

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Self-sufficiency means a family can adequately meet their basic needs without repeated assistance from public or private social service organizations. However, there are many barriers preventing Fayette County residents from becoming self-sufficient. Because Lexington Fayette Urban County officials wanted to consider a new way to allocate local government resources, a needs assessment was conducted to assess the barriers to self-sufficiency for residents in Fayette County. As one part of the needs assessment, my research was to design and analyze a survey instrument to assess the perceptions of barriers to self-sufficiency of local social service providers and their priorities for local …

Measuring Academic Achievement Of University Of Kentucky Student Athletes: Helping The Center For Academic And Tutorial Services Better Allocate Resources, Chatham Penrod

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

The NCAA requires its member institutions and student athletes to maintain certain academic requirements to remain eligible for competition. To ensure academic success, many institutions establish academic centers for their student athletes. The University of Kentucky was the first institution to develop a facility of this type. The Center for Academic and Tutorial Services (CATS) provides academic enhancement for its student athletes.

After a brief overview on current NCAA academic eligibility requirements, this paper looks at the organization of CATS and at the current literature on student athlete academic achievement. Then a few analyses were conducted on the academic achievement …

The Role Of Government Economic Programmes In Developing Small And Medium Enterprises In The Sultanate Of Oman / Mubarak Ibrahim Adam Mohammad, Mubarak Ibrahim Adam Mohammad

Student Works (2010-2019)

It has been stated that government and market forces remain relevant in the development of the economy. Meanwhile, the uncertainty in the global business environment had continued to stimulate activities in the SME sector to the extent that both the Sultanate of Oman and SME owners in the sector have evolved policies that had helped them weather the storm of the business environment. Therefore this study examines the extent to which government assistance influences the development of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the Sultanate of Oman. With a calculated sample size of 885, questionnaires were distributed and 500 …

Non-Believing Students At A Christian Tertiary Institution: What Drew Them, What They Expected, And What They Found, Ruth Smith Jan 2014

Non-Believing Students At A Christian Tertiary Institution: What Drew Them, What They Expected, And What They Found, Ruth Smith

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Many Christian tertiary educators share a passion to see holistic transformation in students’ lives. This qualitative study grew out of the desire to explore whether students who are not Christ-followers, but who apply to study within an overtly Christian context, experience such change. It investigated why they chose to apply, their initial expectations, the positives and challenges of their lived experiences, and self-perceptions of any holistic change. While geographical proximity appeared to be the strongest motivator, many did experience holistic change during their time of study. The most daunting challenge appeared to be the biblical critique required in assignment and …

A Mathematics Teacher’S Journey Of Identity Construction And Change, Anthony B. Stinson Jan 2014

A Mathematics Teacher’S Journey Of Identity Construction And Change, Anthony B. Stinson

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Despite some gains, improving mathematics instruction remains an area of concern in the United States. The implementation of the Common Core Standards and the challenge of teaching the 21st Century student require mathematics teachers to examine their pedagogy to determine if they need to change or improve their practices. This paper provides a personal account of my journey when determining my identity as a mathematics teacher and how constructing my identity helped in changing and improving my practices as a mathematics teacher. The study was done using autoethnography, a burgeoning research method, and identity theory. This study has the goals …

The current literature on truancy diversion court programs has failed to examine middle and high school truants’ perceptions regarding how well truancy diversion court programs improve school attendance and performance. As a result, the purpose of this study was to examine participants’ perceptions regarding how well the Project Reconnect Diversion Program empowered their improved school attendance, compliance with school rules, and completion of classroom assignments. The researcher used a case study design to investigate the participants’ perceptions of the Project Reconnect Diversion Program. Purposive sampling was employed to select the participants who completed the Project Reconnect Diversionary Program during the …

Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon Jan 2014

Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon

Faculty Work

University psychology and sociology researchers rated the likelihood they would engage in misconduct as described in 9 research scenarios, while also making moral judgments and rating the likelihood of discovery and sanctions. Multiple regression revealed significant effects across various scenarios for moral judgment as well as shame and embarrassment on reducing misconduct. The effects on misconduct of the perceived probability of sanctions were conditioned on moral judgments in some scenarios. The results have implications for how universities address the prevention, detection, and sanctioning of research misconduct.

Incidence And Impact Of Urinary Incontinence, Pain, And Other Comorbidities On Health Related Quality Of Life (Hrqol) For Postpartum Bangladeshi Women, Lori Maria Walton, S. J. M. Ummul Ambia, Bassima Hussein Schbley Jan 2014

Incidence And Impact Of Urinary Incontinence, Pain, And Other Comorbidities On Health Related Quality Of Life (Hrqol) For Postpartum Bangladeshi Women, Lori Maria Walton, S. J. M. Ummul Ambia, Bassima Hussein Schbley

Faculty Publications

To investigate the incidence and impact of urinary incontinence (UI) and pain on health related quality of life (HRQOL) for postpartum Bangladeshi women. Methods: Prospective, cross sectional, correlational design (n=94) of postpartum Bangladeshi women, ages 18-44, with history of one or more obstetrical deliveries within the last three years. Subjects completed the Bengali version of the SF-36 and IIQ-7. Results: UI incidence was reported at 45% (n=39/86) total, 44% CS (n=18/41), and 47% (n=21/45) for NVD. IIQ-7 scores and UI presence showed strong correlations in both CS (rho=.729, 84, p<.001) and NVD (rho=.874, 84, p<.001). The highest impact of UI was reported in the CS group. One sample t-test reported significant differences for the sample when compared with the age equivalent norms for the SF-36 domain and component scores (p =.05-.001). Significant differences in HRQOL were reported for women with "pelvic/abdominal pain" and "UI" compared to those without "pain" or without "UI" and strong inverse correlations (rho=.597-.853) were reported for subjects with "pain" on the SF-36 domains (p=.001). The Mixed Birth Mode (MBM) group (n=8) reported UI incidence at 74% (n= 6/8), and pelvic/abdominal pain at 63% (n=5/8). Conclusion: No significant difference was found in UI and HRQOL measures by birth mode. However, pelvic, abdominal pain, and UI impact were found to be significant and inversely correlated to HRQOL. A significant decrease in HRQOL was reported compared to age related norm scores. Future research should address pelvic and abdominal pain and "mixed birth mode" impact on QOL and UI.

Progress In A Social Work Writing Course: Self-Efficacy, Course Objectives, And Skills, Jane D. Woody, Mary G. Zeleny, Henry J. D'Souza, Jeanette Harder, Jacqueline Reiser, P.Eter Szto

Social Work Faculty Publications

Although instructors express concerns about social work students’ writing skills, little research has been conducted. One remedy is a social work-focused writing course. This study assessed a required writing course with a sample of 49 baccalaureate students. From online pre- and post-test surveys, two student outcomes improved significantly: self-reported scores for writing self-efficacy and competence in course objectives. On-demand writing samples improved significantly based on anonymous rating by the course instructors; however, blind ratings found gains but not at a significant level. Improved outcomes were not associated with demographic or background characteristics. We discuss limitations of the study and implications …

The Impact Of Texting On Committed Romantic Relationships, Danielle M. Maurer Jan 2014

The Impact Of Texting On Committed Romantic Relationships, Danielle M. Maurer

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The availability and affordability of mobile phones has increased dramatically in the last decade and continues to increase. Short-message service (texting), a popular feature of the mobile phone, has become a widely accepted phenomenon in today's society, and is beginning to dominate the landscape of interpersonal communication, used as a primary medium in romantic and sexual correspondence. There is minimal academic research focusing on the effects of texting on communication and social behavior within romantic relationships; research is lacking with regard to how mobile phone communication changes throughout the romantic relationships. The current study explores how texting practices are related …

Responding To Infant Sleep-Related Crying : A Theoretical Exploration Of Caregiver Response From Attachment And Object Relations Perspectives, Casey L. Zandoná Jan 2014

Responding To Infant Sleep-Related Crying : A Theoretical Exploration Of Caregiver Response From Attachment And Object Relations Perspectives, Casey L. Zandoná

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

How to respond to infant sleep-related crying is a ripe debate in much of the current parenting literature. This theoretical thesis explores how certain caregiver responses affect infants' psychological development. Particular attention is paid to the popular sleep-training technique—letting a baby "Cry It Out"—as there is an alarming lack of consideration within empirical and theoretical literature of the psychological impact of this parenting strategy on an infant. This thesis begins with an overview of current empirical research on infant sleep and crying behavior, and proceeds to include an in-depth look at attachment and object relations (mostly Winnicottian) theories, specifically in …

The Cultural Influences Which Motivate Countertransference For The Collectivist-Oriented Clinician Working With Clients In The United States, Janet Namono Jan 2014

The Cultural Influences Which Motivate Countertransference For The Collectivist-Oriented Clinician Working With Clients In The United States, Janet Namono

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical thesis explores the phenomenon of the collectivist-oriented clinician and the cultural influences that motivate countertransference while working with clients in the United States. This project explores the cultural influence of difference in the cultural orientations of the clinician, and the clients' in two internship placements as contexts of the work in the United States. The cultural experiences in the dyad are related to differences in the issues of sense of self, differentiation, separation-individuation, autonomy, and self-determination. In particular, these influencing cultural differences are analyzed through structural drive theory and relational theory. Ethnocultural countertransference literature (Comas-Diaz and Jacobsen) informing …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore the subjective experience of the professionals in the Denver/Boulder area working with emotional abuse that occurs between children and their caretakers and to examine the obstacles they experience to more effective prevention and intervention of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse is a widespread and damaging social problem that is often ignored or minimized by the legal system, the child welfare system and the mental health system (Doyle, 1997; Glaser, 2011; Marshall, 2012). This study interviewed 12 key informants from the mental health system, the child welfare system and the legal system and included …

An Investigation Of Unconscious Countertransference Disclosure, Constance M. Pasalis Jan 2014

An Investigation Of Unconscious Countertransference Disclosure, Constance M. Pasalis

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Unconscious countertransference disclosures (UCDs) are a unique kind of self-disclosure explored peripherally in the current literature. This exploratory study placed UCDs in the context of self-disclosure and countertransference as they have evolved conceptually over time. Thirteen participants, recruited through snowball sampling, responded to the focusing question: How do clinicians make meaning of unconscious countertransference disclosure? During a one-hour face to face interview participants responded to this question from the point of view of clinician and client. Consistent with what one might expect, participants attributed clients knowing what they had not consciously been told on a spectrum from the concrete (non-verbal …

A Historical Study Of The "Use-Of-Self" In Clinical Practice, Eva Tracy-Raeder

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the concept of the use-of-self in clinical practice through a historical lens, in order to clarify what is meant by the term, to illuminate the evolution of the concept, and to attempt to reconcile the perspectives of several theoretical approaches. Seven theoretical approaches were examined, they are presented in five sections. The first section examines the Classical Psychoanalytic Theory of Sigmund Freud. The second section examines expansions on and departures from the classical position and includes contributions made by Carl Jung and Carl Rogers. The third section highlights three postclassical theories which …

The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná Jan 2014

The Use Of Photography As A Clinical Tool In Social Work : A Theoretical Exploration Using Winnicottian And Jungian Lenses, André N. Zandoná

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In this theoretical study, the photographic process was examined as having the potential to be used as a psychodynamic clinical tool in social work. Psychodynamic theoretical concepts by Carl Jung and Donald W. Winnicott were examined as guiding principles that will allow clinicians to understand how photography can be useful as a means to understand one's internal experience as well as external relationship with the world. This body of work presented current and potential uses of the camera as an instrument in interpreting the world according to one's subjectivity. In addition to theoretical examination, this research study also presented real …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examined diverse trans* and gender non-conforming (TGNC) young adults' perceptions of medical and mental health providers and health care settings; and how TGNC perceptions influence or inhibit their level of comfort and willingness to access preventative and emergency services. The study aimed to extend knowledge and understanding of challenges faced by TGNC individuals and to inform health care providers on how they can become more effective in both their outreach and service provision to TGNC communities. Much of the current literature examining individuals with gender nonconforming identities focus on discrimination, limited access to health care, major health challenges, …

Promotion Of Environmental Engagement Through Positive Youth Development In Tanzania, Katherine Westfall Jan 2014

Promotion Of Environmental Engagement Through Positive Youth Development In Tanzania, Katherine Westfall

Honors Theses

With climate change and environmental degradation already having devastating effects on communities in sub-Saharan Africa, enhancing youth's commitment to the environment and mobilizing their pro-environmental action is increasingly urgent. In this study, we explored predictors of environmental commitment and action based on a model of positive youth development. We predicted that sociodemographics, self-efficacy, connection to nature, sense of community, and club participation would predict environmental commitment and action. Tanzanian youth (N = 959) from regions across the country completed self-report measures assessing these constructs. Using a series of logistic and hierarchical multiple regressions, we were able to predict statistically significant …

An Old Tool For A New Generation: Using The Star Power Simulation To Teach Social Inequality, Barbara Prince Jan 2014

An Old Tool For A New Generation: Using The Star Power Simulation To Teach Social Inequality, Barbara Prince

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Students today are unique. They are the first generation to be "growing up digital" and are distinctly different from their baby boomer parents. As a result, this net generation does not fit well within the passive nature of the standard format of classes. One technique, employed by a growing number of faculty within the field of teaching and learning, to facilitate experiential learning is the use of simulations. One example is the simulation Star Power, which simulates the use/abuse of power, stratification, and inequality. Simulations such as Star Power can be a vital tool for teaching core sociological concepts, including …
