Identity, Colonial Mentality, And Decolonizing The Mind : Exploring Narratives And Examining Mental Health Implications For Filipino Americans, Ashley M. Decena
Identity, Colonial Mentality, And Decolonizing The Mind : Exploring Narratives And Examining Mental Health Implications For Filipino Americans, Ashley M. Decena
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Colonial mentality is defined as the perception of ethnic and cultural inferiority and a form of internalized racial oppression. It is deemed a direct consequence of the Philippines' long history of colonialism. This empirical, qualitative study explored whether colonial mentality resonated with Filipino Americans who were born and raised in the United States. This study also investigated if and how the process of decolonization of the mind transpired within individuals. One way decolonization of the mind can be conceptualized is the process of understanding one's history to understand the present. Also examined was Filipino/Filipino American identity and how these perceptions …

Therapeutic Aspects Of Dance For Dancers Experiencing Life Adjustment Issues, Khanhsong V. Nguyen
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The following qualitative-interview based study explored the therapeutic benefits of dance training classes (i.e. ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop, etcetera) as reported by dancers who are currently in individual talk-therapy for life adjustment issues. Life adjustment issues are defined as, but are not limited to, loss of job, divorce, marital conflict, and gender issues. Using thematic coding, the researcher found that all participants reported that dance was therapeutic and/or mentally healing for life adjustment issues of mood disturbance (anxiety and depression), low selfesteem, eating disorders, medical diagnosis, and problems in personal relationships. Participants also reported that dance provided physical benefits, …
Maybe We Really Are What We Eat : Implications Of Nutrition And Mental Illness Research For Clinical Practice, Leslie H. Rosenberg
Maybe We Really Are What We Eat : Implications Of Nutrition And Mental Illness Research For Clinical Practice, Leslie H. Rosenberg
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
In light of our nation's growing obesity epidemic, this paper will explore the growing body of research indicating clear links between nutrition and mental health, and the implications for clinicians treating mental illness in chronically ill clients who are overweight or obese. I will analyze the intersection between nutrition and mental illness according to the concepts of motivational interviewing (MI) and Irwin Yalom's group therapy theory in order to inform social work practice with these adults. Medical professionals who tend to shoulder the responsibility of addressing diet concerns in mentally ill patients rarely have adequate time nor training to fully …
Why Activists Seek Psychotherapy, Collin B. Lee
Why Activists Seek Psychotherapy, Collin B. Lee
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study aimed to identify reasons why people who identify as activists seek psychotherapy. The literature on social movements supports the claim that activists are highly motivated individuals who seek to create meaning through work to promote social change, and as a result are exposed to a complex array of social forces that are institutional and interpersonal. As a collective social behavior, involvement in social movements allows activists to develop strong relationships with others while also becoming exposed to the risks of conflict and disapproval of others. Given that these relational factors and the nature of their organizing work …
Trauma, Criminalization, And Movements For Healing Justice : A Theoretical Study Of Relational Theory And Transformative Justice Interventions In The Treatment Of Juvenile Sexual Offending, Megan E. Shaughnessy-Mogill
Trauma, Criminalization, And Movements For Healing Justice : A Theoretical Study Of Relational Theory And Transformative Justice Interventions In The Treatment Of Juvenile Sexual Offending, Megan E. Shaughnessy-Mogill
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis explores the etiology and treatment of juvenile sexual offenders from the perspectives of psychoanalytic relational theory and the emerging grassroots theory of transformative justice, drawing together the often-disconnected spheres of the individual and the systemic in the study and treatment of child sexual abuse. This study traces the concepts of dissociation and reenactment to examine the role of unconscious traumatogenic phenomena and the apparent parallel process across the individual and systemic dimensions of juvenile sexual offending. Engaging two theories from outside the mainstream treatment model, this study asks what clinical understandings and treatment possibilities may be foreclosed …
Invisible Victims : The Effects Of Secondary And Vicarious Trauma On Milieu Staff Members, Jennifer K. Mello
Invisible Victims : The Effects Of Secondary And Vicarious Trauma On Milieu Staff Members, Jennifer K. Mello
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and Vicarious Trauma (VT) in non-clinically trained milieu staff members working in close collaboration with victims of trauma. This study also aimed to discover the extent to which these individuals experience these effects, and will hopefully help bridge the existing gap in the literature around VT and STS in non-clinically trained populations of helpers. In a study of 49 participants including milieu staff members from both inpatient and residential school settings, prevalence of PTSD symptomology as a result of Secondary Traumatic Stress was explored through the use …
Identity And Cultural Competency : Critical Race And Postmodern Perspective, Nathan N. Orians
Identity And Cultural Competency : Critical Race And Postmodern Perspective, Nathan N. Orians
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis explores how racism is unavoidable in social work because of the weight of systemic influences. It looks at how the use of cultural competency could be unethical, by using both critical race and postmodern theory. The use of critical race theory in thinking about cultural competency seems to allow for a passive acceptance of a system which has continued to be un-critical of its racist origins and assumptions. Furthermore the enacting of cultural competency through a postmodern view could at times be considered a micro aggression and as such unethical. This paper hopes that by acknowledging that …

Heavy Impact : The Experience Of Sustaining A Concussion As A College Athelete, Brittainy C. Johnson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was undertaken to determine the extent to which college athletes access mental health services after sustaining concussions and their experience surrounding their recovery process. Using semi-structured interviews with college-level athletes, the study found that all nine participants were required to seek medical attention following their injury, while none were required or encouraged to seek mental health services such as counseling. Other emerging themes included the experience of Post Concussion Syndrome symptoms by all participants, the stigma surrounding mental health, the need for alternative methods of treatment, and the need for structure and support through the recovery process. …

Pet Ownership And Perceived Stress In Social Work Students And Clinicians, Karen E. Acheson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine if social work clinicians and students who owned pets had lower rates of perceived stress than those who did not own pets. Secondly, did an owner's level of attachment to their pet play a role in the benefits they might gain in stress reduction due to pet ownership. A survey was sent to social work clinicians and students which included the Perceived Stress Scale and Lexington Attachment to Pet Scale. Forty-nine individuals responded. The findings of the research showed that pet owners reported significantly lower stress when compared to non pet owners, and stress …

Chinese American College Graduates In The Great Recession : An Exploratory Study, Rebecca D. Lee
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the ways in which the Great Recession has affected Chinese American, recent college graduates in their career development. The person-in-environment perspective of clinical social work was the foundation for this study: it was expected that the negative economic effects of the Great Recession have changed the occupational landscape for Chinese American recent college graduates, which has had an effect on their mental health and personal relationships. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling, and 12 individuals were interviewed regarding their career-related experiences after graduation. All participants identified as Chinese American and graduated …
"Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" : The Cell Phone And The Therapeutic Relationship, Rachel C. Gordon
"Don't Call Us, We'll Call You" : The Cell Phone And The Therapeutic Relationship, Rachel C. Gordon
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study examines the impact of both clinician and client use of cell phone on the therapeutic relationship. Eighteen one-hour interviews were held with clinicians who either used cell phones as tools in their therapy practice or who had clients who used them. Different ways in which clinicians used cell phones as interventions and tools in therapy as well as the varied ways in which clients brought cell phones into therapy to discuss their own lives were examined. Open-ended questions included: affects on the real relationship, the working alliance, countertransference experience, talking on the phone, phone coaching, text messaging, …

Who Does What? : Navigating Gender Roles In Early Parenthood, Annabel L. Lane
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explores gender role dynamics between couples in early years of parenthood. Forty-nine individuals in heterosexual couple relationships participated in phone interviews where they described their experiences making decisions and resolving conflict with their partners about the division of family labor. The families in this study had participated in the Supporting Father Involvement Project in Alberta, Canada. Findings of this study confirm existing research that gender roles become more traditional among heterosexual couples after parenthood, with mothers carrying out the majority of household tasks. Participants described a complex and challenging set of internal and external factors that were …

The Adaptation Of Trauma Therapies For Use With Children And Adolescents Diagnosed On The Autism Spectrum : A Qualitative Study, Benjamin A. Katz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was undertaken to explore the issue of the treatment of trauma in children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis. Specifically this study sought to explore two specific questions: are there any specific modalities of treatment that are best suited for treating trauma in children and adolescents with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum, and are there any patterns in the kinds of adaptations to treatment that need to be made to make treatment effective across different kinds of therapeutic interventions? Using semi-structured interviews with seven licensed clinicians who have treated trauma in children and adolescents …
Sheriffs' Use Of Restraints For Transports Of Individuals On "Involuntary Status" To Psychiatric Facilities For Care, Catherine M. Reed
Sheriffs' Use Of Restraints For Transports Of Individuals On "Involuntary Status" To Psychiatric Facilities For Care, Catherine M. Reed
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored what factors most influence Vermont sheriffs' decision-making regarding the use of mechanical restraints for the transports of individuals on 'involuntary status' to psychiatric facilities for care. It also examined what initiatives contributed to a marked and progressively downward-trending statewide rate of restraint use since 2012. Six county Sheriffs and 47 deputies from nine of 14 counties completed a mixedmethods survey that inquired about officer, departmental, policy, resource, and training factors. As each of Vermont's Sheriffs sets his own departmental policy regarding use of restraints this study paid particular attention to how officers' available level of discretion interacted …
Beyond Machismo : A Theoretical Exploration Of Domestic Violence In Latino Men, Daniela Sanchez
Beyond Machismo : A Theoretical Exploration Of Domestic Violence In Latino Men, Daniela Sanchez
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis explores psychodynamic explanations for differing rates of domestic violence (DV) between Latino men born in the U.S. and Latino men who immigrated to the U.S. This study specifically focuses on DV in the form of intimate terrorism. Critical race theory and Klein's object relations theory are applied to Dr. Christauria G. Welland's case of Lorenzo to demonstrate how racism influences internal and interpersonal dynamics in DV relationships. The author encourages social workers to apply critical race theory to traditional psychodynamic theories for a more comprehensive case formulation, especially when working with Latino clients involved in a DV …
Working With Gender Nonconforming Children : Why Does The Debate Continue?, Gillian A. Harvey
Working With Gender Nonconforming Children : Why Does The Debate Continue?, Gillian A. Harvey
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This original empirical study explored why consensus about best practice models for working with gender nonconforming children and their families has not been reached, and identified practice frameworks available to assist clinical social workers in meeting the social and emotional needs of this vulnerable population. The experience and perspectives of 14 Canadian gender identity experts were elicited through self-developed, semi-structured interviews composed of questions that encouraged professionals to reflect on their opinion as to why the debate about how to best respond continues, as well as, their philosophical and theoretical approach to caring for gender nonconforming children and their families. …

It's Common (But We Don't Talk About It) : How Straight Male Use Of Gay Male Porn Influences Acts, Identities, And Desire, Solomon Z. Traurig
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was conducted to determine what potential pornography might hold as a productive space for exploring desire and identity, in addition to influencing sexual behaviors or preferences outside of pornography use. Specifically, this research set out to understand how and why individuals may watch pornography that represents identities or acts that are not considered to be in alignment with their stated or felt sexual orientation. In-person semistructured interviews were conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area, with 11 straight- or formerly straight-identified men. From there, interview data was organized and coded with thematic analysis. Although the findings were …
Barriers To Obstetric Fistula Treatment In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Benjamin Bellows, Rachel Bach, Zoe Baker, Charlotte E. Warren
Barriers To Obstetric Fistula Treatment In Low-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Benjamin Bellows, Rachel Bach, Zoe Baker, Charlotte E. Warren
Reproductive Health
Obstetric fistula is a maternal morbidity condition that occurs in some low-income countries and is caused by prolonged obstructed labor that results in a hole between the vagina and the bladder or rectum through which urine or feces leak. Unrepaired fistula can lead to lifelong ostracism, stigma, and shame. Obstetric fistula is preventable and treatable, but women in these countries experience delays in seeking repair due to a number of factors including awareness of their condition as well as the potential for treatment, resources necessary for seeking care, lack of skilled fistula surgeons, and long hospital waiting times. UNFPA estimates …
Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair
Alcohol Use, Misuse, And Abuse Among Nursing Students: A Photovoice Study, Julie Mcculloh Nair
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Existing knowledge about alcohol misuse and abuse and nursing students is founded upon studies conducted primarily in the 1980's and 1990's, thus raising questions as to its relevance in 2014. The patterns of alcohol use and other substances over the past 30 years by students raise several questions concerning this phenomenon, which needs further explanation beyond just the high stress and demands of nursing education. The literature was examined first to identify existing knowledge on alcohol misuse and abuse among nursing students. From this review, we concluded that policy plays a vital role in this issue. Therefore, we next reviewed …

Pastoral Attitudes That Predict Numerical Church Growth, David R. Dunaetz, Kenneth E. Priddy
Pastoral Attitudes That Predict Numerical Church Growth, David R. Dunaetz, Kenneth E. Priddy
Selected Faculty Publications
The attitudes of 92 head pastors were measured concerning 20 ministry-relevant ideas and practices, as well as information about their church’s present numerical growth. A statistical analysis found four pastoral attitudes that predict positive or negative numerical church growth. Positive predictors of numerical church growth were strong beliefs that 1) personal and corporate prayer are important and 2) transfer growth is an indicator of congregational health. Negative predictors of numerical church growth were strong beliefs in 1) the importance of preaching and 2) the importance of outreach to the community. The practical implications of these findings are discussed in light …
Toward A Framework For Levels Of Robot Autonomy In Human-Robot Interaction, Jenay Beer, A. D. Fisk, W. A. Rogers
Toward A Framework For Levels Of Robot Autonomy In Human-Robot Interaction, Jenay Beer, A. D. Fisk, W. A. Rogers
Faculty Publications
Autonomy is a critical construct related to human-robot interaction (HRI) and varies widely across robot platforms. Levels of robot autonomy (LORA), ranging from teleoperation to fully autonomous systems, influence the way in which humans and robots interact with one another. Thus, there is a need to understand HRI by identifying variables that influence—and are influenced by—robot autonomy. Our overarching goal is to develop a framework for LORA in HRI. To reach this goal, our framework draws links between HRI and human-automation interaction, a field with a long history of studying and understanding human-related variables. The construct of autonomy is reviewed …
A Mixed Methods Evaluation Of The Coastal Roots Program, Jenna Lachenaye
A Mixed Methods Evaluation Of The Coastal Roots Program, Jenna Lachenaye
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Few evaluation-based studies of the LSU Coastal Roots™ program have been conducted over the 14-year life of the project. Teacher participant numbers and the scope of the program have grown since its inception, changing the face and shape of the program in each manifestation. A goal free approach to a mixed methods evaluation was employed to meet the exploratory nature of the investigation and to remain open to the myriad of possibilities within the program as it exists today. The exploratory sequential design employed qualitative methods in the early stages of the project through the collection and analysis of interview …
Toward A Northern Irish Pastoral: Reading The Rural In Seamus Heaney And Paul Muldoon, Stephanie Jean Osburn Krassenstein
Toward A Northern Irish Pastoral: Reading The Rural In Seamus Heaney And Paul Muldoon, Stephanie Jean Osburn Krassenstein
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation is three-fold: to mount a comparison of Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon, arguing that the two poets actually share much in common, particularly in their use of the pastoral mode; to argue that the pastoral mode offers a provocative, even radical platform for postcolonial writing and thinking; and to argue that reading Heaney and Muldoon, and Ireland in general, as postcolonial offers much for critics and scholars. This project looks particularly at Heaney’s use of gender in landscape to argue that Heaney relies on an abject pastoral mode, one which is dominated by excess fertility …

Does Personality Play A Role In Computer Information Systems Performance?, S.E. Kruck, Patricia Sendall, Wendy Ceccucci, Alan Peslak, Scott Hunsinger
Management Faculty Publications
This study represents an analysis of student performance in computer information systems (CIS) courses and the potential influence of Jungian personality traits on academic success in CIS courses. For this study, academic success is measured by grades achieved. The MBTI measurement scale was self-analyzed by students in CIS courses from fall 2008 through spring 2013. The data showed a statistically significant correlation between various personality dichotomies of the type (Extraversion-Introversion, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, and JudgingPerceiving) and higher grades scores. The results of this study indicate that course performance of groups of students are different relative to their personality type. In this …
