Nurses' Perceptions Of Ethical Issues In An Academic Hospital Setting, Linda E. Jensen, Christine Swanson

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Monday, July 28, 2014:

Purpose: Today's healthcare organizations are becoming increasingly accountable for the many ethical issues and challenges that have arisen as a result of corporate management, technological advances, reproduction issues, genetic healthcare, and the demands of cost containment affecting the delivery of safe and effective cares (Cooper, 2002). With such changes and challenges in the healthcare system, studies have found that the once traditional ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, and justice provided by today's healthcare professionals are being severely tested (Cooper, 2002, p. 331). Health-information technology, such as electronic health records, has the potential to facilitate the assessment of pain through the incorporation of …

This study identifies five Culturally Competent Common Core Practices that can provide anchors for informing the instructional process in culturally contextualized ways. The Delphi study shows that the educator’s self-awareness fosters the level of cognitive consciousness that facilitates effect interaction with diverse populations.

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Background: The factor structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been extensively studied in Western countries. Some studies have assessed its factor structure in Asia (China, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia), but few have directly assessed the factor structure of PTSD in an Indian adult sample. Furthermore, in a largely patriarchal society in India with strong gender roles, it becomes imperative to assess the association between the factors of PTSD and gender.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to assess the factor structure of PTSD in an Indian sample of trauma survivors based on prevailing models of PTSD defined …

House Of Cards: The Academic Library Media Center In The Era Of Streaming Video, Rachel King

Brooklyn Library Faculty Publications

In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.

Communicatively Restricted Organizational Stress (Cros) I: Conceptualization And Overview, Justin P. Boren, Alice E. Veksler

Communication

In this article, we conceptualized a new organizational variable, Communicatively Restricted Organizational Stress (CROS). CROS is a perceived inability to communicate about a particular stressor and functions to exacerbate negative outcomes related to the appraisal of that stressor. To aid in our conceptualization, we reviewed extant literature on organizational stress and social support. We also collected open-ended data from a national sample of 354 workers. The responses to these questions lead us to specific themes about the nature and function of CROS. Finally, we propose a conceptual conditional process model with two primary propositions: (a) An organizational member who reports …

Research Brief: "Fathering After Military Deployment: Parenting Challenges And Goals Of Fathers Of Young Children", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study was conducted in conjunction with the STRoNG Military Families program, and consisted of interviews with fathers of young children. It was found that deployed fathers shared similar issues upon reintegration, and many were interested in connecting with other deployed fathers to learn from their parenting experiences. Future research recommended highlighting that this sample was exclusively male and predominantly white, and acknowledged that the demographics of future studies should be expanded to include women and people of color. Likewise, a greater sample size from other armed forces branches is needed.

Carsey Publications

This fact sheet uses data from a survey of Bakersville, Beech Street, and Gossler Park residents in Manchester, New Hampshire, to draw attention to the current state of connectedness, trust, and perceptions of the local environment in these three neighborhoods. Author Justin Young finds that residents of these neighborhoods report that they generally feel safe during the day, that they are comfortable reporting crimes to the police, and that they are hopeful that if a child was hurt or scared, there would be a trustworthy adult nearby to help. Only about half of respondents in these neighborhoods felt there was …
