Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun Nov 2014

Parental Involvement During Adolescence And Contraceptive Use In College, Caroline Payne Purvis, Rosemary V. Barnett, Larry Forthun

Journal of Adolescent and Family Health

The current study aimed to explore the relationships between parental involvement during adolescence on sexual behaviors among college students. Research has shown that parental involvement decreases as students move from high school to college, but the impact that parents had on their students while in high school continues into college. It is important to determine if one factor relating to the number of sexual partners, sexual activity, and contraceptive use is parental involvement during adolescence. After approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), an online survey using Survey Monkey was administered to a convenience sample of undergraduate students in a …

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

The state and federal push to transition Medicaid residents from nursing homes to the community calls for effective discharge strategies targeted to residents’ diverse needs. This exploratory, mixed-methods study utilized the Minimum Data Set to describe demographics, health characteristics, and transition patterns of Kansas Medicaid residents with mental health diagnoses who were discharged from nursing homes from 2005 to 2008. Discharged residents (n = 720) had multiple comorbidities, and more than half remained in the community following their first nursing home event. In-depth interviews with nursing home staff (n = 11) explored successful discharge strategies. Successful strategies support …

Is Couple And Relationship Education Effective For Lower Income Participants? A Meta-Analytic Study, Alan J. Hawkins, Sage E. Erickson

Faculty Publications

The negative effects of family instability on children and adults have captured the attention of legislators and policymakers wondering if something could be done to help at-risk couples form and sustain healthy relationships and marriages. For a decade now, public funds have supported grants to provide couple and relationship education (CRE) to lower income individuals and couples. This meta-analytic study reviewed 38 studies (with 47 independent samples) assessing the effectiveness of CRE for lower income couples (defined as more than two-thirds of the sample below twice the poverty level) in an attempt to form current policy debates. Overall effect sizes …

Hearing The Patient Voice: Using Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment To Understand Teens With Cystic Fibrosis, Susan Horky Lscw, Laura E. Sherman Msw, Julie Polvinen, Michael Rich Md

Patient Experience Journal

This qualitative study asked two questions: 1) How do teens with cystic fibrosis (CF) feel about their treatments; and 2) What factors lead teens to adhere, or not adhere, to treatments. To answer these questions we used an innovative approach (Video Intervention/Prevention Assessment or VIA), to learn about the experiences of teens with CF. We loaned video camcorders to teens with CF and asked them to create visual narratives of their lives. Researchers logged and coded videotapes, identifying themes that arose from the material. A primary theme was “Doctors don’t understand.” Participants also highlighted the value of routines and parental …

The Role Of School Nurses And Chronic Illness, Melonie Ruiz

Theses and Dissertations

With new technological developments, children who may not have survived birth or infancy are now living longer and healthier lives. These advances can be positive and negative to these children. Although the child has survived, they have developed chronic illnesses due to these advances. These conditions they must live with everyday and depending on how severe the illness may be, they will impact the child's social and educational life. The role of the school nurse should be to ease the stresses that the illness is having on the child. There are many techniques that have been shown to help reduce …

A Model Testing On Health Literacy, Knowledge About Vitamin D, And Actual Behavior In Sunlight Exposure, Angela Yee Man Leung

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Friday, July 25, 2014:

Purpose: To test whether health literacy is associated with actual sunlight exposure behavior, we interviewed 648 Chinese adults aged 65 years or older.

Methods: Using the information-motivation-behavioral skills model and structural equation modeling, we tested how health literacy was associated with the complex relationship among knowledge about vitamin D, attitudes towards sunlight exposure, doctor recommendations regarding sunlight exposure, and actual sunlight exposure behavior. Health literacy was directly associated with sunlight exposure (beta = .20, p < .01). Indirect relationships also existed between knowledge and sunlight exposure through health literacy (beta = .46, p < .001) and between attitudes and sunlight exposure through health literacy (beta = -.12, p < .05).

Results: The model had good fit (chi-square/df = 2.79; RMSEA = .053, p = .346; CFI = .95; …

The Carers Of People With Dementia In The Sub-Acute Facility: A Qualitative Study, Allison Fiona Williams, Kimberley Crawford, Melissa Bloomer, Robin Digby

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Saturday, July 26, 2014:

Purpose: When a person with dementia is receiving in-hospital treatment, transitioning through the hospital system and subsequently assessed as requiring residential care, family caregivers may feel overwhelmed and disempowered by the healthcare system (Haesler et al. 2010). There is a danger that the caregiver will feel excluded from decision-making and uncertain about their role as key provider of care for their relative (Efraimsson et al.2006). Although there is a growing body of literature exploring family involvement in the care of persons with dementia in Australia and internationally, minimal research has been conducted on …
