Collaborative Leadership: Jane Addams And Her Circle Of Friends, Sheila V. Davies Jan 2014

Collaborative Leadership: Jane Addams And Her Circle Of Friends, Sheila V. Davies

Theses and Graduate Projects

Collaboration and collaborative leadership are terms used often in current leadership language. Whether in private or public enterprises, collaboration has become a "catch word" that elicits ideas of shared ownership and effective problem solving. Collaborative leadership could be a "stand alone" leadership style or it could incorporate other leadership styles to prove most effective. The manner in which it is used depends, in part, on who is using it and for what purpose. Jane Addams, a progressive leader in the early twentieth century, used collaborative leadership effectively in her social change efforts. Together with Julia Lathrop, Florence Kelley, Alice Hamilton …

Creation Of Care Coordination Team, Linda Peterson Jan 2014

Creation Of Care Coordination Team, Linda Peterson

Theses and Graduate Projects

Healthcare in the United States is fragmented and costly. Care coordination positively impacts healthcare cost and quality in healthcare systems. Case managers, social workers, and community health workers create health care teams in a health care home model. A team approach, formed by relationships built from collaboration, communication, and application of Complexity Theory, produces these outcomes. Relational coordination based on shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect creates the framework from which to establish a team. Watson's Caring Science theory provides the conceptual framework to support the connectedness that occurs within a team approach. Creating a collaborative team of case …

Trauma Informed Nursing Care For Women Who Are Marginalized: An Educational Workshop, Jenna Fadlalla Jan 2014

Trauma Informed Nursing Care For Women Who Are Marginalized: An Educational Workshop, Jenna Fadlalla

Theses and Graduate Projects

Traumatic events profoundly affect both the physical and emotional health of a woman who endures the event. Gender, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic disparities in rates of trauma exist showing that women who are marginalized are at a higher risk for trauma. Nurses are privileged to provide care for these women in their greatest times of need, yet despite the intimate relationship between nurses and their patients, trauma is a topic that remains largely unaddressed by the field of nursing. Because trauma can have such a profound effect on health, it is essential for nurses of all specialties and at all …

Browse All Undergraduate research

The views of health professionals are an important and often overlooked aspect of changes in health policy. This paper examines the impact of healthcare reform on the medical professionals of Nicaragua over the last 40 years. First, the historical context of Nicaraguan healthcare is discussed. This history is presented as both an outgrowth of and a reaction to Nicaragua’s changing political environment. The changes in health policy over this time period are then examined through the lens of medical professionals. Several sub-topics are investigated including the relationship between perceptions of health professionals and political ideology, the inability of the younger …

Key Attitudinal Competences For Early Childhood Practitioners: Exploring European Approaches To Teaching And Learning, Verity Campbell Barr, Jan Georgeson Jan 2014

Key Attitudinal Competences For Early Childhood Practitioners: Exploring European Approaches To Teaching And Learning, Verity Campbell Barr, Jan Georgeson

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

The European Key Competences for Lifelong Learning provide a European-level reference tool for education providers, including Higher Education institutions, to focus national- and European-level efforts to support students towards personal fulfillment, social inclusion, active citizenship and employability in a knowledge-based society. The European Lifelong Learning Programme defines competences as:“a combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes appropriate to the context” (European Commission, 2007: 3).Whilst not wishing to undermine the importance of knowledge and skills, we are interested in how to develop attitudes for the particular context of early childhood practice. Within Europe there is a complex array of terminology for those …

The Functions Of The Executive At 75: An Invitation To Reconsider A Timeless Classic, Paul C. Godfrey, Joseph T. Mahoney Jan 2014

The Functions Of The Executive At 75: An Invitation To Reconsider A Timeless Classic, Paul C. Godfrey, Joseph T. Mahoney

Faculty Publications

The year 2013 marks the 75th anniversary of the publication of Chester I. Barnard’s classic, The Functions of the Executive, a groundbreaking contribution to management theory. We maintain that Barnard’s work provides a valuable perspective on the causes and potential solutions to challenges facing capitalism, business, and management consequent to the scandals and financial crises of the early 21st century. We believe Barnard would see a systemic failure of the moral dimension of organization as a driver of these crises, and that management theory and practice need to focus on both the science and the aesthetics of management. We look …

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb Jan 2014

Growing Taller: The Role Of Empathy And Acceptance In Building Up Followers, Jae Webb

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

While unable to agree on many of the subtle points of what leadership is or is not, many scholars define leadership as the influence of one person over another person or persons with the impetus of completing a goal or objective (Northouse 2010; Chemers 2014; Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House 2004). Two concepts are predominate in this understanding of leadership. One is the objective of accomplishing tasks; the other is the presence of power or influence in the relationship between a leader and her or his followers. The latter sets the stage for the focus of this paper, the examination and …

A Study Of Self-Concept In At-Risk Middle School Children Related To Behavior And Academic Performance, Tara Wade Franklin Jan 2014

A Study Of Self-Concept In At-Risk Middle School Children Related To Behavior And Academic Performance, Tara Wade Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors that are associated with the development of self-concept and how self-concept influences or interacts with academic performance and behavior. This research study asked two questions: (1) what assists in the development of self-concept, and (2) how does self-concept impact academic performance and behavior in at-risk middle school students? Using evidence-based research, parental involvement, gender, and ethnicity were selected as key factors associated with the development of self-concept in adolescence. This study proposed that students with high self-concept would have positive academic and behavioral performance. Consequently, students with low self-concept would …

Statistical Applications For The Prediction Of White Hispanic Breast Cancer Survival, Hafiz Mohammad Rafiqullah Khan, Anshul Saxena, Kemesha Gabbidon, Elizabeth Ross, Alice Shrestha

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Background: The ability to predict the survival time of breast cancer patients is important because of the potential high morbidity and mortality associated with the disease. To develop a predictive inference for determining the survival of breast cancer patients, we applied a novel Bayesian method. In this paper, we propose the development of a databased statistical probability model and application of the Bayesian method to predict future survival times for White Hispanic female breast cancer patients, diagnosed in the US during 1973-2009. Materials and Methods: A stratified random sample of White Hispanic female patient survival data was selected from the …

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Background: Statistical methods are very important to precisely measure breast cancer patient survival times for healthcare management. Previous studies considered basic statistics to measure survival times without incorporating statistical modeling strategies. The objective of this study was to develop a data-based statistical probability model from the female breast cancer patients’ survival times by using the Bayesian approach to predict future inferences of survival times. Materials and Methods: A random sample of 500 female patients was selected from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results cancer registry database. For goodness of fit, the standard model building criteria were used. The Bayesian approach …

Evaluation Of A Memory Book Intervention With Orphaned Children In South Africa, Barbara J. Braband, Tamara Faris, Kaye Wilson-Anderson

Faculty Publications - College of Nursing

The purpose of this collaborative research study was to evaluate the use of the Memory Book intervention for orphaned children's grief and loss recovery. A qualitative phenomenological approach was implemented to evaluate the Memory Book intervention with orphaned children at two children's homes in South Africa. Study findings support the ability of children to work through loss and grief when they are assisted in preserving and telling their story. The Memory Book intervention assists children to chronicle their lives and demonstrates the potential to guide future interventions by care providers and nurses in this context.

Trauma Exposure, Posttraumatic Stress, And Depression In A Community Sample Of First-Time Mothers, Mickey Sperlich Jan 2014

Trauma Exposure, Posttraumatic Stress, And Depression In A Community Sample Of First-Time Mothers, Mickey Sperlich

Wayne State University Dissertations

The adverse effects of posttraumatic stress and depression have separately been well-documented in the perinatal mental health literature. However, few studies have considered the comorbidity between trauma, posttraumatic stress and depression. This dissertation study brings attention to this comorbidity and explores implications of recent changes to diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder related to the ability to predict postpartum depression and impairments in mother/infant bonding. Following a conceptual framework which outlines the effects of violence and trauma on adverse childbearing outcomes, hypotheses were that many women with depression in pregnancy would endorse trauma and would be at risk for subthreshold …
