Understanding The Academic And Social Experience Of A Transfer Student At A Small, Midwest, Residential Institution, Bryce Colin Watkins
Understanding The Academic And Social Experience Of A Transfer Student At A Small, Midwest, Residential Institution, Bryce Colin Watkins
Master of Arts in Higher Education (MAHE) Theses
Transfer students often struggle to become engaged and involved in higher education. Research is clear that academic and social engagement in transfer students is lower than non-transfer (native) students (Kuh, 2003; Townsend, 2008). Furthermore, literature emphasizes the importance students being engaged and involved (Astin, 1984; Kuh, 2001). The present study connected the theories of engagement and involvement to the framework of student departure (Tinto, 1988) to understand how engagement and involvement fit in academic and social integration. The study attempted to understand how transfer students engage academically and socially at a small, Midwest, residential institution. Practically, the research combined an …

Journal Articles
Objective: Police officers' decisions and behaviors are impacted by the neighborhood context in which police encounters occur. For example, officers may use greater force and be more likely to make arrests in disadvantaged neighborhoods. We examined whether neighborhood characteristics influence police encounters with individuals suspected to have a serious mental illness, addictive disorder, or developmental disability. Method: We obtained data on 916 encounters from 166 officers in six jurisdictions in Georgia, USA and abstracted geographical data pertaining to the location of these encounters from United States Decennial Census data. Encounters were nested within 163 census tracts. Officer-reported data covered general …
Occupational Socialization’S Role In Forensic Psychologists’ Objectivity, Tess M. S. Neal, Stanley L. Brodsky
Occupational Socialization’S Role In Forensic Psychologists’ Objectivity, Tess M. S. Neal, Stanley L. Brodsky
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
This report integrated quantitative and qualitative methods across two studies to compile descriptive information about forensic psychologists’ occupational socialization and its relation to objectivity. After interviewing 20 board-certified forensic psychologists, we surveyed 334 forensic psychologists about their socialization into the field. Results indicated that occupational socialization, including socialization about objectivity, varied widely across time and situation as the field developed. Three hypotheses regarding occupational socialization were supported. It was positively associated with years of experience, belief in one’s ability to be objective, and endorsement of the usefulness of various bias correction strategies. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

The Lived Career Experiences Of Professional Academic Advisors Who Went On To Earn Doctoral Degrees In Highereducation Administration, Alison K. Rynearson
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to examine the lived career experiences of professional academic advisors who went on to earn a doctoral degree in higherEducation administration. When undergraduate students consider various majors, they often wonder "What can I do with a major in this area? What are my career options?" Such is the case with professional academic advisors who are considering a doctoral degree in higherEducation administration. Because of a lack of literature, advisors considering the doctoral option may seek out or may be referred to others like them who have accomplished this goal. A connection with role models …

Helping Children Find A Home That Offers Safety, Stability, And Love, D'Nique Melissa Stevens
Social Work Theses
The researcher wanted to look closely to see if preferences of adoptive parents, such as a particular race, age, or gender of the adoptee, helped or hindered the process of adoption. Gathering research, based on previous studies, the researcher was able to compare and contrast, to see if there are any patterns regarding adoptive parent preferences. There was a hole in the literature in regards to the preference of gender. This was a quantitative descriptive study completed by Providence College students, using a Likert-like style instrument. The main findings in the research was the statistically significant relationship of the values …
The Impact Of Partner Support In Abortion, Amy Gentile
The Impact Of Partner Support In Abortion, Amy Gentile
Social Work Theses
This quantitative, relational study aimed to examine whether there was a significant relationship between mental health of the female post-abortion and partner support both during and after abortion. A review of the literature indicates that many women do not suffer psychological trauma post-abortion and a large majority of women who have abortions report feeling supported by the prospective father. However, no research has examined if these two groups are in fact one in the same. One hundred forty-three questionnaires were collected on a college campus to measure respondent’s predictions of partner support and emotional well being post-abortion. Results indicate a …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In Double Exile: A Memoir examines the life of a family of Ghanaian immigrants and their journeys of acculturation, and the impact of the father's spiraling mental health issues on his family. Through the eyes of their daughter, this thesis briefly explores their lives on the right side of the Atlantic, as medical professionals, and then focuses on the life of their daughter born in America on the left side of the Atlantic. As novelist Georges Simenon has said, "I am at home everywhere, and nowhere. I am never a stranger and I never quite belong." This memoir explores this …

This study addressed whether psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatment of depressed HIV+ women met standards defined in the best practice literature, and tested hypothesized predictors of standard-concordant care. 1,352 HIV-positive women in the multi-center Women's Interagency HIV Study were queried about depressive symptoms and mental health service utilization using standards published by the American Psychiatric Association and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to define adequate depression treatment. We identified those who: (1) reported clinically significant depressive symptoms (CSDS) using Centers for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale scores of a parts per thousand yen16; or (2) had lifetime diagnoses of major depressive …
A Test Of Spielberger’S State-Trait Theory Of Anger With Adolescents: Five Hypotheses, Colleen Quinn, David Rollock, Scott R. Vrana
A Test Of Spielberger’S State-Trait Theory Of Anger With Adolescents: Five Hypotheses, Colleen Quinn, David Rollock, Scott R. Vrana
Psychology Publications
Spielberger’s state-trait theory of anger was investigated in adolescents (n = 201, ages 10-18, 53% African American, 47% European American, 48% female) using Deffenbacher’s five hypotheses formulated to test the theory in adults. Self-reported experience, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) responses to anger provoking imagery scripts found strong support for the application of this theory to adolescents. Compared to the low trait anger (LTA) group, adolescents with high trait anger (HTA) produced increased HR, SBP and DBP, and greater self-report of anger to anger imagery (intensity hypothesis) but not greater self-report or cardiovascular …

Simulation Collaboration: Will Screen Capture Change Attitudes?, Jeffrey Carmack
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
The ongoing call for interprofessional education with healthcare providers who routinely work together has largely gone unanswered. Parallel to this call, a large number of nursing programs across the United States exist in a stand-alone setting. These programs are unattached to a school of medicine. This creates barriers including a lack of access to physicians and lack of funding to hire medical staff as embedded participants. At the same time, aging nursing faculty, increasing enrollment, and decreasing clinical facility availability create an increased need to use simulation-learning environments to continue to maintain existing capacity in nursing programs. This project used …

Best Practices In Clinical Supervision: Evolution Of A Counseling Specialty, L. Dianne Borders, Harriet L. Glosoff, Laura A. Welfare, Danica G. Hays, Lorraine Dekruyf, Delini M. Fernando, Betsy Page
Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
A number of developments have marked the evolution of clinical supervision as a separate specialty since publication of the Standards for Counseling Supervisors in 1990, including accreditation and counselor licensure standards, supervisor credentials, and research on supervision practice and supervisor training, nationally and internationally. Such developments culminated in the development of a statement of Supervision Best Practices Guidelines. The Guidelines are described, followed by suggestions for their implementation and further evolution through research.
