Black History Month Offers Opportunity To Examine Christian Heritage, Office Of University Communications
Black History Month Offers Opportunity To Examine Christian Heritage, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Black History Month offers an opportunity to reflect upon the significance of religion and the early church in Africa, which some historians believe goes back to the early days of Biblical history. Dr. Eddie Stepp, chair and associate professor of the Department of Religious Studies and Philosophy at Gardner-Webb University, says the roots of Christianity are much more African than European. “Although we don’t have many references to Africa in the New Testament, we do see the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter eight,” said Stepp.

Making Windows Into Men’S Souls: An Examination Of Theological Norms At Elizabethan Cambridge, John R. Parker
Making Windows Into Men’S Souls: An Examination Of Theological Norms At Elizabethan Cambridge, John R. Parker
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The nature of English religiosity that is both specific ideology and doctrine and how these were practiced in the adherent's day to day life, during the later part of the Tudor dynasty has been the subject of much debate and research. Due to the volume of work produced about this period it is necessary to differentiate between three categories: those works which are directly relevant to this examination, as they deal specifically with either the time or content of this essay, those which are useful to understanding the period directly preceding this examinations focus, and those which address subjects and …

A Scalar Comparison Of Motivations And Expectations Of Experience Within The Religious Tourism Market, Daniel H. Olsen
A Scalar Comparison Of Motivations And Expectations Of Experience Within The Religious Tourism Market, Daniel H. Olsen
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Academic studies on tourism market segmentation have decreased in scale over time, with the focus on tourist segmentation changing from segmenting the market as a whole to segmenting specific tourism niche markets. This change in scale can also be seen in how academics have attempted to segment the religious tourism market moving from discussions related to the pilgrim-tourist dichotomy to segmenting visitors based on religious affiliation to world regions and countries to specific religious activities such as religious festivals and infrastructural amenities such as hotels. In this paper the author, following Wall’s (1997) discussion of the spatial characteristics of tourist …
Mystics, Radicals, Sinners, And Saints: Freedom, Rebirth, And The American West, Brian King
Mystics, Radicals, Sinners, And Saints: Freedom, Rebirth, And The American West, Brian King
History ETDs
This dissertation explores the lives of John Muir, the Taos Society of Artists, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Everett Ruess, Edith Warner, and the Taos hippies who journeyed to the American West in search of freedom. In the Western setting, with its diverse yet distinctive and stunning terrain, these individuals felt that their mind or soul—not just their physical body—had been liberated. They felt reborn. In the grand Sierras, John Muir discovered that physical and spiritual freedoms were intertwined. The Taos Society of Artists and Mabel Dodge Luhan found their connection with the natural world in northern New Mexico where three cultures …

The Moral And Spiritual Heritage Of The United States: A Resource For Teachers, Karalee Flinders Jackman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This project was a historical investigation. It documents the moral and spiritual heritage of America which appears to have shifted dramatically between 1880 and 1920. Historical research designs can be quantitative and/ or qualitative in nature. While there are many branches of historical studies. this investigation followed that of “intellectual history.” Intellectual histories compliment the investigation of world perspectives. The evidence in this study demonstrates a radical change has occurred In the world view from that espoused by early American writers. The move has shifted from the sacred, toward the secular. Prospective teachers from Brigham Young University, who will teach …

Literature Of Bushidō: Loyalty, Honorable Death, And The Evolution Of The Samurai Ideal, David A. Coldren
Literature Of Bushidō: Loyalty, Honorable Death, And The Evolution Of The Samurai Ideal, David A. Coldren
International ResearchScape Journal
This essay will address the evolution of the samurai warrior code (bushido), concentrating on its depiction in several prominent works of Japanese literature from 1185 to 1989. This essay will argue that rather than a concrete set of principles, bushido was actually a malleable set of romanticized qualities supposedly possessed by the samurai that were repeatedly adapted to a changing Japanese society in order to maintain a national identity predicated on the warrior class. Beginning with the introduction of the samurai through the Tale of the Heike, this essay will then proceed to discuss the blatant romanticization …

Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton
Syria And The Olympics: National Identity On An International Stage, Andrea L. Stanton
Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Since its 1946 independence, Syria has fielded a team for every summer Olympic competition except 1956, yet has won only three Olympic medals. In contrast with its smaller, higher-powered neighbor Lebanon, its participation at the Olympics has been consistent but limited, with the country making little impact internationally. Yet the history of Syria’s involvement with the Olympics reflects key elements of its political and social history: its ambitious but short-lived partnership with Egypt, the Baathist-supported promotion of women as athletes and head of the National Olympic Committee, and its commitment to participation in the vexed but ideologically important Pan-Arab Games. …
