The Roles Of Resilience And Perceived Discrimination In Sexual Minority Identity Integration, Peter Alexander Brown Aug 2014

The Roles Of Resilience And Perceived Discrimination In Sexual Minority Identity Integration, Peter Alexander Brown

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Although researchers and theorists have long moved away from public disclosure of sexual minority identity (i.e. coming out) as the theoretical apex of lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) identity development, it is still considered an important process of overall identity integration. Unfortunately public disclosure of sexual minority identity may be dependent upon the social environment in which disclosure occurs. Given the variable nature of social contexts, public disclosure across domains of social functioning may be problematic. Previous research has suggested that disclosure is in part more or less likely to occur based on individual appraisal of discriminative experiences (Meyer, 2013). …

Mental Health Impairment And Human Capital Acquisition: Underage Drinking As A Predictor Of Concomitant Alcohol Dependence And Poor Educational Attainment, Euchay Ngozi Horsman Aug 2014

Mental Health Impairment And Human Capital Acquisition: Underage Drinking As A Predictor Of Concomitant Alcohol Dependence And Poor Educational Attainment, Euchay Ngozi Horsman

Dissertations

Underage drinking has featured prominently in both scholarly and conventional literature in recent decades as a major health and socio-economic concern in the United States. As new evidence emerges associating underage drinking with a host of negative outcomes for both the youth who drinks and society in general, a closer examination of the long-term effects of underage drinking is critical. This exploratory study was designed to examine predictor variables and their ramifications (1) using logistic regression to identify a model for underage drinking history (UDHISTORY) as a predictor of concomitant alcohol dependence and poor educational attainment (CADAPEA) among individuals aged …

Disclosure And Perceptions Of Social Support In Male Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse, Abigail Leslie Aug 2014

Disclosure And Perceptions Of Social Support In Male Victims Of Child Sexual Abuse, Abigail Leslie

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Child sexual abuse of males is a serious issue that is largely hidden in the United States because many victims never disclose the abuse. The literature review highlights the prevalence and severity of child sexual abuse of males and the negative effects non-disclosure has on the psychological well-being of the victim. The need to study factors affecting whether or not a male victim discloses is stressed, and social support is proposed to be an influencing factor. This study explored the impact of social support on disclosure status for male victims of child sexual abuse in parts of West Virginia and …

Supervisee Experiences Of Impression Management, The Supervisory Working Alliance, And Counseling Self-Efficacy, Jennifer M. Haist Aug 2014

Supervisee Experiences Of Impression Management, The Supervisory Working Alliance, And Counseling Self-Efficacy, Jennifer M. Haist

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Supervision plays a vital role in fostering competent, ethical and effective counseling psychologists. However, studies have shown that supervisees act in ways that counteract the benefits of supervision. Trainees manage supervisor impressions to the detriment of their professional growth; they withhold information that would help supervisors promote learning, clarify misunderstandings, gain insight into supervisee weaknesses and strengths, and provide feedback that would enhance supervisee competence. Supervisee nondisclosure is a particularly prevalent impression management behavior documented in the supervision literature (Hill, Thompson, & Corbett, 1992; Ladany et al., 1996). It and other forms of impression management may be particularly related to …

Personality And Socio-Institutional Predictors Of Self-Employment Intentions Among People With Disabilities: An Empirical Investigation, Yuleinys A. Castillo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

As a minority group, people with disabilities (PWD) face many challenges when making a career choice and establishing vocational goals. Self-employment or entrepreneurship represents a viable, prevalent vocational option for people with disabilities (PWD). Owning a business, which offers flexibility, independence, earnings, and satisfaction, is a common vocational practice among PWD. This dissertation investigates the dynamic factors that influence entrepreneurial business formation among minority groups. Specifically, it evaluates the effect of personal, socio-cultural, and institutional factors on the entrepreneurial intentions of PWD. After controlling for age, minority status, educational level, type of disability and gender, the results highlight significant empirical …

Partner Attachment And The Parental Alliance, Ashley B. Bell Jul 2014

Partner Attachment And The Parental Alliance, Ashley B. Bell

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that cooperation and support between parents, called the parental alliance, is an important predictor of parent and child well-being. Consequently, it is important to understand what factors promote the formation of a strong parental alliance. Because of research on the impact of attachment security on individuals' abilities to depend and rely on others and to appropriately manage conflict, partner attachment is a potential predictor of the parental alliance, with insecure attachment negatively weakening the parental alliance. This study analyzed data from 321 couples to examine the relationship between partner attachment and the parental alliance. Using the …

Animal-Assisted Therapy: Benefits And Implications For Professionals In The Field Of Rehabilitation, Amanda M. Mangalavite

Research Papers

The use of animals for therapeutic purposes has been done for centuries. It wasn’t until the 20th century when people began to realize the potential the human-animal interaction had on our overall health. Professionals and organizations began to implement animal-assisted therapy (AAT) and activities, and research began to see the benefits that it could produce. Animal-assisted therapy has shown to provide various populations of individuals with physiological and psychological benefits, including a decrease in anxiety and depression, better cardiovascular functioning, and an increase in socialization skills and functioning. AAT has the potential to provide the field of rehabilitation with …

For individuals who sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the disabling effects can greatly impact their life. The effects of a TBI can include physical, emotional, and cognitive impairments that can impact their ability to function in their everyday lives. The recovery process following a TBI can be extensive and costly. Many times the burden of the care and cost falls on the family of the individual with a TBI. Caring for the family member with a TBI can cause a disruption in the function of the family. This disruption can cause stress, anxiety, and burden within the family caregivers. …

Return – To – Work Programs: Employer Considerations, Elisabeth A. Hill Jun 2014

Return – To – Work Programs: Employer Considerations, Elisabeth A. Hill

Research Papers

Return – to – work programs are an essential element of the Workers’ Compensation process for successfully returning injured employees to work. Successful return-to-work has long- reaching effects for employer, employee, and society in general. Return-to-work programs have, historically, been proven to be cost-effective for employers over the long-term. However, employers still show hesitancy towards devoting full resources towards the programs due to cost concerns. Additionally, the recession has created a leaner workforce and employers are often operating on more constrained budgets, potentially causing more reductions in allocation of resources towards return-to-work efforts. This paper will examine current cost concerns …

Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver Jun 2014

Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the constructs of Derivation and Complexity and how they relate to latency. Derivation and Complexity are theoretical constructs that have been posited as two of the main factors in differences in latency to responding in implicit measures such as the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) and the Implicit Association Task (IAT). This study trained participants to relate two groups of novel stimuli in a linear fashion and then tested their latency to responding to derived relations (relations based on previously trained relations, but not directly trained themselves). The study then analyzed participant's latency to responding after dividing …

Investigating Educators’ Views Of Sexuality, Hiv And Aids Education In Working With Students With Disabilities In South African Schools, Julia S. Louw, John Kosciulek, Roy K. Chen

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

The misconception that persons with disabilities are asexual and sexually inactive often relegates teaching sexuality education in special needs schools to a priority of low importance. The access, or lack thereof, to such information causes students lvith disabilities to be at an increased risk of HIV infection; therefore, providing them with sexuality education is imperative. The purpose of the present study was to examine the teachers' and childcare providers' views of teaching sexuality, HIV, and AIDS programs in special needs schools. A survey questionnaire was employed to collect the data. The results showed that among the four major study constructs, …
