Fear Of An Undeterrable Other, Fredrick E. Vars Jan 2014

Fear Of An Undeterrable Other, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

America is presently fighting a war on terror and a war on sex offenders. In each, the government openly detains hundreds of individuals not for what they have done, but for what they might do. Some warn that this greatest restriction on liberty may expand to other types of people. This Article examines the risk of such expansion by putting our current wars in historical perspective. The two main conclusions are: (1) some categories of people detained in prior periods are not being detained today; and (2) the risk of expansion is real but lower than previously suggested.

In Vitro Enrichment Of Phosphorylated Proteins From Synchronously Excysted Cryptosporidium Parvum, Ruchi Joshi Jan 2014

In Vitro Enrichment Of Phosphorylated Proteins From Synchronously Excysted Cryptosporidium Parvum, Ruchi Joshi

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Cryptosporidium is an enteric protozoan parasite that causes cryptosporidiosis and there is no effective drug treatment available. Two studies were conducted. In the first, a novel protocol was developed for the rapid in vitro excystation of Cryptosporidium parvum. Rapid excystation (release of infectious sporozoites from the environmental oocyst stage) is necessary to study molecular dynamics during the early stages of Cryptosporidium development. The developed excystation assay (Joshi assay) used an HCl (pH 2.5) oocyst pretreatment instead of the bleach pretreatment that is more frequently used in excystation assays. The Joshi assay achieved >90% excystation in 10 min. This rapid, reproducible, …

Economic Analyses Of Agricultural Land-Use Change And Agro-Ecosystem Services For Waterfowl In North Dakota, Thomas Adam Zimmermann

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Understanding the relationship between crop production and wildlife habitat in North Dakota - which contains a large portion of the Prairie Pothole Region - will be essential to the continuation of both in a region facing increasing pressure on its natural resources. This research aims to better understand the relationship through economic analysis of land-use change within the region. Utilizing yield, price and budget data for crops in North Dakota, cumulative distribution functions were constructed to compare crops between nine regions within North Dakota. This research will then be able to suggest regions where crops beneficial to wildlife habitat as …

Impact Of Carbon Nanotubes On Bacterial Viability: Indicators, Mitigation, And Role Of Phage Shock Proteins, Tu Thi Anh Le Jan 2014

Impact Of Carbon Nanotubes On Bacterial Viability: Indicators, Mitigation, And Role Of Phage Shock Proteins, Tu Thi Anh Le

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

The toxicity of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to a model bacterium, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739 was investigated. Estimates of E. coli viability following treatment with SWCNTs were similar using four viability methods: plate count, galactosidase enzyme assay, LIVE/DEAD® Baclight™ assay, and RNA quantificatio. Pristine SWCNTs, carboxylic functionalized SWCNTs (SWCNT-COOHs) and hydroxyl functionalized SWCNTs (SWCNTOHs) were used to assess toxicity. Regardless of the length of SWCNTs, the toxicity was in the following order: SWCNT-OHs < SWCNTs < SWCNT-COOHs. While there was no difference in the impact of short and long SWCNT-OHs, the long pristine SWCNTs and SWCNT-COOHs were more toxic than the corresponding short SWCNTs. The viability of cells exposed to all three types of SWCNTs was greater with increasing cell density. Alterations of cell morphology ware observed after the cells were exposed to SWCNTs. Entrapment of cells in alginate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a means to limit the antibacterial effect of SWCNTs was examined. The results showed that cell entrapment could reduce the bactericidal effects of SWCNTs. Calcium alginate and PVA provided equivalent cell protection against SWCNTs. The toxicity of SWCNTs for entrapped cells depended on the length and concentrations of SWCNTs, the presence of functional groups, and the initial cell density. Transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were used to study the molecular mechanisms by which SWCNTs induce bactericidal activity. Expression levels of genes and proteins, particularly phage shock proteins (Psp) that are known to react under membrane stress such as iv pspA, pspB, and pspC, changed following cell exposure to SWCNTs. Expression of the Psp operon was affected by the length, concentration, and functionalization of SWCNTs. Overall, this study provided multiple methods that can be used to quantify the toxicity of SWCNTs for bacterial cells. A way to mitigate the bactericidal effects of SWCNTs was identified and verified. Gene and protein expression, particularly expression of the Psp operon, were reported in cells stressed by exposure to SWCNTs.

Beautiful Boy Soldiers: Kaoru Shintani’S Area 88 And The Negotiation Of Japanese Postwar Masculinity, Luc Chinwongs Jan 2014

Beautiful Boy Soldiers: Kaoru Shintani’S Area 88 And The Negotiation Of Japanese Postwar Masculinity, Luc Chinwongs

English

This paper will examine the war manga Area 88 and its recent anime adaption. Area 88 depicts a fictional middle-eastern civil war in which a Japanese protagonist finds himself fighting as an unwilling mercenary. Area 88 is set in the cold war era, which, by necessity, must grapple with Japan’s political reality. As history professor Hiromi Mizuno explains, “…considering the strong connection that scholars and activists have found between masculinity and war, on the one hand, and femininity and peace, on the other, how postwar Japan’s masculinity has been negotiated with constitutional pacifism is an interesting and under-examined question” (105). …

The Girl, The Film, And The Wardrobe: A Study Of Texts, Tension, And Approachability In Punk Clothing And The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, Gina Kruschek Jan 2014

The Girl, The Film, And The Wardrobe: A Study Of Texts, Tension, And Approachability In Punk Clothing And The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, Gina Kruschek

English

The present study investigates how the modern re-authoring of Punk clothing styles through the character of Lisbeth Salander in Steig Larsson’s novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, its American film adaptation, and the subsequent H&M Dragon Tattoo collection works rhetorically within fiction and reality. A close reading of the novel and hybrid semiotic analysis of the film reveal a problematic characterization of Salander that overshadows the overwhelmingly positive response to her character from readers and viewers of the film. Conclusions from a rhetorical analysis of the original H&M press release and five articles that reported on the announcement, and …

Female Heroism And Leadership In The Anglo-Saxon Judith, Emily Bartz Jan 2014

Female Heroism And Leadership In The Anglo-Saxon Judith, Emily Bartz

English

In this paper, I argue that the Anglo-Saxon Judith frames its titular character’s simultaneous adoption of sacred femininity and masculine heroic violence as the acceptable and necessary response to despair in the face of invasion. Judith undergoes a radical gender transformation from a hyper-feminine saint to something altogether androgynous yet celebrated and thus embodies a complex form of female heroism and leadership. Furthermore, the poem reinforces Judith’s righteousness by contrasting her with King Holofernes, whose removal from power becomes an inevitable consequence of poor leadership and character. Finally, to justify Judith’s unusual status as a heroic warrior woman, the poet …

Empowering Spaces: A Student Initiative In Language Acquisition, Jade William Sandbulte Jan 2014

Empowering Spaces: A Student Initiative In Language Acquisition, Jade William Sandbulte

English

A major concern for many international students is improving their spoken English, which requires engaged interaction with other speakers in a comfortable environment. This exploratory study analyzes a student-run language acquisition program to determine the extent to which it provides an empowering space for non-native speakers of English through its cultural presentations and small-group conversations. By using recorded conversations at the meetings, interviews, and surveys, this study found that the native English speakers often focused more on sustaining the conversations than providing opportunities to learn. Several strategies were noted that either encouraged or limited the engagement of non-native speakers of …

Writing (Dirty) New Media: Technorhetorical Opacity, Chimeras, And Dirty Ontology, Steven Reginald Hammer Jan 2014

Writing (Dirty) New Media: Technorhetorical Opacity, Chimeras, And Dirty Ontology, Steven Reginald Hammer

English

There is little doubt that emerging technologies are changing the way we act, interact, create, and consume. Yet despite increased access to these technologies, consumers of technology too seldom interrogate the politics, subjectivities, and limitations of these technologies and their interfaces. Instead, many consumers approach emerging technologies as objective tools to be consumed, and engage in creative processes uncritically. This disquisition, following the work of Hawisher, Selfe, and Selfe, seeks ways to approach the problem of a “rhetoric of technology” that uncritically praises new technologies by drawing on avant-garde art traditions and object-oriented ontology. I argue that, by following the …

Inclusive Peer Review Activities In College Writing Classes: Autistic Students' Perspectives And Ways Of Participating, Cody Michael Kaser Jan 2014

Inclusive Peer Review Activities In College Writing Classes: Autistic Students' Perspectives And Ways Of Participating, Cody Michael Kaser

English

To date, no composition research exists involving autistic college students and peer review. The literature regarding autism suggests that autistic students are likely to experience, value, and participate in peer review differently than nonautistic students. The study compared survey responses from an experimental group, autistic students, and a demographic comparison group, nonautistic students. The data suggests that autistic and nonautistic participants experience, value, and participate in peer response activities in many similar ways, with some general and specific differences supported by autism research. Generally, fewer autistic participants indicated positive experiences of peer review than nonautistic students. Minor differences in the …

A Data Mining Approach To Radiation Hybrid Mapping, Raed Seetan Jan 2014

A Data Mining Approach To Radiation Hybrid Mapping, Raed Seetan

Computer Science

The task of mapping markers from Radiation Hybrid (RH) mapping experiments is typically viewed as equivalent to the traveling-salesman problem, which has combinatorial complexity. As an additional problem, experiments commonly result in some unreliable markers that reduce the overall map quality. Due to the large numbers of markers in current radiation hybrid populations, the use of the data mining techniques becomes increasingly important for reducing both the computational complexity and the impact of noise of the original data. In this dissertation, a clustering-based approach is proposed for addressing both the problem of filtering unreliable markers (framework maps) and the problem …

Mining Frequent Coherent Patterns From Weighted Graphs, Syed Kutub Uddin Ahmed Jan 2014

Mining Frequent Coherent Patterns From Weighted Graphs, Syed Kutub Uddin Ahmed

Computer Science

Current research on network analysis; such as community detection, pattern mining and many other graph mining application mostly focus on large social or biological networks. Such experiments may find interesting patterns that helps us to understand the unknown relationship within the network. Sometimes the size of the input networks are so big that it needs an efficient algorithm to overcome the time and space complexities. In this paper we modify an existing algorithm that finds the maximal patterns from a set of input networks. Maximal patterns are those patterns that are not part of any frequent patterns. We introduce a …

Semantic-Based Publish/Subscribe System In Social Network, Farzana Jahan Jan 2014

Semantic-Based Publish/Subscribe System In Social Network, Farzana Jahan

Computer Science

The publish/subscribe model has become a prevalent paradigm for building distributed notification services by decoupling the publishers and the subscribers from each other. The semantics-based publish/subscribe system allows highly expressive descriptions of subscriptions and publications and thus is more appropriate for content dissemination when a finer level of granularity is necessary. In this paper we have designed and implemented a semantic-based publish/subscribe system that can be adapted into social networks where thousands of people can share their common interests through publications and subscriptions. We have described our ontology, defined publishers’ and subscribers’ data semantics or schema, provided a matching algorithm, …

A New Coupling Metric: Combining Structural And Semantic Relationships, Mamdouh Khalaf Alenezi Jan 2014

A New Coupling Metric: Combining Structural And Semantic Relationships, Mamdouh Khalaf Alenezi

Computer Science

Maintaining object-oriented software is problematic and expensive. Earlier research has revealed that complex relationships among object-oriented software entities are key reasons that make maintenance costly. Therefore, measuring the strength of these relationships has become a requirement to develop proficient techniques for software maintenance. Coupling, a measure of the interdependence among software entities, is an important property for which many software metrics have been defined. It is widely agreed that the level of coupling in a software product has consequences for its maintenance. In order to understand which aspects of coupling affect quality or other external attributes of software, this dissertation …
