The Transition From Clinical Practice To Academic Citizenship In Nursing Faculty, Valerie S. Schluter
The Transition From Clinical Practice To Academic Citizenship In Nursing Faculty, Valerie S. Schluter
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experience of female registered nurses who transitioned from clinical practice to a faculty role in a baccalaureate program of nursing as experienced by the study participants. An improved understanding of the experience of registered nurses who transition from clinical practice to academic citizenship in an academic community will fill a gap in the literature and assist administrators of schools of nursing in planning faculty orientation and development programs to facilitate a successful transition of new nursing faculty members into academic citizenship in an academic community. Most nursing faculty members begin …
Characterization Of A Σ54-Dependent Response Regulator, Tepr, In The Rice-Pathogenic Bacterium Burkholderia Glumae And Development Of Biocontrol Strategies For Bacterial Panicle Blight Of Rice, Surendra Osti
LSU Master's Theses
Bacterial panicle blight, caused by Burkholderia glumae, is a major bacterial disease of rice in Louisiana. This bacterium contains several virulence factors required for disease development such as toxoflavin, lipase and flagella. In a genome-wide search for regulatory factors related to the virulence of B. glumae, tepR was identified as a negative regulator for toxoflavin production and found to encode a sigma 54-dependent response regulator. TepR is homologous to LuxO, a quorum-sensing signaling component of Vibrio spp. A markerless tepR deletion mutant of B. glumae 336gr-1, LSUPB401, produced more toxoflavin and showed higher lipase and protease activities compared to the …
Citizenship At Work: How The Supreme Court Politically Marginalized Public Employees, Ruben J. Garcia
Citizenship At Work: How The Supreme Court Politically Marginalized Public Employees, Ruben J. Garcia
Scholarly Works
Collective bargaining by public sector employees has been the subject of recent heated debates in the state legislatures of Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. The right of public sector employees to freedom of association, collective bargaining, and the right to participate in politics are among the “citizenship rights” of public employees. In many states, however, the citizenship rights of public employees are under threat both in state legislatures and in the courts. Paradoxically, the ability of public sector employees to change legislation has been hampered over the years by Supreme Court decisions, making it more difficult to organize politically by …
An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of N-Decane On The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of Toluene, Catherine A. Grubb
An Experimental Investigation Of The Effects Of N-Decane On The Supercritical Pyrolysis Of Toluene, Catherine A. Grubb
LSU Master's Theses
Future and current high-speed jet aircraft will require their fuels to act as the primary coolants as well as propellants. Fuels will be exposed to severe temperatures and pressures in hypersonic aircraft, up to 700°C and 130 atm, respectively, conditions that are supercritical for most pure hydrocarbons. Under supercritical conditions, hydrocarbon fuels undergo pyrolytic reactions, which may lead to the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), known precursors to carbonaceous solid deposits. Such deposits may clog fuel lines and injection nozzles, hindering safe engine performance. Hence, it is important to understand the reactions that lead to the formation of PAH. …

Buying Time? False Assumptions About Abusive Appeals, Michael Kagan, Fatma Marouf, Rebecca Gill

The federal government has expressed fear that immigrants abuse the appellate process to delay their deportations by filing meritless petitions for review with the federal courts. Some courts have responded to these concerns by imposing stricter standards for issuing stays of removal, so that the government can more easily deport petitioners even while their appeals remain pending. The risk with this approach is that immigrants who ultimately prevail may be erroneously deported. What is often overlooked is that the potential for abuse is really a function of time, with longer appeals posing a greater threat to immigration enforcement. This study …
Flexible Feminism And Reproductive Justice: An Essay In Honor Of Ann Scales, Lynne Henderson
Flexible Feminism And Reproductive Justice: An Essay In Honor Of Ann Scales, Lynne Henderson
Scholarly Works
Professor Ann Scales began her distinguished career by taking feminism and reproductive justice seriously. She became a leading feminist voice and influence on a number of topics. In later years, she returned to concerns about reproductive justice by presciently emphasizing the need to preserve women’s access to abortions.
This Essay discusses Professor Scales’s concerns and feminist method and then turns to reproductive justice. The Essay notes that, with Scales, a right to abortion is foundational for reproductive justice. The Essay then examines the increasing narrowing of access to abortion through law. The Essay next examines a current crisis over access …

The Physiological Effects Of Resistant Starch On Obesity And Diabetes, Felicia Robin Goldsmith
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Three studies were performed to determine the effects of RS on body weight and adiposity in HF DIO, diabetic C57BL/6J and GLP-1 receptor KO mice as well as genetically obese ZDF rats. The first study was a dose-response experiment for HM260 (0, 15, or 28 g/100 g diet) against the anti-diabetes drug SG (Januvia®) (0 or 0.4 g/100 g diet) in HF DIO C57BL/6J (n=55) mice injected with STZ in order to assess synergy. The most effective combination was used in the second study, the purpose of which was to determine the mechanistic importance of GLP-1 in GLP-1R KO (n=25) …
Using Outcomes To Reframe Guilty Plea Adjudication, Anne R. Traum
Using Outcomes To Reframe Guilty Plea Adjudication, Anne R. Traum

The Supreme Court’s 2012 decisions in Lafler v. Cooper and Missouri v. Frye lay the groundwork for a new approach to judicial oversight of guilty pleas that considers outcomes. These cases confirm that courts possess robust authority to protect defendants’ Sixth Amendment right to the effective assistance of counsel and that plea outcomes are particularly relevant to identifying and remedying prejudicial ineffective assistance in plea-bargaining. The Court’s reliance on outcome-based prejudice analysis and suggestions for trial court-level reforms to prevent Sixth Amendment violations set the stage for trial courts to take a more active, substantive role in regulating guilty pleas. …

Attachment, Well-Being, And College Senior Concerns About The Transition Out Of College, Joel A. Lane
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study examined the relationships among attachment, psychological well-being (PWB), life satisfaction, and concerns about the transition out of college among a sample of college seniors. A path analysis was conducted predicting that PWB and life satisfaction would mediate the relationships between attachment and three types of graduation transition concerns: career, change and loss, and support. Significant mediation effects impacting career concerns and change and loss concerns were discovered. Implications for college counseling are discussed. Keywords: attachment, college graduation, transition.
The Role Of Viral Glycoproteins And Tegument Proteins In Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Cytoplasmic Virion Envelopment, Dmitry Vladimirovich Chouljenko
The Role Of Viral Glycoproteins And Tegument Proteins In Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Cytoplasmic Virion Envelopment, Dmitry Vladimirovich Chouljenko
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a ubiquitous neurotropic alphaherpesvirus transmitted by contact with mucocutaneous surfaces of infected individuals. HSV-1 enters the host by fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell plasma membrane, followed by translocation of the viral capsids to the nucleus where viral DNA is injected into the host cell nucleus to initiate viral replication. To generate infectious virions, newly assembled capsids travel to the cytoplasm and undergo a process called secondary envelopment by budding into cytoplasmic vesicles derived from the trans-Golgi network. Cytoplasmic envelopment is a complex process involving interactions between a multitude of …

Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick
Everything Is Alright: Parental Positive Impression Management In Assessment Of Anxious Youth, Megan Elizabeth Kirkpatrick
LSU Master's Theses
Lifetime prevalence rates of anxiety disorders in youth are substantial and range from 6-15%. Valid evidence-based assessments are therefore of critical importance in screening pediatric clients. Assessment of childhood disorders requires multi-informant data (e.g., parents, teachers, child); however, this presents a host of obstacles not found in adult assessment. No single source represents the gold standard and it is therefore up to the judgment of the clinician to integrate often conflicting information. Parents’ reports of their children's symptomology may be marred by their own anxious or depressive symptoms as well as conflict due to differing motivations, values, and goals. This …
Disparities In Accessibility To Pharmacies: A Case Study In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Samina Zahid Ikram
Disparities In Accessibility To Pharmacies: A Case Study In East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, Samina Zahid Ikram
LSU Master's Theses
Accessibility is a term used to define the relative ease by which activities or services, such as work, recreation, shopping, education or healthcare, can be accessed from a given location. It is an important locational amenity for residents. This study examines accessibility to over 100 pharmacies in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2010. Accessibility to a pharmacy is critical for a community as it is the prime source to get medication and other health services. First, two Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based methods, namely the proximal area method and the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method, are used to measure the …

Hiding In Plain Sight: "Conspicuous Type" Standards In Mandated Communication Statutes, Mary Beth Beazley
Scholarly Works
Professor Beazley defines the concept of mandated communication statutes in this examination of typeface, language, and the mind's ability to comprehend certain syntax. This article has a simple premise: when a government mandates written communication, it should present the mandated communication in a way that speeds comprehension. When communication is so important that the government is mandating the words and the presentation method, the writer and not the reader should not bear the burden of making sure that the information is comprehensible. In other words, the reader should not have to work to decipher the information; the writer should work …
A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance
A Material World: Using Trademark Law To Override Copyright's First Sale Rule For Imported Copies, Mary Lafrance
Scholarly Works
When the Supreme Court held that the first sale rule of copyright law permits the unauthorized importation and domestic sale of lawfully made copies of copyrighted works, regardless of where those copies were made, copyright owners lost much of their ability to engage in territorial price discrimination. Publishers, film and record producers, and software and videogame makers could no longer use copyright law to prevent the importation and domestic resale of gray market copies, and therefore could no longer protect their domestic distributors against competition from cheaper imported copies.
However, many of these copyright owners can take advantage of a …

Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso
Sediment Patterns In Relation To Vegetative Community Shifts At Catahoula Lake, Louisiana, Karen Doerr Latuso
LSU Master's Theses
The processes that control species composition and structure in wetland ecosystems are complex and controlled by many factors including seasonality, depth and duration of flooding, and nutrient dynamics. Catahoula Lake is a floodplain lake that has existed with seasonally fluctuating water levels for at least 4,000 years. The herbaceous vegetation that attracts these waterfowl is slowly being outcompeted by woody vegetation, most notably water-elm (Planera aquatica). Our general goal is to understand the processes that cause this shift, focusing on the role of sediments. Our first objective was to use historical aerial imagery to detect historical changes in plant communities …

Preliminary Investigation Of The Geometry And Kinematics Of The Bangong-Nujiang Suture At The Basu Metamorphic Massif, Se Tibet, Chase Michael Billeaudeau
LSU Master's Theses
There are many uncertainties associated with the development and deformation of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif, located along the eastern Bangong-Nujiang Suture Zone, is an ideal locality to help provide constraints to resolve the geologic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau. The Basu Massif is characterized by high pressure-ultra high pressure (HP-UHP) metamorphic rocks, syn- and post-collisional granites, and a central Upper Paleozoic unit bounded by discontinuous belts of serpentinite. Field data suggests that the carbonates of the central Upper Paleozoic unit, serpentinites, granites and metasedimentary rocks are part of an isoclinally folded shear zone that may have been thrust …

Change In Developmental Quotient In Toddlers Assessed For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lindsey Willis Williams
Change In Developmental Quotient In Toddlers Assessed For Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lindsey Willis Williams
LSU Master's Theses
ASD is marked by significant delays in social and language development, while development in other areas, such as cognitive functioning, can be highly variable from person to person. Though preschool-aged children with ASD often exhibit a profile of developmental delays similar to children with other developmental disorders at a discrete moment in time, few studies have investigated possible differences in rate of skill acquisition in developmental domains in children with different disorders. Sensitive periods of development are marked by less stability in performance of developmental skills. Results of prior studies suggest that if appropriate early interventions are applied during sensitive …
Environmental Factors And Progressive Myopia: A Global Health Problem, Jeffrey Weissman
Environmental Factors And Progressive Myopia: A Global Health Problem, Jeffrey Weissman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a refractive error whose prevalence has increased over the past three decades, leading to a growing concern and interest among both the public and scientific communities. For years, the only explanation and basis for myopia has been genetic factors. However, the genetic model does not explain the dramatic increase in prevalence. Current research suggests that the increase is also due to environmental factors, such as fewer hours of outdoor activities, early educational pressures requiring intense close work, as well as a lack of exposure to sunlight. One study compared the prevalence and risk factors for myopia …
