Accuracy Of Aging Ducks In The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Waterfowl Parts Collection Survey, Aaron T. Pearse, Douglas H. Johnson, Kenneth D. Richkus, Frank C. Rohwer, Robert R. Cox Jr., Paul I. Padding Jan 2014

Accuracy Of Aging Ducks In The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Waterfowl Parts Collection Survey, Aaron T. Pearse, Douglas H. Johnson, Kenneth D. Richkus, Frank C. Rohwer, Robert R. Cox Jr., Paul I. Padding

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducts an annual Waterfowl Parts Collection Survey to estimate composition of harvested waterfowl by species, sex, and age (i.e., juv or ad). The survey relies on interpretation of duck wings by a group of experienced biologists at annual meetings (hereafter, flyway wingbees). Our objectives were to estimate accuracy of age assignment at flyway wingbees and to explore how accuracy rates may influence bias of age composition estimates. We used banded mallards (Anas platyrhynchos; n=791), wood ducks (Aix sponsa; n=242), and blue-winged teal (Anas discors; n=39) harvested and …

Spring Migration Ecology Of The Mid-Continent Sandhill Crane Population With An Emphasis On Use Of The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Paul J. Kinzel, Aaron T. Pearse Jan 2014

Spring Migration Ecology Of The Mid-Continent Sandhill Crane Population With An Emphasis On Use Of The Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska, Gary L. Krapu, David A. Brandt, Paul J. Kinzel, Aaron T. Pearse

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We conducted a 10-year study (1998–2007) of the Mid-Continent Population (MCP) of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) to identify spring-migration corridors, locations of major stopovers, and migration chronology by crane breeding affiliation (western Alaska–Siberia [WA–S], northern Canada–Nunavut [NC–N], west-central Canada–Alaska [WC–A], and east-central Canada–Minnesota [EC–M]). In the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) of Nebraska, we evaluated factors influencing staging chronology, food habits, fat storage, and habitat use of sandhill cranes. We compared our findings to results from the Platte River Ecology Study conducted during 1978–1980. We determined spring migration corridors used by the breeding affiliations (designated subpopulations for management …

Landscape Evaluation And Restoration Planning, Paul F. Hessburg, R. Brion Salter, Keith M. Reynolds, James D. Dickinson, William L. Gaines, Ricky J. Harrod Jan 2014

Landscape Evaluation And Restoration Planning, Paul F. Hessburg, R. Brion Salter, Keith M. Reynolds, James D. Dickinson, William L. Gaines, Ricky J. Harrod

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Contemporary land managers are beginning to understand that landscapes of the early 20th century exhibited complex patterns of compositional and structural conditions at several different scales, and that there was interplay between patterns and processes within and across scales. Further, they understand that restoring integrity of these conditions has broad implications for the future sustainability of native species, ecosystem services, and ecological processes. Many too are hungry for methods to restore more natural landscape patterns of habitats and more naturally functioning disturbance regimes; all in the context of a warming climate. Attention is turning to evaluating whole landscapes at local …

Field-Readable Alphanumeric Flags Are Valuable Markers For Shorebirds: Use Of Double-Marking To Identify Cases Of Misidentification, Erin A. Roche, Colin M. Dovichin, Todd W. Arnold Jan 2014

Field-Readable Alphanumeric Flags Are Valuable Markers For Shorebirds: Use Of Double-Marking To Identify Cases Of Misidentification, Erin A. Roche, Colin M. Dovichin, Todd W. Arnold

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Implicit assumptions for most mark-recapture studies are that individuals do not lose their markers and all observed markers are correctly recorded. If these assumptions are violated, e.g., due to loss or extreme wear of markers, estimates of population size and vital rates will be biased. Double-marking experiments have been widely used to estimate rates of marker loss and adjust for associated bias, and we extended this approach to estimate rates of recording errors. We double-marked 309 Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) with unique combinations of color bands and alphanumeric flags and used multi-state mark recapture models to estimate the frequency …

Global Analysis Of Chlorella Variabilis Nc64a Mrna Profiles During The Early Phase Of Paramecium Bursaria Chlorella Virus-1 Infection, Janet M. Rowe, Adrien Jeanniard, James R. Gurnon, Yuannan Xia, David D. Dunigan, James L. Van Etten, Guillaume Blanc Jan 2014

Global Analysis Of Chlorella Variabilis Nc64a Mrna Profiles During The Early Phase Of Paramecium Bursaria Chlorella Virus-1 Infection, Janet M. Rowe, Adrien Jeanniard, James R. Gurnon, Yuannan Xia, David D. Dunigan, James L. Van Etten, Guillaume Blanc

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The PBCV-1/Chlorella variabilis NC64A system is a model for studies on interactions between viruses and algae. Here we present the first global analyses of algal host transcripts during the early stages of infection, prior to virus replication. During the course of the experiment stretching over 1 hour, about a third of the host genes displayed significant changes in normalized mRNA abundance that either increased or decreased compared to uninfected levels. The population of genes with significant transcriptional changes gradually increased until stabilizing at 40 minutes post infection. Functional categories including cytoplasmic ribosomal proteins, jasmonic acid biosynthesis and anaphase promoting …

Kaposi`S Sarcoma Associated Herpesvirus Infection Among Female Sex Workers And General Population Women In Shanghai, China: A Cross-Sectional Study, Tiejun Zhang, Ying Yang, Feng Yu, Yanping Zhao, Feifei Lin, Veenu Minhas, Charles Wood, N. He

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Background: Limited information on epidemiologic patterns of KSHV, with none focusing on heterosexual transmission, is available in mainland China. To clarify this, a cross-sectional study was conducted among a group of female sex workers (FSW) and general population women (GW) in Shanghai, China.

Methods: An anonymous questionnaire interview was administrated among 600 FSW and 600 GW. Blood samples were collected and tested for antibodies to KSHV, HSV-2, HIV, syphilis and HBsAg. Correlates of KSHV and HSV-2 were examined using multiple logistic regression analysis.

Results: None of the study participants were tested positive for HIV. The seroprevalence of …

Primary Care For Adults On The Autism Spectrum, Christina Nicolaidis, Clarissa Kripke, Dora Raymaker Jan 2014

Primary Care For Adults On The Autism Spectrum, Christina Nicolaidis, Clarissa Kripke, Dora Raymaker

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The autistic population is very heterogeneous; individuals’ skills or challenges fall along spectra on multiple axes (spoken language, written communication, ability to perform activities of daily living, need for consistency, sensory sensitivity, emotional regulation, and so forth) and can change depending on environmental stimuli, supports, and stressors. Autistic adults have increased rates of chronic medical illnesses, including epilepsy, gastrointestinal disorders, feeding and nutritional problems, metabolic syndrome, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances, and greater exposure to violence and abuse. Clinicians may improve quality of life by recommending accommodations, assistive technologies, therapies to improve adaptive function or communication, and caregiver training, and …

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recent estimates suggest that Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) affect more than 1% of U.S. children over age 3, and rates ASD diagnosis may be increasing.1 ASDs can be reliably diagnosed,2 and early diagnosis is associated with improved long-term developmental and family outcomes.3 However, many children meeting ASD diagnostic criteria are never diagnosed4 or are diagnosed years after onset of symptoms.4,5 Delayed diagnosis is a particular problem among Latino children:6,7 Latino children receive a diagnosis of an ASD 2.5 years later than white non-Latino children.8 Latino children are also less likely to carry an ASD diagnosis; however, when diagnosed, they are …

Gender Maneuvering Over Coffee: Doing Gender Through Displays Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Alternative Femininity, Jedidiah Mcclean Jan 2014

Gender Maneuvering Over Coffee: Doing Gender Through Displays Of Hegemonic Masculinity And Alternative Femininity, Jedidiah Mcclean

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This research examines how individuals “do gender” in an urban coffee shop by performing gender maneuvering strategies in order to gain masculine cultural capital typically accessed through displays of hegemonic masculinity. This participant ethnography was conducted in a corporate coffee franchise over the course of eight weeks, to observe gendered interactions in a public space. Observations were made of customer and barista socialization in the store, where gender displays were maneuvered through social artifacts such as clothing and hairstyles; as well as gendered social transactions such as conversational styles and heteronormative social customs. Research findings suggest that both masculine and …

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?, Adrienne Scavera, Jo-Ann Sowers Jan 2014

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?, Adrienne Scavera, Jo-Ann Sowers

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

What do you want to be when you grown up? This is a question most of us heard more than once when we were kids and even more when we were in high school. When we got to be in our 20s the question may have changed to something like, “What are you going to do when you finish college?” or “Now that you are an adult what kind of job or career do you want to do?” After working as a barista, receptionist, and other minimum wage jobs, one young woman in the Career Visions project said, “I am …
