From Knowledge To Prevention: How A Targeted Tip Sheet Slashed Cauti Rates, Samantha Herbert Dnp, Aprn, Accns-Ag, Cmsrn
Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background:
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain among the most prevalent hospital-acquired infections, with considerable implications for both patient outcomes and healthcare costs. Despite established prevention guidelines, variability in adherence across clinical units often results in inconsistent outcomes. At a academic medical center, CAUTI rates continued to exceed national benchmarks, indicating potential gaps in staff knowledge or inconsistent implementation of best practices.
Local Problem:
Between December 2022 and September 2023, the facility recorded 10 CAUTI cases. An internal review highlighted discrepancies in protocol adherence and knowledge levels among staff across units. In response, a targeted intervention was deemed necessary to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This action research study investigates how I, as a tutor, implemented affective instructional practices to support early adolescent tutees’ self-efficacy, tutor-tutee relationship, and mathematical knowledge/performance. Data were collected from multiple sources, including journal entries, video recordings, semi-structured interviews, report card evaluations, and Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) scores. These sources were used to gain comprehensive insight into how my affective instructional strategies were embedded within mathematics tutoring sessions with five early adolescent tutees between the ages of 10 and 12. A constant comparative analysis was employed to examine the data, with careful attention given to the four dimensions of …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Despite institutional priorities to expand STEM education and research activity, some academic libraries struggle to engage faculty and students in these disciplines with library resources and services. This column shares and reflects on how strategic liaison librarianship can address the needs of STEM programs at a large, public university. Implementing new services around research impact and data management and building fruitful connections with STEM researchers has reinvigorated and increased engagement with the library. In the future, a team-based liaison model shows promise for sustaining relationships and forging new paths that communicate the value and impact of the library.

Brain-based tools are being developed to identify infants at ultra-high likelihood for developing autism and enable presymptomatic intervention, though such interventions are not yet clinically available. Given persistent challenges in accessing autism services, we sought to understand how families might use early predictive results to seek support. We analyzed 55 interviews with parents of infants aged 6-13 months; one group had experience parenting an older autistic child (n = 30), the other had no prior autism parenting experience (n = 25). All parents were asked what steps they would take if told their infant was likely to develop autism. Both …

Biology Faculty Publications
The red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) is an important species to the function of Madagascar’s ecosystems, contributing to critical ecological processes such as seed dispersal. Given its ecological, as well as cultural, importance, genomic resources for E. rufifrons are valuable for understanding evolutionary history and informing conservation strategies. In this study, we present an annotated chromosome-level genome assembly for E. rufifrons, generated using PacBio HiFi long reads and Hi-C proximity ligation data, and demonstrate its utility for understanding patterns of divergence among members of the genus Eulemur. The chromosome-level genome size is 2.41 Gb, and it exhibits high-quality metrics including …
An Exploration Of Sleep Experiences Among Family Caregivers Of Older Adults With Alzheimer’S And Related Diseases, Caroline Bollettiero
An Exploration Of Sleep Experiences Among Family Caregivers Of Older Adults With Alzheimer’S And Related Diseases, Caroline Bollettiero
Dissertations
As we age our sleep experiences decline in quality and our sleep disturbances increase with chances of full effective sleep diminishing. Older adults do not sleep as well as younger adults, with many older adults lacking an effective circadian rhythm. This lack of a proper circadian rhythm has been known to affect cognition and cause an increase in memory impairment. For older adults (OA) with Alzheimer’s and related disorders (AD) poor sleep affects not only their memory impairment and cognition but often impacts family caregivers (FGCs) sleep experiences. FCGs of community dwelling OA with AD are faced with a variety …
Cryptocurrencies And Financial Crimes: The Role Of Decentralized Cryptocurrency In Facilitating Money Laundering And The Challenges Posed On Anti–Money Laundering Regulations, Jeffry A. Collins
University of Miami Business Law Review
This research examines the role of decentralized cryptocurrencies in facilitating money laundering and the challenges they pose to Anti–Money Laundering (AML) regulations through literature review and regulatory analysis. The study reveals that the decentralized, anonymous, and borderless nature of cryptocurrency enables illicit activities via cryptocurrency ATMs, mixing services, and decentralized exchanges (DEXs). For over a decade, the same regulatory problems persist today as were present at the inception of cryptocurrencies. Current AML frameworks, such as the Bank Secrecy Act and the Money Laundering Control Act, are inadequate for this decentralized ecosystem. The analysis critiques the fragmented efforts of U.S. regulatory …

Finding Law When There Is None: An Analysis Of Litigation Concerning Non–Fungible Tokens (Nfts), Shelby T. Roberts, O. Hayden Griffin, Iii
University of Miami Business Law Review
The development of new technologies tends to give rise to the same quandary: how can these technologies flourish while also protecting citizens from any collateral consequences? How much latitude and freedom should innovators be given in pursuing these technologies is often debated. Non–fungible tokens (NFTs) are one of several products that utilize blockchain technology. NFTs have been hailed by some as the future of commerce while others have derided NFTs as a scam–ridden fad. With virtually no legislation or regulations specifically designed to govern NFTs, a content analysis of litigation involving NFTs was conducted as an effort to help determine …

This BPG replaces the RNAO BPG Person- and Family-Centred Care (2015) (22), and includes the combination of two other BPGs, Establishing Therapeutic Relationships (2006) (23) and Strengthening and Supporting Families through Expected and Unexpected Life Events (2006) (24). These BPGs were merged because of the overlapping clinical concepts. Additionally, RNAO’s Best Practice Spotlight Organizations® (BPSO®)G provided feedback that merging the three would streamline the implementation and evaluation of the BPGs.

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are common in the growing geriatric surgical population and are associated with important patient-centred surgical outcomes, including postoperative delirium, discharge to postacute care facility and decline in functional status. Few interventions have been developed to address depressive symptoms in the perioperative setting.
Methods and analysis: We designed a feasibility and acceptability study of a nine-session problem-solving therapy (PST) telehealth perioperative intervention aimed at reducing postoperative functional decline and depressive symptoms among at-risk older adults undergoing major surgical procedures. Acceptability will be evaluated using a patient-centred five-question survey, assessing participant satisfaction and perceived usefulness of the perioperative intervention. …

Threads Of Attachment: Exploring Relationship Development Among Marginalized Populations Of Childhood Sexual Abuse Survivors, Eunique S. Powell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA), traumatic sexual violence within trusted relationships, continues to impact children in the United States and often leads to insecure attachments in adulthood. There was a gap in the literature concerning the experiences of adult survivors of CSA within marginalized communities, where such experiences are frequently ignored. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive phenomenological study was to explore how adult survivors of CSA from marginalized populations develop attachments. Bowlby argued that maintaining mental health in adulthood depends on forming healthy and secure relationships during childhood. Bowlby’s attachment theory served as the framework to understand how early attachment …

Brotherhood: Black Male Perception On The Impact Of Mentorship, Berinda Hollis-Sapp
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
During the adolescent stage of development, identity is a foundational aspect of one’s development, and its absence leads to a negative outcome, characterized by role confusion. Positive interventions are necessary to develop a strong sense of self. The purpose of this generic qualitative project was to explore the perspectives of black males and the impact of mentorship on their identity during adolescence. The theoretical framework chosen for this study was Erikson’s identity versus role confusion, the fifth stage of his psychosocial development theory. Based on this concept, the research supported the idea that adolescent Black males should participate in culturally …

Medication Adherence Educational Module For Outpatient Nurses, Catherine Omidiwura
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medication nonadherence remains a key deterrent to high-quality care in the outpatient environment, resulting in ineffective disease control, preventable hospitalization, and rising healthcare costs. Nearly half of patients with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and mental disorders, do not take medication as prescribed. Outpatient nurses, who are at the core of mandating compliance, are often not provided with much formalized education to effectively promote compliance. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed this knowledge gap through the development and implementation of an educational module to enhance nurses’ knowledge about measures for medication adherence. The practice question …
