Using Plant Extracts To Reduce Asexual Reproduction Of Apple Scab (Venturia Inaequalis), János Bálint, Szilveszter Nagy, Rezso Thiesz, Imre-István Nyárádi, Adalbert Balog

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The aim our research was to develop effective methods for organic apple farming, based on the use of plant extracts to control the asexual reproduction of Venturia inaequalis. Plant extracts of artemisinin, chelidonine, thymol, and populin tested in vitro under laboratory conditions significantly slowed down the germination of V. inaequalis conidia. During a 2-year study under field conditions, the effect of 1% populin, an extract from black poplar buds, on apple scab was tested in parallel with synthetic fungicides and a no-pesticide regime on Golden Delicious and Jonathan apples. Populin significantly reduced the number of scabbed leaves and fruits on …

Dynamic Base-Age Invariant Site Index Models Based On Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach For Mixed Scots Pine (Pinus Sylvestris L.) And Oriental Beech (Fagus Orientalis Lipsky) Stands, İlker Ercanli, Aydin Kahri̇man, Hakki Yavuz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Data from stem analysis of 397 dominant trees (198 Scots pine and 199 Oriental beech) were used to evaluate dynamic base-age invariant site index models derived from Bertalanffy-Richards, Hossfeld, and Lundqvist-Korf functions with the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) for mixed Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stands. These functions were compared with respect to residuals of these models; specifically, the evaluation criteria were bias (E), root mean square error (RMSE), absolute mean error (AME), adjusted coefficient of determination (R^2_{adj}), and Akaike information criterion. The best results were obtained with generalized algebraic difference equations derived …

Assessment Of Forest Road Conditions In Terms Of Landslide Susceptibility: A Case Study In Yığılca Forest Directorate (Turkey), Remzi̇ Eker, Abdurrahi̇m Aydin

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Forest roads are one of the biggest investments in forest management. Their possible adverse effect on the environment is becoming an important issue for administrators due to a recent increase in public awareness. Especially in the Black Sea Region of Turkey, road-related landslides are common in forested areas because the roads are located in hilly regions with steep slopes. In addition to their impact on forests, landslides can cause damage to roadbeds which requires immediate maintenance. Landslide-susceptibility maps are widely used for different purposes such as reducing the effects of landslides, decision making, and planning. These maps can easily be …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Erosion is one of the important problems in degradation of agricultural lands and other natural lands. The most dynamic factor in controlling erosion is land cover, and this factor has been anthropogenically manipulated for ages. This study investigates the effect of land use and land cover changes (LULCC) on erosion at Kuseyr Plateau, which is situated in the southernmost part of the eastern Mediterranean basin, Turkey. A geographical information systems-based method using the revised universal soil loss equation (3D) was employed to identify the amount of annual soil loss, erosion risk classes, and distribution generated by LULCC. Landsat satellite images …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

While pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have been implemented in most countries worldwide, use in Asia has lagged in part because of a lack of data on the amount of disease that is vaccine preventable in the region. We describe pneumococcal serotypes elicited from 111 episodes of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) from 2005 to 2013 among children and adults in Pakistan. Seventy-three percent (n = 81) of 111 IPD episodes were cases of meningitis (n = 76 in children 0-15 years and n = 5 among adults). Serotypes were determined by target amplification of DNA extracted from pneumococcal isolates (n = 52) …

Mvapack: A Complete Data Handling Package For Nmr Metabolomics, Bradley Worley, Robert Powers Jan 2014

Mvapack: A Complete Data Handling Package For Nmr Metabolomics, Bradley Worley, Robert Powers

Robert Powers Publications

Data handling in the field of NMR metabolomics has historically been reliant on either in-house mathematical routines or long chains of expensive commercial software. Thus, while the relatively simple biochemical protocols of metabolomics maintain a low barrier to entry, new practitioners of metabolomics experiments are forced to either purchase expensive software packages or craft their own data handling solutions from scratch. This inevitably complicates the standardization and communication of data handling protocols in the field. We report a newly developed open-source platform for complete NMR metabolomics data handling, MVAPACK, and describe its application on an example metabolic fingerprinting data set.

After Partition: The Perils Of South Sudan, Mario Silva Jan 2014

After Partition: The Perils Of South Sudan, Mario Silva

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

The partition of South Sudan from the largest country on the African continent – Sudan, took place on July 9, 2011.1 The northern portion retained the name Sudan while the newly formed southern state would be known as South Sudan. South Sudan became the newest member of the United Nations (UN) with comparatively little infrastructure and limited arrangements for shared sovereignty by the international community. The partition process was undertaken with oversight from the United Nations and the African Union. It was rather idealistically considered a prelude to an enduring peace within this traditionally troubled African region. The former unitary …

Interim Measures In Inter-State Proceedings Before The European Court Of Human Rights: Ukraine V. Russia, Stefan Kirchner

University of Baltimore Journal of International Law

Over the course of the year 2014, the situation in Ukraine has turned from a domestic political issue involving protests, killings, and the ouster of the former president, into a military confrontation with Russia. At the time of writing (August 2014), Russia has annexed Crimea and is supporting separatists, who are in a state of civil war against the Ukrainian state, in Eastern parts of the country. This conflict is ongoing and an unknown number of civilians have been killed, notably the passengers of the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which is thought to have been shot down over the conflict …

Rabies in bats is considered enzootic throughout the New World, but few comparative data are available for most countries in the region. As part of a larger pathogen detection program, enhanced bat rabies surveillance was conducted in Guatemala, between 2009 and 2011. A total of 672 bats of 31 species were sampled and tested for rabies. The prevalence of rabies virus (RABV) detection among all collected bats was low (0.3%). Viral antigens were detected and infectious virus was isolated from the brains of two common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus). RABV was also isolated from oral swabs, lungs and …

Evaluating The Effect Of Short-Term Capture And Handling On Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Levels In Mourning Doves, D. S. Jachowski, T. W. Wong, B. E. Washburn, J. H. Schulz, J. J. Millspaugh Jan 2014

Evaluating The Effect Of Short-Term Capture And Handling On Fecal Glucocorticoid Metabolite Levels In Mourning Doves, D. S. Jachowski, T. W. Wong, B. E. Washburn, J. H. Schulz, J. J. Millspaugh

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The measurement of stress hormones (i.e., glucocorticoids) has greatly advanced animal conservation. Fecal glucocorticoid metabolite assays are valuable because they are noninvasive, but their ability to detect responses to short-term (<30 >min) stressors in a way similar to blood serum assays is comparatively less well understood. We evaluated whether fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGMs) increased in captive wild mourning doves (Zenaida macroura) exposed to either a brief (<2 >min) capture, handling and release (CHR) or capture stress protocol (CSP; i.e., capture, hold for 30 min, release) treatment. Previous studies have shown that mourning doves exhibit elevated FGMs within 2-3 …

The Socioecology Of Monk Parakeets: Insights Into Parrot Social Complexity, Elizabeth A. Hobson, Michael L. Avery, Timonthy F. Wright Jan 2014

The Socioecology Of Monk Parakeets: Insights Into Parrot Social Complexity, Elizabeth A. Hobson, Michael L. Avery, Timonthy F. Wright

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In many species, individuals benefit from social associations, but they must balance these benefits with the costs of competition for resources. Understanding how these competing factors generate diversity in social systems is a major goal of behavioral ecology, but one that has been hampered by a lack of basic data quantifying many aspects of social structure and associations. Although parrots are generally assumed to have complex social groups, few studies have quantitatively examined these assumptions about parrot social structure. We critically assessed 4 assumptions about parrot socioecology using data from captive and wild groups of Monk Parakeets (Myiopsitta monachus …

Trichinella spp. and Toxoplasma gondii are important zoonotic parasites that infect warmblooded animals and humans worldwide. Among domesticated food animals, pigs are themain host for Trichinella spiralis. Pigs, chickens, sheep, and goats are known to be infectedwith T. gondii at varying rates, depending on husbandry. Infections in wildlife with theseparasites are generally higher than in domesticated species. Feral swine act as reservoirsof infection in the sylvatic ecosystem for Trichinella spp. and T. gondii, acting as sourcesof infection for peridomestic carnivores whose home ranges overlap with domestic pigs.Feral swine can have direct contact with non-biosecure domestic pigs, presenting oppor-tunity …

Ecological Routes Of Avian Influenza Virus Transmission To A Common Mesopredator: An Experimental Evaluation Of Alternatives, J. Jeffrey Root, Kevin T. Bentler, Susan A. Shriner, Nicole L. Mooers, Kaci K. Vandalen, Heather J. Sullivan, Alan B. Franklin

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Background: Wild raccoons have been shown to be naturally exposed to avian influenza viruses (AIV). However, the mechanisms associated with these natural exposures are not well-understood.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We experimentally tested three alternative routes (water, eggs, and scavenged waterfowl carcasses) of AIV transmission that may explain how raccoons in the wild are exposed to AIV. Raccoons were exposed to 1) water and 2) eggs spiked with an AIV (H4N6), as well as 3) mallard carcasses experimentally inoculated with the same virus. Three of four raccoons exposed to the high dose water treatment yielded apparent nasal shedding of >102.0 PCR …

Accordion Effect In Plasma Channels: Generation Of Tunable Comb-Like Electron Beams, Serguei Y. Kalmykov, Bradley Allan Shadwick, I. Ghebregziabher, X. Davoine, R. Lehe, A. F. Lifschitz, Victor Malka

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Propagating a short, relativistically intense laser pulse in a plasma channel makes it possible to generate comb-like electron beams for advanced radiation sources. The ponderomotive force of the leading edge of the pulse expels all electrons facing the pulse. The bare ions attract the ambient plasma electrons, forming a closed bubble of electron density confining the pulse tail. The cavity of electron density evolves slowly, in lock-step with the optical driver, and readily traps background electrons. The combination of a bubble (a self-consistently maintained, “soft” hollow channel) and a preformed channel forces transverse flapping of the laser pulse tail, causing …

The production of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S), and ϒ(3S) is investigated in pFb and pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies per nucleon pair of 5.02TeV and 2.76TeV, respectively. The datasets correspond to integrated luminosities of about 31 nb−1 (pPb) and 5.4 pb−1 (pp), collected in 2013 by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Upsilons that decay into muons are reconstructed within the rapidity interval |yCM| < 1.93 in the nucleonnucleon centre-of-mass frame. Their production is studied as a function of two measures of event activity, namely the charged-particle multiplicity measured in the pseudorapidity interval | ƞ | < 2.4, and the sum of transverse energy deposited at forward pseudorapidity, 4.0 < |ƞ| < 5.2. The ϒ cross sections normalized by their event activity integrated values, ϒ (nS)/h ϒ (nS)i, are found to rise with both measures of the event activity in pp and pPb. In both collision systems, the ratios of the excited to the ground state cross sections, ϒ (nS)/ ϒ (1S), are found to decrease with the charged-particle multiplicity, while as a function of the transverse energy the variation is less pronounced. The event activity integrated double ratios, [ϒ (nS)/ ϒ (1S)]pPb/[ ϒ (nS)/ ϒ (1S)]pp, are also measured and found to be 0.83 ± 0.05 (stat.) ± 0.05 (syst.) and 0.71 ± 0.08 (stat.) ± 0.09 (syst.) for ϒ (2S) and ϒ (3S), respectively.
