Seminar #294: Transforming Transportation Through Connectivity, Robert L. Bertini
Seminar #294: Transforming Transportation Through Connectivity, Robert L. Bertini
PSU Transportation Seminars
The transportation system is the backbone of the United States' economy, and transportation is an essential part of everyday life for American citizens. It is essential that the transportation system continue to provide accessibility and connectivity to an ever-evolving global economy. A key way to do so is to embrace, develop and implement new technologies. One of the newest and most promising facets of transportation-related technology is in the field of connected mobility. The vision behind connected mobility is of a transportation system where vehicles, travelers, and infrastructure are all wirelessly connected with one another and able to transmit real-time …

On Non-Cooperative Multiple-Target Tracking With Wireless Sensor Networks, Ye Zhu, A. Vikram, Huirong Fu, Yong Guan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose an approach to track multiple non-cooperative targets with wireless sensor networks. Most existing tracking algorithms can not be directly applied to non-cooperative target tracking because they assume the access to signals from individual targets for tracking by assuming that: 1) there is only one target in a field; 2) signals from different co-operative targets can be differentiated; or 3) interference caused by signals from other targets is negligible because of attenuation. We propose a general approach for tracking non-cooperative targets. The tracking algorithm first separates the aggregate signals from multiple indistinguishable targets via the blind …

Realizing The Future State Of K-12 Public Education: Data Exchange And Functional Integration With Local Government, Patrick J. Simon, J. Mark Heumann
Communications of the IIMA
It is no news that K-12 school districts can more effectively provide instruction and support services by leveraging current and emerging information technologies. Nor is it news that when districts fail to adopt up-to-date IT-based systems, endemic underfunding gets the blame. In fact, however, districts can leverage existing funding sources and ROI from early projects to support later projects and sustain services over the long term. What is required is a thorough understanding of functions and dependencies in the local school, school district, and community; structured planning and functional alignment in the district and its IT organization; and ongoing commitment …

Analysis Of Fds’S Risk Assessment Methodology At Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Site, Warren Adis
Communications of the IIMA
This research describes how the FDA has incorporated risk analysis methodology into its inspection of pharmaceutical manufacturers in the time period between 2004-2008. It analyzes the violations specified in FDA warning letters that are issued after site inspections of pharmaceutical facilities. The outcome of this analysis is to evaluate the FDA’s performance to determine whether it has improved the overall inspection process and increased its quality assurance

This Note will describe a brief history of the legal attempts to restrict the paparazzi and the legislative history behind A.B. 3592 and its amendment, S.B. 606. The bills are controversial and have received a significant amount of criticism, due to the fact that they restrict speech by essentially prohibiting paparazzi, known for their harassing behavior, from taking pictures of the children of celebrities. The Note will conclude with an analysis utilizing the void-for-vagueness doctrine of whether the bill is in violation of the First Amendment.

"If She Can Do It, So Can I": An Ethnography Of A Supportive Living Environment For Women In The Criminal Justice System And Their Children, Regina Cardaci
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
There are now more women in prisons and jails than at any time in United States history. A large number of these women will be returning to the community. Women returning to the community after release from prison or jail face numerous challenges to successful reentry, e.g., securing housing and employment. In addition, following separation and care of their children by others, women with children struggle to resume their roles as mother.
This dissertation is an exploration of a program that assists women transitioning from incarceration to the community. This program helps women by helping to develop job skills and …

Translator, Traitor: A Critical Ethnography Of A U.S. Terrorism Trial, Maya Hess
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Historically, the role of translators and interpreters has suffered from multiple misconceptions. In theaters of war, these linguists are often viewed as traitors and kidnapped, tortured, or killed; if they work in the terrorism arena, they may be prosecuted and convicted as terrorist agents. In United States v. Ahmed Abdel Sattar, a/k/a "Abu Omar," a/k/a "Dr. Ahmed," Lynne Stewart, and Mohammed [sic] Yousry, 02 Cr. 395 (JGK) (S.D.N.Y. 2003), Yousry, an Arabic linguist and scholar of Middle Eastern history, was labeled such an agent, his work as translator/interpreter construed as material support to terrorism, and his expertise recast as dangerous …

Chronic Nuisance Ordinances: Turning Victims Of Domestic Violence Into "Nuisances" In The Eyes Of Municipalities, Amanda K. Gavin
Chronic Nuisance Ordinances: Turning Victims Of Domestic Violence Into "Nuisances" In The Eyes Of Municipalities, Amanda K. Gavin
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Chronic nuisance ordinances are municipal ordinances that identify and terminate unwanted "nuisance" activities. Although chronic nuisance ordinances originally targeted households that harbored prolific drug use, many municipalities have broadened the scope of their ordinances to include a wide range of activities, including acts of domestic violence. As a result, domestic violence victims are now frequently deemed "nuisances" when they call the police for protection. Municipalities, to abate the "nuisances," evict the domestic violence victims from their homes. Because chronic nuisance ordinances are gaining in popularity throughout the country, an increasing number of domestic violence victims are being victimized twice: once …
Privatization In Pennsylvania: How Reforming The Pennsylvania Liquor Code Would Benefit The Commonwealth And Its Citizens, Emma Snyder
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
Privatization, in the context of alcohol sales, refers to the act of a state government relinquishing its monopoly over sales of alcohol and issuing alcohol sales licenses to private businesses. Despite evidence showing that privatization generally increases the convenience of purchasing alcohol and could possibly lead to lower prices of alcohol, Pennsylvania is part of a shrinking minority of states that has held strong to its monopoly system and rejected numerous political efforts to adopt a private license system. As a result, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania undergoes constant criticism for maintaining a monopoly system that is not only outdated but …
