The Amplification Of Deviance Following Police Contact: An Examination Of Individual And Neighborhood Factors Among A Sample Of Youth, Stephanie Ann Wiley
The Amplification Of Deviance Following Police Contact: An Examination Of Individual And Neighborhood Factors Among A Sample Of Youth, Stephanie Ann Wiley
Dissertations
Research indicates that police contact has many negative ramifications. Individuals who are stopped or arrested have fewer educational and employment opportunities, more deviant identities and attitudes, increased involvement with delinquent peers, and higher levels of delinquency. Less is known about whether these adverse consequences are universal or if they are more prevalent among some segments of the population. In this dissertation I draw on labeling theory to explore the effects of police contact for a sample of juveniles. According to labeling theory and its extensions, official labels such as those associated with police contact should lead to delinquency through three …

The Contours Of A Very Special Border, Irving W. Levinson
The Contours Of A Very Special Border, Irving W. Levinson
History Faculty Publications
Perhaps the best place to begin is with two brief conversations that took place after one of my classes. In the first, a student told me that his family recently sold a part of their portion. Here in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and México, the term “portion” refers to a grant of land of at least 4,428 acres given to the Spanish settlers who first came to this Valley during the 1750s and 1760s. 1 So this student, barely into his twenties, formed part of a link extending back for more than a quarter of millennium and which …

I assisted in the planning and execution of an event at the Jasper County Fair which was a public safety day event for the county. I created the promotional RSVP that was sent to all the departments in the county. I also assisted in the ordering of DNA kits to help identify children that have been abducted, run away from home, or gotten lost. I helped law enforcement on various calls including clearing crash scenes and photographing what had happened. This took place during the summer including over two hundred hours of ride alongs on various shifts. This helped me …

Rape, Impunity And Justice In Kashmir, Seema Kazi
Socio-Legal Review
This article focuses on rape by security forces in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir and the question of accountability and justice for sexual crimes committed by State forces in the Kashmir Valley. Moving beyond the violence against women' frame, the instrumental use of rape by security forces as a cultural, political and psychological weapon of war is highlighted, as is the denial of institutional justice for the same. The suggestion here is that the question of justice for sexual crimes by state forces in Kashmir must be situated within the overarching context of the abuse of power by …

Resource Center for Raza Planning (RCRP)
Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation collaborated with the University of New Mexico, Resource Center for RAZA Planning (RCRP), and the School of Architecture and Planning. The County owns and manages several open space properties in and around Tijeras Canyon. In previous history, the County has acquired land in a reactionary way to protect natural resources or preserve recreational areas. They have also worked with UNM and other entities to purchase properties for co-management, like the UNM golf course. The County is interested in being more proactive and create a true link from the City of Albuquerque to the East Mountains …

Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Impediments And Challenges In The Process Of Sustainable Reconstruction And Development In Post-2014 Afghanistan, Mohammad Ilyas Payab
Open Access Theses
Armed conflicts have left numerous marks on the history of mankind and still continue to do so. They have resulted in considerable damage to the social and physical fabric of the society. Millions of people both in the past and present have been suffering from the consequences of this unfortunate man-made disaster. Yet we see a continuing trend that seems to be resistant to any change despite efforts on a global level. This study sets out to understand the nature of reconstruction and development after armed conflicts with a focus on Afghanistan. After more than a decade of expended …

The Optimization Of Emergency Call Systems Using Simulation Modeling, Evar C. Jones
Open Access Theses
Using computer simulation modeling, this research assessed the effectiveness and response times when using a mobile safety system versus an emergency call box when reporting an emergency at Purdue University, West Lafayette's Engineering Mall area, attempting to answer the first question "What emergency call system is more effective: a mobile safety system or an emergency call box?" The second question asks "What emergency call system has a faster response time: a mobile safety system or an emergency call box?" A discrete event simulation model of the emergency call service is used. The outcome of the study was that the mobile …
White Racial Attitudes In The Age Of Obama, Ryan Jerome Lecount
White Racial Attitudes In The Age Of Obama, Ryan Jerome Lecount
Open Access Dissertations
What is the nature of White racial attitudes in the age of Obama? This dissertation project seeks to answer this question in three distinct ways. The first empirical chapter examines the role of economic insecurity and education on White racial attitudes. The second empirical chapter evaluates the relative importance of individual vs. contextual factors in shaping Whites' attitudes about race. The third empirical chapter seeks to evaluate the extent to which racial color-blindness (as opposed to other racial attitudes) motivates White opposition to race-targeted programs. Findings in empirical chapters one and two are conditional, while clear evidence is demonstrated that …

Castlereagh At The Congress Of Vienna: Maintaining The Peace, Political Realism, And The Encirclement Of France, Nathan Curtis
Masters Theses
At the Congress of Vienna from September 1814 to June 1815, Stewart, the second Marquees of Londonderry and Viscount Castlereagh, succeeded in encircling France with a cordon of strong states that could better resist the possibility of future French military aggression. He conceived these goals with an eye towards European balance of power, strategically resettling European borders and placating allies when necessary. He guarded against the advances of France and Russia through the strengthening of the Low Countries, resettlement of Norway from Denmark to Sweden, the restructuring of a more resilient Italian Peninsula, and the division of Poland and Saxony …
