Unpermitted Urban Agriculture: Transgressive Actions, Changing Norms, And The Local Food Movement, Sarah Schindler
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Roberta keeps four chickens in her backyard. Bob snuck onto the vacant lot next door, which the bank foreclosed upon and now owns, and planted a vegetable garden. Vien operates an occasional underground restaurant from his friends' microbrewery after beer-making operations cease for the day. The common thread tying these actions together is that they are unauthorized; they are being undertaken in violation of existing laws and often norms. In this Article, I explore ideas surrounding the overlap between food policy and land use law, specifically the transgressive actions that people living in urban and suburban communities are undertaking to …

Facilitating Information Retrieval In Social Media User Interfaces, Anthony Costello
Facilitating Information Retrieval In Social Media User Interfaces, Anthony Costello
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As the amount of computer mediated information (e.g., emails, documents, multi-media) we need to process grows, our need to rapidly sort, organize and store electronic information likewise increases. In order to store information effectively, we must find ways to sort through it and organize it in a manner that facilitates efficient retrieval. The instantaneous and emergent nature of communications across networks like Twitter makes them suitable for discussing events (e.g., natural disasters) that are amorphous and prone to rapid changes. It can be difficult for an individual human to filter through and organize the large amounts of information that can …

Voces Del Canal: Building Safe Communities Through Strong Partnerships In The Canal, Julia Van Der Ryn, Jennifer Lucko, Tom Wilson, Omar Carrera, Miho Kim, Reem Assil, Saba Waheed, Jennifer Lee, Diego Garcia, Bill Hogan, Voces Del Canal
Collected Faculty Scholarship
The Canal, a vibrant community of Latino immigrant families, is rich in diversity and cultural traditions, strong family networks, and a determination towards economic selfsufficiency. Latino immigrants in Marin County are heavily concentrated in the Canal and have the highest labor force participation rates in the County.i Despite being a vital part of Marin’s social, economic, and cultural society, Canal residents continue to struggle to meet basic necessities for their families.
To this end, a coalition of resident leaders from the community came together to form Voces del Canal to lead an unprecedented community-driven research project. Residents wanted to affirm …

From Space Tourists To Unruly Passengers? The U.S. Struggle With "On-Orbit Jurisdiction", F. G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
With the first proper commercial sub-orbital “space tourist” flights seemingly around the corner, the need to develop a proper legal system addressing all relevant parameters, scenarios, and events also arises more visibly. This is particularly true for the United States, where so far the major developments in private manned spaceflight are concentrated, some of which may soon move from relatively straightforward up-and-down sub-orbital trajectories to longer-duration suborbital and/or orbital flights, or even long-duration presence in (potentially private) space stations. As one author succinctly put it: humans are essentially unpredictable, and the longer their flights will be, the less preordained and …
Crossing The Tax Code's For-Profit/Nonprofit Border, Susannah Camic Tahk
Crossing The Tax Code's For-Profit/Nonprofit Border, Susannah Camic Tahk
Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)
The federal tax code erects and enforces a firm border between forprofit and nonprofit organizations. Multiple provisions of the code monitor the boundaries of the tax-exempt, or nonprofit, sector to ensure that no nonprofit organization slips across the border to become a forprofit organization. Other code provisions restrict entry into the taxexempt sector by for-profit organizations. Despite serious legal impediments, however, organizations on both sides of the boundary have increasingly found means by which to cross the border. Arrangements such as corporate social responsibility, for-profit philanthropy, and social enterprise illustrate this recent trend. Through these arrangements, forprofit organizations are beginning …

In December of 2011, a group of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other Clemson community members came together to discuss the invisibility of the queer and trans communities in the “Clemson family” message. The event was held at the Madren Center and sponsored in part by the then‐Dean of Students Joy Smith. One of the motivating factors of the meeting was Clemson University’s unfortunately low score, 2 out of 5 stars, on the National LGBT‐Friendly Campus Climate Assessment tool from Campus Pride. The average score among the Top‐20 Public Schools (U.S. News & World Report, 2013) is 4.4 out of …

The Role Of Platelets In Hyaluronan Degradation, Sami Albeiroti
The Role Of Platelets In Hyaluronan Degradation, Sami Albeiroti
ETD Archive
Following tissue injury, platelets rapidly interact with the exposed extracellular matrix (ECM) of blood vessel wall and the surrounding tissues. Hyaluronan (HA) is a major polysaccharide component of the ECM and plays a significant role in regulating inflammation. Human platelets can degrade HA from the surfaces of activated endothelial cells into fragments capable of inducing immune responses by monocytes. In addition, platelets contain the enzyme hyaluronidse-2 (HYAL2), one of two major hyaluronidases that digest HA in somatic tissues. The deposition of HA increases in the inflamed tissues in several inflammatory diseases, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This study provides evidence …

Earning A Living In Nonmetropolitan Nebraska, Rebecca Vogt, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel, Randolph Cantrell, Bradley Lubben
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
While wage and salary jobs make up about 80 percent of all Nebraska jobs, they are being steadily replaced by self-employment. This is especially true in nonmetropolitan counties. Given this, what types of jobs do rural Nebraskans have? How many rural Nebraskans derive income from self-employment? What motivates rural Nebraskans’ decision to be employed? This paper provides a detailed analysis of these questions. This report details 1,943 responses to the 2014 Nebraska Rural Poll, the nineteenth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their employment. Comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, …
