Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles And "Structure From Motion" Software To Monitor Coastal Erosion In Southeast Florida, Conor Maguire
Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles And "Structure From Motion" Software To Monitor Coastal Erosion In Southeast Florida, Conor Maguire
Open Access Theses
Coastal Erosion poses a significant threat to several coastal communities in Florida. Ecosystem managers are tasked with both protecting the community from storm events and preserving the natural ecosystems found in the coastal zone. The most widely utilized method for shoreline protection in Florida is beach renourishment. Beach renourishment projects are difficult to track with regularity because the methods used to monitor and measure coastal erosion are cost-prohibitive. Current methods of coastal erosion tracking include Terrestrial Laser Scanning, airborne- Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scans, and Real Time Kinematic Global Positioning Surveys. These methods are time consuming and resource intensive. …

Excuses, Justifications, And Duress At The International Criminal Tribunals, Noam Wiener
Excuses, Justifications, And Duress At The International Criminal Tribunals, Noam Wiener
Pace International Law Review
This article examines the application of the defense of duress by international criminal tribunals through analyzing opposing theoretical approaches to justifications and excuses. The purpose of this examination is twofold. First, the article offers a framework for duress’s application by examining scholarly approaches to duress and by analyzing the application of the defense by international tribunals. This analysis includes the tribunals constituted following the Second World War and International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Second, the article provides insight into the underlying rationales that guide judges at the international tribunals in the last decade through the judges’ application …

Raped By The System: A Comparison Of Prison Rape In The United States And South Africa, Alexandra Ashmont
Pace International Law Review
The main objective of this article is to create overall awareness and to give people a real sense of the events that go on every day inside prison walls. The article is meant to show people that the way they think about prison and prison rape specifically is severely jaded. What happens behind prison bars should certainly not stay behind prison bars. The stories within this article are unlike any prison rape stories people have heard before. They are harsh, inhumane, and deeply disturbing. The only way to incite change is to open people’s eyes to the true conditions within …

Two destructive high-frequency sea level oscillation events occurred on June 13th, 2013 along the U.S. East Coast. Seafloor processes can be dismissed as the sources, as no concurrent offshore earthquakes or landslides were detected. Here, we present evidence that these tsunami-like events were generated by atmospheric mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) propagating from inland to offshore. The USArray Transportable Array inland and NOAA tide gauges along the coast recorded the pressure anomalies associated with the MCSs. Once offshore, the pressure anomalies generated shallow water waves, which were amplified by the resonance between the water column and atmospheric forcing. Analysis of the …

Section 8 In The St. Louis Region: Local Opportunities To Expand Housing Choice, Molly Metzger
Section 8 In The St. Louis Region: Local Opportunities To Expand Housing Choice, Molly Metzger
Center for Social Development Research
Section 8 renters in the St. Louis area are highly segregated in poor neighborhoods. I recommend four local actions to increase housing choice for Section 8 renters: St. Louis City: Remove the special occupancy permit requirements for landlords who wish to rent through the Section 8 program. St. Louis City: Revise local fair housing ordinances to include Section 8 as an explicitly protected source of income. St. Louis County and Municipalities: Pass local fair housing ordinances to provide fair housing protections by source of income, explicitly including Section 8. State of Missouri and Missouri Housing Development Corporation: Provide greater transparency …
Sustained Vigilance, Errors, And Job Satisfaction In A Population Of Critical Care And Emergency Department Nurses, Skip G. Morelock
Sustained Vigilance, Errors, And Job Satisfaction In A Population Of Critical Care And Emergency Department Nurses, Skip G. Morelock
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Despite the continuing efforts of health care organizations to provide a culture of safety, an unacceptable number of medication incidents and hospital errors continue to occur. This study focuses on these events as they relate to job satisfaction in the context of sustained vigilance required of acute care nurses. A constellation of variables contribute to errors including fatigue, stress, overload, protocol satisfaction, and practice risk. The study includes an intense examination of the physiological and psychological effects of night shift work. The results reflect a correlation between fatigue and errors with a less robust, though still statistically significant, association with …

Passing The Torch But Sailing Too Close To The Wind: Congress’S Role In Authorizing Administrative Branches To Promulgate Regulations That Contemplate Criminal Sanctions, Reem Sadik
Legislation and Policy Brief
The Supreme Court has stated that Congress must simply “lay down by legislative act an intelligible principle” to which the agency must conform. If this is done, a court will find the delegation of broad authority to the agency to be constitutional. There is, however, an open issue regarding whether the “intelligible principle” standard applies to delegations of authority that allow for the promulgation of both civil and criminal penalties. In Touby v. United States, the Supreme Court was asked whether “something more than an ‘intelligible principle’ is required” when Congress authorizes an agency to issue regulations that contemplate …
