Age, Growth, And Simulation Modeling To Characterize Fish Populations At Two Reservoirs In South-Central Kansas, Brian Serpan Nov 2014

Age, Growth, And Simulation Modeling To Characterize Fish Populations At Two Reservoirs In South-Central Kansas, Brian Serpan

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Several fish populations in Kansas are heavily exploited. To obtain insight into the response of fish populations to management actions, fisheries biologists must obtain as much information as possible with limited resources. To address these challenges, biologists often use age and growth information to understand the age structure of the populations, estimate recruitment and mortality, and gain insight into environmental and genetic factors influencing growth. In addition, age and growth data are used to generate yield-per-recruit models, which allow biologists to extrapolate population trends and make broad predictions about population responses to different management actions. Cheney and El Dorado reservoirs …

What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar Nov 2014

What Is Criminal Restitution?, Cortney E. Lollar

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

A new form of restitution has become a core aspect of criminal punishment. Courts now order defendants to compensate victims for an increasingly broad category of losses, including emotional and psychological losses and losses for which the defendant was not found guilty. Criminal restitution therefore moves far beyond its traditional purpose of disgorging a defendant's ill-gotten gains. Instead, restitution has become a mechanism of imposing additional punishment. Courts, however, have failed to recognize the punitive nature of restitution and thus enter restitution orders without regard to the constitutional protections that normally attach to criminal proceedings. This Article deploys a novel …

How Fun Are Your Meetings? Investigating The Relationship Between Humor Patterns In Team Interactions And Team Performance, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Joseph A. Allen Nov 2014

How Fun Are Your Meetings? Investigating The Relationship Between Humor Patterns In Team Interactions And Team Performance, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Joseph A. Allen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Research on humor in organizations has rarely considered the social context in which humor occurs. One such social setting that most of us experience on a daily basis concerns the team context. Building on recent theorizing about the humor—performance association in teams, this study seeks to increase our understanding of the function and effects of humor in team interaction settings. Specifically, we examine behavioral patterns of humor and laughter in real teams. We videotaped and coded humor and laughter during 54 regular organizational team meetings. Performance ratings were obtained immediately following the team meetings as well as at a later …

Avatar And Nature Spirituality, Martin Schönfeld Nov 2014

Avatar And Nature Spirituality, Martin Schönfeld

International Dialogue

“To put it mildly, the world is a mess.” Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State, 27 July 2014 James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) was the first film to combine stereoscopic imagining and motion-capture animation for a flawless 3-D presentation. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Director and Best Picture, and won three, for Cinematography, Art Direction, and Visual Effects. It was also the first box-office hit to gross more than $2 billion, and it remains the highest-grossing film to date. It made cinematic history. But it was more than an aesthetic triumph. Avatar is also a cultural …

Factors Influencing The Return To Work After Depression: The Viewpoint And Role Of Unions, Marc Corbière, Louise St-Arnaud, Marie-José Durand, Marie-France Coutu, Tania Lecomte, Alessia Negrini, Marianne Renard Nov 2014

Factors Influencing The Return To Work After Depression: The Viewpoint And Role Of Unions, Marc Corbière, Louise St-Arnaud, Marie-José Durand, Marie-France Coutu, Tania Lecomte, Alessia Negrini, Marianne Renard

‘If Those Old Women Catch You, You're Going To Cop It’: Night Patrols, Indigenous Women, And Place Based Sovereignty In Outback Australia, Henry Blagg, Thalia Anthony Nov 2014

‘If Those Old Women Catch You, You're Going To Cop It’: Night Patrols, Indigenous Women, And Place Based Sovereignty In Outback Australia, Henry Blagg, Thalia Anthony

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

Night Patrols (‘patrols’) are a uniquely Indigenous Australian form of community selfpolicing. Patrols do not fit neatly into established paradigms of ‘policing’ emanating from the Global North. They are not part of the apparatus of the state police, nor do they offer commodified private security services and, unlike mainstream police, they cannot legitimately call on a reservoir of coercive powers to ensure compliance. In this article we sketch out what we describe as the ‘contested space’ of Indigenous self-policing, as represented by patrols, through a postcolonial lens, paying particular attention to the role of Indigenous women’s agency in creating, nurturing …

The Mini-Mental State Examination As A Diagnostic And Screening Test For Delirium: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Alex J. Mitchell, Deepak Shukla, Hafsa A. Ajumal, Brendon Stubbs, Tayyeb Tahir

Brain and Mind Institute

Objective

To analyse the evidence concerning the accuracy of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) as a diagnostic and screening test for the presence of delirium in adults.

Method

Two authors searched MEDLINE, PsychINFO and EMBASE from inception till March 2014. Articles were included that investigated the diagnostic validity of the MMSE to detect delirium against standardised criteria. A diagnostic validity meta-analysis was conducted.

Results

Thirteen studies were included representing 2017 patients in medical settings of whom 29.4% had delirium. The meta-analysis revealed the MMSE had an overall sensitivity and specificity estimate of 84.1% and 73.0%, but this was 81.1% and …

Reaching Backward And Stretching Forward: Teaching For Transfer In Law School Clinics, Shaun Archer, James Parry Eyster, James J. Kelly Jr., Tonya Kowalski, Colleen F. Shanahan

Journal Articles

In thinking about education, teachers may spend more time considering what to teach than how to teach. Unfortunately, traditional teaching techniques have limited effectiveness in their ability to help students retain and apply the knowledge either in later classes or in their professional work. What, then, is the value of our teaching efforts if students are unable to transfer the ideas and skills they have learned to later situations?

Teaching for transfer is important to the authors of this article, four clinical professors and one psychologist. The purpose of this article is to provide an introduction to some of the …

A Comparative Analysis Of Training, Mentoring And Coaching In The Sales Environment: Evaluating The Impact Of Personal Learning On Role Ambiguity And Organizational Commitment, Shalonda K. Bradford

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The move towards a more knowledge-intensive sales market has increased the complexity of the sales job. Salespeople must continuously learn and grow to meet the evolving demands of the job. A critical concern for organizational leaders becomes identifying learning strategies to encourage salespeople to apply what they learn. Researchers have advanced multiple studies on the learning needs of salespeople, yet there is not a consensus as to the most effective mechanisms to increase learning transfer in the sales environment. To determine which knowledge tools better prepare the sales force for success, this study investigates whether training, mentoring and/or coaching is …

The Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship: The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Perceived Franchisor Support, Mary Kay Rickard Nov 2014

The Franchisor/Franchisee Relationship: The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Perceived Franchisor Support, Mary Kay Rickard

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Franchising is an organizational system that provides the franchisor with needed capital for expansion and the franchisee with expertise and knowledge to operate a local outlet (Windenhausen & Joyce 1977). It is, therefore, one of the approaches firms are turning to in order to increase their business. Franchising is more complex than a traditional business relationship because it is legally binding (Bernstein 2004). Moreover, the complexity of this relationship warrants a closer look from the perspective of the franchisee since it is the franchisees’ perception of the work environment which has an effect on their motivation and satisfaction with the …

Living With A Disability: A Gateway To Practicing Forgiveness And Compassion, Susan Stuntzner, Jacquelyn Dalton

Counseling Faculty Publications

Forgiveness and compassion are two helpful approaches toward reducing the emotional, psychological, and spiritual anxiety brought about by negative and harmful experiences. Disability, forgiveness, and compassion are terms that may not be thought of in relation to one another, but here the authors introduce the idea that the experience of living with a disability can be an opportunity to practice forgiveness or compassion, whether directed toward one’s self or toward others. Forgiveness and compassion are similar yet unique practices that influence the emotional well-being. The experience of disability includes both the disabling life event (in the case of acquired disabilities) …

The Unique Skills And Traits Of One-Way And Two-Way Dual Immersion Principals, Ryan K. Rocque Nov 2014

The Unique Skills And Traits Of One-Way And Two-Way Dual Immersion Principals, Ryan K. Rocque

Theses and Dissertations

The principal is an important key to school success and student achievement (Anderson & Togneri, 2003; Met & Lorenz, 1997). Considering the role of principals of dual immersion schools, few studies have considered factors leading to their success (Nicholson, Harris-Johhn, & Schimmel, 2005; Simmons et al., 2007). With current advancements in skill mapping and meta-analyses, the understanding of skill and trait theory has improved, greatly enhancing the researcher's ability to effectively identify a leader's skills and traits (Derue, Nahrgang, Wellman, & Humphrey, 2011; Marzano, Waters, & McNulty, 2005; Scouller, 2011; Zaccaro, 2007). A clearer understanding of the skills and traits …

Adolescent, But Not Adult, Binge Ethanol Exposure Leads To Persistent Global Reductions Of Choline Acetyltransferase Expressing Neurons In Brain, Ryan P. Vetreno, Margaret Broadwater, Wen Liu, Linda Spear, Fulton T. Crews Nov 2014

Adolescent, But Not Adult, Binge Ethanol Exposure Leads To Persistent Global Reductions Of Choline Acetyltransferase Expressing Neurons In Brain, Ryan P. Vetreno, Margaret Broadwater, Wen Liu, Linda Spear, Fulton T. Crews

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

During the adolescent transition from childhood to adulthood, notable maturational changes occur in brain neurotransmitter systems. The cholinergic system is composed of several distinct nuclei that exert neuromodulatory control over cognition, arousal, and reward. Binge drinking and alcohol abuse are common during this stage, which might alter the developmental trajectory of this system leading to long-term changes in adult neurobiology. In Experiment 1, adolescent intermittent ethanol (AIE; 5.0 g/kg, i.g., 2-day on/2-day off from postnatal day [P] 25 to P55) treatment led to persistent, global reductions of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) expression. Administration of the Toll-like receptor 4 agonist lipopolysaccharide to …

The Multiple Intelligences As Holistic Spiritual Formation In Youth Ministry, Grant E. Carey Nov 2014

The Multiple Intelligences As Holistic Spiritual Formation In Youth Ministry, Grant E. Carey

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation claims that there is a great need for holistic spiritual formation in the lives of the adolescents that are part of our churches. Section 1 describes the influence of postmodernism and Moralistic Therapeutic Deism on our teenagers, especially as they go through an intense time of change and development. Because of this awkward developmental stage, adolescents are often thought of in ways that are mostly untrue, which creates myths that are explored and debunked in this section. Section 2 explores recent trends and programs in youth ministry that have been used for bettering spiritual formation in the lives …

Islam As A Way Of Defining The National Identity Of Bosnian Muslims, Athanasios G. Athanasiadis Nov 2014

Islam As A Way Of Defining The National Identity Of Bosnian Muslims, Athanasios G. Athanasiadis

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Political changes in Yugoslavia in the 1990s triggered a series of changes in the ethno-religious field. The ethnological problems faced by the residents of Bosnia formed part of more general ethnological reshuffling in former Yugoslavia, promoting idealized nations, non-existent ethnic ideologies and fabricated state designs. However, these nations already constitute part of the reshuffling of the reform of New Europe. A major part was played in the formulation of the ethnic identity of Bosnian Muslims by the Islamic Community, under unique conditions and in cooperation with the Communist Yugoslavia of Josip Broz Tito from 1945 to 1990. The description and …

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova Nov 2014

Moral Issues In The Recent History Of The Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Ivelina Nikolova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Over the past centuries Bulgarian people experienced severe religious and ethnic threats due to which they have developed defense mechanisms and a strong sense of sympathy for persecuted ethnic and social groups. In recent history, this reflex was manifested most clearly in the behavior of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in defense of the Bulgarian Jews. At the same time two other events, however, reveal its controversial image that caused it a severe damage. In recent years, many Bulgarians are seeking the moral dimensions of these phenomena that influence the spirituality and morality of the younger generations.

Everyone Loves A Winner…Or Do They? Introducing Envy Into A Sales Contest To Increase Salesperson Motivation, Alexander Milovic, Rebecca Dingus Nov 2014

Everyone Loves A Winner…Or Do They? Introducing Envy Into A Sales Contest To Increase Salesperson Motivation, Alexander Milovic, Rebecca Dingus

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

This paper focuses on the role that envy can play in driving sales force behavior in competitions. Envy, an unpleasant emotion that occurs when a person covets something that another has, can be used as a motivating tool to push lower-ranked salespeople to better compete with high achievers. Following a review of envy and sales contest effectiveness, potential strategies are provided for implementing benign envy while avoiding the potential negative consequences of envy. Sales managers must be careful to ensure that envy is induced properly to engage the employees while not negatively affecting the long-term health of the sales force.

The Role Of Leadership In Transitional States: The Cases Of Lebanon, Israel-Palestine, Anastasia Filippidou Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

View the Executive Summary

Leadership is dynamic; it is a continuous process and ever-changing relationship between numerous different factors. The research focuses on political leadership in transitional situations and the efforts of leadership in the transformation process from weak and fragmented states or communities to peaceful and viable states. These concepts are tested vis-à-vis U.S. foreign policy toward the Middle East, which will have to be adaptive and flexible on the one hand in order to show ability and will; but will also have to be consistent on the other, so that it can show commitment and impartiality.
