Stand With Sam: Missouri, Survivor Benefits, And Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples, Lesley A. Hall Nov 2014

Stand With Sam: Missouri, Survivor Benefits, And Discrimination Against Same-Sex Couples, Lesley A. Hall

Missouri Law Review

In Glossip v. Missouri Department of Transportation and Highway Patrol Employees’ Retirement System, the Supreme Court of Missouri perpetuated these fears. The court refused to identify sexual orientation as a classification worthy of heightened or “intermediate” equal protection scrutiny, signaling to Missourians that homosexuality is still something to discount, fear, and hide. The holding also erroneously deprived Kelly Glossip of Corporal Engelhard’s survivor benefits after Engelhard, his partner of many years, was killed in the line of duty. This Note discusses the resolution of this case and analyzes why the court’s holding demonstrates a regressive step for gays and lesbians …

In Re Sanders And The Resurrection Of Stanley V. Illinois, Josh Gupta-Kagan

Faculty Publications

In 1972, the Supreme Court in Stanley v. Illinois declared that parents are entitled to a hearing on their fitness before the state places their children in foster care. Somewhat oddly, Stanley went on to be cited as a leading case regarding the rights of unwed fathers to object to private adoptions favored by mothers -- an issue not present in Stanley. Odder still, most states routinely violated Stanley in child welfare cases -- the context in which the Stanley rule arose. Most states apply the "one parent doctrine," which holds that finding one parent unfit justifies taking the child …

Evidence-Informed Guidelines For Pediatric Pandemic Planning And Response, Ginny Sprang, James J. Clark, Miriam Silman, Phyllis W. Leigh, Candice M. Jackson, A. Scott Lajoie

Center on Trauma and Children Reports

From the executive summary:

Pandemic events are unpredictable and inevitable. When they occur, the impact is both all-encompassing and asymmetrical; each pandemic targets specific, vulnerable populations, but ultimately impacts individuals, families and communities throughout the world. Regardless of origin or circumstances, the next pandemic will certainly count infants, children, and adolescents among its most vulnerable targets. As evidenced by the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, children may be at higher risk than populations more typically seen as susceptible to pandemic illness (the elderly, those with weakened immune systems, etc.). Children also can function as disease vectors, spreading the virus through their …

Self-Reported Mastery: Moving On From Self-Reported Gains In Assessing Learning Outcomes, Michael S. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

As the learning outcomes movement gains strength, the need to effectively measure learning outcomes becomes more important. This study looked at the effectiveness of self-reported mastery in measuring learning outcomes by examining the correlations between (a) self-reported mastery, (b) self-reported gains, and (c) objective measures of learning outcomes. The objective measures of learning outcomes were final exams for two classes, Calculus (consisting of two forms) and Statistics. The self-reported mastery and self-reported gains items were taken from the pilot student ratings form and the old student ratings form. A total of 848 undergraduate students completed the final exam and the …

Work Productivity Loss From Depression: Evidence From An Employer Survey, Kathryn Rost, Hongdao Meng, Stanley Xu Nov 2014

Work Productivity Loss From Depression: Evidence From An Employer Survey, Kathryn Rost, Hongdao Meng, Stanley Xu

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

Background: National working groups identify the need for return on investment research conducted from the purchaser perspective; however, the field has not developed standardized methods for measuring the basic components of return on investment, including costing out the value of work productivity loss due to illness. Recent literature is divided on whether the most commonly used method underestimates or overestimates this loss. The goal of this manuscript is to characterize between and within variation in the cost of work productivity loss from illness estimated by the most commonly used method and its two refinements.

Methods: One senior health benefit specialist …

Tiers 1, 2 & 3 Intervention: Reinforcement, Scott Fluke, Jenna Strawhun, Reece L. Peterson

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

There is overwhelming evidence that the use of reinforcement can change behavior. Reinforcement is a beneficial tool for teachers and administrators and can be used to improve both academic and behavioral performance of students. It can be readily adapted to fit individual, classroom, and school-wide behavioral goals. Key implementation considerations can maximize the effectiveness of reinforcement. Reinforcement allows schools to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to be functional members of society, and can maintain a positive school climate. It is one of the most powerful tools available, and should be one of the first strategies …

Indigenous European Justice And Other Indigenous Justices, Biko Agozino Nov 2014

Indigenous European Justice And Other Indigenous Justices, Biko Agozino

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

All human beings are indigenous because everyone originates somewhere and is therefore indigenous there. However, the imperialist reason of Europe refuses to be confined geographically, making global claims to universalism in its knowledge-power axes even while remaining peculiar, especially from the points of view of the rest of us who wonder where to place the emphasis in Eurocentric criminal justice systems. This papyrus will remind us of the old African saying that no palm is big enough to hide the sky and so even the good qualities of European empires of law would never be enough to meet the needs …

Neo-‐Colonial Criminology: Quantifying Silence, Antje Deckhert

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

In Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States of America, Indigenous peoples continue to experience incarceration at markedly disproportionate rates. Some scholars have criticised criminology for contributing to this social problem by marginalising Indigenous peoples in research and research publications. This study is a first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the (de)colonised state of contemporary criminology. It involves a comprehensive review of research on ‘Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice context’, which has been undertaken in aforesaid countries and was published in elite criminology journals over the past decade (2001-‐2010). The findings reveal that publication rates on the subject are …

Collaborating Across Campuses And Continents: Welcome To The Future!, Kimberly Brady, Nita Bryant

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012

Historically, information literacy has depended on collaborations between librarians and resident faculty in specific disciplines, but new models are needed to accommodate multidisciplinary research and multi-institutional degree programs. This session describes how one model evolved to support the research needs of graduate students enrolled in the International Programme in Addiction Studies offered simultaneously by three universities on three continents: the University of Adelaide, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Kings College, London. The presenters will discuss opportunities and challenges posed by collaborating across campuses, disciplines, institutions, and time zones, and conclude by considering the potential of this model for future collaborations.

Change, Leadership And Change-Oriented Leadership Theories In Higher Education: A Review, M. Ghasemy, S. Hussin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Universities in 21st century are playing an important role in fostering the next generations of leaders who would be capable of dealing with significant economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges. However, higher education institutions need to be sustainably developed in order to have the potentials to contribute to the development of the societies as well. This shows that major changes must be planned, implemented and maintained in the context of higher education to transform the universities to the entities which can operate in the turbulent environment effectively and efficiently. Thus, the practical application of relevant theories of change and leadership …

East Asian Low Marriage And Birth Rates: The Role Of Social Status Affordance In Marriage And Childbearing Behavior, Jose C. Yong Nov 2014

East Asian Low Marriage And Birth Rates: The Role Of Social Status Affordance In Marriage And Childbearing Behavior, Jose C. Yong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Although declines in marriage and birth rates are generally associated with industrialization and economic advancement, countries with a dominantly East Asian cultural population exhibit the lowest marriage and birth rates in the developed world. This study aims to identify and verify a new latent construct, social status affordance, as an underlying account for the differences in long-term mating outcomes (i.e., marriage and childbearing) between developed East Asian countries and other developed countries. Drawing on an understanding of the specific East Asian cultural values of harmony and deference and, subsequently, the importance of social status conferred by educational and occupational prestige …

Modeling Hedonic Processing And Anhedonia In Depression, Kevin Mercado Nov 2014

Modeling Hedonic Processing And Anhedonia In Depression, Kevin Mercado

Honors College Theses

Depression is characterized by low positive emotion and a lack of pleasurable experiences, or anhedonia. Past studies have emphasized controlling negative affect, but there is an emerging trend in the depression literature to focus on positive emotion. The current study employed several psychophysiological tools, postauricular reflex, startle blink reflex, and event-related potential (ERP) components such as P3 and the late positive potential (LPP), to assess the dissociable components in positive emotion (consummatory and anticipatory processes). In addition, several different hypotheses of emotional dysfunction were evaluated to accurately model deficits in positive emotionality. A majority of the psychophysiological tools used supported …

Cannabis And Related Impairment: The Unique Roles Of Cannabis Use To Cope With Social Anxiety And Social Avoidance, Julia D. Buckner, Michael J. Zvolensky

Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives Social anxiety appears to be a risk factor for cannabis-related problems. Socially anxious individuals are vulnerable to using cannabis to cope in social situations and to avoiding social situations if marijuana is unavailable. Yet, the relative impact of cannabis use to cope with social anxiety relative to use to cope with negative affect more broadly has yet to be examined. Methods The present study used the Marijuana to Cope with Social Anxiety Scale (MCSAS) to examine the incremental validity of using cannabis use to cope in social situations (MCSAS-Cope) and avoidance of social situations if cannabis is …

Improved Randomization Tests For A Class Of Single-Case Intervention Designs, Joel R. Levin, John M. Ferron, Boris S. Gafurov

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Forty years ago, Eugene Edgington developed a single-case AB intervention design-and-analysis procedure based on a random determination of the point at which the B phase would start. In the present simulation studies encompassing a variety of AB-type contexts, it is demonstrated that by also randomizing the order in which the A and B phases are administered, a researcher can markedly increase the procedure’s statistical power.

Bayesian Estimation Of The Parameters Of Two-Component Mixture Of Rayleigh Distribution Under Doubly Censoring, Tahassum N. Sindhu, Navid Feroze, Muhammad Aslam

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Recently, the Bayesian analysis of the two-component mixture of lifetime models under singly type I censored samples was discussed. The Bayes estimation of the parameters of mixture of two Rayleigh distributions (MTRD) is developed under doubly censoring. Different informative priors, under squared error loss function and k-loss function, have been assumed for the posterior estimation. The performance of different estimators has been compared in terms of posterior risks by analyzing the simulated and real life data sets.
