Self-Monitoring Strategies For Improving Classroom Engagement Of Secondary Students, Kathleen B. Cook Jan 2014

Self-Monitoring Strategies For Improving Classroom Engagement Of Secondary Students, Kathleen B. Cook

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Research indicates that classroom engagement steadily declines as grade levels increase, with lowest levels of student engagement in high school (Marks, 2000; Wang & Holcombe, 2010; Wang & Eccles, 2011). Additionally, the highest amounts of disengagement are observed from the lowest performing students (Blatchford, Bassett, & Brown, 2011). Teaching self-monitoring skills to at-risk students or students with disabilities at the secondary level can be an effective method of increasing classroom engagement. Furthermore, self-monitoring strategies are individualized supports that can be applied as tertiary-level PBIS interventions (Bohanon, Fenning, Eber, & Flannery, 2007).

In this presentation, the presenter will share self-monitoring information …

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Introduction: Systematic reviews suggest that a longer duration of breast-feeding is associated with a reduction in the risk of later overweight and obesity. Most studies examining breast-feeding in relation to adiposity have not used longitudinal analysis. In our study, we aimed to examine early infant feeding and adiposity risk in a longitudinal cohort from birth to young adulthood using new as well as published data.

Methods: Data from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study in Perth, W.A., Australia, were used to examine associations between breast-feeding and measures of adiposity at 1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17, and …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of A Professional Development Program For Secondary Physics Teachers, Meghan Reynolds

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

National studies have exposed a shortage of highly-qualified high school physics teachers, with over 25% of physics teaching vacancies in Iowa being very difficult to fill or unable to be filled. In an effort to improve the nation’s education system, there have been broad changes in the framework of what constitutes high-quality teaching which supports a trend away from traditional, lecture-based teaching methods and towards interactive, student-centered methods. This study analyzed the impact of a professional development program that aimed to prepare more high-quality high school physics teachers by building physics content knowledge through the use of reformed teaching techniques …

Do Offenders' Life Goals Reflect Locus Of Control And Personality Traits?, Luci L. Dumas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

According to the Good Lives Model (Ward, 2002) it is imperative that offenders in rehabilitation recognize which life goals are important to them and how they can achieve a ‘good life.’ Including the evaluation of life goals in treatment can be beneficial not only for the individuals being treated but for the community into which they are transitioning. Seventy-six male, residential offenders were assessed on type and perception of life goals during semi-structured interviews. Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BP) are projected to lead the global disease burden within the next decade. Several lines of evidence suggest that epigenetic- or genetic-mediated dysfunction is frequently present in these disorders. To date, the inheritance patterns have been complicated by the problem of integrating epigenomic and transcriptomic factors that have yet to be elucidated. Therefore, there is a need to build a comprehensive database for storing epigenomic and transcriptomic data relating to psychiatric disorders.

Description: We have developed the PD_NGSAtlas, which focuses on the efficient storage of epigenomic and transcriptomic data based …

Native American Cultural Participation And Post-Traumatic Stress Symptom Reduction, Royleen J. Ross Jan 2014

Native American Cultural Participation And Post-Traumatic Stress Symptom Reduction, Royleen J. Ross

Theses and Dissertations

Native Americans experience a disproportionately high incidence of many medical and mental health conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of physical and sexual abuse. Thus, it is critical to conduct valid therapeutic assessments if we are to accurately diagnose and treat the effects of abuse. However,

current therapeutic tools were developed and normed on the White majority population and may not be as valid for Native Americans.

The purpose of this study was to determine if cultural participation reduced post-traumatic stress symptom reduction in Northern Plains American Indian adults. This study used the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Questionnaire, …

The Impact Of Transgenerational Child Sexual Abuse And Victim-Perpetrator Relationship In A Case Of Child Sexual Abuse, Carolyn Ann Uhl Jan 2014

The Impact Of Transgenerational Child Sexual Abuse And Victim-Perpetrator Relationship In A Case Of Child Sexual Abuse, Carolyn Ann Uhl

Theses and Dissertations

Research findings suggest that children born to mothers who were sexually abused as a child are at an increased risk of becoming a victim of childhood sexual abuse. Due to the correlational nature of this research, causal links establishing maternal blame are tenuous. Despite this, many of the theories attempting to explain this phenomenon place blame upon the mother. To this end, the current study examined the impact of mother's personal history of child sexual abuse had on the amount of blame she received upon her daughter's disclosure of abuse, while also varying the victim-perpetrator relationship. Participants read one of …
