This study examines teachers’ beliefs about their mathematics teaching efficacy which is rarely studied in Africa including Kenya. The field work was based on a sample of primary school teachers in Voi Sub-County. The study employed a sequential mixed method approach in which a survey was …

Exploring The Impact Of Maths Anxiety On Students’ Cognitive Engagement, Timothy Mugendi Njagi

Master of Education

Mathematics is internationally accepted as a core subject of great importance, with pressure on students and teachers to achieve as highly as possible. Against a concern in Kenya about low mathematics attainment, this study examines the phenomenon of ‘maths anxiety’, i.e. anxiety experienced when attempting to do, or thinking about mathematics, whether in the classroom or elsewhere. Key themes from the background literature include connections with physical, emotional and psychological disorientation, impairing the logical reasoning skills required for the high order thinking necessary for learning mathematics. A mixed methods case study design was used, set in one mixed secondary school, …

Learning The Intention Embedded In The Natural Language Texts: Focused Studies On Connotation And Deception, Song Feng Dec 2014

Learning The Intention Embedded In The Natural Language Texts: Focused Studies On Connotation And Deception, Song Feng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In natural-language texts, certain information intended by the author, such as connotation, deception, sarcasm, humor, may not be stated explicitly. Recognizing such authorial intention is one of the keys to truly understanding human communications. There are rapidly increasing interests in uncovering the intention that is embedded in the textual content for real-life applications, such as opinion mining, deception detection, news-gathering, text generation, and educational testing. However, identifying the intended information computationally can be very challenging as it usually requires appropriate syntactic and semantic schemes for interpretations or inferences, and sometimes, the factor of the world knowledge. Previous work addressing authorial …

The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship

This literature review on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) included articles from January 1984 through June 2014. We (a) investigated the UDL educational framework without the inclusion of other major K-12 educational frameworks in learning environments, (b) reported researchers’ scope and depth of use of the UDL principles, and (c) focused our investigation on two research methods: group comparison and single-subject. We used the quality indicators for evidence-based practices (EBPs) in special education to review, not rate, the final pool of five peer-reviewed articles. Results included analyses of the incorporation of UDL principles in all identified studies, highlighting the need …

Managerial Commitment To Sustainable Supply Chain Management Projects, Thomas F. Gattiker, Craig R. Carter, Xiaowen Huang, Wendy L. Tate

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Most companies are under pressure to improve the environmental sustainability of their supply chains. However, there is considerable variance in companies’ ability to successfully deploy environmental management projects. One important factor, according to articles in the academic and business press, is the ability of champions of sustainable supply chain management projects within organizations to gain the commitment of colleagues (e.g., other managers from a variety of functions) to help these projects succeed. Therefore, this paper examines variables that affect a project champion’s ability to gain this commitment from colleagues. In particular, building on existing research from supply chain management and …

This dissertation examines a subset of urban poor women who live at the nexus of poverty and housing instability and who are exposed to multiple forms of violence and intense bodily suffering. I conducted two years of ethnographic research with a cohort of unstably housed women who have long histories of illicit drug use and who cycle between multiple single room occupancy hotels in two San Francisco neighborhoods. In this dissertation, I take as my analytic object the examination of the key institutional sites (what I call the local geography of hypermarginality) and the strategies for intervention deployed by the …

A Comparative Study Of Testing Semantic Web Services, N. Anari, H. Saboohi, G. Ahakian

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Web Services provide efficient reusability mechanism, thereby reducing the development time and cost. Mostly the source code of web services is unavailable to other developers who use these services. The manual effort spent by them in testing these web services is very large in order to increase the interoperability. Thus, automated testing needs to be developed for testing these Web services. This paper reviews test cases for Web Services using reduction techniques Pair-Wise Testing (PWT) and Orthogonal Array Testing (OAT) and compares the two techniques with general method. The structure of Web Services is specified using UML diagrams. The pre …

In the context of one-on-one instruction, reflective dialogues help students advance their learning and improve their problem solving ability. The effectiveness of one-on-one instruction with respect to learning through dialogue is highlighted by researchers and educators. However, little if any, is known about how reflective dialogues may lead to learning improvement and predict students’ problem solving ability. This information can be extracted from large educational datasets using data mining techniques. Consequently, this study aims at mining USNA physics dataset applying a two-level clustering approach to find patterns in the data and identify how reflective dialogues predict students’ problem solving ability. …

Liminal, Nina Kawar

All Theses

Throughout life everyone experiences both physical and psychological pains and adversities. In time, the body, mind and spirit are capable of healing. It is within this liminal space between infliction and renewal that the self endures an elusive process that is part of the human condition. Within my installation I have constructed a metaphor for the physical and psychological stages of healing through form, materials, color and process. The spatial environment evokes the literal and metaphorical notion of restoration through a visual, olfactory and physical experience. As the viewer navigates the space, it is the fragmentation and suggestion of form …

Impact Of Collaborative Specialization On 5th Grade Student Achievement In A Title I School: Program Evaluation Proposal, Nicole Villaverde Dec 2014

Impact Of Collaborative Specialization On 5th Grade Student Achievement In A Title I School: Program Evaluation Proposal, Nicole Villaverde

Dissertations

This paper details a complete program evaluation of an elementary school's transition from having mainstream classes to a collaborative specialization model of instruction. My study examines how this model of instruction impacts students' achievement levels and student behavior in a title 1 school. I created the model and in the process of doing my study was required to change it into a model I then defined as Collaborative Specialization. I concluded from my research that this model of instruction was indeed a success because it increased the number of students making learning gains and decreased disciplinary problems.
