Separation, Regulation, And Bio-Power In The West Bank, Farah Najjar
Separation, Regulation, And Bio-Power In The West Bank, Farah Najjar
Theses and Dissertations
Since the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1993 following the Oslo Accords, Israel supposedly handed its duties of safeguarding the economic and social interests of the West Bank’s Palestinian population to the Palestinian Authority. In doing so, it allegedly followed a separation strategy and granted the Palestinian people the right to self-determination by allowing them to govern themselves. This essay uses Foucault’s ideas on power and governmentality to investigate whether Israel has truly ceased governing the Palestinian population and whether the PA is properly equipped to serve as a state apparatus. The essay’s central thesis is that, despite the …

Marital Selflessness Scale (Mss): An Exploratory Factor Analysis, Marj Buchholz-Castronova
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
There has been an increasing momentum in the field of marriage and family therapy to attune the therapy process to the client’s socio-culture influences; however when this socio-cultural influence includes spirituality there is often a restraint in the attuning. While there are several explanations for this, two rationales rise to the surface: therapist not feeling adequately trained to attune to spirituality and lack of validated tools to effectively measure this socio-cultural influence of spirituality. When working with couple’s this can be even more complicated as validated dyadic measures are limited and those that exist usually measure spirituality through a global …

Medicine Faculty Publications
Two conferences, Creating More Compassionate Systems of Care (November 2012) and On Improving the Spiritual Dimension of Whole Person Care: The Transformational Role of Compassion, Love and Forgiveness in Health Care (January 2013), were convened with the goals of reaching consensus on approaches to the integration of spirituality into health care structures at all levels and development of strategies to create more compassionate systems of care. The conferences built on the work of a 2009 consensus conference, Improving the Quality of Spiritual Care as a Dimension of Palliative Care. Conference organizers in 2012 and 2013 aimed to identify consensus-derived care …

Marian Studies
The 65th annual meeting of the Mariological Society of America took place, May 20–23, 2014, at Viterbo University (La Crosse, Wisconsin). The program, entitled “Forty Years after Marialis Cultus: Retrieval or Renewal,” was devoted to this significant document on Marian devotion issued by Paul VI in 1974. We were welcomed to the Diocese of La Crosse by Bishop Patrick Callahan: “For forty years,” he noted, “Pope Paul VI’s Apostolic Exhortation Marialis Cultus has led us deeper in the worship and love of God through the Blessed Virgin Mary, His chosen Vessel of Honor. … My prayer is that your time …

Perceptions Of The Teacher-Student Relationship: A Study Of Upper Elementary Teachers And Their Students, Ping Liu
International Education
This study examines the perceptions of a group of fourth through sixth grade teachers and their students concerning their relationship; the participants included 39 teachers and 111 students at an elementary school in the People’s Republic of China. Both groups responded to a survey with the same number of items and content but from two different perspectives. The second part of the survey included teacher-student responses to one open-ended question. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected for analysis and discussion. Statistically significant differences were found between the means of the teacher and student groups in classroom goal structures (F=9.55, p=.000) …

Psychosocial Needs Of Children Coping With Parental Terminal Cancer In A Hospital Setting, Meredith Reed
Psychosocial Needs Of Children Coping With Parental Terminal Cancer In A Hospital Setting, Meredith Reed
Educational Specialist, 2009-2019
Cancer rates in the United States continue to be staggering. It is also heartbreaking to note that many of the adults confronting cancer are also parents of children. Parental terminal cancer poses a threat to the psychological well being of the entire family. Children are at a significantly higher risk for developing psychological disorders if their psychosocial needs are not met during this crucial time. Communication is vital in assisting children with their reactions to the illness and impending loss. Research has shown that communication between family members, especially with children, and also between medical professionals and families can often …
Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
Envisioning Queer Culture: Toward A Theological Framework For Reimagining Sexuality And Sexual Orientation, Danielle Dempsey
LMU Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I argue that the both the Church and the Queer Community will benefit from a reexamination of Church teachings on sexuality. I argue that Church’s current position on sexuality does not uphold its own teaching on the importance human dignity, because a sexual ethic that opposes homosexuality contributes to the marginalization of members of the Queer Community. I then argue that Michael Lawler’s and Todd Salzman’s The Sexual Person: Toward a Renewed Catholic Anthropology provides a revisionist theory on sexual ethics that is inclusive of same-sex couples while also paying deference to the fundamental elements of the …
The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The issue of homosexual inclusivity within the Catholic Church has been and continues to be at the center of much debate. This thesis analyzes the issue by engaging the document ,“The Pastoral Care of the Homosexual Person” written by Joseph Ratzinger. New exegetical interpretations of both Old and New Testament texts are placed in dialogue with interpretations utilized by Ratzinger in his letter. These interpretations serve to provide an alternative and liberating reading of seminal texts that have been used to oppress and exclude the Queer community from the Catholic Church. Queer theology is then used to draw connections between …
