Keep The Fire Burning: Biblical Principles For A Church To Spark Revival In The Northeast, Bruce Aubrey Jan 2014

Keep The Fire Burning: Biblical Principles For A Church To Spark Revival In The Northeast, Bruce Aubrey

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The northeastern United States, land of Dwight L. Moody and Charles Grandison Finney, was once a place of great revival. Local churches and their pastors passionately served the Lord and His purposes. Schools were built for the training of godly ministers and leaders. While some revival fires still burn, others are smoldering; some fires have died. Hosting "Keep the Fire Burning" conferences gives Northside Baptist Church, Liverpool, New York, an opportunity to be a catalyst for revival and renewal in the Northeast from the country to the cities. An annual pastors' and leaders' conference will be a tool and launching …

The Relationship Of Family, Church, School, Peers, Media, And Adventist Culture To The Religiosity Of Adventist Youth In Puerto Rico, Edwin P. Alicea Santiago

Dissertations

Problem. No formal study that considers the influence of the family, church, school, peers, media, and Adventist culture on the denominational loyalty, Christian commitment, and religious behavior of Adventist young people of Puerto Rico has previously been conducted. Therefore, pastors, parents, teachers, church leaders, and administrators have no data on which to base their assessment of the religiosity of Adventist young people.

Method. This study used youth ages 14 to 21 from the youth sample of the Avance PR study conducted in 1995 in Adventist schools and churches in Puerto Rico. For the analysis, the sample was divided. When studying …

From Theory To Practice: Two Ecosystemic Approaches And Their Applications To Understanding School Bullying, Guckin C Mc, Stephen James Minton Jan 2014

From Theory To Practice: Two Ecosystemic Approaches And Their Applications To Understanding School Bullying, Guckin C Mc, Stephen James Minton

School of Psychology

School professionals, particularly school counsellors and school psychologists, require detailed knowledge of many important factors that contribute to the personal, academic, and vocational development of the students in their charge (e.g., psychosocial development, curricula developments, local community developments and initiatives, national and international policy developments). The amount of detail and knowledge required by school counsellors/psychologists is bewildering, even before consideration of the individual differences in those who require their help. A framework can provide school professionals with a parsimonious approach to organising, synthesising and understanding all the information that needs to be considered in relation to a child within a …

When Churches Reorganize, Pamela Foohey Jan 2014

When Churches Reorganize, Pamela Foohey

Scholarly Works

This Article combines an analysis of documents submitted in connection with Chapter 11 cases filed by religious organizations with the results of in-depth interviews with these organizations’ leaders and their bankruptcy attorneys to assess whether reorganization has the potential to offer an effective solution to these debtors’ financial distress. In doing, it makes three contributions. First, it identifies a subset of organizations that seemed more likely to turn to bankruptcy: small congregationalist and non-denominational churches, often with predominately African-American membership. The Article pinpoints salient questions about these churches’ access to credit and use of bankruptcy for future study. Second, it …

Beyond The Dichotomy: Six Religious Views Of Homosexuality, Dawne Moon Jan 2014

Beyond The Dichotomy: Six Religious Views Of Homosexuality, Dawne Moon

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Using published theological and scholarly evidence, this article disrupts the stereotypical “born gay”/“sinful choice” dichotomy widely assumed to characterize religious views of homosexuality in the United States. It argues that we need to keep moral questions separate from questions about the fixity or fluidity of sexual orientation. Rather than two, American Christian and Jewish views of homosexuality can been seen on a range from the “God Hates Fags” view through “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin,” “We Don’t Talk About That,” “They Can’t Help It,” “God’s Good Gift,” and a queer-theological view of the “Godly Calling.”

Support For Sister-Affiliated Ministries During Challenging Times: Understanding A Foundation Initiative In Two Regions, Mark Small, Robert L. Fischer, Lynn Berner, Stephanie Kripa Cooper-Lewter

The Foundation Review

·This article describes the efforts of two foundations to sustain the ministries of Catholic sisters in two regions: northeast Ohio and South Carolina.

· Spanning more than 10 years, the initiative has drawn on multiple strategies – including convening, grantmaking, communicating, and research – in partnership with sisters themselves to sustain a diverse set of ministries.

· The work informs foundation practice by illuminating an approach to capacity development in very different regional contexts.

· Key lessons include being sensitive to the context, paying attention to both individual and organizational capacity, and the need for data.

Empathy And Servant-Leadership: The Complementary Nature Of Simulation Theory And Theory Of Mind In Education, Faith Valente Jan 2014

Empathy And Servant-Leadership: The Complementary Nature Of Simulation Theory And Theory Of Mind In Education, Faith Valente

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Every teacher should attempt to guide the personal and social development of his or her students (Wilson 2011, 246). The effectiveness and efficiency with which such elucidation takes place, however, may depend to a great extent on the empathetic understanding between pupil and instructor (208). The discernment that teachers and students exhibit regarding their own lives and the realities experienced by other persons will affect what can be taught and learned. Constructive development theory suggests that to be most effective, teachers who are leaders must understand how students think and feel about themselves (McCauley et al. 2006). Several studies have …

Religious Schools In Australia's Education System: An Investigation Of The Social And Civic Implications, Graeme L. Cross Jan 2014

Religious Schools In Australia's Education System: An Investigation Of The Social And Civic Implications, Graeme L. Cross

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In the past 20 years the number of religious schools present within Australia’s educational marketplace has grown prolifically. In response, concerns have been raised and it has been asserted that the lack of religious diversity within these schools may impede development of the competencies young Australians need in order to engage relationally in pluralistic social settings. Social capital theorists refer to the act of engaging relationally in the midst of social diversity as bridging and the relational networks that form as being a source of bridging social capital.

This study sought to understand how the educative environment of religious …

Two By Two Leadership: A Model Of Christian Leadership, Joseph Swanner Jan 2014

Two By Two Leadership: A Model Of Christian Leadership, Joseph Swanner

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A growing number of scholars are accepting the suggestion that shared leadership is preferred over individual leadership. The shared leadership model is proliferating into new fields where it is being modified and improved. Biblically, there is a pattern of sending individuals two by two into leadership, as well. Christian leadership models of the future must also return to the two by two, co-leader ideal. There is room for strategizing the details of what this model will look like on a practical level. Utilizing a case study and surveys, this project examines the effects of this leadership model in a church …

When Churches Reorganize, Pamela Foohey Jan 2014

When Churches Reorganize, Pamela Foohey

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The article complements and expands the author’s prior article, Bankrupting the Faith. This article primarily relies on interviews with attorneys who represented religious organizations in chapter 11 bankruptcy to assess whether reorganization has the potential to offer an effective solution to religious organizations’ financial problems. In doing so, it makes three contributions. First, it tracks the post-bankruptcy outcomes of a portion of the debtors to find that approximately 65% remained operating post-bankruptcy; these outcomes contradict previous studies of small business bankruptcy and are important to current debates about reforming small business bankruptcy. Given this—and in keeping with the ABLJ’s …
