The Everyday As Involved In War, Tammy M. Proctor Oct 2014

The Everyday As Involved In War, Tammy M. Proctor

History Faculty Publications

This essay examines how the "everyday" functions in war, not only for those on the home fronts, but for those in combat roles and for those living between the lines. Five important qualities, among others, shape the everyday in World War I: Waiting, Staying Connected, Food and Shelter, Managing Fear, and Camaraderie. Each of these themes plays out at the homes of those left behind, in the camps of civilian and military prisoners, in occupied zones, and at the fronts.

Effects Of Genetic Modification Of Phosphoinositol Pathway On Light Signaling And Secondary Metabolism In Tomato Plants, Mohammad Alimohammadi Oct 2014

Effects Of Genetic Modification Of Phosphoinositol Pathway On Light Signaling And Secondary Metabolism In Tomato Plants, Mohammad Alimohammadi

Theses and Dissertations

Inositol- (1,4,5) triphosphate (InsP3) is known as an important signaling factor and a regulator of plant responses to environmental and stress conditions. Overexpression of the InsP 5-ptase gene is found to enhance tolerance of transgenic tomato plants to abiotic stress and the induction of lycopene synthesis in InsP 5-ptase transgenic plants. Here, we demonstrated that the genetic reduction of InsP3 affected the overall phosphoinositol pathway, flavonoid metabolism, and light signaling in InsP 5-ptase transgenic plants. Transgenic plants that overexpress the InsP 5-ptase gene demonstrate an increase in the expression of major light signaling transcription factors (LeHY5, SIMYB12, LeELIP). We found …

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton Oct 2014

Residency Time As An Indicator Of Reproductive Restraint In Male Burying Beetles, Ashlee N. Smith, Mark C. Belk, J. Curtis Creighton

Faculty Publications

The cost of reproduction theory posits that there are trade-offs between current and future reproduction because resources that are allocated to current offspring cannot be used for future reproductive opportunities. Two adaptive reproductive strategies have been hypothesized to offset the costs of reproduction and maximize lifetime fitness. The terminal investment hypothesis predicts that as individuals age they will allocate more resources to current reproduction as a response to decreasing residual reproductive value. The reproductive restraint hypotheses predicts that as individuals age they will allocate fewer resources to current reproduction to increase the chance of surviving for an additional reproductive opportunity. …

Locus Of Control And Obesity, Florence Neymotin, Louis R. Nemzer Oct 2014

Locus Of Control And Obesity, Florence Neymotin, Louis R. Nemzer

Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles

In the developed world, the hazards associated with obesity have largely outstripped the risk of starvation. Obesity remains a difficult public health issue to address, due in large part to the many disciplines involved. A full understanding requires knowledge in the fields of genetics, endocrinology, psychology, sociology, economics, and public policy - among others. In this short review, which serves as an introduction to the Frontiers in Endocrinology research topic,we address one cross-disciplinary relationship: the interaction between the hunger/satiation neural circuitry, an individual's perceived locus of control, and the risk for obesity. Mammals have evolved a complex system for modulating …

Public Health Services Research: Informing Public Health Practice & Policy, Glen P. Mays Oct 2014

Public Health Services Research: Informing Public Health Practice & Policy, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Heterogeneity in the mechanisms used for organizing and financing public health strategies creates opportunities for comparative effectiveness research (CER) in public health that examine which organization and financing mechanisms work best, for whom, and under what circumstances. Findings from these types of studies have direct utility in shaping public health policy and practice decisions.

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard Oct 2014

Causes And Consequences Of Chinese Privet (Ligustrum Sinense Lour.) Invasion In Hydrologically Altered Forested Wetlands, Meghan Beth Foard

Student Theses and Dissertations

What drives invasive species success? My research consists of four studies aiming to answer this question for Ligustrum sinense. The four projects are: (1) Synthesis of invasion literature within passenger-driver-backseat driver frameworks; (2) hydrochory investigation of water as a dispersal mechanism for invasion; (3) ecohydrology investigation of inundation effects on seed viability of L. sinense; (4) dendrochronology study of the effects of stream channelization and L. sinense invasion on bottomland oak tree growth. Results suggest that L. sinense initially invaded habitats that were hydrologically altered, resulting in drier conditions and a "novel niche." Dispersal via hydrochory allowed L. sinense to …

The Service Learning Experiences Of Hispanic High School Students On The U.S.-Mexico Border, Andrea Joy Garza

Theses and Dissertations

This phenomenological qualitative study explored the service learning experiences of Hispanic high school students on the U.S.-Mexico border. This study took place in a high school located in south Texas along the U.S.-Mexico border; population approximately 248,142 and ethnically 95.6 percent Hispanic (U.S. Census, 2013). The participants were selected via purposive sampling, thus it was restricted to participants involved in the service learning opportunity with the Volunteer Income Tax Assessor (VITA) program while taking a high school level financial analysis class. Service learning education is defined as the integration of academic material, service activities, and critical reflection based on reciprocal …

The Role Of Alaska's Nurse Practitioners In Preventing Early Childhood Caries, Margaret Maixner Oct 2014

The Role Of Alaska's Nurse Practitioners In Preventing Early Childhood Caries, Margaret Maixner

Student Projects for Graduate Degrees

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is the most common chronic disease of childhood despite being preventable. Because of its high prevalence, its impact on the quality of life of young children, and its potential for increasing their risk of caries in the permanent dentition, ECC is arguably one of the most serious and costly health conditions among young children. Poor access to dental services by rural Alaskans and poor dental care in general are considered the main contributing factors to the continued rise in ECC in Alaska. Primary care providers (PCPs), such as nurse practitioners (NPs), are in unique positions to …

Away From Home Meals: Associations With Biomarkers Of Chronic Disease And Dietary Intake In American Adults, Nhanes 2005-2010, Ashima K. Kant, Melanie I. Whitley, Barry I. Graubard

Publications and Research

Background Away from home (AFH) meals are known to be energy-dense and of poor diet quality. Both direct and indirect exposure (e.g., neighborhood restaurant density) to AFH meals have been implicated as contributors to higher body weight and adverse health outcomes. Objective To examine the association of frequency of eating AFH and fast-food meals with biomarkers of chronic disease and dietary intake. Design This cross-sectional study used frequency of AFH and fast-food meal and biomarker data from the NHANES 2005-2010. Information on weekly frequency of AFH and fast-food meals was collected via questionnaire during the household interview. The metabolic biomarkers …

Orians, Timothy S. Griffin, Corene Matyas, Albert Robbat, Sean Cash, Dayuan Xue, Chunlin Long, Uchenna Unachukwu, Sarabeth Buckley, Edward J. Kennelly

Publications and Research

Climate change is impacting agro-ecosystems, crops, and farmer livelihoods in communities worldwide. While it is well understood that more frequent and intense climate events in many areas are resulting in a decline in crop yields, the impact on crop quality is less acknowledged, yet it is critical for food systems that benefit both farmers and consumers through high-quality products. This study examines tea (Camellia sinensis; Theaceae), the world’s most widely consumed beverage after water, as a study system to measure effects of seasonal precipitation variability on crop functional quality and associated farmer knowledge, preferences, and livelihoods. Sampling was conducted in …

Linking Teams With Technology: Integrating Databases In Experiential Exercises In An Introductory Business Course, Anne Walsh, Susan C. Borkowski

Organization Management Journal

The arrival of the “virtual generation” on campus has shifted the pedagogy in most business courses. Students in this generation not only are adept in navigating an array of mobile devices, but also have distinct preferences for courses that enable them to leverage their technology skills. Despite their affinity for technology, many of these students may not be as aware of the nuances related to digital content and often rely upon familiar but less relevant online resources to support course projects. This article presents several experiential exercises developed to enable students to leverage technology via database hyperlinks in an introductory …
