Artificial Neural Networks In Online Semiautomated Pest Discriminability: An Applied Case With 2 Thrips Species, Peter Fedor, Eladia Maria Peña-Méndez, Halina Kucharczyk, Jaromir Vanhara, Josef Havel, Martina Doricova, Pavol Prokop
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Being faced with practical problems in pest identification, we present a methodical paper based on artificial neural networks to discriminate morphologically very similar species, Thrips sambuci Heeger, 1854 and Thrips fuscipennis Haliday, 1836 (Thysanoptera: Thripinae), as an applied case for more general use. The artificially intelligent system may be successfully applied as a credible, online, semiautomated identification tool that extracts hidden information from noisy data, even when the standard characters have much overlap and the common morphological keys hint at the practical problem of high morphological plasticity. Statistical analysis of 17 characters, measured or determined for each Thrips fuscipennis and …

Screening For Resistance To Sugarcane Brown Rust With Controlled Conditions Inoculation, Mavir Carolina Avellaneda Barbosa
Screening For Resistance To Sugarcane Brown Rust With Controlled Conditions Inoculation, Mavir Carolina Avellaneda Barbosa
LSU Master's Theses
Brown rust, caused by Puccinia melanocephala, is an important disease of sugarcane. Breeding for host plant resistance is the primary control measure. Screening for resistance has relied on rating the severity of symptoms caused by natural infection; however, erratic results make this method problematic. A method accomplishing both infection and disease expression under controlled conditions could avoid the problems associated with resistance evaluations under natural infection. Inoculation of seedlings was evaluated to determine whether it could provide accurate resistance ratings in cross appraisal, and inoculation under controlled conditions was evaluated for the potential to accurately determine resistance reactions in clones …

Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) exposures and gypseous soils occupy over 100 million ha worldwide, primarily in arid and semiarid regions, with particularly large areas of surface gypsum in southwestern Asia, the Mediterranean region, the Horn of Africa and southwestern North America. Each of these areas hosts a diverse assemblage of gypsum endemic plant taxa, known as gypsophiles. Although plant biologists have been interested in the causes of gypsophily for well over a century, it has only been over the past few decades that gypsophile floras have received sustained ecological and evolutionary study. Recent work, principally in Spain, has revealed that both physical …

Changing Places: Adult Children And The Transition Of Aging Parents, Sarah Martin Gilbert
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Purpose: This dissertation analyzed measurement of relocation transition in older adults, assessed research for the manner in which older adults make the decision to move, and the adult child's role in the transition of their aging parents. Design: Using Hawker, Payne, Kerr, Hardey, & Powell's (2002) mixed research review method, two integrative reviews were conducted. The first examined how relocation transition is measured in the literature while the second applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1985) to determine the behavioral beliefs, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control of older adults as they contemplate a relocation from independent living to …
You Don't Own Me: Feral Dogs And The Question Of Ownership, Stacy A. Nowicki
You Don't Own Me: Feral Dogs And The Question Of Ownership, Stacy A. Nowicki
Animal Law Review
Feral dogs occupy an ambiguous position, challenging standard categories of domestication, wildness, and property ownership. This ambiguity, in turn, complicates the legal status of feral dogs. Feral dogs' property status is particularly critical, as whether a feral dog is owned by someone, or no one at all, hold implications not only for civil and criminal liability in incidents involving feral dogs, but also the legal ability of animal rescue organizations to intervene in the lives of feral dogs. Part II of this Article summarizes the application of property law to animals, particularly highlighting the role played by an animal's status …
Dog Meat Trade In South Korea: A Report On The State Of The Trade And Efforts To Eliminate It, Claire Czajkowski
Dog Meat Trade In South Korea: A Report On The State Of The Trade And Efforts To Eliminate It, Claire Czajkowski
Animal Law Review
Within South Korea, the dog meat trade occupies a liminal legal space-neither explicitly condoned, nor technically prohibited. As a result of existing in this legal gray area, all facets of the dog meat trade within South Korea-from dog farms, to transport, to slaughter, to consumption-are poorly regulated and often obfuscated from review. In the South Korean context, the dog meat trade itself not only terminally impacts millions of canine lives each year, but resonates in a larger national context: raising environmental concerns, and standing as a proxy for cultural and political change. Part II of this Article describes the nature …

Background: Deregulated energetics is a property of most cancer cells. This phenomenon, known as the Warburg Effect or aerobic glycolysis, is characterized by increased glucose uptake, lactate export and extracellular acidification, even in the presence of oxygen. beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid that has previously been shown to be metabolized into carnosine, which functions as an intracellular buffer. Because of this buffering capacity, we investigated the effects of beta-alanine on the metabolic cancerous phenotype.
Methods: Non-malignant MCF-10a and malignant MCF-7 breast epithelial cells were treated with beta-alanine at 100 mM for 24 hours. Aerobic glycolysis was quantified …

Psychosocial Factors Associated With Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Pregnant Women On Follow Up In A Tertiary Maternity Hospital, Cornelia Akinyi Ochola
Psychosocial Factors Associated With Exclusive Breastfeeding Among Pregnant Women On Follow Up In A Tertiary Maternity Hospital, Cornelia Akinyi Ochola
Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health
Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life is the ideal form of infant feeding. Health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding to infant and mother are well documented in literature. Despite this, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of infants‘ life in Kenya remains low. National nutrition strategy for maternal, infant and young child has set its 2017 target for exclusive breastfeeding at 80% from 32%. To achieve this target, new strategies are needed to complement current exclusive breastfeeding initiatives. Application of theory of planned behaviour model was used to determine the psychosocial factors associated …

Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The theory of change behind the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Program (AGEP) posits that adolescent girls are empowered by acquiring social, health, and economic assets. Girls can draw on these assets to reduce vulnerabilities and expand opportunities, thereby increasing their likelihood of completing school, delaying sexual debut, and reducing the risk of early marriage, unintended pregnancy, acquisition of HIV, and so on. AGEP serves vulnerable adolescent girls in Zambia aged 10–19 in two age cohorts: 10–14-year-olds and 15–19-year-olds. AGEP operates in ten “master sites,” five urban and five rural, in four provinces of Zambia. The three core components of AGEP in …
The Growing Power Of Healthcare Ethics Committees Heightens Due Process Concerns, Thaddeus Mason Pope
The Growing Power Of Healthcare Ethics Committees Heightens Due Process Concerns, Thaddeus Mason Pope
Faculty Scholarship
Complex ethical situations, such as end-of-life medical treatment disputes, occur on a regular basis in healthcare settings. Healthcare ethics committees (HECs) have been a leading dispute resolution forum for many of these conflicts. But while the function of HECs has evolved from mediation to adjudication, the form of HECs has not evolved to adapt to this expanded and more consequential function.
HECs are typically multidisciplinary groups comprised of representatives from different departments of the healthcare facility: medicine, nursing, law, pastoral care, and social work, for example. HECs were established to support and advise patients, families, and caregivers as they work …
Doc Of Bacteriophage P1 Is An Enzyme That Inhibits Translation And Phosphorylates A Protein Target, Stephanie Cale
Doc Of Bacteriophage P1 Is An Enzyme That Inhibits Translation And Phosphorylates A Protein Target, Stephanie Cale
Theses
Doc induces cell death by inhibiting translation; however, the mechanism of Doc-induced cell death and the cellular target of the toxin were unknown. One theory suggested that Doc inhibits translation elongation by binding directly to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Later evidence showed catalytic activity in distant homologs of Doc. These homologs contain a Fic-domain that has been shown to modify target GTPases by AMPylation and phosphocholination. Therefore, [35S] - Met, á[32P] - ATP, and ã[32P] - ATP were used in conjunction with an S30 extract to confirm that Doc inhibits translation, to assess the mechanism of modification, and to identify …
