Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is one of the most destructive pests of several vegetables and fruits worldwide. In spite of various control methods, this pest has still continued to cause significant damage. In this study, the culturable bacterial flora of S. littoralis was determined. New isolates from S. littoralis, as well as 12 different Bacillus isolates belong to 5 species that were previously isolated from different pests, were tested on S. littoralis larvae. In total, 9 bacteria were characterized based on their morphological, biochemical, physiological, and molecular characteristics. The bacterial flora of S. littoralis was determined as Flavobacterium sp. …

Quality Characteristics Of Trabzon Persimmon Dried At Several Temperatures And Pretreated By Different Methods, Si̇bel Bölek, Ersel Obuz Jan 2014

Quality Characteristics Of Trabzon Persimmon Dried At Several Temperatures And Pretreated By Different Methods, Si̇bel Bölek, Ersel Obuz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Although Trabzon persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) is a beneficial fruit for both human health and industrial use, it is generally used seasonally, and inadequate attention has been given to its off-season use. This study was designed to determine the best drying method for optimizing the quality of dried Trabzon persimmon (Diospyros kaki 'Fuyu'). Samples treated with sodium metabisulfite prior to drying and dried at 65 °C had the highest L* value (P < 0.05). Rehydration value and ascorbic acid content of samples dried at 50 °C were the highest. Nevertheless, these samples had lower total phenolic content than samples dried at 65 °C and 90 °C. Samples treated with sodium metabisulfite before drying had the highest appearance score; however, these samples were the least liked and had the lowest flavor score. Control samples were the most popular samples in terms of flavor (P < 0.05). During storage, control group samples had the highest increase in total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, while samples treated with sodium metabisulfite prior to drying had the lowest increase in total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, owing largely to the antimicrobial effect of sodium metabisulfite. Although sodium metabisulfite treatment gave the best physical, chemical, and microbiological results, these dried persimmons were given the lowest sensory scores.

Examining The Nutritional Requirements Of Acidophilic Archaea "Ferroplasma Acidarmanus" Strain Fer1, Yudong Qu

Masters Theses

Ferroplasma acidarmanus strain fer1 (fer1) is an archaeal microaerophilic acidophile (pH 0 to pH 3) with a chemolithotrophic metabolism. As an efficient consumer of sulfate, fer1 plays an important role in the biogeochemical process of pyrite dissolution at acidic site. Confirming the genomic prediction of metabolic gene functions in this organism requires functional assays, which cannot be carried out until a defined medium is obtained. The objective of the current study was to replace the 0.1% (w/v) yeast extract component in the growth medium, mfer, with defined components for carbon, nitrogen, and vitamin needs. In order to replace the 0.1% …

Where Does Electronic Aggression Fit?: A Comparison Of Dimensional And Categorical Models Of Adolescent Aggression, Krista R. Mehari Jan 2014

Where Does Electronic Aggression Fit?: A Comparison Of Dimensional And Categorical Models Of Adolescent Aggression, Krista R. Mehari

Theses and Dissertations

Electronic aggression is a rapidly growing focus of research, but it lacks a unifying theoretical framework that is necessary to advance the field. The lack of a theoretical framework has led to inconsistencies in measurement of electronic aggression, making it difficult to draw conclusions across studies. In general, researchers have assumed that electronic aggression constitutes a new form of aggression, a counterpart to physical, verbal, and relational aggression, due to unique features surrounding the perpetration of electronic aggression. Furthermore, researchers have treated electronic aggression as a categorical variable based on the assumption that “cyberbullies” constitute a distinct group of adolescents. …

A Mixed-Methods Examination Of Racial Differences In Females' Perceptions And Experiences Of Sexual Objectification, Ellyn Leighton-Herrmann

Theses and Dissertations

Sexual objectification has become a pervasive problem, negatively affecting the mental and physical health of many women. Understanding the influence of visual media, social-support networks and social interactions on young women's health is essential to addressing issues related to objectification. We do not have an in-depth understanding of how Black and White young adult women make meaning of objectification. Further, the existing literature suggests that experiences of objectification are likely different for Black and White women. The current research employed two studies, one qualitative and one quantitative, to address these particular gaps. Study 1 used focus groups to assess young …

Immunohistochemicalstaining was used to detect the presence of these proteins in intrauterine tissue. Gene expression changes were evaluated in stimulated monocytes and macrophages. Fluorescence immunohistochemistry was used to …

Incorporating Dependence Boundaries In Simulating Associated Discrete Data, Mary E. Haynes Jan 2014

Incorporating Dependence Boundaries In Simulating Associated Discrete Data, Mary E. Haynes

Theses and Dissertations

In the study of associated discrete variables, limitations on the range of the possible association measures (Pearson correlation, odds ratio, etc.) arise from the form of the joint probability function between the variables. These limitations are known as the Fréchet bounds. The bounds for cases involving associated binary variables are explored in the context of simulating datasets with a desired correlation and set of marginal probabilities. A new method for creating such datasets is compared to an existing method that uses the multivariate probit. A method for simulating associated binary variables using a desired odds ratio and known marginal probabilities …

Examining The Sensory Characteristics Of Preschool Children With Retentive Fecal Incontinence, Isabelle Beaudry-Bellefeuille Jan 2014

Examining The Sensory Characteristics Of Preschool Children With Retentive Fecal Incontinence, Isabelle Beaudry-Bellefeuille

Theses and Dissertations

Occupational therapists are concerned with individuals´ abilities to engage in daily occupations. When a daily activity such as bowel management is problematic, participation in key occupations can be limited. Retentive fecal incontinence is a common disorder in children. Behavior seems to be partly responsible for this condition. Occupational therapists have hypothesized that some behaviors could be related to sensory over-responsivity. This study investigated the relationship between retentive fecal incontinence and sensory over-responsivity and examined the Toileting Habit Profile Questionnaire, a tool designed to screen for toileting difficulties. The study showed that a group of children (n=16) with retentive fecal incontinence …

The oesophagus is a difficult challenge for the surgeon because of its lack of serosal covering, the tenuous, segmental blood supply and the common delay in the diagnosis of injury. Early diagnosis is the key to successful management. Recent introduction of newer, minimally invasive techniques have provided management alternatives for both the normal and the diseased organ that is injured with both early and delayed diagnosis.

Is The Consistency More Important Than The Ingredients For Treatment? Case Report For Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Dan W. Parrish, Shashank Sharma, Santhosh Kumar Jan 2014

Is The Consistency More Important Than The Ingredients For Treatment? Case Report For Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Dan W. Parrish, Shashank Sharma, Santhosh Kumar

Surgery Publications

Eosinophilic Esophagitis seems to be an ever-changing disease, from patient-to-patient and from year-to-year in the same patient. Improvements in these patients’ lives have been made with the realization that elimination of dietary antigens helped with symptom relief and treatment with topical steroids assisted in eradication of esophageal eosinophils.

This case study has two very important aspects that should be emphasized. The first is the realization that it may be consistency of the steroid mixture rather than the ingredients that infer the effectiveness of the EoE treatment, and the second aspect is the willingness of the medical team to listen to …

Are Mothers Hazardous To Their Children’S Health?: Law, Culture, And The Framing Of Risk, Linda C. Fentiman Jan 2014

Are Mothers Hazardous To Their Children’S Health?: Law, Culture, And The Framing Of Risk, Linda C. Fentiman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article examines the psychosocial processes of risk construction and explores how these processes intersect with core principles of Anglo-American law. It does so by critiquing current cultural and legal perceptions that mothers, especially pregnant women, pose a risk to their children’s health. The Article’s core argument is that during the last four decades, both American society and American law have increasingly come to view mothers as a primary source of risk to children. This intense focus on the threat of maternal harm ignores significant environmental sources of injury, including fathers and other men, as well as exposure to toxic …

Justice As A Rounding Error? Evidence Of Subconscious Bias In Second-Degree Murder Sentences In Canada, Craig Jones, Micah B. Rankin Jan 2014

Justice As A Rounding Error? Evidence Of Subconscious Bias In Second-Degree Murder Sentences In Canada, Craig Jones, Micah B. Rankin

Osgoode Legal Studies Research Paper Series

There are few areas of law that grant judges as much discretion as the sentencing of criminal offenders. This discretion necessarily leads to concerns about the influence of biases, including those that result from subconscious processes associated with human cognition; that is to say, “heuristics”. In this article, the authors explore one heuristic – “number preference” – through an examination of all reported second degree murder parole ineligibility decisions between 1990 and 2012. Number preference leads individuals to predictably “round off” measurements to certain favoured numbers. The authors identify a tendency for parole ineligibility decisions to “cluster” around even numbers …
