Background
The majority of commercial cotton varieties planted worldwide are derived from Gossypium hirsutum, which is a naturally occurring allotetraploid produced by interspecific hybridization of A- and D-genome diploid progenitor species. While most cotton species are adapted to warm, semi-arid tropical and subtropical regions, and thus perform well in these geographical areas, cotton seedlings are sensitive to cold temperature, which can significantly reduce crop yields. One of the common biochemical responses of plants to cold temperatures is an increase in omega-3 fatty acids, which protects cellular function by maintaining membrane integrity. The purpose of our study was to identify …

Resistance against diseases affects profitability of rainbow trout. Limited information is available about functions and mechanisms of teleost immune pathways. Immunogenomics provides powerful tools to determine disease resistance genes/gene pathways and develop genetic markers for genomic selection. RNA-Seq sequencing of the rainbow trout spleen yielded 93,532,200 reads (100 bp). High quality reads were assembled into 43,047 contigs. 26,333 (61.17%) of the contigs had hits to the NR protein database and 7024 (16.32%) had hits to the KEGG database. Gene ontology showed significant percentages of transcripts assigned to binding (51%), signaling (7%), response to stimuli (9%) and receptor activity (4%) suggesting …

Optimizing Data Collection For Public Health Decisions: A Data Mining Approach, Susan N. Partington, Vasil Papakroni, Tim Menzies
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background: Collecting data can be cumbersome and expensive. Lack of relevant, accurate and timely data for research to inform policy may negatively impact public health. The aim of this study was to test if the careful removal of items from two community nutrition surveys guided by a data mining technique called feature selection, can (a) identify a reduced dataset, while (b) not damaging the signal inside that data.
Methods: The Nutrition Environment Measures Surveys for stores (NEMS-S) and restaurants (NEMS-R) were completed on 885 retail food outlets in two counties in West Virginia between May and November of 2011. A …

Follicular development occurs in wave like patterns in monotocous species such as cattle and humans and is regulated by a complex interaction of gonadotropins with local intrafollicular regulatory molecules. To further elucidate potential mechanisms controlling dominant follicle selection, granulosa cell RNA harvested from F1 (largest) and F2 (second largest) follicles isolated at predeviation (PD) and onset of diameter deviation (OD) stages of the first follicular wave was subjected to preliminary RNA transcriptome analysis. Expression of numerous WNT system components was observed. Hence experiments were performed to test the hypothesis that WNT signaling modulates FSH action on granulosa cells during follicular …

Low Sensitivity Of The Metabolic Syndrome To Identify Adolescents With Impaired Glucose Tolerance: An Analysis Of Nhanes 1999–2010, Mark D. Deboer, Matthew J. Gurka
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
The presence of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are two risk factors for Type 2 diabetes. The inter-relatedness of these factors among adolescents is unclear.
Methods
We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of MetS for identifying IGT in an unselected group of adolescents undergoing oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTT) in the National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey 1999–2010. We characterized IGT as a 2-hour glucose ≥140 mg/dL and MetS using ATP-III-based criteria and a continuous sex- and race/ethnicity-specific MetS Z-score at cut-offs of +1.0 and +0.75 standard deviations (SD) above the mean.

Background
The proportion of incompletely immunized children in Pakistan varies from 37-58%, and this has recently resulted in outbreaks of measles and polio. The aim of this paper is to determine the factors associated with incomplete immunization among children aged 12-23 months in Pakistan.
Methods
Secondary analysis was conducted on nationally representative cross-sectional survey data from the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey, 2006-07. The analysis was limited to ever-married mothers who had delivered their last child during the 23 months immediately preceding the survey (n = 2,435). ‘Complete immunization’ was defined as the child having received twelve doses of five …

Status Inequalities: A Study Of The Impact Of Socioeconomic Disparities On Educational Experience, Morgan Johnstonbaugh
Honors Thesis Collection
This thesis investigates the social, economic, and psychological factors that contribute to educational success. The analysis of 20 qualitative interviews with students at an elite liberal arts college highlights the complex relationship between socioeconomic status and education. Interviewees discuss the fields they encountered and the capital they accrued as they formed a habitus that was continuously being shaped by their experiences. These factors contributed to the trajectories that students followed as they developed high aspirations and continued on to university. A comprehensive analysis of this largely social process accentuates the inadequacies of educational policy that focuses on formal rather than …

The Pou Factor Ventral Veins Lacking/Drifter Directs The Timing Of Metamorphosis Through Ecdysteroid And Juvenile Hormone Signaling, Cece Cheng, Amy Ko, Leila Chaieb, Takashi Koyama, Prioty Sarwar, Christen K. Mirth, Wendy A. Smith, Yuichiro Suzuki
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Although endocrine changes are known to modulate the timing of major developmental transitions, the genetic mechanisms underlying these changes remain poorly understood. In insects, two developmental hormones, juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysteroids, are coordinated with each other to induce developmental changes associated with metamorphosis. However, the regulation underlying the coordination of JH and ecdysteroid synthesis remains elusive. Here, we examined the function of a homolog of the vertebrate POU domain protein, Ventral veins lacking (Vvl)/Drifter, in regulating both of these hormonal pathways in the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Tenebrionidae). RNA interference-mediated silencing of vvlexpression led to both precocious …

A Decade Later: An Evaluation Of The Longer-Term Impacts Of A Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer, Emma Rackstraw
Honors Thesis Collection
The simplicity of giving money to the poor for a specific and pre-approved purpose appeals to many stakeholders in the field of development— particularly policymakers and economists. In education policy, conditional cash transfers have been effective in improving school attendance and enrollment, as well as lowering child labor supply. However, the effects of CCTs have only been studied after a relatively short period of time after the transfer. The ultimate goal of investment in education is to get a return on that investment through an improvement in children’s long-term wellbeing. This thesis captures these effects on long-term educational and labor …

We all know that we should eat “healthy.” But what does that mean? A healthy diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, proteins, and healthy fats. Eating these foods gives you energy for the day and can help manage fatigue, anxiety or stress. They also can help protect you against many diseases. Eating the right types of food is important but so is watching how much we eat.
This fact sheet on nutrition provides guidelines on how to do both. This fact sheet also provides tips on how to eat healthy on a tight budget. In addition to the English version …

The use of abdominal angiography and transcatheter embolization has increased rapidly in the last few decades. Although improvement in angiographic techniques has made the procedure safe, ischemic colitis is a rare but potentially dreadful complication. We report a case of a 51-year-old woman who developed ischemic colitis following aortography, demonstrating that such angiographic studies may produce substantial morbidity.
