Pediatric Trainees' Engagement In The Online Nutrition Curriculum: Preliminary Results, K. O. Lewis, G. R. Frank, R. Nagel, T. L. Turner, C. L. Ferrell, S. G. Sangvai, R. Donthi, J. D. Mahan

Journal Articles

Background: The Pediatric Nutrition Series (PNS) consists of ten online, interactive modules and supplementary educational materials that have utilized web-based multimedia technologies to offer nutrition education for pediatric trainees and practicing physicians. The purpose of the study was to evaluate pediatric trainees' engagement, knowledge acquisition, and satisfaction with nutrition modules delivered online in interactive and non-interactive formats. Methods: From December 2010 through August 2011, pediatric trainees from seventy-three (73) different U. S. programs completed online nutrition modules designed to develop residents' knowledge of counseling around and management of nutritional issues in children. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 19. Both …

Journal Articles

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil expression of the Fcgamma receptor I (CD64) is upregulated in adult patients with clinically active inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We tested the relationship of CD64 with mucosal inflammation and clinical relapse in pediatric Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: In a cohort of 208 newly diagnosed CD and 43 non-IBD controls, ileal expression of FcgammaRI/S100A9 was determined by RNA sequencing from biopsies obtained at ileocolonoscopy. In a second cohort, we tested for the peripheral blood polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) CD64 index from 26 newly diagnosed CD, 30 non-IBD controls, and 83 children with established CD. RESULTS: Ileal FcgammaRIA mRNA expression was …

Winter Wheat Quality Responses To Water, Environment, And Nitrogen Fertilization, Hyejin Park, David E. Clay, R. G. Hall, Tulsi P. Kharel, Sharon A. Clay, Sanghun Lee

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Decreasing carbon (C) footprints by reducing nitrogen (N) and water inputs has been speculated to have negative impacts on wheat grain yield and flour processing quality. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of N and water stress on winter wheat grain yield, protein composition, and dough quality. Wheat fertilized at two N rates (unfertilized and recommended) was grown under water-stressed and well-watered environments. Nitrogen and water stress were measured using the 13C isotopic approach. Research showed that (1) N fertilizer and the water-management environment produced similar impacts on wheat quality and yield loss due to N …

Early Trends In Cystatin C And Outcomes In Patients With Cirrhosis And Acute Kidney Injury, Justin M. Belcher, Arun J. Sanyal, Guadalupe Garcia-Tsao, Naheed Ansari, Steven G. Coca, Michael G. Shlipak, Chirag R. Parikh Jan 2014

Early Trends In Cystatin C And Outcomes In Patients With Cirrhosis And Acute Kidney Injury, Justin M. Belcher, Arun J. Sanyal, Guadalupe Garcia-Tsao, Naheed Ansari, Steven G. Coca, Michael G. Shlipak, Chirag R. Parikh

Internal Medicine Publications

Background. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and severe complication in patients with cirrhosis. Progression of AKI to a higher stage associates with increased mortality. Intervening early in AKI when renal dysfunction is worsening may improve outcomes. However, serum creatinine correlates poorly with glomerular filtration in patients with cirrhosis and fluctuations may mask progression early in the course of AKI. Cystatin C, a low-molecular-weight cysteine proteinase inhibitor, is a potentially more accurate marker of glomerular filtration. Methods. We conducted a prospective multicenter study in patients with cirrhosis comparing changes in cystatin and creatinine immediately following onset of AKI as …

CFTR is a dynamically regulated anion channel. Intracellular WNK1-SPAK activation causes CFTR to change permeability and conductance characteristics from a chloride-preferring to bicarbonate-preferring channel through unknown mechanisms. Two severe CFTR mutations (CFTRsev) cause complete loss of CFTR function and result in cystic fibrosis (CF), a severe genetic disorder affecting sweat glands, nasal sinuses, lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, and male reproductive system. We hypothesize that those CFTR mutations that disrupt the WNK1-SPAK activation mechanisms cause a selective, bicarbonate defect in channel function (CFTRBD) affecting organs that utilize CFTR for bicarbonate secretion (e.g. the pancreas, nasal sinus, vas …

The Impact Of A School Gardening Program On Nutrition Attitudes, Behaviors And Interests Amongst Fourth Grade Students, Anjali Barnick

ETD Archive

This study intended to examine the impact of the gardening curriculum in an urban elementary school in Cleveland, Ohio. This yearlong gardening education program is introduced to the students in the 4th grade and incorporates a curriculum that includes gardening, nutrition, community service and experiential learning. With ample support from the community and from parents, this school provided the ideal setting to research the topic of how school gardening programs influence the students, their families and the community. The study used a series of questionnaires administered to the students in the fall of August 2013, early winter December 2013 and February …

Men Making Meaning Of Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Study, Robin Leichtman Jan 2014

Men Making Meaning Of Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Study, Robin Leichtman

ETD Archive

There is a stark contrast between the research and published accounts reflecting women's experiences in coping with an eating disorder in comparison to men's narratives. Because of this, many medical and mental health providers do not consider an eating disorder as a possible diagnosis when men present with symptoms associated with an eating disorder. This notion was confirmed by Menstuff┬« (2012), who reported men are often not diagnosed and/or are embarrassed by being diagnosed with an eating disorder because eating disorders have become more associated with a problem women or gay men experience. Assumptions that eating disorders are a female …

Determining The Relationship Between Language And Attention In Elders With Nonfluent Aphasia, Amanda Wadams Jan 2014

Determining The Relationship Between Language And Attention In Elders With Nonfluent Aphasia, Amanda Wadams

ETD Archive

Researchers have questioned whether the occurrence of aphasia creates executive function deficiencies that result in cognitive-linguistic deficits. Aphasia is a breakdown in language comprehension and production caused by a focal lesion in the left hemisphere of the brain (Papathanasiou, Coppens, & Potagas, 2013). Executive function refers to a set of "higher order component functions required to control and coordinate performance on complex problem solving tasks" (Dick & Overton, 2010). Researchers have speculated that attention, an important part of executive function, may be compromised in addition to language deficits in persons with aphasia. The purpose of this exploratory multiple case comparison …

Impact Of Hba1c Measurement On Hospital Readmission Rates: Analysis Of 70,000 Clinical Database Patient Records, Beata Strack, Jonathan P. Deshazo, Chris Gennings, Juan L. Olmo, Sebastian Ventura, Krzysztof J. Cios, John N. Clore

Computer Science Publications

Management of hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients has a significant bearing on outcome, in terms of both morbidity and mortality. However, there are few national assessments of diabetes care during hospitalization which could serve as a baseline for change. This analysis of a large clinical database (74 million unique encounters corresponding to 17 million unique patients) was undertaken to provide such an assessment and to find future directions which might lead to improvements in patient safety. Almost 70,000 inpatient diabetes encounters were identified with sufficient detail for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression was used to fit the relationship between the measurement of …
