The Influence Of The Student Mobility Rate On The Graduation Rate In The State Of New Jersey, Lavetta S. Ross
The Influence Of The Student Mobility Rate On The Graduation Rate In The State Of New Jersey, Lavetta S. Ross
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
This study examined the influence of the student mobility rate on the high school graduation rate of schools in the state of New Jersey. Variables found to have an influence on the graduation rate in the extant literature were evaluated and reported. The analysis included multiple and hierarchical regression models for school variables (i.e., teacher mobility and school size) and student variables (i.e., percentage of limited English proficient students, special education students, low socioeconomic status, and minority students). All data explored in this study pertained to 316 public comprehensive high schools in New Jersey during the 2010-2011 academic school year, …

Comparison Of Body Fat Percentage Results Derived Using Hydrostatic Weighing And The Bod Pod In 185 Women, Rich Jarvis, Dr. Larry Tucker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Obesity will probably replace cigarette smoking as the major killer of Americans in the next century.1 Research shows that excess body weight leads directly to many health problems, and it often contributes indirectly to other serious diseases by precipitating dangerous metabolic abnormalities.2 In short, obesity plays a central role in the development of numerous diseases, including Type II diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, various cancers, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, stroke, and all cause mortality.

The Ipocamp Pressure Incubator For Deep-Sea Fauna, Bruce Shillito, Françoise Gaill, Juliette Ravaux
The Ipocamp Pressure Incubator For Deep-Sea Fauna, Bruce Shillito, Françoise Gaill, Juliette Ravaux
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Animal Biology studies have always benefited from the achievement of experiments on live animals, which obviously provide data on dynamic aspects of physiology. When it comes to deep-sea fauna, in vivo experiments are impaired, and in some cases impossible, due to the severe and often lethal stress experienced by animals throughout the sampling process. However, freshly collected deep fauna may be maintained alive and in good condition, by using specific aquaria which restore environmental conditions prevailing at depth in situ. Here we describe the pressure device named “Incubateur Pressurisé pour l’Observation et la Culture d’Animaux Marins Profonds”, or IPOCAMP, and …

Assessing The Potential Bacterial Origin Of The Chemical Diversity In Calcareous Sponges, Elodie Quévrain, Mélanie Roué, Isabelle Domart-Coulon, Marie-Lise Bourguet-Kondracki
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The chemodiversity and cultivable bacterial diversity of temperate calcareous sponges were investigated in a time series of collection of two sponges, Leuconia johnstoni (Baerida, Calcaronea) collected from the northeastern Atlantic Ocean and Clathrina clathrus (Clathrinida, Calcinea) collected from the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, using combined chemical and microbiological approaches. Bacteria were visualized in tissue sections of these sponges with Gram staining and in situ hybridization. The sponge crude extracts revealed annually persistent biological activities against reference human pathogen strains: L. johnstoni extracts displayed antimicrobial activity against a Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus strain; C. clathrus extracts displayed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial …

Folic Acid Awareness Among Byu Females, Natasha Bushnell, Mariana Chiriac, Nora Nyland
Folic Acid Awareness Among Byu Females, Natasha Bushnell, Mariana Chiriac, Nora Nyland
Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the B vitamins, folic acid is involved in DNA synthesis in the human body. This nutrient becomes crucial during the embrionic development of the fetus during a pregnancy. A maternal deficiency of folic acid, added to a genetic predisposition, has been linked to the development of neural tube defects in the fetus (e.g. spina bifida and anencephaly). These conditions re results of an incomplete development of the central nervous system, causing 2500 to 3000 infants in the US to be physically and mentally impaired every year.

Effects Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction On Anxiety & Depression In Primary Care Patients, Elizabeth Mccallion
Effects Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction On Anxiety & Depression In Primary Care Patients, Elizabeth Mccallion
Psychology ETDs
The objective of this study was to examine effects of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on the ability to decrease anxiety and depression and increase mindfulness compared to cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM). Thirty-five subjects were recruited from a community healthcare center and took part in MBSR (n = 21) and CBSM (n =14) groups. There were no initial differences between MBSR and CBSM subjects on demographics including age, gender, education, and income. MBSR was an 8-week course using meditation, gentle yoga, and body scanning exercises to increase mindfulness. CBSM was an 8-week course using cognitive and behavioral techniques to change thinking …
Effect Of An External Visual Cue On Delivery Of Enteral Nutrition In A University Trauma/Surgical/Burn Intensive Care Unit, Paula West
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
Background: Enteral nutrition in the critically ill patient is interrupted for myriad reasons some of which include withholding for operations, diagnostic tests, high residuals, feeding tube displacements and routine care. We sought to determine if use of an external visual cue by nursing increases delivery of goal enteral nutrition (EN) from baseline during the first 7 days of ICU admission. Methods: After achieving IRB approval we retrospectively evaluated all trauma/surgical/burn intensive care unit (TSBICU) records from May 2012 through March 2013 for patients with more than 7 days in the TSBICU who received EN as their primary means of nutrition …
The Phenomenology Of Husbands Caring For Wives With Dementia, Melanie Mayo
The Phenomenology Of Husbands Caring For Wives With Dementia, Melanie Mayo
Nursing ETDs
The lived experience of husbands caring for wives with dementia was investigated in order to develop a better understanding of their caregiver burden. The conceptual background for the study originated in the work of philosophical phenomenologists Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein with particular attention to their theories of inter-subjectivity and empathy. Amadeo Giorgis Descriptive Phenomenological Method in Psychology was used for study design and analysis. Results suggest an enduring connectedness of the couples and their bonds throughout the shifting of roles and emotions as the dementia progresses. Implications for nursing include the need to employ interventions respectful of the persistence …

The Cultural Foundations To Develop A Kichwa Language Program At El Centro Infantil Alejo Saes In Quito City, Ecuador, Maria Teran
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This qualitative study was concerned with the Kichwa values to develop a Kichwa language program for Indigenous children from birth to five-years old from El Centro Infantil Alejo Saes in Quito City. The parents of these children come from the Puesitús Indigenous community located in Chimborazo Province in the south of Ecuador. In the 1950s, these Indigenous Peoples migrated from their community to the city due to the lack of good living conditions and education. During the migration process, they left their Pachamama, the Mother Earth, and gradually began to lose their culture and language, as they were forced to …
