Debaryomyces Hansenii: A Foodborne Yeast That Produces Anti- Candida Killer Toxin, Nabaraj Banjara
Debaryomyces Hansenii: A Foodborne Yeast That Produces Anti- Candida Killer Toxin, Nabaraj Banjara
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Candida yeasts are commensal members of the gastrointestinal, mucosal, oral and vaginal microbiota. Candida albicans and C. tropicalis can be found as a part of the normal human commensal flora, especially in all sections of the gastrointestinal tract. However, when the host defense system and microbiota are disturbed, Candida can become pathogenic and cause severe infection or candidiasis. Antifungal drugs used to treat candidiasis have been shown to result in treatment failures due to drug toxicity and/or development of resistance during long term antifungal therapy and, in recent years, the incidence of Candida infections has increased dramatically due to the …

Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which became federal law in 1974, addresses the rights of students and their parents with regard to educational records. The two goals of FERPA are (1) to grant parents and eligible students, typically those over age 18, access to their educational records and (2) to limit the access of outsiders to those records. FERPA, along with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its regulations, also has a significant effect on the delivery of special education for students with disabilities (20 U.S.C. § 1232[g]; 34 C.F.R. § 99.4).

Baseline Concussion Screening Of Adolescents During Pre-Participation Exams, Kristi Hillman
Baseline Concussion Screening Of Adolescents During Pre-Participation Exams, Kristi Hillman
Theses and Dissertations
Assessment of post-concussion injury and return to play (RTP) guidance are frequently used skills in the primary care setting. Whether the mechanism of injury occurred as a result of athletic participation or from other accidental injury, the adolescent's primary care provider is well-suited for post-injury management as he or she has a comprehensive knowledge of the patient's cognitive and physical histories. The case report highlights a 16-year-old female who presented unaccompanied to her primary care provider for athletic clearance following a motor vehicle accident (MV A). The crash resulted in a right sided head injury and grade I concussion. The …

The current study examined the influence of health insurance, psychological processes (i.e. psychological competency and vulnerability), and the interaction of these two constructs on older African Americans' utilization of five preventive care services (e.g. cholesterol screening and mammogram/prostate examination) using data from 211 older African Americans (median age = 60). In addition to direct effects, the influence of health insurance sometimes varied depending on respondents' psychological competency and/or vulnerability. Policies and interventions to increase older African Americans' use of preventive health services should consider structural (e.g. health insurance) and psychological (e.g. psychological competency and vulnerability) factors along with the interaction …

Gdnf Content And Nmj Plasticity In Slow And Fast Twitch Myofibers Follows Recruitment In Exercise, Amy Morrison Gyorkos
Dissertations
Glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) supports and maintains the neuromuscular system during development and through adulthood by promoting neuroplasticity. GDNF may play a role in delaying the onset of aging and help compress morbidity by preventing motor unit degeneration. Exercise has been shown to alter GDNF expression differently in slow and fast twitch myofibers. The aim of this dissertation project is to determine if different intensities of exercise can promote changes in GDNF expression and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) morphology in slow and fast twitch muscle fibers. Skeletal muscle fibers were analyzed from adult Sprague Dawley rats aged 4 weeks …

Impact Of Amur Honeysuckle (Lonicera Maackii) Leachate On Culex Pipiens Life History Attributes, Lauren Shewhart
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study was to look at the impact of a highly invasive plant, Lonicera maackii, on the primary vector of West Nile Virus in the Eastern United States, Culex pipiens. Three different assays using two different microcosms experiments were conducted to determine the rate of survivorship, pupation, emergence, and larval growth of mosquito larvae in native (Platanus occidentalis and Acer saccharum) and invasive (L. maackii leaf and flower) leachates. It was found that L. maackii has the potential to increase mosquito populations due to the fast decaying nature of its leaves and …

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a base chemical used extensively in many consumer products. BPA has recently been associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in multiple large-scale human population studies, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We previously reported that BPA activates the pregnane X receptor (PXR), which acts as a xenobiotic sensor to regulate xenobiotic metabolism and has pro-atherogenic effects in animal models upon activation. Interestingly, BPA is a potent agonist of human PXR but does not activate mouse or rat PXR signaling, which confounds the use of rodent models to evaluate mechanisms of BPA-mediated CVD risk. …
The Intersection Of Depression, Partner Violence And Poverty During The Perinatal Period, Catherine L. Kothari
The Intersection Of Depression, Partner Violence And Poverty During The Perinatal Period, Catherine L. Kothari
Dissertations
Problem: Despite the wealth of research documenting the individual links between maternal depression, partner violence, and poverty, important gaps remain regarding their combined interactions, and their variation related to perinatal timing (pregnancy and postpartum). The current dissertation examined the interplay of these phenomena across perinatality.
Methods: This dissertation utilized secondary analysis of telephone survey data from a representative sample of women recruited during their postpartum hospital stay and interviewed four times over the subsequent 18 months. Linear regression was used for predictive modeling of fixed effects, and generalized estimating equation regression was used for multivariate analysis of temporal trends.
Findings: …

Consumer Research Needs From The Food And Drug Administration On Front-Of-Package Nutritional Labeling, J. Craig Andrews, Chung-Tung Jordan Lin, Alan S. Levy, Serena Lo
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
Americans have increasingly busy lifestyles and desire quick and nutritious food choices. To provide consumers with at-a-glance nutrition information, many food manufacturers have introduced front-of-package (FOP) nutritional labeling systems. The purpose of this review is to reach out to the marketing and public policy discipline by identifying research needs on FOP systems not only to aid decision making for federal agencies, but also to help advance research on this important topic. We describe the many FOP systems, the FDA's regulatory background and approach to FOP systems, recent experimental research and gaps in knowledge, and research needs on FOP nutrition labeling.

The Gut Reaction: How The Intestinal Microbiota Respond To Citrobacter Rodentium Colonization, Cassandra Black
The Gut Reaction: How The Intestinal Microbiota Respond To Citrobacter Rodentium Colonization, Cassandra Black
Senior Honors Theses
The human intestine hosts a diverse community of bacteria known as the intestinal microbiota. The intestinal microbiota have a symbiotic relationship with the host organism. Current research does not clearly define the effect these commensal microorganisms have on the overall maintenance of gastrointestinal health, including protection from the invasion and pathogenesis of foreign bacteria known as pathogens. EHEC O157:H7 causes severe sickness and can be life-threatening, but is difficult to study in vivo. One challenge is that EHEC does not colonize the preferred animal model for human GI studies: the murine intestine. However, the murine pathogen Citrobacter rodentium has …

Isoflavones And Alzheimer’S Disease: The Effects Of Soy In Diet, Sara Habib, Asad Ali Khan Afridi, Mohammad Wasay, Romaina Iqbal
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Pathologically, Alzheimer’s disease is a result of aggregation of amyloid peptides and protein tau in the brain forming neurofibrillary tangles which are highly toxic to neuronal circuits in the brain. Recent evidences report that apart from aging, estrogen deficiency is one of the risk factors predisposing to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Isoflavones, also known as phytoestrogens, are metabolized by the body forming compounds that are known to interfere with neurotoxic pathways and through their anti-fibrillization effects they play a role in reducing apoptosis of neurons and glial cells and promote axonal regeneration. Experimental studies on transgenic models with Alzheimer’s …

Depression is a mood altering state which can be characterized by feelings of sadness that can affect thoughts, daily activities, emotions, physical health and even behavior of an individual, most often affecting women (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2014, para 1 ). In the United States, depression has affected millions of the U.S. population (Peckofer et al, 2010). It is important that we focus on both the disease itself and depression related morbidity and mortality. A large number of depressed patients will suffer from a depressive crisis. These crises' can lead to sclf-inf1icted injuries, worsening of the individual 's medical …
